GIS-Based Analysis of Volatile Organic Compounds in Bucheon, Korea, Using Mobile Laboratory and Proton-Transfer-Reaction Time-of-Flight Mass Spectrometry Methods.

Recently, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) have been shown to act as precursors of secondary organic particles that react with ultraviolet rays in the atmosphere and contribute to photochemical smog, global warming, odor, and human health risks, highlighting the importance of VOC management. In this study, we measured VOC concentrations in various contexts including industrial and residential areas of Bucheon, Korea, through mobile laboratory and proton-transfer-reaction time-of-flight mass spectrometry methods to determine winter VOC concentrations and visualized the data based on spatial information. Regional characteristics, temperature/humidity, atmospheric conditions, wind speed, traffic volume, etc., during the measurement period of the study site were comprehensively reviewed. For this purpose, global information system (GIS)-based air quality data and various environmental variables were comprehensively reviewed to assess spatial and temporal concentrations in three dimensions rather than in tables and graphs. Among VOCs, the levels of toluene, methanol, and n + i-butene were relatively high, with average concentrations of 48.3 ± 67.2, 34.4 ± 102.7, and 32.6 ± 57.7 ppb, respectively, at the end of the working day. The highest concentrations occurred near the Ojeong Industrial Complex. Mobile pollution sources are also a major driver of VOCs, highlighting the necessity of comprehensively reviewing traffic variables such as road level, estimated traffic volume, and average speed when identifying hotspots of air pollution. GIS-based visualization analysis techniques will improve the efficiency of air quality management.

Atmospheric oxidation capacity and secondary pollutant formation potentials based on photochemical loss of VOCs in a megacity of the Sichuan Basin, China

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are significant precursors to photochemical pollution. However, reactive VOC species are easily oxidized during transportation, resulting in a systematic underestimate of the measured concentrations. To address this, we applied an improved calculation method to correct the measured VOC concentrations into photochemical initial concentrations (PICs) in Chengdu, a megacity in the Sichuan Basin, China, which is highly vulnerable to complex pollution. In this study, 56 VOC species on the Photochemical Assessment Monitor Station (PAMS) target list were quantitatively monitored throughout all four seasons. Comparing to directly measured values, photochemically initialized total mixing ratios of VOCs increased by 18.6 % in general. The photochemical loss percentages of alkenes and aromatics were prominent in summer (68.6 %, 28.7 %) and spring (65.9 %, 24.7 %), respectively. Furthermore, we examined contributions of VOCs to atmospheric oxidation capacity (AOC) depending on PICs and found that maximum daily total AOC showed a surge in spring and summer. Besides hydroxyl radicals, daytime O3 in spring and late-afternoon nitrate radicals in summer were essential for AOC with PICs. As expected, alkenes and aromatics dominated PIC-based ozone formation potentials (OFPs). Furthermore, contribution of alkenes to secondary organic aerosol formation potentials reached 15.5 % and 7.6 % in spring and summer, respectively. Using positive matrix factorization model, we identified five VOC sources including vehicular exhaust, industrial emissions, solvent usage, biogenic sources, and liquefied petroleum gas/natural gas use. Based on PICs, biogenic sources were significantly underestimated in spring and summer. Meanwhile, m,p-xylene from solvent usage and isoprene from biogenic sources were the primary contributors to OFPs. Consequently, these results emphasize the significance of photochemically oxidized VOC concentrations, especially for reactive species in typical seasons.

A retrospect of ozone formation mechanisms during the COVID-19 lockdown: The potential role of isoprene

Wuhan took strict measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19 from January 26 to April 7 in 2020. The lockdown reduced the concentrations of atmospheric pollutants, except ozone (O3). To investigate the increase in O3 during the lockdown, trace gas pollutants were collected. The initial concentrations of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were calculated based on a photochemical ratio method, and the ozone formation potential (OFP) was obtained using the initial and measured VOC concentrations. The O3 formation regime was NOX-limited based on the VOCs/NOX diurnal ratios during the lockdown period. The reduced nitric oxide (NO) concentrations and lower wind speed (WS) could explain the night-time O3 accumulation. The initial total VOCs (TVOCs) during the lockdown were 47.6 ± 2.9 ppbv, and alkenes contributed 48.1%. The photochemical loss amounts of alkenes were an order of magnitude higher than those of alkenes in the same period in 2019 and increased from 16.6 to 28.0 ppbv in the daytime. The higher initial alkene concentrations sustained higher OFP during the lockdown, reaching between 252.4 and 504.4 ppbv. The initial isoprene contributed approximately 35.0–55.0% to the total OFP and had a positive correlation with the increasing O3 concentrations. Approximately 75.5% of the temperatures were concentrated in the range of 5 and 20 °C, which were higher than those in 2019. In addition to stronger solar radiation, the higher temperatures induced higher isoprene emission rates, partially accounting for the higher isoprene concentrations. Lower isoprene-emitting trees should be considered for future urban vegetation to control O3 episodes.

Characteristics of VOCs and their contribution to O3 and SOA formation across seasons over a metropolitan region in India

Understanding and quantifying the influence of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) on ozone and secondary organic aerosol formation is essential for better prediction/estimation of these products. A total of 9 VOCs along with surface ozone were measured during the year 2019 at Pune (India) location. The ozone formation potential (OFP) and secondary organic aerosol formation potential (SOAFP) estimations are compared for 2 methods-using measured VOC concentrations and using their photochemical initial concentrations (PIC). The OFP and SOAFP estimated based on the measured VOC concentrations provide an incomplete understanding of these 2 formation processes. This is mainly because measured VOCs don't account for the photochemical losses that compounds undergo from the source to the receptor. The PIC values of VOCs have been estimated in this study to highlight the importance of considering the photochemical losses. For example, the PIC value of highly reactive compound, isoprene, was found to be 152% higher (1.48 ppbv) than its measured value (0.59 ppbv). The resultant total OFP estimate based on PIC values of all the VOCs was found to be 53.30 ± 35.02 ppbv as compared to 45.99 ± 29.35 ppbv obtained from measured VOCs. Based on k-means clustering analysis, it was found that the highest ozone formation was favored under transition regime chemistry when PIC values were considered. The average total SOAFP based on PIC values was found to be 1.32 ± 1.40 ppbv, while it was 1.17 ± 1.18 ppbv for measured VOCs. The aromatics contributed to over 90% of total SOAFP estimated for the region.

Implications for ozone control by understanding the survivor bias in observed ozone-volatile organic compounds system

Tropospheric ozone (O3) affects Earth’s climate and human health. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs), major contributors to O3 formation, are of particular interest. Generally, the measured concentrations of VOCs (M-VOCs) and O3 show nonlinear or even opposite time serial-trend. We attributed the phenomenon to survivor bias: lack of insight of the photochemically consumed VOCs (C-VOCs) which emitted from sources to ambient and devote to forming O3, while excessive concern on the measured VOCs (M-VOCs) at observation site. Both observational and model results provide evidence that C-VOCs are the key to O3 formation. We proposed an improved model to quantify the source contributions of C-VOCs (biogenic emissions, gasoline evaporation, industry, etc.) and their impacts on the formation of O3, successfully avoiding the misidentification of dominant VOCs sources originated from the survivor bias in observational data. The survivor bias found in this study highlights that focusing of M-VOCs directly is insufficient and demonstrates the necessity of capture the sources of C-VOCs which contribute to O3 formation.

Ozone and SOA formation potential based on photochemical loss of VOCs during the Beijing summer

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are easily degraded by oxidants during atmospheric transport. Therefore, the contribution of VOCs to ozone (O3) and secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation at a receptor site is different from that in a source area. In this study, hourly concentrations of VOCs and other pollutants, such as O3, NOx, HONO, CO, and PM2.5, were measured in the suburbs (Daxing district) of Beijing in August 2019. The photochemical initial concentrations (PICs), in which the photochemical losses of VOCs were accounted for, were calculated to evaluate the contribution of the VOCs to O3 and SOA formation. The mean (±standard deviation) measured VOC concentrations and the PICs were 11.2 ± 5.7 and 14.6 ± 8.4 ppbv, respectively, which correspond to O3 formation potentials (OFP) of 57.8 ± 26.3 and 103.9 ± 109.4 ppbv and SOA formation potentials (SOAP) of 8.4 ± 4.1 and 10.3 ± 7.4 μg m−3, respectively. Alkenes contributed 80.5% of the consumed VOCs, followed by aromatics (13.3%) and alkanes (6.2%). The contributions of the alkenes and aromatics to the OFPPICs were 56.8% and 30.3%, respectively; while their corresponding contributions to the SOAPPICs were 1.9% and 97.3%, respectively. The OFPPICs was linearly correlated with the observed O3 concentrations (OFPPICs = 41.5 + 1.40 × cO3, R2 = 0.87). The O3 formation was associated with a VOC-limited regime at the receptor site based on the measured VOCs and changed to a transition regime and a NOx sensitive regime based on the PIC. Our results suggest that more attention should be paid to biogenic VOCs when studying O3 formation in summer in Beijing, while the control of anthropogenic aromatic compounds should be given priority in terms of SOA formation.

Potential sources and measured concentrations of VOCs in Balikesir ambient atmosphere

The assessment of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) has become an important field of interest in atmospheric pollution. This study quantifies and characterizes the ambient levels and spatial distribution of VOCs in urban and rural areas of Balikesir city, Turkey. For these assessments, passive sampling of VOCs performed at approximately 50 locations in and around the city of Balikesir. Twenty-five VOCs were regularly monitored and analyzed with the GC-FID system. The sampling periods were carried out for seven-day periods during March and August 2010. In the study, mean ∑VOC concentrations were found to be as high 67 and 51 µg m–3 for the winter and summer seasons, respectively. Median concentrations of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, m,p-xylene and o-xylene were 2.6, 11, 1.30, 1.80 and 0.73 μg m-3, respectively. Although there were some changes between concentrations of VOC groups between the summer and winter campaigns, differences were not dramatic. Winter-to-summer ratios of the target compounds ranged from 0.2 (1,2,4-trimethylbenzene) to 9 (hexane). Most of the target compounds have higher concentrations in winter. Only few VOCs, including n-propylbenzene, 1,2,4- trimethylbenzene, 1-undecene and 1,2,4- trichlorobenzene have higher concentrations in summer. Spatial distribution of VOCs demonstrated that the roads are hot spots for measured VOC concentrations. The drinking water treatment plant, industrial solvent emissions from pesticide and insecticide applications in agriculture, and emissions from traffic were the sources that contribute to total VOC load in the Balikesir atmosphere.

Deriving emission fluxes of volatile organic compounds from tower observation in the Pearl River Delta, China

Accurate estimation of speciated emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) is challenging due to the complexity of both species and sources. Evaluation of the bottom-up emission inventory (EI) by atmospheric observation is needed to better understand the VOC emissions and then to control air pollutions caused by VOCs. This study conducts vertical measurements of VOCs between November 3 and 11, 2018 at the Canton Tower in the urban core of Pearl River Delta (PRD), China. A mixed layer gradient (MLG) technique is applied to the tower observation data to derive emission fluxes for individual VOC. The results show that the measured VOCs concentrations at ground level were always higher than those at the heights of 118 m and 488 m. Obvious vertical gradients of concentrations were found for VOC species, such as benzene, toluene and isoprene. The emission flux was estimated to be largest for propane (3.29 mg m−2 h−1), followed by toluene (2.55 mg m−2 h−1), isoprene (2.24 mg m−2 h−1), n-butane (2.10 mg m−2 h−1) and iso-pentane (1.73 mg m−2 h−1). The total VOC emission fluxes were around 3 times larger than those in the EI, suggesting 1.5–2 times underestimations of ozone formation potential (OFP) and secondary organic aerosol potential (SOAP) by current EI. Substantial underestimations (3–20 times) were found for C2-C5 alkanes by current EI. Due to unmeasured input parameters, limited sample size and short sampling period, there are still large uncertainties (40%–117%) in the estimated emission fluxes for individual species. Whereas, this study shows that the tower observation and emission estimation using MLG method could provide useful information for better understanding vertical distributions and emission fluxes of VOCs, and pioneer in assessing the existing emission inventories at species-level and hour-level.

Spatial and temporal characteristics of ambient atmospheric hydrocarbons in an active shale gas region in North Texas

Over the past decade, significant development in shale gas extraction technologies has led to a massive increase in oil and gas production within the Barnett Shale region in North Texas. This region abuts a fast-growing Dallas-Fort Worth urban area with increasing air quality concerns. Air quality information for 2011–2015 from two urban and three non-urban monitoring sites within the Barnett Shale region were analyzed to identify the spatial and temporal trends of volatile organic compounds (VOC) concentrations. The non-urban sites had higher mean concentrations of total non-methane organic compounds (TNMOC) at 123.6 ppb-C than 77.06 ppb-C at the urban sites. Alkanes, which includes ethane, propane and n-butane, were the dominant VOC group at all five monitoring sites, with 88% of TNMOC at urban sites and 95% at the non-urban sites. Alkenes, alkynes and aromatics composition at urban sites accounted for 3.96%, 0.72% and 4.72% of TNMOC, and at the non-urban sites these were 1.55%, 0.43% and 1.94%, respectively. Seasonal variations were noted in the VOC profiles with high concentrations during the winter months and low during summer months. The alkane/TNMOC ratio also showed a similar seasonal pattern, with a median value of 0.8 at the urban sites and 0.9 at non-urban sites. Alkene/TNMOC ratios were highest during the summer months, while alkyne/TNMOC ratios were highest during spring and low in winter, due to the influence of localized urban emissions. Higher concentrations of isoprene were measured at one of the urban sites as a result of biogenic emissions from nearby urban forests. Spatial and temporal analysis of measured VOC concentrations at ambient air monitoring stations in North Texas revealed strong influence of source regions with high oil and gas activities in close proximity.

Source apportionment of VOCs in a suburb of Nanjing, China, in autumn and winter

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were measured in a suburb of Nanjing by on-line gas chromatography-flame ionization detector (GC-FID) instruments from September 2011 to January 2012. The measured VOC concentrations are dominated by alkanes (47 %), alkenes (25 %) and aromatics (20 %); in which alkenes attributed 57 % to the propylene-equivalent concentrations and 58 % to the ozone formation potential. The benzene to toluene (B/T) ratio was 1.60 ± 1.28, larger than 1, suggesting that the combustion sources might be significant at this site. Based on the measured VOC concentrations, a receptor model (PCA/APCS; principal component analysis/absolute principal component scores) coupled with the measured VOC source profiles was applied to identify the major VOC sources. Five surrogated VOC sources were identified: fossil-fuel/biomass/biofuel combustion accounted for 28 % of the total VOC concentrations, followed by the combination of solvent usage and industrial sources 1 (26 %), fuel evaporations (23 %), vehicular exhaust (18 %) and industrial sources 2 (5 %). Furthermore, the method was applied to analyze VOC sources in four quadrants (northeast, northwest, southeast and southwest) based on wind directions. Industrial sources were the most significant contributors (33 %) in the NE quadrant; VOCs in the NW quadrant were mainly contributed by the combination of fuel evaporation and fossil fuel/biomass/biofuel combustion (50 %). The most important source in the SE quadrant was the combination of solvent usage and industrial sources 1 (35 %), while 51 % of VOC concentrations were attributed to fossil fuel/biomass/biofuel combustion in the SW quadrant, indicating that the source contributions in various quadrants were quite different. This study may provide useful information for establishing effective air pollution control strategies in this region.

Source apportionment of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in aircraft cabins

The presence of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the air of aircraft cabins was studied to identify possible emission sources and their contributions to aircraft cabin VOC concentrations. A total of 84 sampling events were included during 14 different flights. Based on the measured VOC concentrations, a receptor model using positive matrix factorization (PMF) coupled with information related to VOC sources was applied to identify the major VOC sources in aircraft cabins. Eight possible VOC sources were identified by the PMF method including service and humans, chemical reactions, fuels, materials, combustion, non-fuel oil, cosmetics and perfumes, and cleaning agents. Results of the source apportionment showed that 29% of the total VOC emissions in aircraft cabins can be attributed to service and humans, followed by chemical reactions (15%), fuels (13%), materials (12%), combustion (12%), non-fuel oil (9%), cosmetics and perfumes (6%) and cleaning agents (4%). The results of this study could be helpful in controlling the possible VOC sources for better cabin air quality.

Rapid monitoring of volatile organic compounds: a comparison between gas chromatography/mass spectrometry and selected ion flow tube mass spectrometry

The gold standard for monitoring volatile organic compounds (VOCs) is gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS). However, in many situations, when VOC concentrations are at the ppmv level, there are complicating factors for GC/MS. Selected ion flow tube mass spectrometry (SIFT-MS) is an emerging technique for monitoring VOCs in air. It is simpler to use and provides results in real time. Three different experiments were used for the comparison. First SIFT-MS was applied to monitor the concentrations of 25 VOCs in a mixture at concentrations up to 1 ppmv using only a generic database for known kinetic data of three reagent ions (H3O(+), NO(+) and O2(+)) with each VOC. In experiment 2, a side-by-side comparison was made of 17 VOCs at concentrations between 1 ppmv and 5 ppbv after small corrections had been made to the SIFT-MS kinetic data. In a third experiment, a side-by-side comparison examined two groups of samples received for commercial analysis. In experiment 1, 85% of the VOC concentrations were within 35% of their stated values without any calibration of the SIFT-MS instrument. In experiment 2, the two techniques yielded good correspondence between the measured VOC concentrations. In experiment 3, good correlation was found for VOCs from three of the samples. However, interferences from some product ions gave over-reported values in one sample from the SIFT-MS instrument. These three experiments showed that GC/MS was better suited to monitoring samples containing large numbers of VOCs at high concentrations. In all other applications, SIFT-MS proved simpler to use, was linear with concentration over a much wider concentration range than GC/MS and provided faster results.

Evaluation of impact of shale gas operations in the Barnett Shale region on volatile organic compounds in air and potential human health risks

Shale gas exploration and production (E&P) has experienced substantial growth across the U.S. over the last decade. The Barnett Shale, in north-central Texas, contains one of the largest, most active onshore gas fields in North America, stretching across 5000square miles and having an estimated 15,870 producing wells as of 2011. Given that these operations may occur in relatively close proximity to populated/urban areas, concerns have been expressed about potential impacts on human health. In response to these concerns, the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality established an extensive air monitoring network in the region. This network provides a unique data set for evaluating the potential impact of shale gas E&P activities on human health. As such, the objective of this study was to evaluate community-wide exposures to volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the Barnett Shale region. In this current study, more than 4.6million data points (representing data from seven monitors at six locations, up to 105 VOCs/monitor, and periods of record dating back to 2000) were evaluated. Measured air concentrations were compared to federal and state health-based air comparison values (HBACVs) to assess potential acute and chronic health effects. None of the measured VOC concentrations exceeded applicable acute HBACVs. Only one chemical (1,2-dibromoethane) exceeded its applicable chronic HBACV, but it is not known to be associated with shale gas production activities. Annual average concentrations were also evaluated in deterministic and probabilistic risk assessments and all risks/hazards were below levels of concern. The analyses demonstrate that, for the extensive number of VOCs measured, shale gas production activities have not resulted in community-wide exposures to those VOCs at levels that would pose a health concern. With the high density of active wells in this region, these findings may be useful for understanding potential health risks in other shale play regions.

진주시 대기중 휘발성 유기화합물의 농도특성 기초조사

In order to study the seasonal patterns and possible origins of air concentrations of volatile organic compounds(VOC), measurements were taken with GC-MS at 3 sampling sites in Jinju for 12 months from Mar. 2010 to Feb. 2011. Atmospheric VOC are sampled on tubes containing solid adsorbents(Tenax TA) with a time resolution of 2hrs. Composition and concentration of VOC are analysed with a GC system equipped with thermal desorption apparatus(ATD). The most abundant compound appeared to be Toluene, Ethylbenzene and m,p-Xylene. The mean concentrations of Benzene were 0.20 ppb at GN site, 0.18 ppb at DA site, and 0.25 ppb at SP site, respectively. VOC concentration showed a strong seasonal variation, with higher concentrations during the spring and lower concentrations during the summer. The results showed that monthly fluctuations in measured VOC concentrations depended on variations in the strength of sources, as well as on photochemical activity and meteorological conditions. In Jinju, the total VOC emissions for 2009 were estimated to be 4,407 ton/year by Clean Air Policy Support System(CAPSS). It is shown that solvent use 57.5%(2,534 ton/yr), waste treatment and disposal 23.3%(1,025 ton/yr), and mobil source-road traffic 12.2%(537 ton/yr) are the most significant anthropogenic source.

Characteristics and source apportionment of VOCs measured in Shanghai, China

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were measured from 2007 to 2010 at the center of Shanghai, China. Because VOCs are important precursors for ozone photochemical formation, detailed information of VOC sources needs to be investigated. The results show that the measured VOC concentrations in Shanghai are dominated by alkanes (43%) and aromatics (30%), following by halo-hydrocarbons (14%) and alkenes (6%). Based on the measured VOC concentrations, a receptor model (PMF; positive matrix factorization) coupled with the information related to VOC sources (the distribution of major industrial complex, meteorological conditions, etc.) is applied to identify the major VOC sources in Shanghai. The result shows that seven major VOC sources are identified by the PMF method, including (1) vehicle related source which contributes to 25% of the measured VOC concentrations, (2) solvent based industrial source to 17%, (3) fuel evaporation to 15%, (4) paint solvent usage to 15%, (5) steel related industrial production to 12%, (6) biomass/biofuel burning to 9%, and (7) coal burning to 7%. Furthermore, ozone formation potential related to VOC sources is calculated by the MIR (maximum incremental reactivity) technique. The most significant VOC source for ozone formation potential is solvent based industrial sources (27%), paint solvent usage (24%), vehicle related emissions (17%), steel related industrial productions (14%), fuel evaporations (9%), coal burning (6%), and biomass/biofuel burning (3%). The weekend effect on the VOC concentrations shows that VOC concentrations are generally higher in the weekdays than in the weekends at the sampling site, suggesting that traffic conditions and human activities have important impacts on the VOC emissions in Shanghai.

Analysis of VOC emissions using PCA/APCS receptor model at city of Shanghai, China

Qualification of the sources of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and their effects on city air pollution are crucial issues to develop an effective air pollution control strategy in many polluted large cities of China. In this study, the VOC concentrations measured in Shanghai, China from 2006 to 2008 are analyzed. A receptor model (PCA/APCS; Principal Component Analysis/Absolute Principal Component Scores) is applied for identifying the contributions of individual VOC sources to VOC concentrations. Using the PCA/APCS technique, five and four surrogated VOC sources are classified in the center of Shanghai city in summer and in winter. In summer, the five VOC sources include PCs1 (liquefied petroleum gas/natural gas leakage and gasoline evaporation), PCs2 (vehicle related emissions), PCs3 (solvent usages), PCs4 (industrial productions), and PCs5 (biomass/biofuel/coal burning and other natural sources). In winter, the four VOC sources include PCw1 (liquefied petroleum gas/natural gas leakage and gasoline evaporation), PCw2 (solvent usages and industrial productions), PCw3 (vehicle related emissions), and PCw4 (biomass/biofuel/coal burning). The result suggests that during summer, 24, 28, 17, 18, and 13% of the measured VOC concentrations were estimated due to the PCs1, PCs2, PCs3, PCs4, and PCs5 VOC sources, respectively. During winter, 17, 48, 23, and 12% of the measured VOC concentrations were attributed to the PCw1, PCw2, PCw3, and PCw4 VOC sources, respectively. For aromatic concentrations, 35% of the concentrations were resulted from solvent usage (PCs3), following by industrial productions (PCs4) of 27%, and vehicle emissions (PCs2) of 19%. For alkene concentrations, the two largest contributors were due to gasoline industrial and vehicle emissions in both summer and winter. For alkane concentrations, the largest sources were due to gasoline industrial emissions (PCs1) and vehicle emissions (PCs2) in summer. In winter, vehicle emissions (PCw3), solvent usages/industrial productions (PCw2), and gasoline industrial emissions (PCw1) were the major sources. For halo-hydrocarbon concentrations, biomass/biofuel/coal burning and other natural sources were the major sources in both summer and winter.

Source Characterization of Volatile Organic Compounds Affecting the Air Quality in a Coastal Urban Area of South Texas

Selected Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) emitted from various anthropogenic sources including industries and motor vehicles act as primary precursors of ozone, while some VOC are classified as air toxic compounds. Significantly large VOC emission sources impact the air quality in Corpus Christi, Texas. This urban area is located in a semi-arid region of South Texas and is home to several large petrochemical refineries and industrial facilities along a busy ship-channel. The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality has setup two continuous ambient monitoring stations (CAMS 633 and 634) along the ship channel to monitor VOC concentrations in the urban atmosphere. The hourly concentrations of 46 VOC compounds were acquired from TCEQ for a comprehensive source apportionment study. The primary objective of this study was to identify and quantify the sources affecting the ambient air quality within this urban airshed. Principal Component Analysis/Absolute Principal Component Scores (PCA/APCS) was applied to the dataset. PCA identified five possible sources accounting for 69% of the total variance affecting the VOC levels measured at CAMS 633 and six possible sources affecting CAMS 634 accounting for 75% of the total variance. APCS identified natural gas emissions to be the major source contributor at CAMS 633 and it accounted for 70% of the measured VOC concentrations. The other major sources identified at CAMS 633 included flare emissions (12%), fugitive gasoline emissions (9%), refinery operations (7%), and vehicle exhaust (2%). At CAMS 634, natural gas sources were identified as the major source category contributing to 31% of the observed VOC. The other sources affecting this site included: refinery operations (24%), flare emissions (22%), secondary industrial processes (12%), fugitive gasoline emissions (8%) and vehicle exhaust (3%).

Determination of liquid diffusivities of VOC (paraffins and aromatic hydrocarbons) in phthalates

An investigation relative to a regenerative absorption-based process for removal of volatile organic compounds (VOC) in high-boiling solvents, namely phthalates, is presented here, discussing largely the influences of the type of VOC (linear paraffins, iso and/or cyclic paraffins or aromatic hydrocarbons), of the phthalate and of the temperature parameter. In a previous paper was published the solubility study of VOC in phthalates. The aim of this work is the determination of the liquid diffusion coefficients of VOC into phthalates. Absorption experiments were achieved in a wetted-wall column characterized by a co-current contact mode between gas and liquid phases. The temperature range (10–40 °C) was investigated. Liquid diffusivities were determined by an indirect method requiring the adequate simulation of the absorption test runs which has to fit the experimentally measured VOC concentrations of the exit gas. Orders of magnitude of estimated parameters are here discussed and attempts at correlations are presented.

Estimating Volatile Organic Compound Concentrations in Selected Microenvironments Using Time–Activity and Personal Exposure Data

Repeated measures of personal exposure to 14 volatile organic compounds (VOC) were obtained over 3 seasons for 70 healthy, nonsmoking adults living in Minneapolis–St. Paul. Matched data were also available for participants' time–activity patterns, and measured VOC concentrations outdoors in the community and indoors in residences. A novel modeling approach employing hierarchical Bayesian techniques was used to estimate VOC concentrations (posterior mode) and variability (credible intervals) in five microenvironments: (1) indoors at home; (2) indoors at work/school; (3) indoors in other locations; (4) outdoors in any location; and (5) in transit. Estimated concentrations tended to be highest in “other” indoor microenvironments (e.g., grocery stores, restaurants, shopping malls), intermediate in the indoor work/school and residential microenvironments, and lowest in the outside and in-transit microenvironments. Model estimates for all 14 VOC were reasonable approximations of measured median concentrations in the indoor residential microenvironment. The largest predicted contributor to cumulative (2-day) personal exposure for all 14 VOC was the indoor residential environment. Model-based results suggest that indoors-at-work/school and indoors-at-other-location microenvironments were the second or third largest contributors for all VOC, while the outside-in-any-location and in-transit microenvironments appeared to contribute negligibly to cumulative personal exposure. Results from a mixed-effects model indicate that being in or near a garage increased personal exposure to o-xylene, m/p-xylene, benzene, ethylbenzene, and toluene, and leaving windows and doors at home open for 6 h or more decreased personal exposure to 13 of 14 VOC, all except trichloroethylene.

Daily, weekly, and seasonal time courses of VOC concentrations in a semi-urban area near Barcelona

In order to study the daily, weekly, and seasonal patterns and possible origins of air concentrations of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), measurements were taken on a minute-by-minute basis with a PTR-MS in the vicinity of a highway in a semi-urban site near Barcelona. Four periods of the year were chosen and samples were taken under different meteorological conditions and at different phenological stages of the surrounding vegetation. None of the measured VOCs concentrations exceeded air-quality guidelines. The results showed that diurnal, weekly, and seasonal fluctuations in measured VOC concentrations depended on variations in the strength of sources, as well as on photochemical activity and meteorological conditions. There was a decrease in concentrations in most VOCs when mixing depth, photochemical destruction, and wind speed increased at midday. On the other hand, high values of some VOCs occurred at night when the strength of their sinks and the mixing layer decreased. Interestingly, in June, night emissions and concentration peaks of methanol and acetone occurred in periods with dew formation and no wind. VOCs related to anthropogenic emissions presented a weekly pattern of variation with a clear distinction being found between working days and the weekend. The seasonal variation showed higher levels in December for all VOCs, except for isoprene. The thinning of the mixing layer leading to greater concentrations of volatiles and lower wind speeds in winter could account for those higher VOC levels. Benzene and toluene originated mainly from anthropogenic emissions. The sources of acetaldehyde, methanol, and acetone appeared to be mainly biogenic and these compounds were the most abundant of all the measured VOCs. Isoprene concentration patterns suggest a predominantly anthropogenic origin in December and March and a mainly biogenic origin in June and October. All these data provide useful information on the dynamics of VOCs in an area where ozone levels in summer exceed quite often the standard protection thresholds for O 3.
