An Identification of Phrasal Verb in the Movie Entitled “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban”

Language has a great effect as an important part of human life that is always used in the daily life by human being. It is important to teach and educate the students as ESL/EFL students about phrasal verbs in order to make them understand and capable in using phrasal verbs especially when they have interaction in English. This study aims to analyze the phrasal verbs, types and the meaning of phrasal verbs that are found in the movie entitled “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban”. The instruments of this study are the researcher as the main instrument and a checklist that is used to collect the data. This study used documentation as the method of the data collection. The result of this study showed that there are 102 of phrasal verbs that were found in the movie. There were two types of phrasal verbs that were found in this study, such as transitive phrasal verb (separable phrasal verb and inseparable phrasal verb) and intransitive phrasal verb. Both of the types of the phrasal verbs were found in the movie of this study. Those are consisted of 74 of intransitive phrasal verb and 28 of transitive phrasal verb (14 of separable phrasal verb and 14 of inseparable phrasal verb).

When concept-based language instruction meets cognitive linguistics: teaching English phrasal verbs with up and out

Abstract The study investigates the efficacy of instructional practices informed by an integration of cognitive linguistics (CL) and concept-based language instruction (C-BLI) on EFL learners’ learning of polysemous English phrasal verbs. Such efficacy is also compared with that of a traditional instruction in which meanings of phrasal verbs are considered as unanalyzable and arbitrary and acquired through rote-learning. In an 8-week quasi-experiment with a pretest, immediate-posttest, delayed-posttest design, 93 intermediate-level Chinese university students were divided into a cognitive, a traditional, and a control group. The results suggested that the CL-C-BLI integrated instruction facilitated the learners’ memorization and recall of the phrasal verbs’ meanings, but it was not so effective in promoting their recognition and distinction of phrasal verbs’ meanings in sentential contexts as the traditional instruction did. This study contributes to the field by adding evidence of innovative instructional practices in ways that are both usage-inspired and grounded in developmental education.

A Semantic Analysis of Phrasal Verbs Produced by Hillary Clinton in The Commencement Speech

The aim of this research is to analyse a semantic analysis of phrasal verbs produced by Hillary Clinton in her commencement speech. The writer focused on the implied meanings and the phrasal verbs used by Hillary Clinton during her speech at Wellesley College in 2017. In this analysis, the writer used a qualitative descriptive method and a library research technique to collect the data. In analysing the implied meanings of phrasal verbs, the writer applied Geoffrey Leech’s theory. According to the result, the writer found that there were 10 or 25% phrasal verbs with conceptual meaning, 4 or 10% phrasal verbs with connotative meaning, 16 or 39% phrasal verbs with affective meaning, 7 or 17% phrasal verbs with social meaning, and 3 or 9% with thematic meaning. Therefore, the most dominant meaning in phrasal verbs produced by Hillary Clinton was affective meaning. Meanwhile, in analysing the phrasal verbs, the writer used the theory from Larsen-Freeman and Celce-Murcia. There were three types of phrasal verbs categorized into literal phrasal verbs, aspectual phrasal verbs, and idiomatic phrasal verbs. It can be concluded that there were 17 or 42% literal phrasal verbs, 10 or 25% aspectual phrasal verbs, and 13 or 33% idiomatic phrasal verbs. Thus, the most frequent type of phrasal verbs used during the speech were literal phrasal verbs.

Translation of Multi-Word Verbs in English Cookbook into Indonesian

This paper examines translation of multi-word verbs in English cookbook into Indonesian. This study emphasises on the analysis of the translations of multi-word verbs in English cookbook and its translation into Indonesian. The classification and the meaning of phrasal verbs are proposed by Quirk (1985). The research is descriptive qualitative. Methods of collecting data are observation and documentation. The data source was taken from English cookbook entitled The Essential Book of Sauces & Dressings from Murdoch Books published by Periplus, Singapore and its translation into Indonesian entitled Saus dan Dressing yang Esensial by Hadyana P. published by Periplus, Indonesia. The study shows that there are three types of multi-word verbs found in data source. They are phrasal verbs, prepositional verbs and phrasal prepositional verbs.

A semantic and pragmatic approach to verb particle constructions used in cartoons and puns

 ABSTRACT
 The aim of this paper is to discuss a special type of verb particle construction in English; namely, phrasal verbs used in cartoons and puns. Granted that the meaning of phrasal verbs may range from literal to idiomatic, their use in cartoons is artistically and linguistically exploited through a combination of verbal and non-verbal cues to convey humor, satire and fun. Our assumption is that this combination rests on the premise that a double reading of phrasal verbs in certain cartoons and puns is possible. To illustrate this, a sample of cartoons using phrasal verbs and puns (taken from www.ecenglish.com, English Teacher Online LLC) will be analyzed showing how the correspondence between the cartoon as a visual mode and the phrasal verb as a linguistic form can yield both literal interpretations and idiomatic ones. Phrasal verbs are also shown to violate Gricean maxims and to depend largely, in their interpretation, on extra linguistic factors.

This study aimed at: 1) describing the types of phrasal verbs used in movie entitled “Begin Again”. 2) meaning of phrasal verbs by using syntax used in movie. This study was descriptive qualitative research mainly focused on discovery rather than using statistical analysis. This study used phrasal verb in movie as the object. This study used researcher as main instrument and dictionary to help researcher in collecting the data. This study showed total usage of phrasal verbs in movie. There are 42 Transitive (22 separable, 20 inseparable), 65 Intransitive. Teachers teach about phrasal verb easier and entertaining because object was easier to understand and avoid boredom in learning. Students directly know when they use phrasal verb. Students can be help them to know about phrasal verb and learn something by watching movie which is good for their behaviour. For other researcher can be an additional resource to make similar study.

A COGNITIVE-LINGUISTIC INVESTIGATION OF ENGLISH PHRASAL VERBS RELATED TO PLANTS

The focus of the paper is on the semantics of English phrasal verbs whose constituent verb is related to the concept of plants. The investigated set of verbs includes twenty-two phrasal verbs featuring the particles out, off, up, through, in and away. The analysis is conducted in the framework of cognitive semantics, which states that the meaning of phrasal verbs can be analysed in view of their constituent particles and the interplay between the verb meaning and the particle senses. It is concluded that the general meaning of the examined phrasal verbs is a result of different spatial configurations underlying the conceptual-semantic structure of the constituent particles, while their specific meanings are motivated by different conceptual metonymies stemming from the constituent verb. Numerous abstract meanings are additionally derived via various submetaphors of the basic metaphor complex abstract systems are plants embedded in the conceptual framework of the constituent verbs.

TRANSLATION OF PHRASAL VERBS INTO INDONESIAN

This study has two aims, those are to analyze: (1) the classification of phrasal verbs found in a short story and the classification of their translations in Indonesian done by some English teachers from some primary schools in Denpasar, and (2) how the meaning of phrasal verbs in SL help to determine their equivalents in TL. The classification and the meaning of phrasal verbs are proposed by McArthur and Atkins (1975). Based on the analysis there were three categories of 34 phrasal verbs found in the data source, those are: intransitive verbs, transitive separable verbs, and transitive fusedverbs. The results found that most of the phrasal verbs are included into transitive separable verbs and from the three categories of phrasal verbs; they were translated mostly into transitive verbs. Meanwhile, the meanings of phrasal verbs in SL determine the suitable equivalents for the phrasal verbs in TL since there were variants equivalents given in the translations.Keywords: Phrasal verbs, Translation, Words meaning

The meaning and use of phrasal verbs at C1 level

Despite the fact that phrasal verbs are used in everyday English, foreign learners avoid learning and using them for their complexity and impossibility to understand the meaning of a phrasal verb from its separate parts (a verb itself and a particle separately). As a result of that many learners at C1 level, although being fluent speakers, experience various difficulties using them. The focus of the paper is placed on the meaning and the use of phrasal verbs and the difficulties which students find at C1 level of the English language. The analysis in this paper is based on the phrasal verbs used in the book “Objective CAE” (O`Dell & Broadhead, 2008, Cambridge University Press). In this paper we are also interested in finding out why it is so difficult to understand and use phrasal verbs, the interaction between their meaning and understanding considering their polysemоus features. The results of this analysis may be useful for all ESL teachers to help them understand the difficulties their students face when dealing with phrasal verbs, especially at C1 level. Furthermore, it can be a valuable source for teachers how to introduce the phrasal verbs to their students and thus help them master phrasal verbs in both spoken and written discourse.
