O20 Evaluation of the knowledge of hospital cleaning staff about prevention of nosocomial infections

Results: Out of 290 hospital cleaning staff, 240 (82.7%, 122 male, 118 female, aged 36.2±8.7) were included in the study. When evaluated according to their educational status, 55.4% had graduated from primary school. Fifty-four percent of the staff had been working in the hospital for more than three years. Mean knowledge level was 18.15±3.97 (maximum 24). Their knowledge level was not associated with gender, educational status, duration of employment or receipt of formal education about hospital-acquired infections before starting their jobs (P > 0.05); however, mean knowledge level of the staff working in the clinics was found higher than that of the staff working in administrative sections (P < 0.05).

Knowledge, practice and attitude towards standard isolation precautions in Iranian medical students

Medical students are at high risk of being exposed to blood-borne pathogens. The aim of this study was to identify the levels of knowledge, attitude and practice of medical students regarding standard isolation precautions in Iran. A questionnaire was filled out by 468 medical students in their fifth to seventh year of study. Their mean knowledge, attitude and practice levels of standard isolation precautions were 6.1+/-1.5 (maximum possible score 9), 32.3+/-3.5 (out of 45), and 2.3+/-1.6 (out of 9), respectively. Statistically significant positive correlations were observed between knowledge and attitude, knowledge and practice, and practice and attitude. Ninety percent of medical students in Shiraz had received no education of standard isolation precautions, and 75% of respondents wanted more education on standard isolation precautions. Education on infection control issues should not only be focused on healthcare workers, but should also include medical students.

Culture as Consensus: A Theory of Culture and Informant Accuracy

This paper presents and tests a formal mathematical model for the analysis of informant responses to systematic interview questions. We assume a situation in which the ethnographer does not know how much each informant knows about the cultural domain under consideration nor the answers to the questions. The model simultaneously provides an estimate of the cultural competence or knowledge of each informant and an estimate of the correct answer to each question asked of the informant. The model currently handles true‐false, multiple‐choice, andfill‐in‐the‐blank type question formats. In familiar cultural domains the model produces good results from as few as four informants. The paper includes a table showing the number of informants needed to provide stated levels of confidence given the mean level of knowledge among the informants. Implications are discussed.

Peer Interaction and Group Education for Adaptation to Disease in Adolescents with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus.

Objective:To evaluate the effects of group interaction and training in the adaptation process to disease in adolescents with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM).Methods:This experimental study with pre- and post-test control groups was conducted in the pediatric endocrine clinic at a university hospital. The data were collected through descriptive data form, social support assessment scale, self-esteem inventory and information form. The data collection forms were administered four times with 3-month intervals to the study and control groups. Training, peer interaction and social support attempts were provided to the study group.Results:After the training and peer interaction, it was determined that there was a decrease in HbA1c levels and an increase in self-esteem (p<0.001) and mean scores of social support (p<0.05), and significant increase in knowledge levels (p<0.001). As for the adolescents in the control group, it was determined that there was no change in their HbA1c levels (p>0.05), and that there was no difference in their self-esteem scores, mean knowledge levels (p>0.05) in comparison with their pre-test scores.Conclusion:The training and peer interaction in adolescents were found to be effective in the adaptation process to the disease.
