Study on the influencing factors of impact resistance of shear thickening fluids filled foam

PurposeThe present study assesses the impact resistance of the shear thickening fluids-filled (STFs-filled) foam through drop-hammer impact tests.Design/methodology/approachThe maximum residual impact load and specific impact energy absorption rate of STF-filled foam are studied with varying thickness (4–14 mm), densities (0.35–0.6 g/cm3) and hardness (40–50 Rockwell Hardness C Scale (HRC)) under different ambient temperatures (−20−20 °C) and impact energies (25–75 J).FindingsThe following conclusions are obtained from this study: (1) the higher the impact energy, the greater the maximum residual impact force and energy absorption efficiency of the material; (2) the impact resistance of STF-filled foam can be improved with the decrease of ambient temperature, achieving the highest energy absorption rate at −10?. (3) STF-filled foam substrate has the highest impact resistance, the lowest maximum residual impact force and the highest energy absorption coefficient when the density is 0.35  g/cm3, the hardness is 45HC and the thickness is 10 mm.Originality/valueThis is the first paper to analyze the impact of both environmental factors and material properties on the impact resistance of STF-filled foam. The results show that the decrease in temperature and the increase in hardness can enhance the impact resistance of STF-filled foam.

Circularly polarized implantable MIMO antenna for skin, brain and heart implantation with wide axial ratio bandwidth

SummaryA unique MIMO antenna with circular polarization characteristics that works similarly for skin, brain and heart phantoms has been proposed in this paper. The twin rectangular X‐shaped slot that serves as the basic structure of the proposed antenna is entirely planar and low‐profile but has a defective ground plane. For three different phantoms, the proposed antenna resonates at 2.4–2.45 GHz ISM band. With a dimension of , the antenna exhibits compactness. Rogers RT/duroid 6010 substrate material has been used to fabricate the antenna in order to validate the designed antenna structure. Utilizing the high dielectric material for both substrate and superstrate, both skin‐mimicking gel and minced hog meat were employed in the experiment setup at 2.45 GHz ISM band. At ISM band, −28.3 dBi has been observed has realized peak gain. The obtained fractional bandwidth (FBW) and Axial Ratio Bandwidth (ARBW) values are 30.67% and 45%, respectively. Also, the maximum specific absorption rate (SAR) values are found to be in the acceptable limit regulated by IEEE.

Implanted Rhombus Ring Partial Inset-Fed Circularly Polarized Microstrip Monopole Antenna for WBAN Applications

In the present article, a design approach to accomplish circular polarization-based rhombus ring microstrip-fed monopole antenna working at 5.8 GHz for wireless body area network (WBAN) applications is proposed. The input impedance calculation using an electromagnetic theory of transmission line in a travelling wave coupled to the parallel-plate inductor model is conducted. Radiated electric field pattern calculation of the conventional square ring microstrip patch antenna (MSPA) using Biot and Savart’s law is reported. The circular polarization of the proposed antenna is accomplished by loading the radiating path with a capacitive element sectioned in the neighbourhood of the feed line. The proposed planar monopole antenna of volume 0.38λ0×0.38λ0×0.029λ0 (λ0 is evaluated at the resonant frequency of 5.8 GHz) achieves a -10 dB impedance bandwidth of 86.20% in the band (3-8 GHz) with a stable real gain of 8.29 dBic in circular polarization at the resonant frequency of 5.8 GHz and axial ration bandwidth of about 32.75% in the (5-6.9 GHz) band. Specific absorption rate (SAR) evaluation of the studied antenna is computed numerically on a part of the human phantom model to justify its use in WBAN applications. It is noted that the maximum amount of radiation absorbed by a part of the human phantom model is limited to a maximum SAR value of 1.45 W/kg and 0.754 W/kg on 1 g and 10 g of tissue mass, respectively. The prospective design has been fabricated and tested, and the experimental results are in good agreement with the simulation outcomes.

The effect of frequency (64-498MHz) on specific absorption rate adjacent to metallic orthopedic screws in MRI: A numerical simulation study.

The imaging of patients with implanted electrically-conductive devices via magnetic resonance imaging at ultra-high fields is hampered by uncertainties relating to the potential for inducing tissue heating adjacent to the implant due to coupling of energy from the incident electromagnetic field into the implant. Existing data in the peer-reviewed literature of comparisons across field strengths of tissue heating and its surrogate, the specific absorption rate (SAR), is scarce and contradictory, leading to further doubts pertaining to the safety of imaging patients with such devices. The radiofrequency-induced SAR adjacent to orthopedic screws of varying length and at frequencies of 64 to 498MHz was investigated via full-wave electromagnetic simulations, to provide an accurate comparison of SAR across MRI field strengths. Dipole antennas were used for RF transmission to achieve a uniform electric field tangential to the screws located 120mm above the antenna midpoints, embedded in a bone-mimicking material. The input power to the antennas was constrained to achieve the following targets without the screw present: (i) E=100V/m, (ii) B1 + =2 μT, and (iii) global-average-SAR=3.2W/kg. Simulations were performed with a spatial resolution of 0.2mm in the volume surrounding the screws, resulting in 76-137 MCells, noting the maximum 1g-averaged SAR value in each case. Simulations were repeated at 128 and 297MHz for screws embedded in muscle tissue. The peak SAR, occurring at the resonant screw length, substantially increased as the frequency decreased when the input power to the dipole antenna was constrained to achieve constant electric field in background tissue at the screws' locations. A similar pattern was observed when constraining input power to achieve constant B1 + and global-average-SAR. The dielectric properties of the tissue in which the screws were embedded dominated the SAR comparisons between 297 and 128MHz. The study design allowed for a direct comparison to be performed of SAR across frequencies and implant lengths without the confounding effect of variable incident electric field. Lower frequencies produced substantially larger SAR values for implants approaching the resonant length for the worst-case uniform incident electric field along the screws' length. The data may inform risk-benefit assessments for imaging patients with orthopedic implants at the new clinical field strength of 7Tesla.

Local SAR management strategies to use two-channel RF shimming for fetal MRI at 3 T.

This study evaluates the imaging performance of two-channel RF-shimming for fetal MRI at 3 T using four different local specific absorption rate (SAR) management strategies. Due to the ambiguity of safe local SAR levels for fetal MRI, local SAR limits for RF shimming were determined based on either each individual's own SAR levels in standard imaging mode (CP mode) or the maximum SAR level observed across seven pregnant body models in CP mode. Local SAR was constrained either indirectly by further constraining the whole-body SAR (wbSAR) or directly by using subject-specific local SAR models. Each strategy was evaluated by the improvement of the transmit field efficiency (average |B1 + |) and nonuniformity (|B1 + | variation) inside the fetus compared with CP mode for the same wbSAR. Constraining wbSAR when using RF shimming decreases B1 + efficiency inside the fetus compared with CP mode (by 12%-30% on average), making it inefficient for SAR management. Using subject-specific models with SAR limits based on each individual's own CP mode SAR value, B1 + efficiency and nonuniformity are improved on average by 6% and 13% across seven pregnant models. In contrast, using SAR limits based on maximum CP mode SAR values across seven models, B1 + efficiency and nonuniformity are improved by 13% and 25%, compared with the best achievable improvement without SAR constraints: 15% and 26%. Two-channel RF-shimming can safely and significantly improve the transmit field inside the fetus when subject-specific models are used with local SAR limits based on maximum CP mode SAR levels in the pregnant population.

Terahertz Microstrip Patch Antenna for Breast Tumour Detection

Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers among Malaysian women. It is critical to discover strategies to detect the tumour early on. Terahertz (THz) frequency provides excellent qualities for detecting tumours such as low photon energy and non-ionising radiation as compared to prior methods such as mammography, ultrasound, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) that use optical to X-ray frequencies. The purpose of this work is to analyse and locate a breast tumour as well as to compute the maximum specific absorption rate (SAR) value. It was designed a THz rectangular microstrip patch antenna with an inset feed. To improve the antenna's performance, graphene was used for the patch and polyimide for the substrate. This antenna covered a bandwidth of 31.6 GHz and worked in the frequency range of 0.283-0.599 THz. To identify the location of a tumour, compute the SAR value, and localise the tumour, SAR simulation was used. The maximum SAR shifted to the tumor's position due to greater absorption rate around its tissue due to higher dielectric constant features. It was calculated that 1e-05g of average mass is required to be less than total tissue mass, which is 2.0063e-05g. SAR study revealed a maximum SAR value of 2.49391e+06 W/kg, which was not more than the overall absorption rate for human body safety. The SAR calculation result revealed that the tumour is within the range of the tumor's initial location.

Specific Absorption Rate and Temperature Distributions in the Human Head with Implanted Deep Brain Stimulation Subjected to Mobile Phone Electromagnetic Radiation

Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS), also known as the brain pacemaker, has gradually evolved from a scientific experiment into an effective clinical treatment for movement disorders as a method of improving movement disorders. At present, there are few studies on the effects of 5G mobile phone antenna radiation on the heads of adult patients implanted with DBS. In this study, COMSOL Multiphysics was used to establish a mobile phone model with a 5G/4G patch antenna, a real human head, and the DBS models. Then, we calculated the specific absorption rate (SAR) of various layers of the head tissues with the mobile phone at different distances from the human head, as well as the temperature change rule of the head and the DBS irradiated by the antenna for 30 min. The simulation results showed that when the frequency is 3500 MHz, the electromagnetic radiation of the phone to the patient’s head is generally greater than that of the 2400 MHz. When at 3500 MHz, the distance between the phone and the head is inversely proportional to the SAR value; thus, when the distance between the phone and the head is 1 cm, the maximum SAR value—which is 1.132 W/kg—appeared in the skin layer of the head with implanted DBS. But it is worth noting that the largest temperature rise appeared in the brain layer at 2400 MHz and at a distance of 1 cm, which is 0.2148 °C. Although the SAR values and temperature rise obtained from all simulations are below the limits of 2 W/kg and +1 °C specified by the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP), we still recommend that patients with implanted DBS maintain a distance when using the phones.

Comprehensive in-vitro and magnetic hyperthermia investigation of biocompatible non-stoichiometric Zn0.5Ca0.5Fe2O4 and Mg0.5Ca0.5Fe2O4 nanoferrites on lung cancer cell lines

In this research, the suitability and potential of two biocompatible mixed valent non-stoichiometric spinel nanoferrites viz., Zn0.5Ca0.5Fe2O4 (ZCNF) and Mg0.5Ca0.5Fe2O4 (MCNF) with a minor impurity of CaCO3 have been explored for magnetic hyperthermia and in-vitro cytotoxicity against normal and lung cancer cell lines. Nanocrystalline samples of ZCNF and MCNF in fcc structure were synthesized using the citrate-based sol-gel method and characterized by a variety of standard techniques. 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy, electron spin resonance and dc-magnetometry studies revealed that ZCNF is dominantly superparamagnetic while, MCNF is a soft ferrimagnet at 300 K. The maximum specific absorption rate (SAR) for 1 mg/mL suspension of nanoferrite powder in de-ionized water was found to be 179 W/g and 338 W/g for ZCNF and MCNF, respectively. Further, the highest hyperthermia temperature of 41.5 °C and 52 °C was achieved in 900 s at 15.98 kA/m for ZCNF and MCNF, respectively. Both ZCNF and MCNF showed good cytocompatibility with a tested concentration of 0.5 mg/mL against the human embryonic kidney HEK-293 (>75% cell viability) cell line. Additionally, simulated in-vitro treatment at an optimum magnetic hyperthermia temperature of 45 °C for 30 min in the presence of ZCNF and MCNF powder (up to a concentration of 1 mg/mL) led to suppression of ∼55% lung cancer cell lines (A549) while, in similar simulated condition the cell viability of normal HEK 293 cell lines remain unaffected. In summary, ZCNF and MCNF are appropriate therapeutic nanomaterials for magnetic hyperthermia-related cancer therapies.

Functional analysis in the body environment for a circularly polarized hybrid reconfigurable textile antenna

This paper presents the functional analysis of a hybrid reconfigurable circularly polarized (CP) textile antenna in different on-body environments. The Tai-Chi sign inspires the current textile antenna design, where the primary radiator and ground elements are sickle-shaped structures. Hybrid reconfigurability was achieved by successfully operating two RF PIN-Diodes in the basal ground plane’s elliptical and rectangular structures. Thus, four switching states are attained by operating the textenna at 3.5, 4.5 and 5.4 GHz in the S1. 4.39 and 5.8 GHz in S2, 5 and 5.9 GHz in S3 and 2.4, 4.3, 5.8, and 9.4 GHz in S4 state. The reconfigurable textenna was devised to function on the human body. Its functional behavior in proximity to the human body was rigorously validated through testing involving bending at various vertical and horizontal angles. Additionally, a Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) analysis was conducted using a three-layered human phantom. The results revealed that the maximum SAR value is below 1.6 W Kg−1 for 1 gram of tissue and 2 W kg−1 for 10 grams of tissue. These findings establish the safe operational parameters for the proposed model. The developed antenna functionalities were also tested in other circumstances like body sweating environment and interaction with body fluids (Blood, Plasma, SBF and DMEM). In these body fluid conditions, a peak gain of 4.88 dBi at S1, 6.97 dBi at S2, 7.99 dBi at S3, and 4.13 dBi at S4, was observed while interacting with Plasma, and the measured efficiency in the above configuration is between 77%–79%. The textenna durability analysis was measured using an electrochemical workstation while interacting with different body fluids. All these results confessed the applicability of the developed antennas for on-body wireless communication applications in different on-body conditions.

Magnetic xanthan gum-silk fibroin hydrogel: A nanocomposite for biological and hyperthermia applications

A magnetic xanthan hydrogel/silk fibroin nanobiocomposite (XG hydrogel/SF/Fe3O4) was designed, fabricated, and characterized using analyzing methods such as FT-IR, EDX, FE-SEM, XRD, TGA, and VSM to evaluate the exact structure of product nanobiocomposite. The FE-SEM images reveal the presence of spherical shapes exhibiting a narrow size range and homogeneous distribution, measuring between 30 and 35 nm in diameter. The VSM analysis demonstrates the superparamagnetic properties of the XG hydrogel/SF/Fe3O4 nanobiocomposite, exhibiting a magnetic saturation of 54 emu/g at room temperature. The biological response of the nanobiocomposite scaffolds was assessed through cell viability and red blood cell hemolytic assays. MCF10A cells were exposed to a concentration of 1.75 mg/mL of the nanobiocomposite, and after 2 and 3 days, the cell viability was found to be 96.95 % and 97.02 %, respectively. The hemolytic effect was nearly 0 % even at higher concentrations (2 mg/mL). Furthermore, the magnetic nanobiocomposite showed excellent potential for hyperthermia applications, with a maximum specific absorption rate of 7 W/g for 1 mg/mL of the sample under a magnetic field in different frequencies (100, 200, 300, and 400 MHz) and 5 to 20 min time intervals.

Complementary analysis of specific absorption rate safety for an 8Tx/16Rx array with central symmetry of elements for magnetic resonance imaging of the human heart and abdominopelvic organs at 7 T.

A complementary safety assessment of the specific absorption rate (SAR) of the electromagnetic energy was performed in a prototype 8Tx/16Rx RF array for cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) at 7 T. The study aimed to address two critical aspects of 7-T SAR safety not always explicitly examined by coil vendors: (i) the influence of an RF-array position on a peak SAR value, and (ii) the risk of exceeding the permitted maximal SAR in the tissue surrounding conductive passive implants. The full-wave 3D electromagnetic simulations for the thorax with shifted array position and the whole-body volume in the presence of a dental retainer, an intrauterine contraceptive device (IUD), and a hip joint implant, were performed for two human voxel models. The effect of the array displacement on the SAR was simulated for seven array locations on the thorax shifted from the central position in different directions on 50 mm. The peak SAR values for both models were analyzed for the three phase-only transmit vectors optimized for B1 + homogeneity and transmit efficiency. Peak SAR values due to the shifts of the array position increase up to ≈50%. The worst-case peak SAR value for a dental retainer was found to be in the range of 10% of the maximal SAR in the tissue within the array's borders. For the IUD and artificial hip joint implants the effect was found to be negligible (peak SAR < 1% of the SAR within array borders). In addition to simulations for cardiac MRI, we performed a preliminary B1 + shimming and SAR-safety analysis for the same RF-array at various positions lower on the body trunk to assess a potential application in imaging abdominopelvic organs (prostate, kidney, and liver). The most promising target for an ad hoc alternative application of the array was found to be the prostate.

Miniaturized meander‐line dual‐band implantable antenna for biotelemetry applications

AbstractA dual‐band bio‐implantable compact antenna with a meander‐line structure is presented. The proposed meander‐line antenna resonates at the industrial, scientific, and medical (2.4 GHz) and wireless medical telemetry (1.4 GHz) bands. The meander‐line structure is selected as a radiating patch given its versatile and effective design. With a dimension of only , the designed antenna is compact. Considering a skin phantom, the proposed antenna was designed, optimized, and simulated. The Rogers RT/duroid 6010 substrate material with high dielectric constant was used to fabricate the meander‐line dual‐band implantable antenna, which was validated experimentally. The superstrate was made of the same material. Experiments were conducted on skin‐mimicking gel. The designed meander‐line antenna has a high peak gain of −21 dBi at 2.4 GHz, and its maximum specific absorption rate is compliant with IEEE safety standards.

Hyperthermia Efficacy of PEGylated-PLGA Coated Monodisperse Iron Oxide Nanoparticles

Magnetic nano hyperthermia (MNH) is a promising technique for the treatment of a variety of malignancies. This non-invasive technique employs magnetic nanoparticles and alternating magnetic fields to generate local heat at the tumor location, which activates cell death pathways. However, the efficacy of MNH is dependent on the physicochemical properties of the magnetic nanoparticles, such as size, size distribution, magnetic properties, biocompatibility, and dispersibility in the medium. In this study, it is aimed to evaluate the heating capacity of poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid)-poly (ethylene glycol) di-block copolymer (PLGA-b-PEG) coated monodisperse iron oxide nanoparticles (IONs) as an effective mediator for MNH application. For this purpose, monodisperse IONs with a narrow size distribution and a mean particle size of 8.6 nm have been synthesized via the thermal decomposition method. The resulting IONs were then coated with the PEGylated-PLGA polymer and homogeneously dispersed in the polymeric matrix, which had a clearly defined spherical shape. Additionally, the specific absorption rate (SAR), reflecting the amount of heat dissipation from the NPs to the surrounding medium, was calculated for different concentrations (10, 5, 2.5, and 1.25 mg/mL) of PEGylated-PLGA-IONs. At 5 mg/mL PEGylated-PLGA-IONs (125 μgFe/mL) were found to have a maximum SAR value of 313 W/g. In conclusion, the homogenous dispersion of IONs in PEGylated-PLGA matrix may be one of the critical parameters to enhance the SAR value for MNH-based cancer therapy.

Nonspecific eddy current heating in magnetic field hyperthermia

In this Perspective article, we explore the definition and use of clinical tolerability metrics associated with nonspecific eddy current heating in magnetic field hyperthermia (MFH). We revisit the origins of the “Brezovich criterion,” Hof ≤ 485 MA m−1s−1, as it is applied to axial time-varying magnetic fields H (t) = Ho sin(2πft) and the human torso. We then consider alternative metrics, including the “maximal specific absorption rate” (SARmax) of eddy-current-induced power absorbed per unit mass of tissue. With reference to previously published clinical data and the results of two volunteer studies in our laboratory, we show that the SARmax metric is both suitable and reliable. We also show how it may be extracted from in silico finite element models to cope with confounding effects such as anatomical hot spots and non-axial-field geometries. We note a parallel with a standardized metric, the “local SAR” used in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). We suggest that the limits established in clinical MRI (that the local SAR, averaged over 10 g of tissue and 6 min of treatment, should not exceed 20 mW g−1 in the torso or head, and 40 mW g−1 in the limbs) might be regarded as a good starting point for the design of MFH interventions. We conclude with the recommendation that the SARmax metric is adopted for future use in the development of clinically safe and tolerable MFH equipment.

Analyzing the SAR in Human Head Tissues under Different Exposure Scenarios

This paper deals with the assessment of induced specific absorption rate (SAR) in various human models under different exposure scenarios, including both laboratory measurements and simulations. Firstly, SAR values were measured in a standardized SAR laboratory using a phantom for two radiofrequency electromagnetic field (RF-EMF) sources at 900 MHz and 1800 MHz. These laboratory measurements served as a reference for SAR calculations conducted on a specific anthropomorphic mannequin (SAM) using a computer simulation technology (CST) program, thus enabling the determination of antenna location and excitation signal levels for further evaluation. Subsequently, simulations were carried out with CST to evaluate average SAR for the head and for specific head tissues such as the brain, muscles, and fat. Realistic computational human models were also used alongside SAM in CST to explore the influence of gender, age, and tissue type on SAR. Various power levels representing low, moderate, and high RF-EMF exposure were applied to the human models to compare against basic restrictions and reference levels. The simulation results indicate significantly higher SAR values calculated for 1800 MHz compared with 900 MHz. The ratio of the highest SAR values at 1800 MHz to 900 MHz is approximately 1.70 for a baby, 2.59 for a child, and 2.84 for both adult female and adult male. While the SAR values for the brain, fat, muscle, and head are comparable at 900 MHz for the baby, the brain’s SAR value at 1800 MHz stands out significantly from the other tissues. In contrast with the baby, the difference in SAR values between 900 MHz and 1800 MHz is more pronounced for the child, adult female and adult male. The lowest SAR values at 900 MHz and 1800 MHz were obtained for brain tissue in all human models, while the head has the highest SAR value. The maximum SAR change ratio between the brain and the head is calculated to be 4.44 for the male at 1800 MHz. The results reveal that, although the applied electromagnetic field levels were below reference levels for general public local exposure, some local SAR values exceeded the International Commission of Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection’s basic restriction for the general public at certain power levels, particularly at 1800 MHz. The SAR analysis derived from this study is significant in understanding the impact of wireless technologies on health, establishing safety standards, guiding technology advancement, conducting risk assessments, and increasing public awareness.

Electromagnetic field exposure to human head model with various metal objects at sub-6 GHz frequencies

ABSTRACT In recent years, the interactions of metal objects in human body with electromagnetic fields caused by devices working at fifth-generation (5G) frequencies have been studied by various researchers. A motivation behind this research was to evaluate the human body absorption of electromagnetic energy operating at sub-6 GHz 5G applications. According to this, the specific absorption rate (SAR) caused by new generation mobile phones was investigated in human heads wearing metal-framed spectacles and having metallic implants or earrings to analyse electromagnetic field exposure. A realistic human head model, including some metal objects, was numerically calculated, and analysed in terms of non-ionizing dosimetry. Simulations were carried out with the finite integration technique (FIT) based commercial software in the frequencies of 0.9, 1.8, 2.1, 2.45, 3.5 and 5 GHz, respectively. The maximum SAR of 14 × 10−5 W/kg for 10 g average tissue was calculated at 2.45 GHz frequency in the head model with earrings. The highest electric field strength of 0.52 V/m was observed at a 1.8 GHz frequency in the head model with all metal objects equipped. Results show that metal objects such as spectacles, dental implants and earrings can cause an increase in the SAR values for external biological tissues, and metal objects can behave as a kind of shield for deeper tissues. However, the obtained values are below the limits of international organisations.

A novel wideband fractal‐shaped MIMO antenna for brain and skin implantable biomedical applications

This antenna works in the 2.4–2.48 GHz band of industrial, scientific, and medical (ISM) standards. The fractal‐shaped wideband MIMO antenna is miniature in size with a footprint of . Rogers RT/Duroid 6010 high‐dielectric substrate material is used to fabricate the optimized design in order to validate the implantable MIMO antenna structure. The same high‐permittivity substrate material has been used as a superstrate. Experiments were carried out in brain and skin‐mimicking gel at 2.45 GHz in the ISM band. The proposed antenna has a peak gain of −21.3 dBi at 2.45 GHz. High isolation (&gt;20 dB) between two MIMO ports is attained. The proposed antenna achieves a fractional bandwidth of 36.76% and an impedance bandwidth of 1.02 GHz. According to IEEE safety regulations for 1‐ and 10‐g tissues, the computed maximum specific absorption rate (SAR) is safe bound.

Parachute shape ultra‐wideband wearable antenna for remote health care monitoring

SummaryWireless body area networks (WBAN) is used to measure patients' health conditions continuously. Different kinds of sensors are required to measure health conditions. When such types of antennas are used on the human body, they are flexible with the movements. The usage of wearable devices is currently increasing in the biomedical field. The presented wearable antenna is suitable for biomedical applications. The presented ultra‐wideband (UWB) flexible parachute shape wearable antenna is fabricated on a jeans textile substrate. The prototype antenna has a −10 dB measured impedance bandwidth of 5800 MHz (7 to 12.8 GHz) with average radiation efficiency of 75.28%. The prototype antenna's size is 40 × 40 mm2 (1.32 × 1.32 at centre frequency 9.9 GHz) and a peak gain of 4.5 dB at 12.33 GHz. The fabricated antenna is suitable for biomedical applications in X‐band frequencies and can be implemented with a low‐cost manufacturing process. The radiating element is made by conductive copper tape. Muscle‐equivalent phantoms are used to analyze the body effect on antenna performance. The radiation effect emitted by the presented antenna on the human body is calculated by the specific absorption rate (SAR) value. The maximum SAR value of the proposed antenna is 1.84 W/kg at 12.33 GHz. This leads to promising results for wearable applications related to remote health care monitoring, such as biotelemetry and mobile health with a sensor‐driven approach.

Radiofrequency antenna concepts for human cardiac MR at 14.0 T

ObjectiveTo examine the feasibility of human cardiac MR (CMR) at 14.0 T using high-density radiofrequency (RF) dipole transceiver arrays in conjunction with static and dynamic parallel transmission (pTx).Materials and methodsRF arrays comprised of self-grounded bow-tie (SGBT) antennas, bow-tie (BT) antennas, or fractionated dipole (FD) antennas were used in this simulation study. Static and dynamic pTx were applied to enhance transmission field (B1+) uniformity and efficiency in the heart of the human voxel model. B1+ distribution and maximum specific absorption rate averaged over 10 g tissue (SAR10g) were examined at 7.0 T and 14.0 T.ResultsAt 14.0 T static pTx revealed a minimum B1+ROI efficiency of 0.91 μT/√kW (SGBT), 0.73 μT/√kW (BT), and 0.56 μT/√kW (FD) and maximum SAR10g of 4.24 W/kg, 1.45 W/kg, and 2.04 W/kg. Dynamic pTx with 8 kT points indicate a balance between B1+ROI homogeneity (coefficient of variation < 14%) and efficiency (minimum B1+ROI > 1.11 µT/√kW) at 14.0 T with a maximum SAR10g < 5.25 W/kg.DiscussionMRI of the human heart at 14.0 T is feasible from an electrodynamic and theoretical standpoint, provided that multi-channel high-density antennas are arranged accordingly. These findings provide a technical foundation for further explorations into CMR at 14.0 T.

Theta band brainwaves in human resting EEG modulated by mobile phone radiofrequency

Purpose Wireless communication has become an integral part of our lives. The growing number of antennas in our environment and the expanding use of mobile phones (MPs) are increasing the population’s exposure to electromagnetic fields. The present study aimed to examine the potential impact of MPs radiofrequency electromagnetic fields (RF-EMF) exposure on the brainwaves of the resting electroencephalogram (EEG) in humans. Materials and Methods Twenty-one healthy volunteers were exposed to Global System for Mobile communications (GSM) signal at 900 MHz MP RF-EMF. The maximum specific absorption rate (SAR) of the MP averaged on 10 g tissue and 1 g tissue were measured at 0.49 W/kg, 0.70 W/kg, respectively. Results Results showed that while delta and beta rhythms of resting EEG were not affected, theta brainwaves were significantly modulated during exposure to RF-EMF related to MPs. For the first time, it was shown that this modulation is dependent on the eye condition, i.e. closed or open. Conclusions This study strongly suggests that acute exposure to RF-EMF alters the EEG theta rhythm at rest. Long-term exposure studies are required to explore the effect of this disruption in high-risk or sensitive populations.
