A self-adjusting polarization-agile patch antenna is presented. It allows us to track a linear polarization, if the received field is depolarized, to always obtain the maximum signal level. Two varactor diodes are connected to the patch to produce three states of linear polarization. The depolarization of the incident wave is used to produce the appropriate state of dc voltage biasing, using a conversion circuit of a microwave signal into a dc one, and then to control the independently biased varactors. Unlike a circular polarization antenna, this patch allows us to avoid a 3 dB loss of the received signal magnitude. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Microwave Opt Technol Lett 26: 260–262, 2000.
