Systematic Literature Review: Mathematical Literacy Skills in Terms of Mathematics Learning Motivation

Mathematical literacy and motivation to learn mathematics are two important aspects of education. Mathematical literacy enables students to understand and apply mathematical concepts in everyday life, as well as think logically and solve problems. Mathematics learning motivation influences students' effort and perseverance in learning the material, improving academic interest and performance. The combination of the two is essential for educational success and the development of critical thinking skills required in the modern world. The objectives of research generally cover the following aspects Measuring Mathematics Literacy Level, Assessing Mathematics Learning Motivation, Identifying the Relationship between Mathematics Literacy and Learning Motivation, Recognizing Barriers and Challenges, Developing Effective Learning Strategies. This research uses the SLR (Systematic Literature Review) method by reviewing 16 articles. Data collection in this study was carried out by reviewing all articles related to Mathematical Literacy Ability, Learning Motivation, Mathematical Literacy Ability in terms of Learning Motivation published from 2019 to 2023. Based on the results of the study, it was found that motivation to learn mathematics plays an important role in students' mathematical literacy skills. Students with low motivation tend to learn by force, so their mathematical literacy skills are low because they tend to do problems procedurally without in-depth analysis. The implication is the need for motivational strategies, curriculum design, teacher training, literacy programs, and parental involvement.

Investigation on Understanding the Numeracy Capacity of Intellectual Disabled Students using Enabling Technology Tools: Web Application, AR and UI/UX

The population of individuals with intellectual disabilities (ID) is increasing, necessitating assistance with a wide range of daily activities. Acquiring and assessing numeracy and communication skills are critical for this demographic, requiring tools and techniques tailored to their specific needs. Effective educational tools must employ multi-modal and multi-sensory approaches to cater to diverse learning styles and incorporate assistive technological solutions. Despite the availability of numerous tools, there is a need to enhance their utility and effectiveness. This study aims to identify and refine the requirements for an innovative educational tool that employs Two-dimensional (2D) and Augmented Reality (AR) technologies. To achieve this, we conducted semi-structured interviews and surveys with teachers working with students with ID, gaining insights into the current solutions, advantages, and limitations. Additionally, we used physical props as design probes in a co-design methodology to better understand and elicit the true needs of individuals with ID. The findings from this research will inform the development of a 2D/AR tool designed to make learning mathematics more engaging and effective for individuals with ID, contributing to the advancement of inclusive education practices. Enabling Technology plays a significant role in the numeracy ability among people with ID. Generative AI and Explainable AI shall further improve learning ability in the years to come.

Intelligent Tutoring Systems in Mathematics Education: A Systematic Literature Review Using the Substitution, Augmentation, Modification, Redefinition Model

Scholars have claimed that artificial intelligence can be used in education to transform learning. However, there is insufficient evidence on whether intelligent tutoring systems (ITSs), a representative form of artificial intelligence in education, has transformed the teaching and learning of mathematics. To fill this gap, this systematic review was conducted to examine empirical studies from 2003 to 2023 that used ITSs in mathematics education. Technology integration was coded using the substitution, augmentation, modification, redefinition (SAMR) model, which was extended to suit ITSs in a mathematics education context. How different contexts and teacher roles are intertwined with SAMR levels were examined. The results show that while ITSs in mathematics education primarily augmented existing learning, recent ITS studies have transformed students’ learning experiences. ITSs were most commonly applied at the elementary school level, and most ITS studies focused on the areas of number and arithmetic, algebra, and geometry. The level of SAMR varied depending on the research purpose, and ITS studies in mathematics education were mainly conducted in a way that minimized teacher intervention. The results of this study suggest that the affordance of an ITS, the educational context, and the teacher’s role should be considered simultaneously to demonstrate the transformative power of ITSs in mathematics education.

Investigating transgressive actions undertaken by students while studying mathematics via primary sources

We describe an exploration informed by transgressionism and supported by data collected from students’ report of learning abstract algebra via curriculum materials where primary historical sources are central to their design, namely Primary Source Projects (PSPs). PSPs require students to actively engage with primary source texts written by historical mathematicians and counter students’ more traditional mathematical learning experiences. We explore the components forming transgressive triads consisting of <i>outcomes</i> of <i>transgressive actions</i> taken to overcome <i>boundaries </i>encountered in students’ study of mathematics. Particularly, we focus on transgressive actions undertaken by students and provide exemplars identified from data to empirically support our theoretical conceptualisations. We end with a discussion by proposing research that draws upon transgressions in both learning mathematics via PHS in particular and with regard to other approaches in undergraduate mathematics education which may place students in contexts in which their familiar is made unfamiliar.

Application of interactive software in classrooms: a case of GeoGebra in learning geometry in secondary schools in Uganda

The incorporation of subject-specific technologies in teaching and learning mathematics has been extensively investigated in different areas outside Uganda. The benefits are extensive, although the adoption of these technologies has been threatened by teachers needing help to apply them effectively for instruction. While this alone would aptly justify a comprehensive assessment of its applicability on the local scene, the post-COVID-19 era dynamics escalated its urgency and relevance. Thus, third-year pre-service mathematics teachers’ knowledge and aptitude to use GeoGebra in teaching and learning geometry were developed in this study. In addition, the consequence of using this software on students’ achievement in geometry was investigated using a quantitative research approach. Ninety-four third-year pre-service mathematics teachers completed a three-week intensive capacity-building workshop using GeoGebra. Their self-ratings on their technological pedagogical content knowledge (TPACK) before and after the training were measured using a self-administered questionnaire. A total of 406 students from four schools in Central Uganda participated in the quasi-experiment, with 199 and 207 students assigned to the experimental and control groups, respectively. Pre- and post-achievement tests were meted out to the students. While descriptive statistics showed a positive change in the teachers’ technological knowledge (TK), technological pedagogical knowledge (TPK), technological content knowledge (TCK), and TPACK, independent samples t-tests revealed a substantial difference in the post-test mean scores between the two groups since the experimental group students outshone those in the control group. These findings are consistent with global literature, and thus, schools in Uganda should adopt the use of GeoGebra through a continuous capacity-building approach, while considering the challenges and limitations associated with the software.

UPAYA MENINGKATKAN KEMAMPUAN LITERASI NUMERASI PESERTA DIDIK KELAS V DENGAN PEMBELAJARAN PROBLEM BASED LEARNING DI SD NEGERI TUNJUNGSEKAR 1

The development of the current digital era makes literacy and numeracy of human resources a competency that needs to be mastered. However, the level of literacy in Indonesia is still below average. This is shown by the evidence that most students from class V SD Tunjungsekar 1 did not succeed in achieving the minimum score that has been set, especially in learning mathematics. Therefore, researchers applied PBL (Problem Based Learning) to improve numeracy literacy skills, especially for fifth grade students of SD Tunjungsekar 1. This study used qualitative and quantitative methods. The process of obtaining data is done through observation and interviews that produce numerical data which is analysed to conclude the results of the study. The implementation of this study showed success as evidenced by the increase in the scores of grade V students after the PBL learning method so that it can be concluded that Problem Based Learning applied by researchers succeeded in improving the literacy skills of grade V students of SD Tunjungsekar 1

Penerapan Model Reciprocal Teaching untuk Meningkatkan Hasil Belajar Matematika Siswa Kelas V SD Negeri 016 Rambah Samo

This research is classroom action research (PTK) which aims to improve student learning outcomes through the application of the reciprocal teaching model in mathematics learning. Data collection techniques are carried out in the form of student activity observation sheets, teacher activity observation sheets and test questions. The results of this research show that in cycle I and cycle II there was an increase. The learning outcomes in cycle I, meeting I, had an average score obtained by students, namely 54.12, then in cycle I, meeting II, the average score obtained by students was 65.88. Then in cycle II, at meeting I, the average score obtained by students was 71.18, and at meeting II, the average score for students was 85.88. Besides increasing student learning outcomes, student observation sheets also increased. In cycle I, meeting I, student observations were 50%, then in cycle I, meeting II, it increased to 60%. In cycle II, meeting I, the student's ability still increased to 80%, and in cycle II, meeting II, it increased to 90%. Based on the results of the research that has been carried out, it can be concluded that the application of the reciprocal teaching model can improve student mathematics learning outcomes for class V students at SD Negeri 016 Rambah Samo

Penggunaan Media Papan Pintar untuk Meningkatkan Hasil Belajar Siswa Kelas 3 pada Materi Bilangan Cacah di SDN 1 Babakan

This research was motivated by the low learning outcomes of Mathematics in addition and subtraction materials in grade 3B students at SDN 1 Babakan. This shows that the Minimum Completeness Criteria (KKM) set by the school, which is 70, has not been achieved. The purpose of this study is to determine the improvement of Mathematics learning outcomes of addition and subtraction materials using smart board learning media. This study uses the Classroom Action Research (PTK) method based on the theory developed by Kemmis and McTaggart which includes the process of planning, action, observation, and reflection. The research was carried out in class 3B of SDN 1 Babakan, Sumber District, Cirebon Regency with a total of 29 students (14 women and 15 boys). Data collection techniques are carried out through observation and tests. Data analysis was carried out descriptively on all research data. The results of the study show that student learning outcomes in learning have improved. In the first cycle, student learning outcomes reached 62% and in the second cycle, student learning outcomes reached 83%. The conclusion that can be drawn from this study is that the use of Smart Board Media can improve student learning outcomes in Mathematics learning in grade III of SDN 1 Babakan

Development of mathematical competence of 5–6-year-old children in Polish preschool education institutions

ABSTRACT This study addresses the topic of developing mathematical competence of children aged 5–6 years old in Polish preschools. A survey was conducted to examine the methods employed in the mathematical education of preschool children, the effectiveness of these methods, and the relationship between the development of mathematical competence of preschool children and their overall growth and development. The responses from the survey of teachers of pre-school education and parents were analysed to determine whether the mathematical competence of older preschool children is adequately shaped in accordance with their developmental possibilities and whether the mathematical education provided in kindergarten sufficiently prepares children to start learning mathematics in the ‘school way’.

Enhancing mathematics learning with 3D augmented reality escape room

Learning mathematics is a challenge for many students, especially because of the traditionalist method with which its contents are taught. To a large extent, mathematics classes generate little motivation in students, so in this research, a novel technological method based on augmented reality is applied to improve the mathematics learning process, particularly the techniques of solving systems of linear equations. The research design used was a two-phase mixed sequential confirmatory type. The research worked with a sample of 65 students (Mage=17.72, SD=0.65; 58.5% female and 41.5% male). In the first phase, a quasi-experimental study was designed with an experimental group (M=32) and a control group (M=33). The experimental group received a mathematics teaching and learning intervention based on augmented reality vs. the control group, which received a traditional educational process. The experimental group showed improvements in acquired knowledge and motivation compared to the control group students. In the qualitative phase, two focus groups were conducted with students from their respective groups. In the experimental group, the following categories were identified: interesting, fun, innovative, and entertaining. The control group identified the following categories: little attention, low interest in learning, tired knowledge, and lack of motivation. The results are discussed in relation to the need to generate educational processes that benefit mathematics learning.

PYTHON IN ORDINARY DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS LEARNING

Using software in mathematics learning can improve students' soft and hard mathematics skills at the high school and college levels. Therefore, using software in the learning process is important, including in learning Differential Equations. This research examines the use of the Python programming language with Jupyter Lab software and the SymPy library in solving ordinary differential equation problems symbolically in the Differential Equations course. The use of the Python programming language in Differential Equations learning includes solving linear ordinary differential equations of first-order, second-order, higher-order, and the Laplace transform. This research also examines the effect of using Python on the learning outcomes of differential equations of Mathematics Education Study Program students, Study Program Outside the Main Campus, Pattimura University. The population in this quantitative research is all students who programmed differential equations courses in the even semester of the 2023-2024 academic year as many as 19 students. The Python programming language can be used to solve differential equation problems symbolically easily, quickly, and accurately. In addition, using Jupyter Lab makes the process of solving differential equation problems easier and more interactive. Furthermore, t-test results show that the use of Python in learning differential equations can improve students' learning activities and learning outcomes. Using the Python programming language with Jupyter Lab software and the SymPy library can be developed to create teaching materials, textbooks, and reference books for Differential Equations courses.

Mathematical skills classification through primary education

By the end of primary school, children are expected to acquire a range of mathematical skills that progressively develop. This study aimed to gain insight into how a large number of numerical and geometrical measures are grouped and whether the structures shift or remain invariant along child’s development based on the data obtained from a sample of 1346 s to sixth grade children. On the basis of correlation analyses and exploratory factor analyses, we came up with an invariant four-factor structure for each grade. The four factors obtained were the following: (a) early and retrieval skills (subitizing, enumeration, number facts) (b) transcoding and ordinality skills, (c) numerical advanced skills and (d) visual-spatial advanced skills. Confirmatory factor analyses showed that the four-factor model fits well to the data (RMSEA < 0.06, CFI > 0.95, GFI > 0.93, SRMR < 0.05) at all grades. The associations between the mathematical measures were captured in each factor and the revealed invariant structure is discussed and compared with previous classification models of mathematical skills. Given that the difficulties in learning mathematics is currently being viewed as a continuum of academic abilities instead of a distinct problem, the underlying invariant four-factor structure can facilitate experts and educators to better understand how a broad area of mathematical skills are related across the primary education, in order to carry our comprehensive assessment of both the mathematical strengths and weaknesses of their students and to apply the appropriate customized teaching strategies.

Best Practice STEM-Based Differentiated Mathematics Learning for Improving Learning Outcomes and Self-efficacy of High School Students

Learning outcomes and self-efficacy are important learning factors. Mathematics learning outcomes can reflect the extent to which students have developed as learners, while self-efficacy reflects students' self-confidence in their own abilities in solving mathematical problems. This study was based on a qualitative approach, best practice. This best practice uses the STAR flow (“Situasi, Tantangan, Aksi, Refleksi”). The situation at SMAN 1 Mande, especially class XI, shows low learning outcomes and lack of self-efficacy. The challenge faced is planning and implementing differentiated learning to improve learning outcomes and student self-efficacy. Through a STEM-based differentiated learning approach, researchers designed and implemented contextual learning on the theme of global warming with integrating science, technology, engineering and mathematics. The results of this best practice indicate an increase in learning outcomes and student self-efficacy. STEM-based differentiated learning can also improve understanding of mathematical concepts at the high school level. Researcher recommend that educators embrace differentiated learning strategies by customizing their approaches to accommodate the diverse needs such as students' level of readiness, interests, and student’s learning profile. The significance of comprehending student characteristics, such as learning styles and thinking abilities is paramount, especially in the implementation of student-centered learning. Additionally, educators are advised to prioritize aligning learning objectives with the curriculum, ensuring relevance and engagement. This various approach aims to create a dynamic learning environment to resonates with students individualized level. Develop interventions to address students' lack of confidence in solving mathematical problems can improve self efficacy.

The Effect of Habits of Mindo n Junior High School Students’ Mathematics Communication Ability

This research aims to determine the effect of habits of mind on junior high school students' mathematical communication skills on triangles and quadrilaterals. Habits of Mind is defined as a habit of thinking that is carried out as an intelligent behavior pattern when faced with a problem whose solution isn’t easily known so that productive action occurs. The problem in this research is motivated by its importance habits of mind in learning mathematics and improving students' mathematical abilities. The method used in this research is method ex post facto. The population in this study were all class VIII students in one of Junior High Schools in Karawang Regency. The sample in this study was 42 students using the technique purposive sampling. The instrument used in this research is a test, namely mathematical communication skills which consists of 5 (five) description questions. Apart from that, it also uses non-test instruments in the form of questionnaires habits of mind which consists of 30 statements. Data analysis was carried out using simple linear regression techniques. The research results obtained a linear regression equation Y = -25.065 + 1.345X. The magnitude of the correlation coefficient r2 = 0.848 and coefficient of determination = 84.8%. This shows that there is habits of mind had an influence on students' mathematical communication skills of 84.8%, while 15.6% was influenced by other factors not measured in this research.

The Development of Liveworksheets-Assisted Discovery Learning Model Worksheets for Improving Student’s Critical Thinking Ability

Student Worksheets (LKS) are an interactive bridge between teachers and students, this is also related to measuring student learning outcomes. The use of worksheets affects the level of effectiveness in working on test questions. Stimulating students' cognitive critical thinking can be obtained, including from learning mathematics with the right approach method. One of the students' learning goals is to be innovative and creative in solving problems with solutions. The aim of this research is to develop a LKPD (Learner Worksheet) model of discovery learning assisted by a live worksheet to make it more effective and efficient and have the potential impact of growing students' cognitive level of critical thinking. The research method used is a design research model which is divided into two parts, namely preliminary (preliminary study and LKPD-Liveworksheet design) and formative evaluation including self-evaluation, prototyping (expert review, one-to-one, and small groups) research field tests as well revision. Research data was analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively. The research results show students' critical thinking abilities for Liveworksheet LKPD teaching materials with exponents and logarithms in the "Legal" and "Easy" categories according to experts and practitioners. The results of the research show that the LKPD developed is feasible, effective and influences students' critical thinking skills using the discovery learning model. The activities in this research have resulted in a product being developed in the form of a critical thinking worksheet using a discovery learning model assisted by a live worksheet which creates productive learning.

Correlation between Students’ Critical Thinking Ability and Self-Confidence on Junior High School

One way to improve students' affective and cognitive aspects is through a mathematics learning approach method at school. Achievement of learning objectives (CPL) is demonstrated by the extent to which students have achieved learning objective competencies through a series of criteria or indicators that can be seen from student achievement or learning outcomes. The method in this research uses a non-experimental correlational quantitative research method carried out on class VII students at one of the MTS in Soreang, Kab. Bandung. The aim of this research is to get an idea of how self-confidence influences critical thinking skills or the relationship between critical thinking skills and self-confidence. The results of this research show that the correlation between students' critical thinking skills and self-confidence has a "strong" influence on each other. The conclusion of this research is that Ho is rejected so that Hα is accepted: There is an influence between self-confidence and critical thinking on student achievement or learning outcomes, this means that students' self-confidence and critical thinking greatly influence learning outcomes with the regression model obtained Y = 32.788 + 0.399X1 + 0.391X2 Positive correlation occurs when the two variables are related to the same status (the linear regression coefficient has a positive sign). If one variable increases, the other variable also increases, and vice versa if it decreases.

Analyzing Junior High School Students’ Mathematical Communication Ability and Self Esteem using Discovery Learning Model

Mathematical reasoning, mathematical communication, mathematical problem solving, conceptual understanding, mathematical understanding, creative thinking and critical thinking are part of the mathematical abilities that students must have. One of the goals of learning mathematics according to NCTM is learning to communicate (mathematical communication). Mathematical communication skills in mathematics learning really need to be developed. This type of research design uses a quasi-experimental research design, namely pretest and post-test with non-equivalent control group design . The research used research subjects into two groups, namely the experimental group and the control group. The subjects of this research were students of class VII I MTs As-Sa'adah Padahanten Majalengka, numbering 64 people. Subjects were selected based on experimental class VIII A, 32 people and control class VIIIB, 32 people. Walkthroughs, questionnaires, and tests are techniques used in data collection. Data processing analysis was carried out qualitatively and quantitatively. The results of this research are that there is a difference in the effectiveness of the Discovery Learning model learning approach with the ordinary (conventional) learning model in terms of the aspects of mathematical communication skills and self-esteem of MTs in statistics material. The implications of the Discovery Learning learning model in this research are that it makes it easy for students to remember the lessons learned, integrate self concept according to their initial abilities, focus, be creative in exploratory projects, and the effect of knowledge transfer on learning outcomes can last a long time.

REVISÃO SISTEMÁTICA DE LITERATURA

This text aims to address the topic of the Systematic Literature Review (RSL), and its application to the teaching and learning of mathematics in the initial grades of elementary school. The aim is to establish a line of guidance that makes it possible to particularize and direct the child’s knowledge, in such a way that facilitates their learning, highlighting research on themes that deal with the interpretation of texts, both in reading and writing statements and mathematical problems, within the native language.

Gestures can help children learn mathematics: how researchers can work with teachers to make gesture studies applicable to classrooms.

The gestures we produce serve a variety of functions-they affect our communication, guide our attention and help us think and change the way we think. Gestures can consequently also help us learn, generalize what we learn and retain that knowledge over time. The effects of gesture-based instruction in mathematics have been well studied. However, few of these studies are directly applicable to classroom environments. Here, we review literature that highlights the benefits of producing and observing gestures when teaching and learning mathematics, and we provide suggestions for designing research studies with an eye towards how gestures can feasibly be applied to classroom learning.
