Fabrication of Magnetic Carbon Nanotubes Using a Metal‐Impregnated Polymer Precursor

γ‐Fe2O3‐impregnated magnetic carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have been fabricated by the carbonization of polypyrrole (PPy) nanotubes. It is found that PPy nanotubes form graphitic structures at a low temperature (800 °C). Magnetic CNTs (see Figure) show ferromagnetic behavior even at 300 K and the main magnetic phase of the CNTs is γ‐Fe2O3. This novel fabrication approach is expected to provide an alternative way to fabricate CNTs.

Spin Electronics: From Concentrated to Diluted Magnetic Semiconductors and Beyond

This presentation will review physical properties, relevant to spintronics, of concentrated magnetic semiconductors. Examples from the open literature and current research utilizing thin film EuS will be used as illustrations. New research on potential spin injection materials and spin detection will also be described. This latter work, carried out at MARTECH, the Center for Materials Research and Technology, demonstrates that carriers from the half-metal CrO2 may be injected across an insulator without loss of (∼100%) spin polarization. It also features the development of a Hall gradiometer capable of detecting as few as 105 spins.

The Structures and Materials Research Center of the National Aerospace Laboratory of Japan (NAL) and Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd. (KHI) conducted the 2nd vertical drop test of a fuselage section cut from a NAMC YS-11 transport airplane in July 2002. The main objective of this test program was to obtain background data for aircraft cabin safety by drop test of a full-scale fuselage section and to develop computational tool for crash simulation of aircraft fuselage structure. The test article including seats and anthropomorphic test dummies was dropped to a rigid impact surface by free-fall method at a velocity of 7.6m/s (25ft/s). The impact environment and the resultant response of the fuselage structure and the passenger dummies were considered to be severe but potentially survivable. A description of the results of the 1st drop test and the 2nd drop test is presented in this paper.

The test condition and result were considered to be severe but potentially survivable. A finite element model of this test article was also developed using the explicit nonlinear transient-dynamic analysis code, LS-DYNA3D. An outline of analytical method and comparison of analysis result with drop test data are presented in this paper.

Rapid prototyping of scaffolds derived from thermoreversible hydrogels and tailored for applications in tissue engineering

In the year 2000 a new rapid prototyping (RP) technology was developed at the Freiburg Materials Research Center to meet the demands for desktop fabrication of scaffolds useful in tissue engineering. A key feature of this RP technology is the three-dimensional (3D) dispensing of liquids and pastes in liquid media. In contrast to conventional RP systems, mainly focused on melt processing, the 3D dispensing RP process (3D plotting) can apply a much larger variety of synthetic as well as natural materials, including aqueous solutions and pastes, to fabricate scaffolds for application in tissue engineering. For the first time, hydrogel scaffolds with a designed external shape and a well-defined internal pore structure were prepared by this RP process. Surface coating and pore formation were achieved to facilitate cell adhesion and cell growth. The versatile application potential of new hydrogel scaffolds was demonstrated in cell culture.

PUI/MRSEC Collaboration to Create Opportunities for Women in Materials-Research

ABSTRACTThis three-year collaboration between a predominately undergraduate women's college (Simmons College) and a NSF-supported Materials Research Science and Engineering Center (the Cornell Center for Materials Research (CCMR)) focuses on establishing a collaborative Simmons/Cornell research program that provides opportunities for students to work with faculty on timely research projects, have access to sophisticated instrumentation, and gain related work experience in industrial settings. To interest women in participating in materials-related research and to encourage them to consider further career exploration in this area, the secondary goal of the project focuses on augmenting women's undergraduate experience. In this regard, the project uses the PUI/MRSEC collaboration to enhance the undergraduate curriculum at Simmons and encourage new Ph.D.s in materials-related disciplines at Cornell to consider academic careers at Primarily Undergraduate Institutions (PUIs).To provide opportunities for students to work on research throughout their undergraduate careers, this program focuses on studying the degradation processes in organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs). These materials are currently of great interest for display applications, and an understanding and control of the degradation processes could ultimately influence their use in various types of consumer products.To widen science students' exposure to materials science, a new minor in materials was developed and materials science topics are being incorporated into physics and chemistry courses. To encourage students to consider graduate or industrial careers in materials science and to ease the transition into these large research environments, CCMR will place students in summer industrial jobs and REU positions. To provide students with further access to sophisticated instrumentation, a portion of the laboratory requirement for the new minor in materials will be co-taught during the summer by Simmons and Cornell collaborators at CCMR's Shared Experimental Facilities. Cornell's graduate students will participate in the program as mentors for Simmons undergraduates and will visit Simmons to better understand postgraduate teaching careers at PUIs.

Current-Induced Degradation in Polythiophene

ABSTRACTThe three-year collaboration between Simmons College and the Cornell Center for Materials Research (CCMR) is focused on undergraduate student/faculty research in organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs). The physics of OLED devices is characterized by three major processes: charge injection, charge transfer, and light emission as a result of the electron-hole recombination. In the first year of the program our research has been related to the first two stages.OLEDs based on small molecule as well as polymeric layers have been investigated. The devices were prepared using mostly aluminum (also nickel and iron) as electrodes and PC:TPD or polythiophene as the organic layer. Electrodes of about 20 nm were formed by vacuum evaporation, and organic layers of approximately 100–200 nm were spin-coated. The current-voltage characteristics, measured under forward and reverse bias up to 10 volts, demonstrate typical semiconductor S-shape behavior, and show variations dependent on aging, thickness of the polymer layer, and type and combination of electrodes.The results presented here specifically track the degradation of devices using polythiophene sandwiched between aluminum electrodes. The I-V curves and successive current response as a function of time and under constant voltage drive are presented along with complementary mass spectra and UV-visible and infrared absorption spectra. These measurements along with preliminary computer modeling of HOMO and LUMO energies for a series of thiophene oligomers suggest a correlation between internal changes in the polymer and variations in the electrical characteristics of the devices.

Fabrication of soft tissue engineering scaffolds by means of rapid prototyping techniques

Scaffolds are of great importance for tissue engineering because they enable the production of functional living implants out of cells obtained from cell culture. These scaffolds require individual external shape and well defined internal structure with interconnected porosity. The problem of the fabrication of prototypes from computer assisted design (CAD) data is well known in automotive industry. Rapid prototyping (RP) techniques are able to produce such parts. Some RP techniques exist for hard tissue implants. Soft tissue scaffolds need a hydrogel material. No biofunctional and cell compatible processing for hydrogels exists in the area of RP. Therefore, a new rapid prototyping (RP) technology was developed at the Freiburg Materials Research Center to meet the demands for desktop fabrication of hydrogels. A key feature of this RP technology is the three-dimensional dispensing of liquids and pastes in liquid media. The porosity of the scaffold is calculated and an example of the data conversion from a volume model to the plotting path control is demonstrated. The versatile applications of the new hydrogel scaffolds are discussed, including especially its potential for tissue engineering.

Steric Turnoff of Vibrationally Mediated Negative Differential Resistance in a Single Molecule.

Negative differential resistance (NDR), mediated by vibrational excitation, is strongly dependent on molecular structure and dynamics, according to scanning tunneling microscopy on Cu(001)-bound pyrrolidine and N-methylpyrrolidine at 9 K. Tunneling electrons cause the former to switch between conformations I and II, so that NDR is observed. The methyl group of of the latter compound restricts it to a single conformation, and a linear current-voltage characteristic results.

Mitigation of Alkali-Silica Reactivity in New Mexico

The research experiments reported were conducted at the Materials Research Center, ATR Institute, University of New Mexico, at the request of the Research Bureau, New Mexico State Highway and Transportation Department (NMSHTD). The purpose was to determine the amount of additives required for mitigation of alkali-silica reactivity (ASR) based on screening tests. Fly ash additives routinely used in New Mexico and a new material—lithium nitrate—proposed by the Strategic Highway Research Program were evaluated. The work was motivated by continuous problems with early deterioration of concrete structures due to alkali-silica reactivity. The work was based on the use of acceptance criteria established by NMSHTD for expansion due to ASR, as measured in screening tests. Recommendations resulting from this research do not consider all aspects of the behavior of concrete mixtures and structures. The additive recommendations are based on reduction in mortar-bar expansion during accelerated tests.

In order to develop stable composite materials in an air atmosphere above 1773 K, unidirectionally solidified Al2O3/Er3Al5O12 eutectic composites were fabricated by using the Bridgman-type equipment at the Japan Ultra-high Temperature Materials Research Center. Composites with dimensions of 40 mm in diameter by 70 mm in length consisted of single-crystal-like Al2O3 and single-crystal Er3Al5O12 without colonies or pores. The flexural strength of the composite is temperature independent from room temperature up to 2073 K (just below its melting point of about 2130 K). It was found also that the microstructure of the present composite has excellent thermal stability at 1973 K in an air atmosphere. The above superior high-temperature characteristics are due to a microstructure consisting of three-dimensionally continuous and complexly entangled single-crystal-like Al2O3 and single-crystal Er3Al5O12 phases, the formation of interfaces with no amorphous phases and comparatively good coherence.
