Preparation of geopolymer for in-situ pavement construction on the moon utilizing minimal additives and human urine in lunar regolith simulant

Constructing lunar pavements is of great significance for improving the transportation efficiency of materials and personnel transfer at lunar bases. Utilizing lunar regolith for the in-situ preparation of geopolymer is an effective means of supplying raw materials for lunar pavement construction. This present study prepared geopolymers for pavement material with lunar regolith simulant. The influence of NaOH on the compressive strength of geopolymers was understood by using different percentages of NaOH as alkaline activator. The effect of urine on the compressive strength of geopolymers by using artificial urine of different pH values as liquid phases. The results indicated that the addition of artificial urine slightly reduces the compressive strength of geopolymers, and the effects of pH and NaOH percentage are different. Microstructural analysis performed by Mercury Intrusion Porosimetry and Scanning Electron Microscope, indicated that choosing fine-particle lunar regolith simulant as precursor is more conducive to the preparation of high-strength geopolymers using human urine.

Effects of oil palm mesocarp fibers on the physical and mechanical properties of expansive soils

Palm fiber is one of the favorable materials used in stabilization of soft soil in geotechnical engineering projects, nowadays due to its sustainability, less damage of environment, biodegradability, availability and cost-effectiveness in a context of widespread appeal to the world for return to nature by protecting the earth. On the other hand, expansive soils are renowned for their swelling-shrinkage property and these volumetric changes resultantly cause huge damage to civil infrastructures. Likewise, subgrades consisting of expansive soils instigate serviceability failures in pavements across various regions worldwide. This paper presents results of the laboratory evaluation of expansive soils stabilized with oil palm mesocarp fiber (OPMF), with a view to determine its suitability as flexible pavement construction material. The mixtures were subjected to British Standard heavy (modified Proctor) compaction energy to determine their strength characteristics. The samples were subjected to different tests to ascertain their index properties. Varying proportions of OPMF from 1% to 4% were incorporated into the soil samples and the effects were observed based on compaction and California Bearing Ratio (CBR) results. The control samples without inclusion of OPMF achieved the highest Maximum Dry Densities (MDD), the MDDs reduced linearly as the OPMF content increased. Consequently, the CBR values decreased with increase in OPMF. The reduction in MDD ranged from 20.28g/cm3, 18.5 g/cm3, 15.65 g/cm3, 12.53 g/cm3 as the OPMF increased from 1%, 2% to 3%, 4%. and the optimum moisture content remained almost unaffected due to high-absorbent nature of the fibers. With the inclusion of the OPMF, the CBR value under soaked conditions dropped from 5% to 1.8% rendering them very unsuitable for pavement subgrade. It was concluded that the presence of fiber depreciated the engineering properties of the earth materials. Direct application of OPMF in any part of road pavement has been dissuaded.

Evaluating the effect of paper waste lignin in hot mix asphalt

Asphalt is a viscoelastic material which performs to resist rutting, fatigue cracking, and moisture susceptibility under different loading and temperature conditions. The use of innovative and renewable pavement construction materials is inevitable due to high axle loads, rapidly increasing traffic volumes, and varying climatic conditions. This study aims to assess the effect as well as the optimum dosage of paper waste lignin for use in hot mix asphalt (HMA). Lignin from the paper industry with dosage ratios of 5, 10, 15, and 20%, was utilized to study the effect of the addition of lignin to the asphalt binder. Virgin and lignin-modified binder samples, before and after the aging process, were subjected to physical testing through penetration, softening point, ductility, viscosity and specific gravity and rheological characteristics through dynamic shear rheometer (DSR), bending beam rheometer (BBR), and rational viscometer (RV). The fractional composition was assessed through saturates, aromatics, resins and asphaltenes (SARA) fractional composition technique. Statistical analysis was also performed to find correlation of different physical and rheological parameters. Furthermore, based on optimum dosage, the performance of asphalt mixtures was studied against rutting, fatigue cracking, and moisture susceptibility. The results indicated that the addition of lignin has improved the physical properties significantly. The amount of asphaltene decreased and aromatics increased in SARA fractional analysis. Moreover, the Colloidal Instability Index (CII) has also indicated a stable structure of the binder. The rheological characteristics are improved after modification. The asphalt mixture tests revealed that addition of lignin with optimum dosage (10%) has improved the performance against rutting, fatigue cracking and moisture susceptibility. Statistical analysis indicated good co-relation among different physical and rheological parameters. This study concludes that 10% dosage is the optimum dosage that can successfully replace the virgin asphalt binder for performance of hot mix asphalt.

Performance evaluation of recycled concrete aggregates with geosynthetics as an alternative subbase course material in pavement construction

This study investigates the feasibility of using recycled concrete aggregates (RCA) as subbase materials in roads through laboratory experiments. Various physical tests were conducted on the soil subgrade and RCA subbase, followed by cyclic plate load tests to assess the impact of geosynthetic reinforcement on the bearing capacity of RCA materials. The ultimate bearing capacities of different RCA configurations ranged from 186 to 480 kPa, similar to previous studies on natural and recycled aggregates. The geocell-reinforced section exhibited excellent performance, with a measured ultimate bearing capacity of 480 kPa. The Geocell-Geogrid and Geocell-Geotextile sections showed the highest bearing capacity ratios at 2.58 each, indicating superior performance. Reinforced RCA infills demonstrated improved settlement values under repeated loading, with the geocell-geogrid section effectively reducing permanent settlement. The study concludes that RCA can be a substitute for natural aggregates in road subbase materials, mitigating the environmental impact of construction and demolition waste.

Life cycle assessment and pavement performance of recycled aggregates in road construction

Integrating environmental goals in the construction of infrastructure has attracted great attention over the past two decades. The use of construction and demolished waste materials (C&D) as a base layer for pavement structures gained popularity as a sustainable alternative to virgin aggregates (VA). An experimental testing program was designed to investigate several recycled materials as a potential replacement to VA in flexible pavements base layer. The testing program included routine tests, matric suction, static, and repeated load triaxial tests to measure the general engineering properties and evaluate the material performance under static and cyclic loading. The results of the laboratory testing program were employed to predict the pavement performance utilizing different combinations of C&D waste as a base layer for flexible pavement structures using the AASHTOWare Pavement ME Design at different climate conditions. The sustainability of using C&D material as a partial or full replacement of VA base material in pavement construction was evaluated by using the life cycle assessment (LCA) approach. The results showed that all the C&D materials yielded a much thinner base layer compared to the natural VA achieving the same pavement performance. Moreover, the reduction in the thickness is more significant in cold and wet climatic conditions rather than the hot and dry climatic conditions. LCA results revealed that the VA base layer had the highest environmental impact on all tested categories. VA materials, used as a base layer, show 65% higher global warming potential compared to C&D materials as a base layer in all climatic conditions.

The effect of paving block from plastic waste material in the urban drainage: Study case in residential areas

Large expanses of green, open land are frequently converted as a result of population growth and quick development. This phenomenon causes the decreasing of water infiltration area which has an impact on increasing runoff coefficient. In the urban drainage problem, paving blocks are often used as road pavement construction materials to reduce surface runoff. The aim of this research is to study the characteristic of flow in the paving block made from plastic waste material. The research conducted in the laboratory testing utilizing a rainfall simulator by several variations in slope of 0% to 15%. The findings indicate that paving blocks made from plastic waste have less runoff coefficient than asphalt and/or concrete pavement. There is a correlation between the slope of the land and the runoff coefficient value which the runoff coefficient value increasing as the slope of the land increases. That finding is then applied in urban drainage problem located in the Cipamokolan Village region in Bandung City with the help of SWMM program for drainage calculation. As a result, the runoff discharge is decreasing by implementing the paving block made from plastic waste.

USE OF STEEL FIBER AND COPPER SLAG IN CONCRETE PAVEMENT

This study explores the utilization of steel fiber as a reinforcement material in concrete pavement construction. The investigation delves into the mechanical and structural properties of steel fiber-reinforced concrete (SFRC) and its impact on the performance of pavement structures. Various proportions of steel fibers are incorporated into the concrete mix, and the resulting mixtures are subjected to comprehensive testing, including compressive strength, flexural strength, and fatigue resistance. The study aims to assess the potential enhancement in the durability and load-bearing capacity of concrete pavements through the incorporation of steel fibers. The findings indicate that the addition of steel fibers contributes to increased tensile strength and crack resistance, addressing common issues such as reflective cracking and fatigue failure in concrete pavements. Moreover, the study investigates the economic viability and sustainability aspects associated with the use of steel fiber in concrete pavements, considering its influence on lifecycle costs and environmental impact. The outcomes provide valuable insights for engineers and practitioners seeking optimized solutions for durable and resilient concrete pavement construction. Field Studies on Expansive Soil Stabilization with Nanomaterials and Lime for Flexible Pavement

The long-term performance of pavement is greatly influenced by the subgrade soil-bearing capacity. The areas with lower bearing capability experience higher construction costs due to soil replacement. Soil stabilization is one of the engineering measures that may be used to improve soil properties. The improvement in the soil properties varies depending on the soil type and type and dosage of the stabilizer. The primary objective of this study is to determine the impact of the different types of stabilizers on different types of black cotton soil. In the present study, black cotton soil was treated with Terrasil (0.5, 0.75, and 1 kg/m3), Zycobond (0.5, 0.75, and 1 kg/m3), and lime (0, 2, and 3%). The influence of varying dosages of Terrasil, Zycobond, and lime showed a significant improvement in the FSI, CBR, and UCS. In this study, attempts were made to investigate the field performance of chemically treated black cotton soil. A 100 m trail section with chemical- and lime-treated subgrade was constructed and analyzed using the dynamic cone penetration test. Finally, the mechanical design indicated that the chemical stabilization layer could be helpful to reduce asphalt layer thickness by 30 mm and cost. It is anticipated that this study will be useful to perceive, visualize, and understand the advantages of chemically treated black cotton soil. Overall, it is a step toward sustainable construction, which will reduce the demand for natural materials by optimizing pavement design and the use of existing unsuitable materials (black cotton soil) in flexible pavement construction.

Exploratory Field and Laboratory Investigation on the Use of Noncontact Digital Ski Sensor in the South Korea Expressway Network

In the case of asphalt pavement construction, better smoothing and reliable material performance acquisition are essential. In South Korea, the next-generation asphalt pavement-smoothing technology, known as the noncontact digital ski (NCDS), started to be used in expressway construction in 2018, making this system an essential tool in the paving industry. The present work thoroughly assessed how employing the NCDS system affected the response of the pavement material at low temperatures. Portions of paved roads with and without NCDS were assessed for the international roughness index (IRI, m/km). The development of thermal stress propagation was then examined using the bending beam rheometer on asphalt samples from the road. Based on straightforward visual and statistical analysis, it was discovered that using NCDS produces significantly lower IRI and reduced thermal stress, which raises the possibility that using NCDS has the potential for better low-temperatures predictions.

Investigation of the Fatigue Performance of Sustainable Asphalt Pavement

Selecting suitable materials for sustainable asphalt pavement construction can be a challenging task, particularly due to the significant issue of fatigue damage in flexible pavement. The fatigue performance of gap-graded asphalt mixes (GGCP) was assessed through four-point bending beam fatigue testing, examining the impact of incorporating 6% Calcium carbonate (CaCO3) and 2% treated palm oil fuel ash (TPOFA) on fatigue cracking. The testing was conducted at various stress levels (800, 1000, and 1200 kPa) and a temperature of 5°C. Additionally, the asphalt mixtures underwent acceleration ageing and moisture conditions, which varied during the study. The experimental findings indicated that higher stress levels resulted in a decrease in the fatigue life of asphalt mixtures due to ageing effects. Moreover, moisture conditioning was found to diminish the fatigue life of the asphalt mixture. Comparatively, the fatigue model incorporating a plateau value and fatigue life demonstrated greater accuracy when compared to previous regression models.

A Review on Life Cycle Assessment of Pavements in Brazil: Evaluating Environmental Impacts and Pavement Performance Integrating the International Roughness Index

This article addresses the limited understanding of the landscape regarding Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) in Brazilian pavement infrastructure. It provides an overview of LCA’s application in assessing the environmental effects of pavements while exploring the use of the International Roughness Index (IRI) as a performance criterion to assess environmental consequences and pavement performance. A comprehensive search for relevant quantitative LCA studies, published from 2013 to 2023, was conducted across several bibliographic databases, following ISO 14040 standards. A total of fourteen case studies were analyzed, providing insight into frequently used software, databases, Life Cycle Impact Assessment (LCIA) methods, and functional units. Furthermore, global warming or greenhouse gases (GHG) were the most frequently used environmental indicators, while materials, transportation, and construction were the most inventoried life cycle phases. However, the search also highlighted limitations, including the availability of Brazilian data and scope definition. Nevertheless, a quantitative comparison between conventional pavements showed a low standard deviation. The scenarios studied demonstrated that using recycled materials in pavement construction and employing high-strength materials in layers and subgrade can reduce environmental impacts. In conclusion, these findings contribute to the development of sustainable pavement practices in Brazil and highlight the need for further research to validate current findings and address existing gaps.

Construction Technology and Pavement Performance of Dry-Mix Polyurethane Modified Asphalt Mixtures: A Case Study

Polyurethane Modified Asphalt Mixture (PUAM) has been confirmed to possess good engineering properties and is a potential replacement material for pavement construction. This study aimed to provide guidance for the promotion and application of PUAM in pavement engineering by exploring the construction technology and verifying the practicality. Dry-mix PUAM (DPAM), wet-mix PUAM (WPAM), and SBS-modified asphalt mixture (SBSAM) were prepared. After systematically investigating the construction process of the three mixtures, their pavement performance was comparatively evaluated. Subsequently, the DPAM was utilized to construct the trial pavement, and the completed pavement was tested and evaluated. Furthermore, the costs of the DPAM and SBSAM were analyzed. The results reveal that the construction technology had a significant effect on the mechanical properties of the mixtures. Compared with SBSAM, the optimum mixing temperature and time of the DPAM and WPAM were reduced. The mixing temperature, mixing time, and hitting number were recommended to be 160 °C, 60 s, and 75 times for the DPAM. Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy tests confirmed that the PU reacted sufficiently in the binder. The DPAM exhibited good overall pavement performance, and its low-temperature cracking and fatigue resistance were significantly better than that of SBSAM. Meanwhile, all the pavement indexes constructed with DPAM met specifications, and the performance and service condition of the test road after the operation will be paid attention to continuously. Additionally, the cost of DPAM was close to that of SBSAM, and the more straightforward construction process and better pavement performance of DPAM could reduce the construction energy consumption and maintenance frequency, which was meaningful for promoting the scale application of DPAM and the sustainable development of transportation infrastructure.

Study of the possibility of using sulfur asphalt and sulfur concrete in road construction

Abstract The introduction of new effective road construction materials for pavements and foundations of highways is an urgent task, including the development and application of resource-saving technologies aimed at the use of low-demand, large-tonnage mineral materials, semi-finished products, industrial waste, and their by-products. Research on this topic has shown that sulfur and sulfur-containing waste, as well as modified technical sulfur when used as a binder, should be widely used in sulfur structural and road concrete in liquid, granular, or lumpy form. Ferrous cakes from the Pobug Nickel Plant or “tailings” of sulfur ore flotation can be used as fillers for sulfur binder. Having a high specific surface, they will have a positive effect on the structure formation of sulfur during the crystallization of the melt in the direction of strengthening the structure. Their high acid resistance should significantly increase the corrosion resistance of sulfur concretes. Granular slag from a metallurgical plant can be used as a fine aggregate. Overburden rocks in the form of gabbro-dolerites, dolerites, and basalts can be used as acid-resistant large aggregates. To reduce the fragility of the sulfur binder, plasticizing additives such as naphthalene, chlorinated paraffin, and bitumen can be introduced. The results obtained in this study confirm a decrease in the cost in the production of asphalt and cement concrete and the possibility of expanding the range of building materials with new road-building mixtures. Also, the test results showed that when temperature was decreased, the strength characteristics of sulfur concrete in the temperature range 0°C to −60°C increased by 7%. Low water absorption of sulfur concrete (0.1%–0.3%) versus cement concrete (2%–4%), which positively affected the strength and operational characteristics, was revealed.

The Effect of Incorporating 100% of Undiluted and Diluted Reclaimed Epoxy Asphalt Materials into Pervious Cement Mixes

In order to improve the sustainability of road pavements, transportation agencies should consider designing pavements with recycled materials such as reclaimed epoxy asphalt pavement. Epoxy asphalt has recently attracted significant attention from the pavement community as a superior-performing binder that can help achieve long-lasting pavements. The recyclability of a proven long-life pavement material, such as epoxy asphalt, has now become one concern in promoting the use of epoxy asphalt binder in road pavements. Due to its thermosetting nature, the usual process of reclaiming asphalt pavement cannot be performed on epoxy asphalt pavement. Recent studies have investigated utilizing reclaimed epoxy asphalt materials in asphalt mixtures as black rock. In light of this, examining the use of reclaimed epoxy materials in cement-concrete mixes is important. The use of reclaimed epoxy asphalt materials in pavement construction is expected to gain more popularity and become a new sustainable construction option in various sustainable pavement applications in the near future. The main objective of this study is to investigate the effects of incorporating 100% reclaimed epoxy asphalt (hereinafter referred to as “epoxy RAP”) and reclaimed diluted epoxy asphalt materials (hereinafter referred to as “diluted epoxy RAP”) into cement-concrete mixes on the performance of the mixtures. The study also examined the effects of replacing cement with 5% silica fume on the performance of reclaimed mixtures. Five different mixtures were fabricated and tested in terms of density, void content, permeability, and compressive strength. Results of the density test revealed that replacing 100% natural aggregates with epoxy RAP and diluted epoxy RAP materials reduced density by an average of 10%. However, void content was found to increase with the incorporation of epoxy RAP, even when replacing Portland cement with silica fume. Regarding permeability, mixtures containing 100% epoxy RAP and diluted epoxy RAP materials have significantly higher permeability values compared with the natural mix value. However, adding 5% silica fume significantly reduced the permeability. Compressive test results indicated that substituting 100% of aggregates with epoxy RAP or diluted epoxy RAP materials would reduce compressive strength by 55% on average. Furthermore, adding silica fume to reclaimed mixes was found to have no apparent effect on compressive strength.

Laboratory performance evaluation of waste tire rubber (WTR) and ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA)-modified asphalt mixtures

ABSTRACT This paper aims to explore the performance and economy of asphalt mixture with waste tire rubber (WTR)/ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA) compound-modified asphalt. In this paper, five kinds of WTR/EVA asphalt mixture were selected as research targets, 70# base asphalt mixture and 5% styrene–butadiene–styrene (SBS) asphalt mixture were compared. Laboratory test results showed that WTR and EVA could significantly improve the performance of the asphalt mixture. The rutting resistance and anti-ageing ability of 15%WTR + 4%EVA asphalt mixture were superior to the 5% SBS asphalt mixture, and the anti-cracking ability and water stability were extremely close between them. Furthermore, the analysis of variance results revealed that WTR and EVA had a significant effect on asphalt mixture performance, the effect of EVA was more obvious than WTR. According to the economy analysis, the application of WTR/EVA-modified asphalt could significantly reduce construction costs, the material cost of 15%WTR + 4%EVA asphalt mixture was about 9.3% lower than 5% SBS asphalt mixture. As summarised above, WTR/EVA compound-modified asphalt mixture was an economical and environmentally pavement construction material due to its superior performance and lower cost, and 15%WTR + 4%EVA was the optimal combination dosage for asphalt mixture.

Effects of Metal Waste Strips on Strength Characteristics of Road Base Material

Metal manufacturing produces various types of byproducts and metal waste that have been growing exponentially. The increasing amounts of metal waste are usually disposed of in landfills, which causes soil and water pollution and increases the amount of gas emissions. On the other hand, in the field of pavement construction, the demand for natural materials is increasing rather rapidly. Many studies have suggested utilizing aggregate-like waste material in pavement construction, but there is little to no literature documenting the use of metal strips of different types. The aim of this study is to investigate utilizing the metal waste produced by the Intag Sohar company in layers of flexible pavement. Selected types of metal waste were utilized in the construction of the material used for base and subbase road layers. Three main parameters were studied: the number of layers, the distance between strips, and the direction of the strips. The effect of the metal waste on the pavement material is evaluated using the standard California Bearing Ratio test (CBR), which is the most important indication of the strength of the pavement material. Results show that the highest-quality mix consisted of four layers of metal waste with 1 cm spacing in one direction with CBR% values equal to 118.807%.

Utilization of waste wind turbine blades in performance improvement of asphalt mixture

Redundant wind turbine blades (WTBs) retired from wind power facilities produce substantial waste annually and induce challenging environmental problems. As the most widely used materials for high-grade pavement construction, asphalt mixtures must have excellent high- and low-temperature performance, as well as water damage resistance, since pavement is subjected to complex loading, temperature, and humidity changes. This study proposed an asphalt mixture with the addition of two types of recycled WTB (rWTB): rWTB powders of granular sizes below 0.075 mm and rWTB fibers in the size range of 0.075–9.5 mm. First, the thermogravimetric analysis results indicated the accepted thermal stability of rWTB material for the requirement of compaction, paving, and service condition of asphalt mixtures. Second, the properties of the asphalt mixtures modified by using (i) rWTB powder (5 wt%, 10 wt%, and 15 wt% in fine filler), (ii) rWTB fiber (0.1 wt%, 0.2 wt% and 0.3 wt% in fine aggregate), and (iii) both rWTB powder and fiber were investigated by wheel tracking tests at 60°C, three-point bending tests at −10°C, and Marshall immersion tests. The experimental results showed that the rWTB asphalt mixtures could improve the overall road performance of asphalt mixtures, and that an optimal pavement performance could be obtained by the synergistic addition of rWTB powder and fiber. In addition, it was indicated that the improving mechanism of the rWTB material on the asphalt mixture was mainly attributed to its good compatibility with the asphalt binder, allowing the rWTB to strengthen asphalt mortar and improve the high- and low-temperature performance of the asphalt mixture.

In-Service Performance Evaluation of Flexible Pavement with Lightweight Cellular Concrete Subbase

The objective of engineers to improve the long-term performance of road infrastructure in changing global climate has led to the development of alternate materials for pavement construction. Lightweight cellular concrete (LCC) is a viable option for colder climates where pavements undergo several freeze-thaw cycles each year, resulting in faster deterioration of pavements. This is due to LCCs’ excellent freeze-thaw resistance, ease of placement, and potential sustainability benefits such as reduced use of virgin material and industrial by-products. However, there is a need to quantify these benefits and develop unified specifications for using LCC in the pavement structure. Therefore, this study examined the performance of flexible pavement sections that included a subbase layer, unbound granular materials for the control section, and three LCC densities (400, 475, and 600 kg/m3) for the LCC sections. Post-construction evaluation of pavement stiffness and roughness were evaluated using a Lightweight deflectometer and SurPro equipment. The results showed that LCC subbase thickness ≥ 250 mm produced over 22% smoother riding surfaces than unbound granular pavements while increasing pavement stiffness by up to 21%. Finally, this study recommends that LCC subbase thickness should not be thinner than 250 mm when using densities below 475 kg/m3 over weak subgrades.

Mechanical Characteristics and Durability of HMA Made of Recycled Aggregates

The application of recycled aggregates in the asphalt industry has been investigated in recent decades. However, low percentages of these materials have practically been used in asphalt mixtures because of the limitations set by the relevant specifications due to their performance uncertainties. This research investigates the feasibility of increasing the percentage of recycled aggregates to 100% in hot mix asphalt (HMA). Recycled concrete aggregate (RCA), recycled glass (RG), and reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) were used to develop HMAs suitable for roads with light to medium traffic. First, potential mix designs were proposed using an innovative approach considering the industry’s needs. Next, the volumetric properties, tensile strength, moisture sensitivity and resilient modulus response of the mixtures under different temperature conditions were determined and compared. In general, the proposed recycled material HMA exhibited superior mechanical and resilient modulus performances, i.e., 45 to 145% increase in stiffness, and up to 99% higher in Marshall stability. Furthermore, higher tensile strength ratios of the recycled material mixtures indicated a greater resistance to water damage, and hence greater durability. The findings of this research provide evidence-based insights into the increased proportion of recycled materials in the construction of asphalt pavements, thereby promoting sustainable pavement construction materials.

A Review Paper on Reuse of Plastic Waste as Pavement Construction Material

Abstract: The exponential rise in the production of plastic and the consequential surge in plastic waste have led the scientists and researchers look out for innovative and sustainable means to reuse/recycle the plastic waste in order to reduce its negative impact on environment. Construction material, converting waste plastic into fuel, household goods, fabric and clothing are some of the sectors where waste plastic is emerging as a viable option. Out of these, construction material modified with plastic waste has garnered lot of attention. Modification of construction material with plastic waste serves a dual purpose. It reduces the amount of plastic waste going to landfills or litter and secondly lessens the use of mined construction materials, thereby mitigating the negative impact of construction industry on environment. This article summarizes advances related to the use of plastic waste as a component of building materials. The inclusion of plastic waste as a binder, aggregate, fine aggregate, modifier or substitute for cement and sand in the production of bricks, tiles, concrete and roads has been comprehensively considered. The effect of the addition of plastic waste on strength properties, water absorption, durability, etc. was also discussed in detail. Studies reviewed for this review were categorized according to whether they used plastic waste to produce bricks and tiles or concrete for road construction.
