Characterization of composite materials with recycled wind turbine blade additives using atomic force microscopy

ABSTRACT The European Union’s efforts to increase the share of renewable energy translate into a growing number of wind farms. Post-operation wind turbines become increasing waste. Recycling wind turbine blades is a challenge due to the materials used (composites) and high costs. The article examines the influence of recyclate from wind turbine blades (derived from mechanical recycling) on the image of topography and Lateral Force Microscopy (LFM) in atomic force microscopy (AFM). Upon adding the recycled material, an increase in surface roughness is observed despite its prior polishing. The Young’s modulus determined from force spectroscopy (AFM mode) indicated a small difference in values between the matrix and reinforcement areas. This proves the significant influence of the primary and secondary interphase on the properties of secondary composites, which is an area for further research.

Supramolecular Composite Hydrogel Loaded with CaF2 Nanoparticles Promotes the Recovery of Periodontitis Bone Resorption.

Treatments to reduce periodontal inflammation and rescue periodontitis bone resorption have been of interest to researchers. Bone tissue engineering materials have been gradually used in the treatment of bone defects, but periodontal bone tissue regeneration still faces challenges. Considering the biocompatibility factor, constructing bionic scaffolds with natural extracellular matrix properties is an ideal therapeutic pathway. Based on the pathological mechanism of periodontitis, in this study, short peptide and nanometer inorganic particles were comingled to construct NapKFF-nano CaF2 supramolecular composite hydrogels with different ratios. Material characterization experiments confirmed that the composite hydrogel had suitable mechanical properties and a three-dimensional structure that can function in the resorption region of the alveolar bone and provide spaces for cell proliferation and adhesion. The release of low concentrations of fluoride and calcium ions has been shown to have positive biological effects in both in vivo and in vitro experiments. Vitro experiments confirmed that the composite hydrogel had good biocompatibility and promoted osteogenic differentiation of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs). Microbiological experiments confirmed that the composite hydrogel inhibited the activity of periodontal pathogenic bacteria. In animal studies, composite hydrogel applied to periodontitis rats in vivo can effectively repair alveolar bone resorption. This composite hydrogel has a simple preparation method and is inexpensive to produce, yet it has antibacterial and osteogenesis-promoting incremental effects, which makes it well suited for the treatment of periodontitis bone resorption, providing a new strategy for periodontal bone tissue engineering.

Performance and mechanism investigation of Cu loading and S vacancy synergistic promotion of MoS2 catalyzed low-temperature water gas shift reaction: Experimental and theoretical calculations

In this paper, MoS2 with S vacancies and Cu loading (Cu/VS-MoS2) was synthesized and used for low-temperature water gas shift reactions (WGSR); the intrinsic reasons and reaction mechanisms for the high catalytic activity of Cu/VS-MoS2 were studied through DFT calculation. The material characterization fully confirms the successful construction of Cu loading and S vacancies on spherical cluster structures of Cu/VS-MoS2. The experimental results show that Cu/VS-MoS2 exhibits the highest CO conversion, up to 40.41%, which is 3.9 times, 1.8 times, and 1.5 times higher than MoS2, VS-MoS2, and Cu/MoS2, respectively. DFT calculations indicate that Cu/VS-MoS2 has high WGSR activity due to the superior electron transfer ability of the dual active sites, and the S vacancy is used to activate CO to generate CO2, while the Cu site activates H2O to produce hydrogen. The synergistic effect of S vacancies and Cu sites, while satisfying hydrogen production and carbon dioxide enrichment, greatly enhances the activity of MoS2. In addition, Cu/VS-MoS2 can more effectively break down the transfer barriers between surface electrons and CO, H2O molecules, allowing electrons to continuously transfer to CO and H2O using S vacancies and Cu atoms as mediators, reducing the energy barrier of the rate-determining step in association mechanism.

Characterization and Modeling of Out-of-Plane Behavior of Fiber-Based Materials: Numerical Illustration of Wrinkle in Deep Drawing.

The characterization and modeling of the out-of-plane behavior of fiber-based materials is essential for understanding their mechanical properties and improving their performance in various applications, especially in the forming process. Despite this, research on paper and paperboard has mainly focused on its in-plane behavior rather than its out-of-plane behavior. However, for accurate material characterization and modeling, it is critical to consider the out-of-plane behavior. In particular, delamination occurs during forming processes such as creasing, folding, and deep drawing. In this study, three material models for paperboard are presented: a single all-material continuum model and two composite models using different cohesion methods. The two composite models decouple in-plane and out-of-plane behavior and consist of continuum models describing the behavior of individual layers and cohesive interface models connecting the layers. Material characterization experiments are performed to derive the model parameters and verify the models. The models are validated using three-point bending and bulge tests and show good agreement. A case study is also conducted on the application of the three models in the simulation of a deep drawing process with respect to wrinkle formation. By comparing the simulation results of wrinkle formation in the deep drawing process, the composite models, especially the cohesive interface composite model, show greater accuracy in replicating the experimental results, indicating that a single continuum model can also be used to represent wrinkles.

Application of Numerical Modeling and Finite Element Analysis in Fused Filament Fabrication: A Review.

Additive manufacturing (AM) is not necessarily a new process but an advanced method for manufacturing complex three-dimensional (3D) parts. Among the several advantages of AM are the affordable cost, capability of building objects with complex structures for small-batch production, and raw material versatility. There are several sub-categories of AM, among which is fused filament fabrication (FFF), also commonly known as fused deposition modeling (FDM). FFF has been one of the most widely used additive manufacturing techniques due to its cost-efficiency, simplicity, and widespread availability. The FFF process is mainly used to create 3D parts made of thermoplastic polymers, and complex physical phenomena such as melt flow, heat transfer, solidification, crystallization, etc. are involved in the FFF process. Different techniques have been developed and employed to analyze these phenomena, including experimental, analytical, numerical, and finite element analysis (FEA). This study specifically aims to provide a comprehensive review of the developed numerical models and simulation tools used to analyze melt flow behavior, heat transfer, crystallization and solidification kinetics, structural analysis, and the material characterization of polymeric components in the FFF process. The strengths and weaknesses of these numerical models are discussed, simplifications and assumptions are highlighted, and an outlook on future work in the numerical modeling and FE simulation of FFF is provided.

Bolus Effect Caused by Use of Thermoplastic Masks in Head and Neck Radiotherapy Treatments.

This paper examines the dosimetric uncertainty arising from the use of thermoplastic masks in the treatment of head and neck cancer through radiotherapy. This study was conducted through Monte Carlo simulations using the Monte Carlo N-Particle eXtended (MCNPX code), and the theoretical results are compared with radiochromic films. Using material characterization techniques, the compounds of the thermoplastic mask were identified, confirming that most of the material corresponds to the polymer C10H16O4. The theoretical results show increases ranging from 42% to 57.4% in the surface absorbed dose for 6 and 15 MV photon beams, respectively, compared to the absorbed dose without the mask. The experimental data corroborate these findings, showing dose increases ranging from 18.4% to 52.1% compared to the expected surface absorbed dose without the mask. These results highlight the need to consider the bolus effect induced by thermoplastic masks during the precise and safe planning and application of radiotherapy treatment in order to ensure its therapeutic efficacy and minimize the associated risks to patients.

Nanostructure silver absorbance with polarized light spectroscopy (PLS) and mobile imaging

This study presents a novel interdisciplinary approach for characterizing the optical properties of nanostructured silver films, combining methodologies from polarized light spectroscopy (PLS) and mobile app-based spectroscopic image detection. Silver nanofilms were deposited using electron beam evaporation (EBE) and subsequently analyzed for their absorbance across the visible light spectrum through PLS spectroscopy. The innovative aspect of this study lies in the validation of PLS spectral data using a mobile application developed with MIT App Inventor, which analyzes the intensity of light beams captured in images taken by a smartphone. The findings indicate that the silver nanofilm exhibits peak absorbance at approximately 400 nm within the violet region, corroborated by the mobile app’s data, which shows the lowest light intensity. However, discrepancies were observed from 500 to 600 nm, likely due to ambient light interferences and inherent optical phenomena such as diffraction, reflection, and refraction. Despite these deviations, the app’s readings closely align with the PLS data, supporting the film’s selective absorption properties. This study demonstrates the potential of this multidisciplinary technique in nanomaterial research, highlighting the application of nanotechnology in material science and the transformative potential of integrating software engineering for in-depth material characterization. These findings open avenues for advancements in both academic and practical applications.

Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectral Library of MXenes.

Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy characterization is a powerful and easy-to-use technique frequently employed for the characterization and fingerprinting of materials. Although MXenes are a large and fastest growing family of inorganic 2D materials, the lack of systematic FTIR spectroscopy studies hinders its application to MXenes and often leads to misinterpretation of the results. In this study, we report experimental and calculated FTIR spectra of 12 most typical carbide and carbonitride MXenes with different compositions (5 transition metals) and all four basic structures, including Ti2CT x , Nb2CT x , Mo2CT x , V2CT x , Ti3C2T x , Ti3CNT x , Mo2TiC2T x , Mo2Ti2C3T x , Nb4C3T x , V4C3T x , Ta4C3T x , and Mo4VC4T x . The measurements were performed on delaminated MXene flakes incorporated in KBr pellets in the 4000-400 cm-1 range. We provide detailed instructions for sample preparation, data collection, and interpretation of FTIR spectra of MXenes. Background correction and spectra smoothing are applied to obtain clear FTIR peaks corresponding to bond vibrations in MXenes. Density functional theory calculations were used for the precise assignment of all characteristic FTIR peaks and an in-depth analysis of the vibration modes. This work aims to provide the 2D material community with the FTIR spectroscopy technique as a reliable method for identifying and analyzing MXenes.

Two-Dimensional Ferroelectric Materials: Synthesis, Characterization and Applications

In recent years, the continuous advancements in microelectronics have driven the evolution of electronic devices towards miniaturization and integration. However, at the nanoscale level, surface and size effects become significant, imposing constraints on the use of conventional bulk ferroelectric materials in contemporary industry. As a result, in the field of materials research, two-dimensional (2D) ferroelectric materials with stable spontaneous polarization and minimal size effects have gained significant attention. These novel 2D ferroelectric materials have great potential for future nano-level ferroelectric applications, enabling high levels of device integration. To begin with, this paper divides 2D ferroelectric materials into two categories: intrinsic ferroelectrics and sliding ferroelectrics. It also discusses the features and current state of research on each of these categories. Next, typical 2D ferroelectric material preparation and characterization techniques are outlined. Additionally, 2D ferroelectric memory devices like ferroelectric diodes (FD), ferroelectric field effect transistors (FeFET), ferroelectric semiconductor field-effect transistors (FeSFET), and ferroelectric tunnel junctions (FTJ) are introduced. Finally, this review also presents expectations and potential challenges in the domain of 2D ferroelectric materials.

Synthesis of Ultrathin FeS Nanosheets via Chemical Vapor Deposition.

Fe-based 2D materials exhibit rich chemical compositions and structures, which may imply many unique physical properties and promising applications. However, achieving controllable preparation of ultrathin non-layered FeS crystal on SiO2/Si substrate remains a challenge. Herein, the influence of temperature and molecular sieves is reported on the synthesis of ultrathin FeS nanosheets with a thickness as low as 2.3nm by molecular sieves-assisted chemical vapor deposition (CVD). The grown FeS nanosheets exhibit a non-layered hexagonal NiAs structure and belong to the P63/mmc space group. The inverted symmetry broken structure is confirmed by the angle-resolved second harmonic generation (SHG) test. In particular, the 2D FeS nanosheets exhibit exceptional metallic behavior, with conductivity up to 1.63 × 106S m-1 at 300K for an 8nm thick sample, which is higher than that of reported 2D metallic materials. This work provides a significant contribution to the synthesis and characterization of 2D non-layered Fe-based materials.

Preparation and characterization of low-activity coal bottom ash-based cementitious materials via orthogonal experiment

The effective use of coal bottom ash produced by burning coal can reduce the pollution of solid waste to land and water resources. Meanwhile, the use of coal bottom ash as cementitious materials can reduce the demand for traditional resources and carbon emissions, availing to promoting the sustainable development of the construction industry. However, the application and popularization of coal bottom ash-based cementitious materials are facing many practical problems. For example, the utilization rate of coal bottom ash is low, and the traditional alkali activation method has some limitations such as high cost and poor safety. For this reason, through orthogonal experiment and range analysis, new calcium combination activators were explored for the preparation and optimization of coal bottom ash-based cementitious materials. The coal bottom ash-based cementitious materials with compressive strength up to 17 MPa was prepared, when the mass ratio of CaO: Ca(OH)2: AlPO4 was 1: 0.15: 0.10 : 0.05 and preparation temperature was 15 °C. Furthermore, the influence of various factors on the compressive strength of the products was evaluated comprehensively: AlPO4 > CaO and Ca(OH)2 > preparation temperature. The action effect and reaction mechanism of various factors were revealed by means of fluidity test, setting time test, XRD, FTIR and SEM-EDS. The results show that calcium combination activators react with coal bottom ash to mainly form C-A-S-H gel. Among the calcium combination activators, CaO greatly improves the rate of early hydration reaction, Ca(OH)2 is conducive to the sustained and stable development of late hydration reaction, and AlPO4 can improve the fluidity and setting time of the slurry. Moreover, although the water and environment temperature show the weakest influence in the laboratory stage, the influence of this factor on the property of the cementitious materials in the actual project cannot be ignored. This research has important scientific and engineering significance for promoting coal bottom ash-based cementitious materials in economic development and environmental protection.

Promoted electrochemical performance by MOF on MOF composite catalyst of microbial fuel cell: CuCo-MOF@ZIF-8 and the comparison between two-step hydrothermal method and dual-solution method

The microbial fuel cell (MFC) is a device that simultaneously achieves electricity generation and sewage degradation. In this study, a novel cathode catalyst metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been fabricated by two-step hydrothermal and dual-solution method (CuCo-MOF@ZIF-8). The synthesized trimetal MOFs exhibited a 3D badminton-like structure morphology and porosity. The results of the characterizations showed that CuCo-MOF@ZIF-8 possesses greater surface area porosity and novel functional groups. The Trimetal MOF-on-MOF mode not only demonstrated the stability of the structure but also enhanced its mechanism. Molecular mechanism analysis revealed changes in the organic ligand and metal binding site due to the transformation of Cu2+ to Cu+, Co2+ to Co3+, and Zn–N to Zn–O organic connection. Furthermore, differences between the two fabrication methods were compared. The solid-state single preparation (CuCo-MOF@ZIF-8-1), was synthesized using the two-step hydrothermal method; the liquid mixed preparation material (CuCo-MOF@ZIF-8-2), was synthesized using the dual-solution method; they exhibited completely different chemical structures and morphologies during material testing and characterization. The maximum output power density of CuCo-MOF@ZIF-8-2-MFC was 246.38 mW/m2, about 2.49 times of ZIF-8 (98.72 mW/m2). The output voltage of CuCo-MOF@ZIF-8-1-MFC was measured at 357 mV over 10 d, while that of CuCo-MOF@ZIF-8-2-MFC reached 365 mV over 12 d.

Potential of digital autoradiography for characterization of uranium materials

This study evaluates the capabilities of a commercial digital autoradiography set-up in characterizing the spatial distribution of radioactivity in U-bearing materials. Two different imaging plates (IPs) from various manufacturers, as well as three read-out granularities (25 µm, 50 µm, and 100 µm) of a high-resolution IP scanner, were tested. A custom software, developed using Python, was used for processing of the image raw data obtained from the IP scanner. The software extracted 25 intensity profiles from each autoradiographic image, allowing for a detailed analysis of the data. By applying various mathematical fitting functions, important metrics such as edge width, amplitude of the flat top, and central core width of the intensity profiles were determined. This provided valuable insights into the interaction between the U samples and IPs, particularly for samples of different geometry and thickness. Comparisons were made between samples embedded in epoxy resin or modelling clay and non-embedded U specimens. The results highlighted the superior performance of epoxy embedding in the characterization of U-bearing materials. The variation in signal intensity between runs for individual samples reached up to 20 %, showing consistent behavior across all samples in each measurement. This suggests that the inconsistency in signal response during repetitive analysis is likely due to the IP scanner rather than the IP itself. By using the analytical method of global spatial autocorrelation (Moran’s I), we were able to effectively detect enrichment inhomogeneity within low enriched UO2 pellets. The Moran’s I value quantified the levels of inhomogeneity, providing a numerical measure that was not visually apparent from the digital autoradiographic image.

Open-Source Data Analysis Tool for Spectral Small-Angle X-ray Scattering Using Spectroscopic Photon-Counting Detector.

Spectral small-angle X-ray scattering (sSAXS) is a powerful technique for material characterization from thicker samples by capturing elastic X-ray scattering data in angle- and energy-dispersive modes at small angles. This approach is enabled by the use of a 2D spectroscopic photon-counting detector that provides energy and position information of scattered photons when a sample is irradiated by a polychromatic X-ray beam. Here, we describe an open-source tool with a graphical interface for analyzing sSAXS data obtained from a 2D spectroscopic photon-counting detector with a large number of energy bins. The tool takes system geometry parameters and raw detector data to output 1D scattering patterns and a 2D spatially-resolved scattering map in the energy range of interest. We validated these features using data from samples of caffeine powder with well-known scattering peaks. This open-source tool will facilitate sSAXS data analysis for various material characterization applications.

Development of an event-specific PCR method to quantify genetically modified soybean DBN8002 on both real-time and digital PCR platforms

The genetically modified (GM) soybean DBN8002 has been approved for commercial planting in China. For enforcing GMO labeling policy, an event-specific real-time quantitative PCR (qPCR) method was developed to target the junction fragment between the T-DNA left border and the flanking genomic DNA, yielding a 104 base pair (bp) amplicon. This event-specific qPCR method can identify and quantify the DBN8002 event with high specificity, satisfactory linearity, and acceptable accuracy. Furthermore, the DBN8002-event specific primer/probe set was successfully transferred to a droplet digital PCR (ddPCR) platform for quantification. The quantitative results from qPCR were found to be comparable to those obtained from ddPCR, with a P-value exceeding 0.05, indicating no significant difference. The limit of detection (LOD) for both qPCR and ddPCR methods was determined to be 10 copies per reaction, while the limit of quantification (LOQ) was estimated to be 20 copies per reaction for qPCR and 40 copies per reaction for ddPCR. The collaborative validation demonstrated that the DBN8002 event-specific qPCR method had satisfactory repeatability and reproducibility. Both the event-specific qPCR and ddPCR methods are suitable for quantifying the DBN8002 content in samples. Additionally, ddPCR can be utilized for the characterization of DBN8002 reference materials.

SANS investigation of fungal loosenins reveal substrate dependent impacts of protein 1 action on inter-fibril distance and packing order of cellulosic substrates.

Microbial expansin-related proteins include fungal loosenins, which have been previously shown to disrupt cellulose networks and enhance the enzymatic conversion of cellulosic substrates. Despite showing beneficial impacts to cellulose processing, detailed characterization of cellulosic materials after loosenin treatment is lacking. In this study, small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) was used to investigate the effects of three recombinantly produced loosenins that originate from Phanerochaete carnosa, PcaLOOL7, PcaLOOL9, and PcaLOOL12, on the organization of holocellulose preparations from Eucalyptus and Spruce wood samples. Whereas the SANS analysis of Spruce holocellulose revealed an increase in interfibril spacing of neighboring cellulose microfibrils following treatment with PcaLOOL12 and to a lesser extent PcaLOOL7, the analysis of Eucalyptus holocellulose revealed a reduction in packing number following treatment with PcaLOOL12 and to a lesser extent PcaLOOL9. Parallel SEC-SAXS characterization of PcaLOOL7, PcaLOOL9, and PcaLOOL12 indicated the proteins likely function as monomers; moreover, all appear to retain a flexible disordered N-terminus and folded C-terminal region. The comparatively high impact of PcaLOOL12 motivated its NMR structural characterization, revealing a double-psi b-barrel (DPBB) domain surrounded by three alpha-helices - the largest nestled against the DPBB core and the other two part of loops extending from the core. The SANS analysis of PcaLOOL action on holocellulose samples confirms their ability to disrupt cellulose fiber networks and suggests a progression from reducing microfibril packing to increasing interfibril distance. The most impactful PcaLOOL, PcaLOOL12, was previously observed to be the most highly expressed loosenin in P. carnosa. Its structural characterization herein reveals its stabilization through two disulfide linkages, and an extended N-terminal region distal to a negatively charged and surface accessible polysaccharide binding groove.

Confocal Raman spectromicroscopy of graphene

Confocal Raman spectromicroscopy is becoming an essential tool in the location and characterisation of 2D and nano-structured materials. Here spectral fingerprints and the ratios of peaks within a Raman spectrum are often used to confirm the presence of a materials and its dimensionality. For example, the number of layers of carbon materials are indicated through the observed 2D/G band ratio. However, large variation in data currently exists for graphene and this variability can lead to material mischaracterisation, ultimately resulting in unpredictable properties and irreproducible performance when these materials are incorporated into devices. In this manuscript, we report an investigation into aspects of confocal Raman microscopy and identify microscope features, such as chromatic aberrations, that may contribute to the variability in properties used in the characterisation of 2D materials. We also provide protocols for ensuring that materials are accurately characterised to enable better translation of 2D materials into devices.

Preparation of composite calcium phosphate cement scaffold loaded with Hedysarum polysaccharides and its efficacy in repairing bone defects

It’s imperative to create a more ideal biological scaffold for bone defect repair. Calcium phosphate bone cements (CPC) could be used as a scaffold. Some ingredients and osteogenic factors could be added to improve its poor mechanical properties and biological activity. As a macromolecule extracted from traditional Chinese medicine, Hedysarum polysaccharides (HPS) would significantly promote the osteogenic activity of bone biomaterials. Zirconium oxide and starch were added to the solid phase and citric acid was added to the liquid phase to optimize CPC. HPS was loaded onto the scaffold as an osteogenic factor, and the prepared CPS + HPS was characterized. Further, the cytocompatibility of CPS + HPS was assessed according to activity, differentiation, and calcification in neonatal rat calvarial osteoblasts, and the biosafety of CPS + HPS was evaluated according to acute toxicity, pyrogen, sensitization, and hemolysis. The success of CPS + HPS in repairing bone defects was evaluated by using a rabbit femur implantation experiment. After optimization, CPS-20-CA-5 containing 10% starch and 5% citric acid displayed the highest mechanical strength of 28.96 ± 0.03 MPa. HPS-50 was demonstrated to exert the best osteogenic effect. The combination of CPS + HPS achieved HPS-loaded CPC. Material characterization, cytocompatibility, biosafety, and femoral implantation experiments indicated that CPS + HPS possessed better pressure resistance and improved osteogenic ability in bone defect repair.CPS + HPS demonstrated effective pressure resistance and superior osteogenic ability, which may be of great significance for bone defects and bone tissue engineering to promote bone regeneration and repair.Graphical The composite CPS loaded with HPS-50 is an excellent scaffold with fine load-bearing ability and sustained release of osteogenic factors to repair bone defects.

MOF-derived high-entropy oxides (YTbDyErYb)2O3 for boosted non-contact physiological humidity monitoring induced by oxygen vacancy modulation

In recent years, high-entropy oxides (HEOs) have gained significant attention due to their unique structure, yet the usage of HEOs in gas/humidity sensing is still a vast expanse of land worthy of vigorous cultivation. Here, HEOs were designed via high-entropy metal-organic frameworks (HE-MOFs) as sacrificial templates and then calcined at different temperatures to obtain (YTbDyErYb)2O3 (named as HEO-600, HEO-700 and HEO-800). After material characterization, as-synthesized HEOs were explored as humidity sensing materials for the first time at a relative humidity (RH) range of 11%-97%. The HEO-700 sensor exhibits the optimized properties featured in a response of three orders of magnitude (2.8 × 103) and extremely short response time (2 s). The excellent humidity sensing performance of HEO-700 can be attributed to the large surface area (39.6 m2/g) and abundant oxygen vacancies (53.1%). In addition, the HEO-700 sensor demonstrates great potential in real-time human physiological moisture detection, such as finger, breath, and non-contact switch. It is believed that this contribution provides attracting humidity sensing candidate for practical applications, and moreover, will provide inspiration for design of new HEOs in this emerging field of solid-state sensory devices.

Enhancing Ni–Ti shape memory alloy diffusion bonding with Ti/Ni reactive multilayer foils

This study investigates the utilization of Ti/Ni reactive multilayer foils as an energy source for facilitating the joining of Ni–Ti shape memory alloys through diffusion bonding. Multilayered samples were prepared using a 10-cycle accumulative roll bonding (ARB) process to be used for the bonding process. Diffusion bonding employing reactive multilayers was conducted over a temperature range of 600 °C to 900 °C, at 5 MPa pressure, with a 1-h hold time. Additionally, a comparison was made with a diffusion-bonded Nitinol sample at 900 °C without a reactive multilayer. Materials characterization and testing involved scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), shear strength testing, and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), which were conducted on the bonded samples. The findings underscored the advantages of using reactive multilayers for diffusion bonding. These benefits included the formation of TiNi and the induction of a shape memory effect in the joint region, alongside a 1.5 times shear strength compared to identical diffusion bonding conditions without reactive multilayers. Moreover, employing reactive multilayers in the diffusion bonding of Nitinol holds promise for significantly reducing the energy needed to achieve robust and seamless bonded boundaries in the joining area.
