Building the conversion table of semantic match between researchers specialty codes for Section 1 Natural Sciences of HAC Classification and GRNTI subject headings

The authors discuss the results of building interreflections (matches) of research specialty codes and GRNTI subject headings based on the comparative intellectual analysis. The current master version of the State Rubricator of Scitech Information (SRSTI, GRNTI) and the verified version of the Higher Attestation Commission (HAC, VAK) are compared. The interreflection of specialty codes of these two classifications are defined as the relations of logical match, inclusion and overlapping of extensions within the subject scope of studies as indicated in the profiles of specialties and corresponding GRNTI subject headings. To illustrate the algorithm of the HAC and GRNTI classifications comparative analysis and building the conversion table of code matches, the authors provide the example of sematic matches between the specialty codes within Section 1.1.6 Hydrobiology and GRNTI subject headings. The study to form the aggregate of interreflections of codes is accomplished in full for every group of research specialties within Section 1 Natural Sciences of the HAS Classification. In total, 97 researcher specialty codes are indexed with 1,958 matches assigned; the comparison with GRNTI thematic structure is accomplished for 1,755 study areas as indicated in 128 profiles of 6 specialty groups. The general and specific patterns of semantic match distribution between HAS codes and GRNTI subject headings are identified for Section 1 Natural Sciences.

The hemophilia quality of life scale: a systematic review.

Quality of life refers to the degree of well-being a person feels. The development of a hemophilia-targeting quality of life scale is important for hemophiliacs and their treating physicians. Textual analysis. First, a review of studies on quality of life, hemophilia and related quality of life scales was conducted; Subsequently, two rounds of systematic searches of the Springer database were conducted to filter the literature on universal quality of life scale studies and hemophilia-targeting quality of life scale studies by title and abstract, and then textual analysis was performed. The former included 77,456 articles, 26,117 chapters and 7,086 related bibliographies, while the latter initially retrieved 211 entries articles, 118 chapters and 43 related bibliographies. Through filtering, the former contains 22 documents, yielding 1,431 valid word stems, and the latter contains 9 documents, yielding 1,541 valid word stems. While universal quality of life scales mostly fit into the broad framework of WHOQOL- BREF, the development of hemophilia-targeting quality of life scales inclines towards pains that patients suffer and technology advances in pharmaceutical. The current hemophilia QOL scales are mainly based on the HR-QoL, others mainly based on the HR-QoL as the master version. At the same time, the popularization of existing hemophilia quality of life scales in developing countries like China is not high, and the development of hemophilia quality of life scales is insufficient.

GRNTI 2022 Master Version. (Part 2. Updating and improving links and reference tools of the Rubricator)

The authors introduce the findings of their research on updating and improving the existing (2021) master version of the State Rubricator of Sci-tech Information (GRNTI) and preparing the master version 2022, in particular, updating and improving the Rubricator links and reference tools to these tools of GRNTI Master Version 2021. Four types of references are used to point to logical connections of subject headings supplementing the classification hierarchy fixed in the code structure of the GRNTI General Table, namely “see”, “see also”, “see cross reference”, “equivalent”, and Notes [in Russian]. The general statistics of updates and developments in all three GRNTI levels are presented in the Appendix A. Most changes are made to the “see also” reference, which evidences on the increased share of interdisciplinary scientific research in the thematic structure of the GRNTI 2022 Master Version. This level of generalization with logical grouping and concepts ordering, including polyhierarchichal connections, reflects the general trends in the modern scientific and technological knowledge. The reference tools of the GRNTI 2022 General Tables maintain distinction of aspects reflected in the subject headings with logical-semantic connections. This enables to refer documents to relevant headings when indexing.

GRNTI 2022 master version. (Part 1. Developing thematic and structural organization of subject heading nodes)

The authors introduce the findings of their research on updating and improving the existing master version of the State Rubricator of Sci-tech Information (GRNTI) version 2021 and building the General Classification Schedule of the master GRNTI 2022 version. They define the main functions of GRNTI as the standard classification of the State System of Sci-tech Information. The functional efficiency depends on the compliance of the Rubricator’s subject and structural organization to the current status and trends of scientific knowledge and technologies. The main stages of the accomplished studies are described: comparative intellectual analysis of subject scope and hierarchy of GRNTI classes and thematic description of sections within the Plan of Fundamental and Thematic Scientific Research for 2021–2030; submitting proposals for GRNTI by researchers of relevant research institutes and STI agencies; analyzing and content editing of GRNTI proposals, eliminating concept duplication, and updating links and references. The authors include the statistics of changes distribution in GRNTI 2021 by types: changed subject headings, new headings introduction, and elimination of the subject headings. Statistical indicators are analyzed to characterize GRNTI subject and structural organization, as well as its thematic classes (2nd and 3rd level headings).

Enter and Discuss Orders and Prescriptions (EPA 4): A Curriculum for Fourth-Year Medical Students.

Order entry, entrustable professional activity (EPA) 4, is one of several EPAs that residency program directors identify as a weakness for PGY 1 residents. A multispecialty survey of program directors indicated that only 69% of interns could be trusted to enter and discuss orders and prescriptions without supervision. To address this gap, we developed a formative workshop for fourth-year medical students. Prior to the start of their subinternships, 366 fourth-year medical students engaged in an order entry workshop. Students performed chart reviews on electronic standardized patients within an educational electronic health record (EHR), placed admission orders, customized order sets, responded to safety alerts, utilized decision support tools, and incorporated high-value care considerations. Students used expert-validated rubrics to assess the quality of their admission orders and participated in a facilitated group discussion on key learning points. Finally, students participated in order entry, with all orders requiring cosignature by a supervising physician, during their clinical rotations. Students reported their confidence with order entry before and after the workshop and after the clinical rotation. One hundred seventeen students completed the pre- and postworkshop surveys, and 99 went on to complete the postcourse evaluation. Students showed a statistically significant increase in their confidence level following the workshop. Order entry is a critical, complex skill that requires deliberate instruction. This curriculum, which leverages the features of an educational EHR, can facilitate instruction, practice, and confidence gains regarding order entry prior to further application of these skills in the clinical environment.

Integrating trophic data from the literature: The Danube River food web

In the era of bioinformatics and big data, ecological research depends on large and easily accessible databases that make it possible to construct complex system models. Open-access data repositories for food webs via publications and ecological databases (e.g. EcoBase) are becoming increasingly common, yet certain ecosystem types are underrepresented (e.g. rivers). In this paper, we compile the trophic connections (predator-prey relationships) for the Danube River ecosystem as gathered from globally available literature data. Data are analyzed by Danube regions separately (Upper, Middle, Lower Danube) as well as an integrated master network version. The master version has been aggregated into larger taxonomic categories. Local and global metrics were used to analyze and compare each network. We find disparity between regions (the Middle Danube having most nodes, but still quite heterogenous), we identify the most important trophic groups, and explain ways on evaluating missing data using each aggregation stage. This data-driven approach, summarizing our presently documented knowledge, can be used for preparing preliminary models and to further refine the Danube River food web in the future.

Validation of the American English Acute Cystitis Symptom Score.

The diagnosis of acute uncomplicated cystitis (UC) is usually based on clinical symptoms. The study aims to develop and validate the American-English Acute Cystitis Symptom Score (ACSS), a self-reporting questionnaire for diagnosis and patient-reported outcome in women with acute uncomplicated cystitis (UC). After certified translation into American-English and cognitive assessment, the clinical validation of the ACSS was performed embedded in a US phase-II trial. 167 female patients with typical symptoms of UC were included in the study following US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) guidance. At Day 1 (diagnosis), the mean (SD) sum score of the six ACSS typical symptoms reached 10.60 (2.51). Of 100 patients followed-up last time on Day 5 or 6 (End-of-treatment, EoT), 91 patients showed clinical success according to the favored ACSS criteria (sum score of typical symptoms 0.98 (1.94)). There was no correlation between the severity of symptoms on Day 1 or between clinical success rate at EoT and level of bacteriuria on Day 1. The American-English ACSS showed high predictive ability and responsiveness and excellent levels of reliability and validity. It can now be recommended as the new master version in clinical and epidemiological studies, in clinical practice, or for self-diagnosis of women with symptoms of UC.

Postural stability in people with visual impairment.

BackgroundThe visual system enables the brain to assess information regarding the position of the body in space. Congenital or acquired blindness leads to the development of abnormal sensory‐motor interactions that results in development of typical musculoskeletal deformities and gait patterns that cause disability. Diabetes and related complications are expected to increase exponentially in the next 10 years; thus, the number of people with visual impairment is expected to increase. However, there have been few studies regarding etio‐pathogenesis of postural alteration and balance impairment in people with visual impairment; moreover, no previous study has investigated postural stability in this population. This study aimed to assess the center of gravity (COG) velocity in subjects with visual impairment and compared with that in sighted subjects.MethodsSeventy male subjects, 20–40 years of age, participated in this study; they were divided into sighted (control) and visually impaired groups. COG velocity while standing on an unstable surface was measured using the NeuroCom® Balance Master Version 8.5.0. For the sighted group, data were recorded with eyes open and then with eyes closed. For the visually impaired group, no instructions were given with respect to eyes during data collection.ResultsMean COG velocity was significantly higher in the visually impaired group than in the sighted group with eyes open. However, there was no difference in mean COG velocity between the visually impaired group and the sighted group with eyes closed. The difference in mean COG velocity between sighted subjects with eyes open and eyes closed was also significant. Mean COG velocity while standing on a foam surface varied among visually impaired subjects and sighted subjects with eyes open and closed.ConclusionThis study showed that subjects with visual impairment, regardless of eye opening or closure, behave in the same manner as sighted subjects with eyes closed.

Effect of tongue position on postural stability during quiet standing in healthy young males

Background and aims: Role of the neck and jaw sensory motor system in control of body balance has been established. Tongue is an integral part of jaw sensory motor system and helps in execution of purposeful and precise motor tasks like eating, drinking and speaking. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the possible effects of tongue position on the postural control system.Materials and method: We compared the mean center of gravity (COG) velocity during quiet standing on an unstable surface with eyes closed during two test conditions: (i) with habitual jaw resting position and (ii) with instructed tongue positioned against the upper incisors. One hundred and sixteen normal healthy male subjects (average age 31.56 ± 8.51 years and height 170.86 ± 7.26 cm) participated in the study. Their COG velocity (deg/s) was measured using the NeuroCom® Balance Master version 8.5.0 (Clackamas, OR, USA).Results and conclusions: The results show that COG velocity decreased significantly while tongue was positioned against upper incisors in comparison to the habitual jaw resting position. Our findings suggest that the tongue positioning can modulate postural control mechanisms. Tongue positioning against the upper incisors can enhance the postural stability during upright standing on an unstable surface and in the absence of vision in healthy young adults. Our findings can be of value for evaluation and rehabilitation protocols for postural control dysfunction.

Effect of chewing on postural stability during quiet standing in healthy young males

Background and aims: There is an important role of the neck sensory motor system in control of body posture and balance, and it is reasonable to believe that the jaw sensory motor system can directly and indirectly influence the modulation of the postural control system. The purpose of this study was to evaluate possible effects of dynamic jaw position while chewing on the postural control system.Materials and methods: We compared the mean center of gravity (COG) velocity during quite standing on a foam surface with eyes closed during three test conditions: (i) with resting jaw position, (ii) with open jaw position, and (iii) while chewing standard bolus of chewing gum. One hundred and sixteen normal healthy male subjects (average age 31.56 ± 8.51 years; height 170.86 ± 7.26 cm) were recruited for the study. Their COG velocity (deg/s) was measured using the NeuroCom® Balance Master Version 8.5.0 (Clackamas, OR, USA).Statistical analysis: Data was tested by the Friedman test.Results and conclusions. The results show that COG velocity decreased significantly while chewing in comparison to both open and resting jaw position (p < 0.0001). Our finding corroborates previous studies and suggests that the jaw sensory motor system can modulate postural control mechanisms. Gum chewing activity can enhance the postural stability during upright standing on an unstable surface and in the absence of visual input in healthy young adults. Our results should be taken into consideration in treatment and rehabilitation planning for patients with postural instability.

Data and database standards for permanent forest plots in a global network

The Center for Tropical Forest Science established a network of 50-ha forest inventory plots in the 1980s, and now assists local scientists with field and database methods at 44 large-scale plots across boreal, temperate, and tropical forest biomes. We published detailed field methods over a decade ago, but at that time, data were maintained in spreadsheet-like formats, most harboring design flaws that resulted in frequent errors. We since established detailed database methods and a normalized data model for housing multiple censuses of large plots. Our largest databases include >2 million measurements, and each has a master version on a server where all collaborators can access and edit data. This paper focuses on the data requirements for handling tree census data and how to design databases to meet these requirements and to ensure data integrity. There are six key elements of a tree census which the database must reflect: (1) measurements, including individual trees (genetic units), stems within trees, and multiple measurements of stems; both field and data methods must assure that every tree, stem, and measurement is precisely identified and can be relocated easily; (2) coordinates, including quadrats within a plot, because field mapping is usually done by assigning x–y coordinates relative to local quadrat markers; (3) taxonomy, carrying a species identity for every tree with a history of individual re-identifications; (4) personnel, with records of the people who performed field and data work per quadrat; (5) assessment of field error via random re-measurements; and (6) a log of changes and a system of archiving so that errors can be tracked and past versions can be reconstructed and cited in publications. A well-designed database model reduces a variety of integrity errors and improves access to data tables in identical formats across many plots, allowing data analyses to be easily replicated and results to be compared. The principal disadvantage is that complexity of the database requires experienced data managers.

THE KINETIC INTERPRETATION OF THE DGLAP EQUATION, ITS KRAMERS–MOYAL EXPANSION AND POSITIVITY OF HELICITY DISTRIBUTIONS

According to a rederivation — due to Collins and Qiu — the DGLAP equation can be reinterpreted (in leading order) in a probabilistic way. This form of the equation has been used indirectly to prove the bound |Δ f(x, Q)| &lt; f(x, Q) between polarized and unpolarized distributions, or positivity of the helicity distributions, for any Q. We reanalyze this issue by performing a detailed numerical study of the positivity bounds of the helicity distributions. To obtain the numerical solution we implement an x-space based algorithm for polarized and unpolarized distributions to next-to-leading order in αs, which we illustrate. We also elaborate on some of the formal properties of the Collins–Qiu form and comment on the underlying regularization, introduce a Kramers–Moyal expansion of the equation and briefly analyze its Fokker–Planck approximation. These follow quite naturally once the master version is given. We illustrate this expansion both for the valence quark distribution qV and for the transverse spin distribution h1.

Balance as a predictor of ankle injuries in high school basketball players.

The purpose of this study was to determine if a preseason measurement of balance while in a unilateral stance could predict susceptibility to ankle injury in a cohort of high school basketball players. Predicting risk for ankle injury could be important in helping to reduce the risk of these injuries and furthermore save health care costs. Cohort study. Data were collected at five high schools during the first 2 weeks of the 1997-1998 and 1998-1999 basketball seasons. 210 (119 male, age = 16.1 +/- 1.1 yr; height = 182.98 +/- 7.4 cm; weight = 76.4 +/- 10.9 kg; and 91 female, age = 16.3 +/- 1.3 yr; height = 170.9 +/- 7.8 cm; weight = 63.4 +/- 8.4 kg) high school basketball players who did not sustain a time loss ankle or knee injury within the previous 12 months served as subjects. Subjects did not use prophylactic ankle taping or bracing during the season. Balance was quantified from postural sway scores measured while subjects performed unilateral balance tests with eyes both open and closed. Logistic regression analysis was carried out to determine if gender, dominant leg, and balance scores were related to ankle sprain injuries. In addition, Fischer's exact test was used to determine if the rate of ankle injuries was the same whether the subject had poor, average, or good balance. Balance was assessed by measuring postural sway with the NeuroCom New Balance Master version 6.0 (NeuroCom International, Clackamas, OR, U.S.A.). Testing to determine postural sway consisted of having subjects stand on one leg for three trials of 10 seconds with their eyes open, then repeated with their eyes closed. Subjects then underwent the same assessment while standing on the other leg. Postural sway was defined as the average degrees of sway per second (degrees S/S) for the 12 trials producing a compilation (COMP) score. Ankle injury resulting in missed participation. Subjects who sustained ankle sprains had a preseason COMP score of 2.01 +/- 0.32 (Mean +/- SD), while athletes who did not sustain ankle injuries had a score of 1.74 +/- 0.31. Higher postural sway scores corresponded to increased ankle sprain injury rates (p = 0.001). Subjects who demonstrated poor balance (high sway scores) had nearly seven times as many ankle sprains as subjects who had good balance (low sway scores) (p = 0.0002.) In this cohort of high school basketball players, pre-season balance measurement (postural sway) served as a predictor of ankle sprain susceptibility.

Simulating synthetic polymer chains in parallel

We have investigated algorithms that are particularly suited for the parallel molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of synthetic polymers. These algorithms distribute the atoms of the polymer among the processors. Dynamic non-bonded interactions, which are the difficult part of an MD simulation, are realised with the help of a new coarse-grained representation of the chain structure. We have devised and compared a master version and a distributed version of the algorithm. Surprisingly, the master version is competitive for a relatively large number of processors. We also developed two methods to improve load balancing. The resulting simulation package will be made available in the near future.

Digital libraries, value, and productivity

A digital library is popularly viewed an electronic version of a public library. But replacing paper by electronic storage leads to three major differences: storage in digital form, direct communication to obtain material, and copying from a master version. These differences in turn lead to a plethora of further differences, so that eventually the digital library no longer mimics the traditional library. Furthermore, a library is only element in the process of creating, storing, culling, accessing, selecting, and distributing information to customers. While the technical focus of digital library research is on the central functions of storage and access, major changes will occur in the interaction within the new systems.

We published detailed field methods over a decade ago, but at that time, data were maintained in spreadsheet-like formats, most harboring design flaws that resulted in frequent errors. We since established detailed database methods and a normalized data model for housing multiple censuses of large plots. Our largest databases include >2 million measurements, and each has a master version on a server where all collaborators can access and edit data. This paper focuses on the data requirements for handling tree census data and how to design databases to meet these requirements and to ensure data integrity. There are six key elements of a tree census which the database must reflect: (1) measurements, including individual trees (genetic units), stems within trees, and multiple measurements of stems; both field and data methods must assure that every tree, stem, and measurement is precisely identified and can be relocated easily; (2) coordinates, including quadrats within a plot, because field mapping is usually done by assigning x–y coordinates relative to local quadrat markers; (3) taxonomy, carrying a species identity for every tree with a history of individual re-identifications; (4) personnel, with records of the people who performed field and data work per quadrat; (5) assessment of field error via random re-measurements; and (6) a log of changes and a system of archiving so that errors can be tracked and past versions can be reconstructed and cited in publications.
