This paper is premised on the idea that a different meaning or a different set of hermeneutic codes are detectable in Park Yong-han’s The Songba River Far Away than those attributed from a realistic perspective to the novel. It starts with charting the similarities and differences between Park’s novel and the so-called “victim discourse” commonly found in the American Vietnam War fiction, which is reputedly employed in order to exempt American GIs from the responsibilities for the horrendous war crimes. This paper then proceeds to focus on what it deems to be two crucial episodes in the novel in order to tease out alternative meanings from the text. One such episode is found in the relationship between the South Korean patient soldiers and master sergeant Oh, the virtual ruler of the army clinic camp in Vietnam, which this research approaches as an allegory. The other is the Christmas party held at Lang’s mansion in Nha Trang. This paper recovers a critique of the US-led world order or a critical consciousness within the novel by reading the two episodes in relation to the South Korean politics of the time and the postwar international relations.

A Case Study of Cognitive Processing Therapy for a Military Medic With Posttraumatic Stress Disorder.

Cognitive processing therapy (CPT) is an effective treatment for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in the active duty and veteran population. This case study provides a thorough example of the use of this therapeutic modality with an active duty military service member who was exposed to several traumatic events. Over the course of 13 sessions, "Master Sergeant Smith," a middle-aged, White male, made significant progress on his treatment plan goals and reductions in PTSD symptoms. This case study describes the theoretical and research basis for treatment and course of treatment and illustrates the use of CPT in an outpatient setting while describing important areas of focus and how to overcome clinical challenges.

이슈리더십과 성과 간의 관계에서 상사지원의 조절효과 검증 -팀원의 이슈리더십을 중심으로-

전통적인 리더십 이론들은 공식적 권한을 가진 직책자를 리더로 전제해 왔다. 그러나 최근의 경영환경은 비직책자인 팀원도 리더십을 발휘해야하는 상황에 있다. 이에 본 연구에서는 팀원의 리더십과 그 효과성을 검증하고자 했다. 또한 팀원의 이슈리더십 행동의 강도를 조절하는 요인으로서 상사지원의 조절효과를 검증하였다. 분석결과 비직책자인 팀원의 이슈리더십은 오디언스의 리더수용과 팀 성과에 정(+)의 영향을 미는 것으로 나타났다. 그러나 팀원의 이슈리더십과 리더수용 간의 상사지원의 조절효과는 통계적으로 유의하지 않았고 이슈리더십과 팀 성과 간의 상사지원 조절효과는 부(-)적인 관계임을 새로 발견 했다. 본 연구는 팀원의 리더십과 그 효과성을 실증하고, 일반적인 기대와는 달리 상사의 지원이 오히려 팀원의 리더십 발휘를 저해하는 요인임을 발견하였다는 것에 의의가 있다. Until now most of the leadership studies have been focused to managers having in formal authority. However, in the recent business environment, team member should also demonstrate his leadership. Hence, the purpose of this study has been focused to the team member's leadership and their leadership effectiveness. In this study, we verified how the degree of master sergeant's support can control to moderate the intensity of the team member's leadership behavior. The analysis results were as follows: we have found that team member's issue leadership can effect on positive(+) way on the audience's acceptance to the leader as well as team performance. But the moderating effects of master sergeant's support on the team member's issue leadership and leader acceptance was not significant in terms of statistical point of view. It has also shown even the negative(-) effects of master sergeants's support on the team member's issue leadership and leader acceptance as well as team performance. Through this study, we can understand that the master sergeant's support may impeding the team member's independent leadership.

Crime and punishment in Liberia

Concern about the growing number of blacks and freed slaves in the United States led the American Colonization Society (with assistance from British colonial officials in Sierra Leone) to re-settle former slaves in what became known as Liberia (“Land of the Free”). Ironically, the government established by the Americo-Liberians following independence in 1847, denied indigenous Liberians (who comprised about 95% of the population of the new republic), the same rights they themselves were denied in America. Many years of prejudice, discrimination, exploitation, oppression, and other forms of social and economic injustices perpetrated against indigenous Liberians by successive Americo-Liberian government culminated in the April 12, 1980 coup d'etat, carried out by Master Sergeant Samuel Doe. This paper discusses the problem of crime and punishment in Liberia before the coup d'etat and after, during the fourteen years of civil wars which followed the coup d'etat, and during the immediate period following the return to civilian rule in 2004. The study reveals that non-enforcement of existing laws coupled with racial/ethnic and gender discrimination were a problem in the country and continues to be. The study further reveals that rapes and other forms of sexual violence, mass killings and extra-judicial executions targeting specific ethnic groups, harassment and illegal arrests and detention, lootings, armed robberies, and ritualistic killings were common during the civil wars. Available information also indicate that sex with young children has continued in post civil war Liberia along with increased incidence of prostitution, domestic violence, human trafficking, and drug trafficking mainly due to lack of enforcement of existing laws.

Fred Friendly's experience as a master sergeant in the Information and Education Section of the China-Burma-India (CBI) Theater during World War II served as a laboratory for his post-war career in broadcast journalism at CBS, the Ford Foundation, and Columbia University. At CBI, he engaged in troop education and made wire recordings of air and ground combat for the Armed Forces Radio Network, and he also reported from the eastern and western fronts for the army newspaper CBI Roundup. During this period, he developed skills and qualities that showed up in his subsequent career as a pioneer of television journalism. This article draws upon the author's interviews with wartime associates as well as Friendly's private papers, which were recently transferred to the Rare Book and Manuscript Library at Columbia University.

A case of rheumatoid arthritis and anthrax vaccination

Rationale To report a new association of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) following anthrax vaccination. Methods A 42 year old Caucasian Avionics Master Sergeant with history of arrhythmia after ASD repair developed stiffness followed by pain of his knees and all proximal interphalangeal (PIP) joints starting day 5 after the first anthrax vaccine dose. Chills, fever, joint and neck pain with nodule at injection site occurred with Dose 2. Dose 3 associated with fever, chills, nausea, vomiting, neck, hand, and shoulder pain. Doses 2 and 3 were coupled with Typhoid Vi and Yellow Fever respectively with no known prior adverse reaction to either vaccine. Symptoms of pain and stiffness persisted for 9 months with anorexia and 6.8 kg weight loss. Vaccination was terminated after the third dose. Results Physical exam revealed swelling of bilateral PIP joints with presence of Bouchard's nodules. CBC was normal, Rheumatoid Factor 198, ESR 53, ANA negative, CRP 2.7, anti CCP antibody 168 (detected by ELISA, indicates recent onset of RA). X Rays reveal mild degenerative changes of hands and knees bilaterally. Conclusions Anthrax Vaccine was licensed in 1970 and is currently used to protect against biological warfare. No prior association with RA has been documented. Predictable reactions include skin redness, swelling at the injection site with rare malaise, arthralgia, and myalgia. Anti Squalene antibodies (ASA), an experimental vaccine adjuvant found in some anthrax vaccines has been implicated in Gulf War Syndrome characterized by multisystemic symptoms, and autoimmune diseases in experimental animals. Further studies are required to implicate ASA with RA.

In 1953, Ingelfinger and Kramer, and later Schatzki and Gary, described a ringlike narrowing of the lower esophagus which produced dysphagia. 1,2 Since then, several other similar cases have been described. Here is another case report of this peculiar entity. Report of a Case A 43-year-old master sergeant was admitted to the U.S. Army Hospital, Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., on Dec. 11, 1958. For six months prior to admission he complained of intermittent, sudden, substernal pain while eating solids. The dysphagia varied from a dull ache to a sharp lancinating pain. It never lasted more than a few minutes. The patient felt relief immediately when the bolus seemed to pass an obstructed area. He would regurgitate voluntarily if the bolus did not pass promptly.
