Environmental impacts, specifically noise, have been observed in the areas surrounding the Corfu International Airport due to the airport operation and the road traffic. The impacts are particularly noticeable during the summer tourist season. Approximately 1,9 million passengers were served in 2000, and the number is expected to exceed 3 million in 2020. Major construction and intervention works are under way at the airport and surrounding areas under the airport's Master Plan design. This paper estimates and assesses the air and road traffic noise pollution impacts on the surrounding area of the airport and on the urban complex of Corfu city to the design year 2020. Proposed are special measures regarding operational procedures, road schemes and compatible land uses for the purpose of achieving a well integrated and environmentally acceptable solution for the total system: airport, airport road access, and the surrounding urban area.
