The Spillover Effect of Stock Market Sentiment Intensity and Uncertainty on Housing Market in the United States

Investor sentiment is a key indicator of market performance. Many have studied how investor sentiment affects market returns or returns of different categories of stocks. Besides, many also studied how information revealed in media can affect the housing market. This paper focuses on the sentiment revealed in social media, Tweet, by combining these two key factors that have not been studied. This paper studies the spillover effect of stock market sentiment on the housing market by applying Vector Autoregression. The VAR model helps explain the relationship between housing prices and stock market sentiment from tweets, where sentiments are divided into sentiment intensity and sentiment uncertainty. The series of sentiment intensity and series of housing prices interact with each other, and the change in sentiment in the last period spills over to the housing market which affects housing prices, but the change in housing price does not affect sentiment in reverse. Similarly, the series of sentiment uncertainty and the series of housing prices interact with each other, and the change in sentiment diversity in the last period also spills over to the housing market which affects housing prices, but the change in housing price does not affect sentiment in reverse.

Born Global Maturity: Strategic Aspects and Performance Consequences

AbstractBorn global firms (BGs) contribute significantly to economic growth, but few studies have examined the post-internationalization stage of BGs. In addition, studies of the impact of changes in strategic aspects as BGs mature on BG performance and survival have yielded conflicting results. To address this gap in knowledge, the present study examines the relationships between intelligence generation and innovation orientation, and branding strategies as moderated by maturity. The data were received from 133 senior managers of BGs of various ages. The analysis shows that BG maturity negatively moderates the relationship between intelligence generation and functional branding strategy but does not influence the relationships of innovation orientation with branding strategies. Furthermore, emotional branding showed stable association with both financial and market performance indicators. This study demonstrates that maturity affects the orientations and performance of BGs and calls for a reassessment of the competitive international strategy of BGs at the post-entry stage.

Relationship Between Sex-Specific Labor Market Performance and Breastfeeding Prevalence.

Prior research has explored the association between women's employment status and breastfeeding at the individual level, however; a notable gap in scholarly inquiry exists regarding the relationship between labor market performance and breastfeeding at the population level. The aim of this paper is to investigate the association between labor market performance and breastfeeding prevalence in the United States. This study is a cross-sectional analysis of the association between labor market performance and the prevalence of breastfeeding. Our analysis is conducted at the state level using data published up to late 2021 from the Current Population Survey and the National Immunization Survey. The first dataset was used to construct aggregate and sex-specific state level indicators of labor market performance for both males and females. The second dataset supplied the proportion of mothers breastfeeding for the corresponding birth cohort from each state. Higher average weekly hours worked by females in the year before giving birth was associated with a lower prevalence of breastfeeding, but employment rates among females did not significantly affect breastfeeding prevalence. Among males, current employment rates were positively associated with breastfeeding prevalence; however, no significant relationship was observed between breastfeeding prevalence and average weekly work hours worked. Sex-specific labor market performance may play a role in breastfeeding decisions and the timing of labor market performance relative to childbirth is important. Furthermore, these results highlight that employment rates and hours worked might be associated with child health through breastfeeding prevalence.

Proposed Performance Management System Using Kbpms Framework At PT. Kita Bersama

In Indonesia, company performance measurement is regulated by standards such as Financial Accounting Standards (SAK) published by the Indonesian Accountants Association (IAI). PT Kita Bersama, which operates in the direct sales sector, has experienced a decline in revenue in the last 5 years. One of the causes is the absence of clear performance indicators for employees so that they work without adequate targets and control. Therefore, this thesis research aims to propose the implementation of an integrated performance management system at PT Kita Bersamawith a focus on product marketing and Key Performance Indicators (KPI). The result is 23 KPIs derived from the company's strategy and business processes to carry out more comprehensive performance measurement and evaluation. Furthermore, the Knowledge Based Performance Management System (KBPMS) is designed to overcome various company challenges related to data integration, employee involvement, alignment of activities with vision and mission, and performance management. KBPMS is also based on five principles to simplify operations, increase efficiency, and drive sustainable growth of the company. By implementing this knowledge management system, it is hoped that company performance can be improved in a structured manner according to long-term targets.

A Consumer Behavior Analysis Framework toward Improving Market Performance Indicators: Saudi’s Retail Sector as a Case Study

Studying customer behavior and anticipating future trends is a challenging task, as customer behavior is complex and constantly evolving. To effectively anticipate future trends, businesses need to analyze large amounts of data, use sophisticated analytical techniques, and stay up-to-date with the latest research and industry trends. In this paper, we propose a comprehensive framework to identify trends in consumer behavior using multiple layers of processing, including clustering, classification, and association rule learning. The aim is to help a major retailer in Saudi Arabia better understand customer behavior by utilizing the power of big data analysis. The proposed framework is presented as being generalized to gain insight into the generated big data and enable data-driven decision-making in other relevant domains. We developed this framework in collaboration with a large supermarket chain in Saudi Arabia, which provided us with over 1,000,000 sales transaction records belonging to around 30,000 of their loyal customers. In this study, we apply our proposed framework to those data as a case study and present our initial results of consumer clustering and association rules for each cluster. Moreover, we analyze our findings to figure out how we can further utilize intelligence to predict customer behavior in clustered groups.

Analysis of Risk Characterization and Identification Techniques for Electricity Spot Settlement Based on Multilayer Perceptron Machine

Abstract In this paper, the structural characteristics of the perceptron neural network and the calculation method of the hierarchical relationship of the MLP neural network model are first studied. Then the aspects of two-part settlement, generation-side settlement, and customer-side settlement in the electricity spot settlement mechanism are studied, and the importance of these mechanisms for the operation of the electricity market and risk identification is pointed out. Following that, the effectiveness of the risk identification model is assessed and analyzed. This paper examines market performance indicators, the impact of the dual-track mechanism, and the time characteristics of the price index to characterize risk. The results show that in Guangdong, for example, the price in the day-ahead market is much higher than the supply-demand equilibrium price most of the time, and the maximum difference can be as high as 0.662 yuan/(kW-h). For the entire month, the real-time market’s average price is RMB 0.546/(kW-h) and it is RMB 0.063/(kW-h) higher than the day-ahead market. The importance of this study lies in its role in managing and responding to risks for electricity market operators and participants.

Performance of the Equities and Bond Markets in Nigeria: A Comparative Investigation

This work comparatively examined the performance of the Nigerian equities and bond markets vis-à-vis the output of the Nigerian economy from 1987 – 2019. Number of listed securities, number of deals, value of deals and market capitalization were the market performance indicators considered, while real GDP was used to measure output of the Nigerian economy. Data for the study were sourced from Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Statistical bulletins. The data generated for the study were subjected to stationarity test using ADF criterion, co-integration test using bounds approach, and diagnostic tests which covered testing for the presence of serial correlation, heteroscedasticity and distribution of the error term. Stationarity test result revealed that all the variables were integrated of order zero or one. Co-integration test result showed that a long-run relationship exists between the variables. Diagnostic test results indicated that both models were not serially correlated while the variances of the random variables were not heteroscedastic. However, the errors of the models were not normally distributed. Nevertheless, the ARDL model for parameter estimation process revealed that lagged real GDP, number and value of deals in the equities market have positive relationships with current period real GDP; while number of listed securities and market capitalization has negative relationships with real GDP. Additionally, only number of listed securities and number of deals in the equities market were statistically significant. In the bond market, all the variables except number of listed securities have positive relationships with real GDP, but none of the considered market performance indicators was statistically significant in the market. Analysis of the contribution of IFRS to improving the relevance of financial performance measures: A comparative study with Moroccan Accounting Standards

The implementation of the international accounting framework has led to a new philosophy of estimating and valuing the financial performance of companies. In this respect, the accounting indicators derived from financial statements constitute the classic measures of performance evaluation, such as ROE, ROA, BPA, and Payout. However, their usefulness is contested in the face of market-based indicators like TSR, MVA, PBR, and dividend yield. This paper aims to assess the effect of adopting IFRS on the relevance of financial performance measures through a comparative approach with Moroccan GAAP. At the empirical level, the use of multiple regressions on panel data remains strongly solicited to test the informational relevance of these indicators. In number, there are 115 observations collected from IFRS-adopting companies and 418 observations from non-adopting companies over the period 2013–2022. The study revealed a significant impact of the adoption of IFRS on the informational relevance of accounting indicators (adjusted R2(IFRS) = 71.12% against adjusted R2(Moroccan GAAP) = 55.03%). However, this study found a less significant effect of IFRS on the degree of relevance of stock market performance indicators (adjusted R2 (IFRS) = 50.36% versus adjusted R2(Moroccan GAAP) = 63.84 %). The study also showed a significant effect of IFRS on the complementarity between accounting and stock market performance indicators to explain the total shareholder return (adjusted R2(IFRS) = 69.02% against adjusted R2(Moroccan GAAP) = 58.01%).

Linking social media marketing to restaurant performance – the moderating role of advertising expenditure

PurposeBuilt upon customer engagement marketing theory and uses and gratification theory, this study examines the link between individual social media marketing (SMM) performance indicators and restaurant sales performance at the firm level. Moreover, the study investigates the moderating effect of advertising expenditure on this proposed relationship.Design/methodology/approachRandom effect regression models were developed in Stata to examine the associations between SMM performance indicators, advertising expenditure, and restaurant firm revenue. Twelve years of SMM data from brands' Facebook pages were collected with a web scraper built in Python. Natural language processing was used to analyze the sentiment of user-generated content (UGC).FindingsThe results suggest that restaurant annual sales revenue increases as the volume of brand posts, “like”s, “share”s and positive comments on restaurants' Facebook pages increase. However, the total number of comments and the number of negative comments show non-significant associations with revenue. Firm advertising expenditure negatively moderates the relationships between sales revenue and the number of “like”s, “share”s, total comments and positive comments.Practical implicationsRestaurants benefit from making frequent posts on SNSs. Promotions that motivate online users to “like”, share, and comment on brand posts should be implemented. Firms with limited advertising budgets are encouraged to actively create buzz on SNSs due to evidenced stronger effects of UGC on sales performance than large advertisers.Originality/valueThis research bridges the gap by studying the effects of individual SMM performance indicators on restaurant financial outcomes. The findings support the effectiveness of SMM; and, for the first time, demonstrate that SMM could generate a more profound impact for firms with low advertising budgets.

The Role of Customer Engagement in Sustaining Subjective Well-being After a Travel Experience: Findings From a Three-Wave Study

Although customer engagement’s (CE) effects on marketing-related outcomes are well documented, its broader impacts on life domain constructs (e.g., subjective well-being [SWB]) have received less attention. We propose CE as a viable mechanism for prolonging travel’s positive effects on SWB. Specifically, this study adopts a three-wave design to investigate the linkages between destination brand experience (DBE), CE, and SWB over time. Our results indicate that sensory destination experience ( t1) and affective destination experience ( t1) stimulated CE with a destination ( t2), which contributed significantly to SWB ( t3). Findings from this longitudinal study contribute to the literature by demonstrating that CE significantly mediates the effects of the sensory and affective dimensions of DBE on tourists’ SWB over time. The study highlights the importance of CE beyond key marketing performance indicators.

A target model for the Russian insurance market development: Customer-centric transformation and best practices of foreign countries

Subject. This article examines the indicators of the Russian insurance market and the key problems of its functioning. Objectives. The article aims to analyze the indicators of the Russian insurance market for 2005–2022, identify the key problems of its functioning, build a target model of market development based on the practices of foreign insurance markets, develop a set of recommendations to solve the identified problems and assess the potential effectiveness of the proposed measures by forecasting and modeling market performance indicators in the long term as a result of the implementation of the developed recommendations. Methods. For the study, I used a content analysis, correlation and regression analysis, and the expert assessment method. Results. The article finds that the key problems of the Russian insurance market functioning are due to the high level of its operating costs, which is largely a consequence of the dependence of the insurance market on the banking sector. The article proposes certain measures, including legislative reforms aimed at strengthening regulation in the field of consumer protection and regulation of types of insurance, as well as a number of measures for implementation at the level of insurance companies. The article also presents the author-developed forecasting models regarding the transformation of the market by 2027. Conclusions. To improve the efficiency of the Russian insurance market, it is necessary to implement a set of measures for its customer-centric transformation, taking into account the best practices of foreign insurance markets.

Tourist co-creation and tourism marketing outcomes: An inverted U-shaped relationship

Extant literature typically advocates a positive linear relationship between a myriad of tourist co-creation behaviors and tourism business performance. This study challenges this conventional wisdom by probing the potential curvilinear effects of tourist co-creation on tourism marketing outcomes. The findings across three experiments manifest an inverted U-shaped relationship between the degree of tourist co-creation and an array of tourism marketing performance indicators comprising liking, participation, and recommendation intention. Furthermore, the results reveal that tourist experiential fluency may positively moderate this relationship, thereby offering measures to mitigate the negative impacts of excessive tourist co-creation on the ultimate tourism marketing outputs. This research makes theoretical contributions by cautioning against the possibility of value co-destruction and puts forward practical suggestions for tourism marketers to better manage the tourist co-creation process.

The Impact of Accounting Disclosure through Social Media on Reducing Information Gap: A Field Study in Companies on the Iraqi Stock Exchange

The study aimed to investigate the impact of accounting disclosure through social media on reducing the information gap between investors. The study adopted a descriptive-analytical approach, and the population of the study consisted of 47 companies listed on the Iraqi stock exchange. The study sample consisted of 161 employees working in these companies. The study found that accounting disclosure through social media is important and plays a role in reducing the information gap for users. The field study showed that there is a significant relationship between accounting disclosure through social media and the reduction of the information gap in the Iraqi stock market. The study recommended the disclosure of future expectations regarding opportunities or risks resulting from positive or negative trends in financial and market performance indicators through social media platforms. This is important in providing stakeholders with clearer and more impactful information than that provided through mandatory disclosure. The study also recommended improving the credibility of financial reports in line with market expectations, especially when negative predictions arise regarding the companys future performance.

A Mycorrhizal Model for Transactive Solar Energy Markets with Battery Storage

Distributed market structures for local, transactive energy trading can be modeled with ecological systems, such as mycorrhizal networks, which have evolved to facilitate interplant carbon exchange in forest ecosystems. However, the complexity of these ecological systems can make it challenging to understand the effect that adopting these models could have on distributed energy systems and the magnitude of associated performance parameters. We therefore simplified and implemented a previously developed blueprint for mycorrhizal energy market models to isolate the effect of the mycorrhizal intervention in allowing buildings to redistribute portions of energy assets on competing local, decentralized marketplaces. Results indicate that the applied mycorrhizal intervention only minimally affects market and building performance indicators—increasing market self-consumption, decreasing market self-sufficiency, and decreasing building weekly savings across all seasonal (winter, fall, summer) and typological (residential, mixed-use) cases when compared to a fixed, retail feed-in-tariff market structure. The work concludes with a discussion of opportunities for further expansion of the proposed mycorrhizal market framework through reinforcement learning as well as limitations and policy recommendations considering emerging aggregated distributed energy resource (DER) access to wholesale energy markets.

The question of the functional organization of the interfaces of end-user interaction with the «Equant Cloud» computer system is considered. On the basis of the analysis of the technologi-cal process of its functioning in order to ensure the performance of the functions of preparation, carrying out calculations of activity options on the electric energy market and processing data of calculation results, the main typical operations were formulated, which include: making changes to calculation algorithms; collection and preparation of raw data; conducting calcula-tions of electricity market performance indicators; formation of reporting data with the results of calculations and their presentation in visual form; performance of visual data analysis and mon-itoring of calculation results. Examples of user interfaces are provided.

From customer intelligence to sustainability: management feature of SMEs in Almaty City

ABSTRACT The aim of this study is to obtain data on the perception and use level of customer intelligence (CI) tools, including customer database, customer journey map, customer feedback from Kazakhstan’s small and medium-sized enterprises (SME). Furthermore, this study aims to examine the impact of these tools on the marketing activity effectiveness through indicators of marketing performance, and, as a result, on the SME’s sustainability in Kazakhstan. Expert interviews (owners and managers of middle and top levels) with 25 Kazakhstani companies and a literature review are conducted to achieve the research objectives. This research presents how SME experts understand and apply CI features, estimate the potential and probability of changes and the agents restraining these changes in marketing activities from the CI lens, and enumerate marketing and business performance indicators. Based on the findings, the model of SMEs’ value and the importance of CI applications in marketing activity is created and presented.

Environmental, social and governance performance: influence on market value in the COVID-19 crisis

PurposeThe aim of this paper is to study whether adoption of sustainability policies by firms makes their stock market performance resilient to the downside risk during the crisis period.Design/methodology/approachThe paper empirically examines the relationship between environmental, social and governance (ESG) and stock market performance for Indian companies that have consistently been a part of Refinitiv Eikon ESG database. Further, the study examines whether there exist significant differences in stock market performance of high ESG and low ESG-compliant firms during crisis period. The sample was made up of 70 Indian firms studied over the period 2016–2019 defined as “normal period” as well as for the declared COVID-19 crisis period, i.e. January–March 2020, and full year 2020. The authors used multivariate panel data regression, robust least square multivariate regression, pooled OLS model and two-stage least square regression method.FindingsThe study extends the existing literature by investigating the impact of ESG performance on market value of firms during the crisis period. Based on the stakeholder and “flight to safety” theory, the authors hypothesized that ESG would have significant positive effect on the stock market performance during crisis period; however, the results provide robust evidence that in a well-specified model capturing the effect of accounting-based measures of performance, Size, Growth, Risk and Dividend yield, ESG had no explanatory power over the stock market performance of ESG-compliant firms during crisis period. Furthermore, no significant difference in stock market performance indicators between high and low ESG-compliant firms was observed during the crisis period of 1Q2020 as well as for full year 2020. On contrary, the study finds dividend yield to be statistically significant in determining stock market performance of Indian firms during crisis period. The study extends the existing literature by coining the term, “ESG irrelevance” during crisis period.Research limitations/implicationsThe main limitation of this study is its limited sample size because there are very few Indian firms that have secured consistent ESG rating. The study focuses on consistently rated firms to avoid the impact of “greenwashing”. Further, the study is focused on India, which limits the generalizability of our findings to other emerging countries.Originality/valueTo the best of our knowledge, this is among the first few studies that examines sustainability and stock market performance of Indian firms during COVID-19-led crisis period. Our findings highlight no significant difference between stock market performance of high ESG firms and low ESG firms indicating that investors who wish to create wealth by investing in ESG-compliant stocks in India can do so without worrying about the companies’ ESG rating scores.

The relationships between Canadian firms' lobbying activities and their market and accounting performance

The main objectives are to highlight the nature and scope of lobbying activities carried out by Canadian firms, and analyse the link between these activities and firm market and accounting performance indicators. Data on companies listed on the S&P/TSX index were analysed, covering the period from 2009 to 2018, inclusive. The main findings show that 26.6% of the firms under study have engaged in lobbying, with this proportion consisting, on average, of larger firms. The two industries at the forefront of these activities were mining, oil and gas, and manufacturing. Most of the lobbying activities under study focused on economic and multiple issues. While bivariate analyses (ANOVA and correlations) show that these activities in their scope and nature are significantly related to market and accounting performance indicators, multivariate GLM analyses demonstrate that only the variable 'number of salaried lobbyists' is positively and significantly linked to accounting and market performance indicators.

Measuring the financial performance of insurance companies during the financial crisis

Assessing the financial performance of insurance firms during periods of global economic difficulty has been a topic of great importance to the insurance industry. Interest in sound finance practices peaked in the years following the recession of 2008. Yet, there has been relatively little analysis of the UAE insurance industry and its performance during the financial crisis.The aim of this study is to measure the financial performance of three insurance companies operating in United Arab Emirates during the financial years 2006 to 2009, with the specific goal being to measure the impact of the financial crisis on performance. The analysis examines company performance on key performance indicators such as profitability, liquidity, capital structure and market performance indicators over the years 2006 to 2009. The findings show generally high levels of instability for profitability indicators. Regarding both liquidity and capital structure indicators, the firms in question experienced lower levels of variability and instability across the board. Performance on the earnings per share measure experienced a higher level of volatility, in contrast to the market value per share indicator which remained relatively stable throughout the period in question. Furthermore, profitability levels showed a systemic & notable decline in the crisis year 2008.

Digital Marketing Strategies and Marketing Performance of Private Secondary Schools in Port Harcourt, Nigeria

The study examined the relationship between digital marketing strategies and marketing performance of private secondary schools in Port Harcourt. The population of the study comprises of two hundred and fourteen (214) registered private secondary schools in Port Harcourt (Rivers State Yellow Page Directory, 2014/2015). Considering the need for precision and elimination of unnecessary biases on the sample size determination, the taro yamen formula was used to determine elements of the population, which is one hundred and thirty-nine (139) private schools in Port Harcourt. The study adopted the simple random sampling techniques, while the Pearson product moment correlation coefficient (PPMCC) assisted by the statistical package for social sciences (SPSS) Version 21.0 was used in testing the hypotheses. Two copies of the questionnaire were administered to each of the one hundred and thirty-nine (139), private secondary schools in Port Harcourt, totalling two hundred and seventy-eight (278) copies of questionnaire. Of the two hundred and seventy-eight (278) copies of the questionnaire that were distributed, two hundred and fifty-nine (259) copies representing 93.2% were retrieved and nineteen (19) which represents 6.8% were not retrieved. The study revealed that there is strong and positive relationship between digital marketing strategies and marketing performance of private secondary schools in Port Harcourt. The study further concludes that the dimensions of digital marketing strategies impacts marketing performance indicators. The study however recommends that private secondary schools in Port Harcourt should be more accustomed to the latest technology in the educational sector to be at par with international standards and to compete favourably on the international scene.
