Calculations with spectroscopic accuracy for energies, transition rates, hyperfine interaction constants, and Landé gJ-factors in nitrogen-like Kr XXX

Extensive self-consistent multi-configuration Dirac-Fock (MCDF) calculations and second-order many-body perturbation theory (MBPT) calculations are performed for the lowest 272 states belonging to the 2s22p3, 2s2p4, 2p5, 2s22p23l, and 2s2p33l (l=s, p, d) configurations of N-like Kr XXX. Complete and consistent data sets of level energies, wavelengths, line strengths, oscillator strengths, lifetimes, AJ, BJ hyperfine interaction constants, Landé gJ-factors, and electric dipole (E1), magnetic dipole (M1), electric quadrupole (E2), magnetic quadrupole (M2) transition rates among all these levels are given. The present MCDF and MBPT results are compared with each other and with other available experimental and theoretical results. The mean relative difference between our two sets of level energies is only about 0.003% for these 272 levels. The accuracy of the present calculations are high enough to facilitate identification of many observed spectral lines. These accurate data can be served as benchmark for other calculations and can be useful for fusion plasma research and astrophysical applications.

Theoretical predictions on efficiency of bi-exciton formation and dissociation in chiral carbon nanotubes.

Efficient multiple exciton generation (MEG) in chiral single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) is present within the solar spectrum range as shown by the many-body perturbation theory calculations combined with the density functional theory simulations. To describe the impact ionization process, we calculate exciton-to-biexciton decay rates R1→2 and biexciton-to-exciton rates R2→1 in the (6,2) and (10,5) SWCNTs. Within the solar energy range, we predict R1→2 ∼ 1014 s-1, while biexciton-to-exciton recombination is weak with R2→1/R1→2 ≤ 10-2. Also we calculate quantum efficiency (QE), the average number of excitons created by a single absorbed photon, for which we find QE ≃ 1.2-1.6, that is 20%-60%. However, MEG strength in these SWCNTs varies strongly with the excitation energy due to highly non-uniform density of states at the low energy. We hypothesize that MEG efficiency in the chiral SWCNTs can be enhanced by altering the low-energy electronic spectrum via surface functionalization, or by mixing SWCNTs of different chiralities.

Ab initionuclear many-body perturbation calculations in the Hartree-Fock basis

Starting from realistic nuclear forces, the chiral N$^3$LO and JISP16, we have applied many-body perturbation theory (MBPT) to the structure of closed-shell nuclei, $^4$He and $^{16}$O. The two-body N$^3$LO interaction is softened by a similarity renormalization group transformation while JISP16 is adopted without renormalization. The MBPT calculations are performed within the Hartree-Fock (HF) bases. The angular momentum coupled scheme is used, which can reduce the computational task. Corrections up to the third order in energy and up to the second order in radius are evaluated. Higher-order corrections in the HF basis are small relative to the leading-order perturbative result. Using the anti-symmetrized Goldstone diagram expansions of the wave function, we directly correct the one-body density for the calculation of the radius, rather than calculate corrections to the occupation propabilities of single-particle orbits as found in other treatments. We compare our results with other methods where available and find good agreement. This supports the conclusion that our methods produce reasonably converged results with these interactions. We also compare our results with experimental data.

Band Gaps of the Lead-Free Halide Double Perovskites Cs2BiAgCl6 and Cs2BiAgBr6 from Theory and Experiment.

The recent discovery of lead-free halide double perovskites with band gaps in the visible represents an important step forward in the design of environmentally friendly perovskite solar cells. Within this new family of semiconductors, Cs2BiAgCl6 and Cs2BiAgBr6 are stable compounds crystallizing in the elpasolite structure. Following the recent computational discovery and experimental synthesis of these compounds, a detailed investigation of their electronic properties is warranted in order to establish their potential as optoelectronic materials. In this work, we perform many-body perturbation theory calculations and obtain high accuracy band gaps for both compounds. In addition, we report on the synthesis of Cs2BiAgBr6 single crystals, which are stable in ambient conditions. From our complementary theoretical and experimental analysis, we are able to assign the indirect character of the band gaps and obtain both experimental and theoretical band gaps of these novel semiconductors that are in close agreement.

Electronic and optical properties of hexathiapentacene in the gas and crystal phases

Using density functional theory (DFT) and its time-dependent (TD) extension, the electronic and optical properties of the hexathiapentacene (HTP) molecule, a derivative of pentacene (PNT) obtained by symmetric substitution of the six central H atoms with S atoms, are investigated for its gas and solid phases. For the molecular structure, all-electron calculations are performed using a Gaussian localized orbital basis set in conjunction with the Becke three-parameter Lee-Yang-Parr (B3LYP) hybrid exchange-correlation functional. Electron affinities, ionization energies, quasiparticle energy gaps, optical absorption spectra, and exciton binding energies are calculated and compared with the corresponding results for PNT, as well as with the available experimental data. The DFT and TDDFT results are also validated by performing many-body perturbation theory calculations within the $GW$ and Bethe-Salpeter equation formalisms. The functionalization with S atoms induces an increase of both ionization energies and electron affinities, a sizable reduction of the fundamental electronic gap, and a redshift of the optical absorption onset. Notably, the intensity of the first absorption peak of HTP falling in the visible region is found to be nearly tripled with respect to the pure PNT molecule. For the crystal structures, pseudopotential calculations are adopted using a plane-wave basis set together with the Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof exchange-correlation functional empirically corrected in order to take dispersive interactions into account. The electronic excitations are also obtained within a perturbative B3LYP scheme. A comparative analysis is carried out between the ground-state and excited-state properties of crystalline HTP and PNT linking to the findings obtained for the isolated molecules.

Giant edge state splitting at atomically precise graphene zigzag edges.

Zigzag edges of graphene nanostructures host localized electronic states that are predicted to be spin-polarized. However, these edge states are highly susceptible to edge roughness and interaction with a supporting substrate, complicating the study of their intrinsic electronic and magnetic structure. Here, we focus on atomically precise graphene nanoribbons whose two short zigzag edges host exactly one localized electron each. Using the tip of a scanning tunnelling microscope, the graphene nanoribbons are transferred from the metallic growth substrate onto insulating islands of NaCl in order to decouple their electronic structure from the metal. The absence of charge transfer and hybridization with the substrate is confirmed by scanning tunnelling spectroscopy, which reveals a pair of occupied/unoccupied edge states. Their large energy splitting of 1.9 eV is in accordance with ab initio many-body perturbation theory calculations and reflects the dominant role of electron–electron interactions in these localized states.

Greatly Enhanced Optical Absorption of a Defective MoS2 Monolayer through Oxygen Passivation.

Structural defects in the molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) monolayer are widely reported and greatly degrade the transport and photoluminescence. However, how they influence the optical absorption properties remains unclear. In this work, by employing many-body perturbation theory calculations, we investigate the influence of sulfur vacancies (SVs), the main type of intrinsic defects in the MoS2 monolayer, on the optical absorption and exciton effect. Our calculations reveal that the presence of SVs creates localized midgap states in the bandgap, which results in a dramatic red-shift of the absorption peak and stronger absorbance in the visible light and near-infrared region. Nevertheless, the SVs can be finely repaired by oxygen passivation and are beneficial to the formation of the stable localized excitons, which greatly enhance the optical absorption in the spectral range. The defect-mediated/-engineered absorption mechanism is well understood, which offers insightful guides for improving the performance of two-dimensional dichalcogenide-based optoelectronic devices.

Energy level alignment of self-assembled linear chains of benzenediamine on Au(111) from first principles

Using density functional theory (DFT) with a van der Waals density functional, we calculate the adsorption energetics and geometry of benzenediamine (BDA) molecules on Au(111) surfaces. Our results demonstrate that the reported self-assembled linear chain structure of BDA, stabilized via hydrogen bonds between amine groups, is energetically favored over previously studied monomeric phases. Moreover, using a model, which includes nonlocal polarization effects from the substrate and the neighboring molecules and incorporates many-body perturbation theory calculations within the GW approximation, we obtain approximate self-energy corrections to the DFT highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) energy associated with BDA adsorbate phases. We find that, independent of coverage, the HOMO energy of the linear chain phase is lower relative to the Fermi energy than that of the monomer phase, and in good agreement with values measured with ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy.

Hartree–Fock many-body perturbation theory for nuclear ground-states

We investigate the order-by-order convergence behavior of many-body perturbation theory (MBPT) as a simple and efficient tool to approximate the ground-state energy of closed-shell nuclei. To address the convergence properties directly, we explore perturbative corrections up to 30th order and highlight the role of the partitioning for convergence. The use of a simple Hartree-Fock solution to construct the unperturbed basis leads to a convergent MBPT series for soft interactions, in contrast to, e.g., a harmonic oscillator basis. For larger model spaces and heavier nuclei, where a direct high-order MBPT calculation in not feasible, we perform third-order calculation and compare to advanced ab initio coupled-cluster calculations for the same interactions and model spaces. We demonstrate that third-order MBPT provides ground-state energies for nuclei up into tin isotopic chain that are in excellent agreement with the best available coupled-cluster results at a fraction of the computational cost.

Interface-Induced Renormalization of Electrolyte Energy Levels in Magnesium Batteries.

A promising strategy for increasing the energy density of Li-ion batteries is to substitute a multivalent (MV) metal for the commonly used lithiated carbon anode. Magnesium is a prime candidate for such a MV battery due to its high volumetric capacity, abundance, and limited tendency to form dendrites. One challenge that is slowing the implementation of Mg-based batteries, however, is the development of efficient and stable electrolytes. Computational screening for molecular species having sufficiently wide electrochemical windows is a starting point for the identification of optimal electrolytes. Nevertheless, this window can be altered via interfacial interactions with electrodes. These interactions are typically omitted in screening studies, yet they have the potential to generate large shifts to the HOMO and LUMO of the electrolyte components. The present study quantifies the stability of several common electrolyte solvents on model electrodes of relevance for Mg batteries. Many-body perturbation theory calculations based on the G0W0 method were used to predict shifts in a solvent's electronic levels arising from interfacial interactions. In molecules exhibiting large dipole moments, our calculations indicate that these interactions reduce the HOMO-LUMO gap by ∼ 25% (compared to isolated molecules). We conclude that electrode interactions can narrow an electrolyte's electrochemical window significantly, thereby accelerating redox decomposition reactions. Accounting for these interactions in screening studies presents an opportunity to refine predictions of electrolyte stability.

Quasiparticle band gaps, excitonic effects, and anisotropic optical properties of the monolayer distorted1Tdiamond-chain structuresReS2andReSe2

We report many-body perturbation theory calculations of excited-state properties of distorted 1-T diamond-chain monolayer rhenium disulfide (ReS2) and diselenide (ReSe2). Electronic self-energy substantially enhances their quasiparticle band gaps and, surprisingly, converts monolayer ReSe2 to a direct-gap semiconductor, which was, however, regarded to be an indirect one by density-functional-theory calculations. Their optical absorption spectra are dictated by strongly bound excitons. Unlike hexagonal structures, the lowest-energy bright exciton of distorted 1-T ReS2 exhibits a perfect figure-8 shape polarization dependence but those of ReSe2 only exhibit a partial polarization dependence, which results from two nearly-degenerated bright excitons whose polarization preferences are not aligned. Our first-principles calculations are in agreement with experiments and pave the way for optoelectronic applications.

Fully self-consistent solution of the Dyson equation using a plane-wave basis set

Self-consistent solutions of the Dyson equation are obtained using a plane-wave basis set for seven small molecules. Such self-consistent solutions can help to unify the different $GW$ self-consistent schemes, reduce the scatter of results in current $GW$ calculations, and shed light on the true effects of $GW$ self-consistency. Unlike other works of self-consistent $GW$ calculations, in the present work the Green's function is expressed as a matrix under the plane-wave basis set. The algorithmic details which enable such calculations are presented. The ability to solve the full Green's function using a plane-wave basis set may open the door for future beyond-$GW$ many-body perturbation theory calculations.

Strain sensitivity of band gaps of Sn-containing semiconductors

Tuning of band gaps of semiconductors is a way to optimize materials for applications within photovoltaics or as photocatalysts. One way to achieve this is through applying strain to the materials. We investigate the effect of strain on a range of Sn-containing semiconductors using density functional theory and many-body perturbation theory calculations. We find that the band gaps of bulk Sn oxides with ${\text{SnO}}_{6}$ octahedra are highly sensitive to volumetric strain. By applying a small isotropic strain of 2% $(\ensuremath{-}2%)$, a decrease (increase) of band gaps as large as 0.8 to 1.0 eV are obtained. We attribute the ultrahigh strain sensitivity to the pure Sn $s$-state character of the conduction-band edges. Other Sn-containing compounds may show both increasing and decreasing gaps under tensile strain and we show that the behavior can be understood by analyzing the role of the Sn $s$ states in both the valence and the conduction bands.

Tune-out wavelengths for the alkaline-metal atoms**Project supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (Grant Nos. 11304063 and 11174066) and the Youth Foundation of Liaoning Normal University, China (Grant No. LS2014L002).

An approximation formula is developed to determine the tune-out wavelengths for the ground states of the alkaline-metal atoms lithium, sodium and cesium from the existing relativistic reduced matrix elements and experimental energies. The first longest tune-out wavelengths for Li, Na, and Cs are 670.971 nm, 589.557 nm, and 880.237 nm, respectively. This is in good agreement with the previous high precise results of 670.971626 nm, 589.5565 nm, and 880.25 nm from the relativistic all-order many-body perturbation theory (RMBPT) calculation [Phys. Rev. A 84 043401 (2011)].

SYSTEMATIC CALCULATIONS OF ENERGY LEVELS AND TRANSITION RATES OF C-LIKE IONS WITH Z = 13-36

Based on systematic calculations using a combined relativistic configuration interaction and a many-body perturbation theory (MBPT) approach, we provide a complete and consistent data set for 46 levels belonging to the 2s 22p 2, 2s2p 3, 2p 4, 2s 22p3s, 2s 22p3p, and 2s 22p3d configurations in C-like ions with 13 ≤ Z ≤ 36. The data set includes energy levels as well as electric dipole, magnetic dipole, electric quadrupole, and magnetic quadrupole transition properties. Extensive comparisons with available observed and calculated results are made and indicate that the present MBPT calculations are highly accurate. The present data set can be used reliably for many purposes, such as the line identification of observed spectra, and modeling and diagnostics of astrophysical and fusion plasmas.

Interfacial effects on the band edges of functionalized si surfaces in liquid water.

By combining ab initio molecular dynamics simulations and many-body perturbation theory calculations of electronic energy levels, we determined the band edge positions of functionalized Si(111) surfaces in the presence of liquid water, with respect to vacuum and to water redox potentials. We considered surface terminations commonly used for Si photoelectrodes in water splitting experiments. We found that, when exposed to water, the semiconductor band edges were shifted by approximately 0.5 eV in the case of hydrophobic surfaces, irrespective of the termination. The effect of the liquid on band edge positions of hydrophilic surfaces was much more significant and determined by a complex combination of structural and electronic effects. These include structural rearrangements of the semiconductor surfaces in the presence of water, changes in the orientation of interfacial water molecules with respect to the bulk liquid, and charge transfer at the interfaces, between the solid and the liquid. Our results showed that the use of many-body perturbation theory is key to obtain results in agreement with experiments; they also showed that the use of simple computational schemes that neglect the detailed microscopic structure of the solid-liquid interface may lead to substantial errors in predicting the alignment between the solid band edges and water redox potentials.

Forbidden-line spectroscopy of the ground-state configuration of Cd-like W

only using electric-dipole forbidden emission lines, in what we label forbidden-line spectroscopy, we identified several energy levels in cadmium-like tungsten, W26+. The spectrum was recorded at the Shanghai permanentmagnet electron beam ion trap in the visible region. The identifications were supported by large-scale multiconfiguration Dirac-Hartree-Fock calculations which involved careful investigations of core-valence and core-core correlation effects, and by relativistic many-body perturbation theory calculations. With this novel method we identified in all seven lines and measured their wavelengths. From this we can determine the relative position of seven energy levels. Due to the close degeneracy of two levels, we give alternative energies for three of the levels.

Instantaneous band gap collapse in photoexcited monoclinic VO2 due to photocarrier doping.

Using femtosecond time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy we demonstrate that photoexcitation transforms monoclinic VO2 quasi-instantaneously into a metal. Thereby, we exclude an 80 fs structural bottleneck for the photoinduced electronic phase transition of VO2. First-principles many-body perturbation theory calculations reveal a high sensitivity of the VO2 band gap to variations of the dynamically screened Coulomb interaction, supporting a fully electronically driven isostructural insulator-to-metal transition. We thus conclude that the ultrafast band structure renormalization is caused by photoexcitation of carriers from localized V 3d valence states, strongly changing the screening before significant hot-carrier relaxation or ionic motion has occurred.

Geometrical and optical benchmarking of copper(II) guanidine-quinoline complexes: insights from TD-DFT and many-body perturbation theory (part II).

Ground- and excited-state properties of copper(II) charge-transfer systems have been investigated starting from density-functional calculations with particular emphasis on the role of (i) the exchange and correlation functional, (ii) the basis set, (iii) solvent effects, and (iv) the treatment of dispersive interactions. Furthermore (v), the applicability of TD-DFT to excitations of copper(II) bis(chelate) charge-transfer systems is explored by performing many-body perturbation theory (GW + BSE), independent-particle approximation and ΔSCF calculations for a small model system that contains simple guanidine and imine groups. These results show that DFT and TD-DFT in particular in combination with hybrid functionals are well suited for the description of the structural and optical properties, respectively, of copper(II) bis(chelate) complexes. Furthermore, it is found an accurate theoretical geometrical description requires the use of dispersion correction with Becke-Johnson damping and triple-zeta basis sets while solvent effects are small. The hybrid functionals B3LYP and TPSSh yielded best performance. The optical description is best with B3LYP, whereby heavily mixed molecular transitions of MLCT and LLCT character are obtained which can be more easily understood using natural transition orbitals. An natural bond orbital analysis sheds light on the donor properties of the different donor functions and the intraguanidine stabilization during coordination to copper(I) and (II).
