Stacking sequence blending of multiple composite laminates using genetic algorithms

This paper presents a methodology for designing any two-dimensional array of laminated composite panels with varying loads such that continuity of some or all of the plies is maintained across adjacent panels. This design process is commonly referred to as blending and is beneficial in helping to minimize the manufacturing effort and cost of the panels while meeting structural requirements at minimum weight. The methodology discussed here involves an automated 2-step optimization process using a commercial genetic algorithm software code called DARWIN. The methodology is tested using a 3×3 array of sandwich panels, and an 18-panel group arranged in a horseshoe pattern. Results for each design problem are generated using ADOPTECH's Java-based composite laminate design software called OLGA, which utilizes the DARWIN optimization engine. A comparison between the individually optimized panels designs and the blended designs for each design problem is also presented.

Challenges of integration in semiconductor manufacturing firms

Manufacturing efforts to reduce time to market often adopt a concurrent engineering approach that focuses on coordination and integration among engineering, production and marketing functions. Technological complexity in the semiconductor industry requires an extension of this paradigm to include multiple engineering groups and a strong production maintenance department. Through interviews with employees drawn from engineering, production, maintenance, marketing and other departments at three semiconductor plants, organizational problems are uncovered that inhibit successful integration within firms in this industry. Ideas for overcoming these problems are given with suggestions for future research.

Combined Structural and Manufacturing Optimization of Stiffened Composite Panels

Manufacturing considerations have been incorporated into the design optimization of a blade-stiffened composite panel. For the manufacturing analysis, a one-dimensional resin film infusion model is developed to compute the infiltration time of the resin into a fabric preform of the panel. Results are presented showing the effects of design variables that are important for structural performance, such as crosssectional geometry variables and material properties, on the panel manufacturing effort. In addition, the effects of manufacturing process variables, such as pressure and temperature, on the structural performance are studied. The structural problem is formulated to minimize the panel mass subject to buckling constraints. A simplified buckling analysis model for the panel is used to compute the critical buckling loads. The objective of the manufacturing problem is to minimize the resin infiltration time. Optimum panel designs for the manufacturing and structures problems alone, as well as for the combined problem, are generated using a genetic algorithm. The results indicate a strong connection between the structural and manufacturing design variables and tradeoffs between the two responses, and illustrate that a multidisciplinary approach to the problem is essential to incorporate manufacturing into the preliminary design stage.

Pioneering recombinant growth hormone manufacturing: Pounds produced per mile of height

The first efforts to produce recombinant human growth hormone (GH) for clinical use were begun by scientists at Genentech, Inc., almost a generation ago, late in 1979. The very small market for GH that was predicted at the time led to this manufacturing effort being done as a demonstration project. Among the early issues was whether the Escherichia coli host cell could be routinely produced in a stable manner and be inactivated after the GH production run (as required by federal guidelines) without the GH being permanently denatured. A 10 L E. coli process was developed, and phase I testing began in early 1981. The approval of this recombinant GH product by the FDA in 1985 paved the way for many improvements and a sustained production effort in the next decade. The more than 1900 fermentation runs have produced tons of E. coli and more than 130 pounds of GH for both clinical research and the treatment of severely short children. (J Pediatr 1997;131:S5-7)

Development of the Subsea Completion System for the Highlander Field

Summary The Highlander field is being developed with a remote subsea manifold system connected to production facilities on the Tartan platform some 8 miles away. To accommodate the need for gas lift, water injection, equipment interchangeability, and service flexibility, a completely new, innovative subsea system was devised. Only 19 months elapsed between start of work on the comprehensive bid package and delivery of the first complete set of completion equipment ready to run subsea. This was achieved by thorough project organization, preparation of some 1,800 new drawings, intense manufacturing effort, and stringent quality control. Close coordination between operator and supplier, with considerable operator involvement, proved essential to the successful execution of the project. Introduction While subsea completion technology has been developing rapidly since its introduction more than 20 years ago, refinement of equipment and optimization of approach are still far from their ultimate. The recent increase in the use of subsea completions as a means of oilfield development has resulted in an upsurge in the general level of subsea-system-design expertise. As operational experience has widened and the demands of certification and quality control have become greater, subsea systems have continuously been improved, but the range of up-to-date products is still relatively small. fThus when a present-day operator attempts to meet a new, specific subsea completion application, it is unlikely that he will find an existing system within these product ranges that completely fulfills his requirements. In general, the nearest the operator will get to an "off-the-shelf" system is a selection of standard building-block components e.g., valves, connectors, tees, and guide frames - that can be pieced together to provide the basis for his required system. This paper describes how the Highlander subsea development project was organized to take advantage of this building-block approach. It emphasizes all aspects of project organization, including comprehensiveness of bid project organization, including comprehensiveness of bid package, timing, project control, manufacturing, and package, timing, project control, manufacturing, and quality control. To furnish a full insight into the scope of such a project, a technical outline of the entire system, including field-related features, is provided. Because the paper is written jointly by the operator and the supplier concerned, the two viewpoints should prove useful to other operators and suppliers. The Highlander Development The Highlander field is a small oil accumulation located in 420 ft [128 m] of water in U.K. Block 14/20. It contains an estimated 35 million barrels [5.6 × 10 m3] of recoverable oil. This marginal field will not economically support a dedicated production facility, so reserves are instead produced through a remote subsea manifold system tied back to the existing production facilities on the Tartan platform some 8 miles to the southeast. Flow from a number of subsea wells is commingled through a common 12-in. [0.3-m] subsea pipeline (see Fig. 1). Field development is complicated by a low GOR and low reservoir energy, resulting in the need to include both gas-lift and water-injection systems to maximize oil recovery. Separate pipelines are able to deliver the gas and water from the Tartan platform to the template manifold. The flow of gas and water from the common headers into the subsea wells is controlled by variable subsea chokes. This is the first use of remote-controlled variable chokes in a subsea application. As in many such marginal developments, an early cash flow was critical in reaching commercial viability. This was achieved in the Highlander field by early production; flow from three of the four existing delineation wells was directed along separate pipelines to the Tartan platform. These wells were later tied back as satellite wells to the Highlander template manifold when it was installed in the summer of 1985, and the service to which each pipeline was put during the early production phase was changed. Development of the Completion Specification The design of the Highlander completion equipment had to encompass a number of essential production-related functions and, at the same time, follow a general philosophy of incorporating simple components to make a philosophy of incorporating simple components to make a fully integrated, yet versatile, system. Integrated metrology systems

The integration of quality into future manufacturing planning is an essential part of the factory of the future, one specific area of quality assurance — metrology or dimensional inspection — plays a key role in guiding, coordinating, and approving manufacturing efforts. The advances in modern industrial production towards greater precision and more reliable function of products have created the need for a continuing, parallel improvement in dimensional measurement and inspection technologies. Selecting, justifying, and integrating these technologies into manufacturing operations requires careful planning and the consideration of alternative approaches for implementation. An overview is presented of a programme recently completed for the US Army Tank and Automotive Command (TACOM) with the purpose of assisting TACOM vendors in the integration of metrology into future operations to improve quality and reduce overall costs.

Manufacture of TFTR Toroidal Field Coils

A multi-year development and manufacturing effort was recently completed with the shipment of the last toroidal field (TF) coil for the Tokamak Fusion Test Reactor (TFTR) project. This manufacturing effort required the development and implementation of complex manufacturing processes and controls to assure TF coil integrity. This paper describes the manufacturing processes, tests and controls which were necessary to produce the 4.26 m OD, 22680 Kg copper TF coils for the TFTR.

Strategies for high-technology equipment manufacturing in developing countries

The authors present a methodology to establish local manufacturing in a developing country with a modest telecommunications industry. The main focus of the article is on the analysis of high-technology equipment that can be applied to a large variety of computing, communications, and control systems. They conclude that with strategic planning the import content of electronic equipment can be reduced if the country in question shows potential for local manufacturing. This strategic planning requires commitments with local industry for technical assistance and three to five year purchasing programmes. For countries with a limited industrial background a manufacturing effort could be initiated through the establishment of assembly factories which in general make use of low local labour cost. A requirement for the transfer of technology to local industry must be established with these factories.

Effective Transfer of Technology from Research to Development

A model is developed to illustrate an effective way of transferring technology, particularly one that is new to a corporation, by overlapping a declining research effort with an increasing engineering and manufacturing effort. This transition stage, when a project has visibility but is competing for company resources, allows all groups to become involved while the project develops. Project leadership is critical during this phase of overlap and allows either a single- or multiple-leader approach to be effective. New research talent, which is often added at the start of a product cycle, can follow a planned interaction program that includes long-range planning, technological forecasting, budgeting, and a research survey to develop a research portfolio ready to be transferred to the development phase. The Optacon Tactile Stimulator Array

The Optacon is a direct-translation reading aid for the blind. In operation, material that has been hand scanned by the small pickup camera is reproduced in vibratory form upon the 144-element vibratory stimulator array. The present array configuration is the result of extensive psychophysical, engineering, and manufacturing effort. The array utilizes piezoelectric “bimorphs,” driven at 250 Hz, for electromechanical energy conversion. Custom integrated circuit driving circuits enable compact packaging. The 24 rows are spaced 45 mils apart and the six columns 90 mils apart, enabling the entire display to be presented on the fingertip of the blind user.

El continuo avance de aplicaciones en dispositivos de autoensamble, posicionamiento, sensores, actuadores, y que permitan controladamente la manipulación de micro y nanoestructuras, han generado amplio interés en el desarrollo de metodologías que permitan optimizar la fabricación de dispositivos para el control y manipulación a micro y nanoescalas. Este proyecto explora técnicas de fabricación de electrodos con el fin de encontrar una técnica óptima y reproducible. Se compara el rendimiento de cada técnica y se describen protocolos de limpieza y seguridad. Se diseñan e implementan tres geometrías para movilizar y posicionar micro y nanopartículas de hierro en una solución de aceite natural. Finalmente se generan campos eléctricos a partir de electroforesis, con el fin de encontrar la curva que describe el desplazamiento de las partículas con respecto al potencial aplicado. Estos resultados generan gran impacto en los actuales esfuerzos de fabricación bottom-up (controlando con campos la ubicación) y la movilidad en dispositivos electrónicos. El hecho de fabricar geometría planar con electrodos genera la posibilidad de que se pueda integrar movimiento de partículas a los circuitos integrados que se fabrican en la actualidad.

Seismic recording techniques in oil prospecting

Seismic methods for the detection of underground geological structures have been widely used since their introduction some forty years ago and a large manufacturing and research effort has gone into their development by oil companies and seismic contractors as well as the electronics industry.Both reflection and refraction methods are practicable and details are given of the various sources of seismic energy, geophones, amplifiers, recorders and methods of presentation that are available. The design and operation of these are discussed in relation to the type of signal and the background seismic noise. Analogue systems are most widely used but in recent years digital recording and analysis has been introduced in attacking prospecting problems that are more easily solved numerically.

Flight Characteristics of the B58 Mach 2 Bomber

The B58 was developed and produced for the United States Air Force by the General Dynamics Corporation, Fort Worth Division, Texas. Until recently the organisation was known as CONVAIR, Fort Worth Division.The B58 provided an abrupt advance in the technology of military aviation. In one step the speed performance of the strategic bomber was more than doubled over that of its predecessors.The development and manufacture of the B58 was accomplished under the Weapons System Management Concept. Development of the aircraft began in 1951 with the origination of design studies. Detail design and manufacturing efforts were started in 1954. Initial flight of the prototype occurred in November of 1956. An exhaustive flight test evaluation programme then ensued in parallel with production of the aircraft. The flight test programme utilised a substantial fleet of B58's, and the combined efforts of the manufacturer and the U.S.A.F.
