The article presents the techniques of manipulation and the lexical tools used as a toolkit, in the context of research on the dividing lines for the memory of Gotse Delchev between Bulgaria and North Macedonia. This work is methodological and applied; it is by no means exhaustive because it is oriented towards presenting basic knowledge. The principles of presentation of media publications on the subject, presented through the prism of research for the anniversary of the commemoration of Gotse Delchev, are explained. The purpose of the research is a comparison of the presentation of the celebrations of the historical person, as a basis for a more serious study of the attitudes and stereotypes in the two societies.

Repurposing endogenous Type I-D CRISPR-Cas system for genome editing in Synechococcus sp. PCC7002

Synechococcus sp. PCC7002 has been considered as a photosynthetic chassis for the conversion of CO2 into biochemicals through genetic modification. However, conventional genetic manipulation techniques prove inadequate for comprehensive genetic modifications in this strain. Here, we present the development of a genome editing tool tailored for S. PCC7002, leveraging its endogenous type I-D CRISPR-Cas system. Utilizing this novel tool, we successfully deleted the glgA1 gene and iteratively edited the genome to obtain a double mutant of glgA1 and glgA2 genes. Additionally, large DNA fragments encompassing the entire type I-A (∼14 kb) or III-B CRISPR-Cas (∼21 kb) systems were completely knocked-out in S. PCC7002 using our tool. Furthermore, the endogenous pAQ5 plasmid, approximately 38 kb in length, was successfully cured from S. PCC7002. Our work demonstrates the feasibility of harnessing the endogenous CRISPR-Cas system for genome editing in S. PCC7002, thereby enriching the genetic toolkit for this species and providing a foundation for future enhancements in its biosynthetic efficiency.

Application of Resonant Plasmonic Bowtie Nanoantennas for Optically‐Assisted Diffusiophoretic Trapping of Extracellular Vesicles and Nanoparticles

AbstractPlasmonic antennas leveraging localized surface plasmon resonances (LSPR) hold a significant premise for efficiently trapping nanoscale particles at low power levels. However, their effectiveness is hindered by photothermal effects that arise with metallic nanoparticles, leading to decreased stability of trapped particles. To address this limitation, a hybrid approach that combines depletion attraction and photothermal effects inherent in plasmonic structures is proposed, capitalizing on thermally induced concentration gradients. Through the thermophoretic depletion of polyethylene glycol (PEG) molecules around plasmonic hotspots, sharp concentration gradients are created, enabling precise localization of nanoscopic particles through a synergistic effect with diffusiophoretic forces. Our experiments successfully demonstrate the ability to trap and dynamically manipulate small extracellular vesicles and 100 nm polystyrene beads, showcasing the platform's potential for assembly at the nanoscale. Remarkably, this method maintains stable trapping performance even at a laser power of . The demonstration of stable trapping of small extracellular vesicles showcases the compatibility of this platform with bio species. This study introduces a promising avenue for the precise and efficient manipulation of nanoscale particles, with wide‐ranging implications in nanotechnology, biophysics, and nanomedicine. This research opens new opportunities for advancing nanoscale particle studies and applications, ushering in a new era of nanoscale manipulation techniques.

Recent Advances in Dielectrophoretic Manipulation and Separation of Microparticles and Biological Cells.

Dielectrophoresis (DEP) is an advanced microfluidic manipulation technique that is based on the interaction of polarized particles with the spatial gradient of a non-uniform electric field to achieve non-contact and highly selective manipulation of particles. In recent years, DEP has made remarkable progress in the field of microfluidics, and it has gradually transitioned from laboratory-scale research to high-throughput manipulation in practical applications. This paper reviews the recent advances in dielectric manipulation and separation of microparticles and biological cells and discusses in detail the design of chip structures for the two main methods, direct current dielectrophoresis (DC-DEP) and alternating current dielectrophoresis (AC-DEP). The working principles, technical implementation details, and other improved designs of electrode-based and insulator-based chips are summarized. Functional customization of DEP systems with specific capabilities, including separation, capture, purification, aggregation, and assembly of particles and cells, is then performed. The aim of this paper is to provide new ideas for the design of novel DEP micro/nano platforms with the desired high throughput for further development in practical applications.

When enough is enough: The impact of combined graphical impression management on financial judgement

The literature on impression management has identified three main types of graph manipulation: presentation enhancement, selectivity, and distortion. Nevertheless, no paper has analyzed the combined impact of all three techniques. Through an experiment involving 1701 certified public accountants, participants were exposed to graphs featuring all three manipulation techniques using distinct colors (blue, black, and red), all juxtaposed against graphs with no manipulation or a singular manipulation type. Our results show that selectivity alone has the same impact as distortion, selectivity, and presentation enhancement combined. Additional results demonstrate that the choice of color (blue versus red) in presentation enhancement, when combined with measurement distortion and selectivity, impact participants' perception differently. However, this effect is not observed when colorblind professionals are included.

The impact of delivery technique on Woven EndoBridge deployment and detachment in an in vitro aneurysm model.

The Woven EndoBridge (WEB) device is increasingly used for treatment of wide-neck bifurcation aneurysms. With the newer 17 system, WEB deployment has been associated with a phenomenon known as incomplete or "sticky" detachment from the delivery wire, which may lead to imprecise placement. Optimal techniques for WEB manipulation and delivery to avoid this problem are poorly defined. This study aimed to evaluate standard WEB deployment techniques and determine the impact of delivery techniques and WEB stickiness on procedural success. An in vitro study using identical silicone middle cerebral artery aneurysm models (n = 32) assessed WEB (6 × 2 mm) deployment through a VIA 17 microcatheter via three techniques that involved: "loading," "neutral," and "tension" on the pusher wire. Microcatheter position was placed in varied positions from the WEB device. Woven EndoBridge stickiness was graded during detachment attempts. Primary outcomes were detachment stickiness and attempt number, compared between techniques using Fisher's exact test. The tension technique resulted in significantly fewer sticky detachments and detachment attempts compared to forward load or neutral techniques (p < 0.001). Sticky detachment was lower with tension (0% sticky) versus forward load (42% sticky, 8% very sticky) (p < 0.001). Forward load had a 50% rate of stickiness versus 0% with tension and neutral (p < 0.001). Forward load required multiple attempts in 100%, compared to 57% with neutral and 8% with tension (p < 0.001). Higher stickiness grades increased the need for multiple attempts (p < 0.001). The tension technique reduces incomplete WEB detachment and enables precise single-attempt detachment, optimizing delivery precision. In vivo confirmation is needed.

This paper investigates wave solutions and electromagnetic wave phenomena governed by the (3+1)-dimensional extended Zakharov-Kuznetsov equation (EZKE) utilizing the Sardar sub-equation method. With a focus on electromagnetic wave generation and propagation, we rigorously analyze fundamental properties, soliton solutions, and dynamic behaviors of the EZKE. Through this analytical technique, we unravel the complex interplay among various wave types, including solitary waves and electromagnetic structures, elucidating their formation mechanisms and interaction dynamics. Furthermore, we delve into the stability characteristics of the EZKE, enhancing our understanding of its mathematical and physical implications. Our findings not only contribute to theoretical insights into nonlinear wave phenomena in (3+1)-dimensional space but also hold practical significance in plasma physics, nonlinear optics, and electromagnetic wave propagation. This study advances the development of innovative wave manipulation and control techniques, with applications ranging from plasma confinement in fusion devices to the design of advanced photonic devices for telecommunications and sensing purposes.

A novel technique for posterior lumbar interbody fusion to obtain a good local lordosis angle: anterior-release posterior lumbar interbody fusion.

Herein, we describe a novel posterior lumbar interbody fusion (PLIF) technique with annulus fibrosus (AF) release and the use of expandable cages (called "anterior-release PLIF" [ARPLIF]). In this technique, posterior column osteotomy (PCO) and AF release provide excellent intervertebral mobility. AF release involves circumferentially peeling off the AF above or below the endplate between the fixed vertebrae under radiographic guidance without cutting the AF and anterior longitudinal ligament. Subsequently, high-angle variable-angle expandable cages are used to simultaneously expand both sides before inserting the percutaneous pedicle screws and correcting to achieve good local lumbar lordosis. PCO and AF release achieve excellent intervertebral mobility. Intervertebral mobility and simultaneous expansion of both cages disperse the force on the endplates, reducing cage subsidence, and the high-angle cages facilitate high intervertebral angle creation. The novel ARPLIF intervertebral manipulation technique can promote good local lumbar lordosis formation.

Immigration Crisis in Palestine (1933–1936) as Reflected in Periodical Press of United States

The image of Palestine during the years 1933 to 1936 was shaped in the periodical press of the United States under the influence of the “colonial discourse”. In the first half of the 1930s, the issue of Jewish immigrants became one of the central themes in the “Palestinian question”. The materials from the periodical press allow for an exploration of how perceptions regarding the causes of the crisis in the Middle East evolved within the informational discourse of the United States; how the representations of Arabs, Jews, and Great Britain underwent transformation. Publications from American newspapers provide insights into evaluations of British measures aimed at resolving the immigration crisis in Palestine during the 1930s. An analysis of U.S. newspapers reveals distinctive features in the construction of the images of the Jewish and Arab populations of Palestine. It identifies who was categorized as “the other”. The first half of the 1930s proved decisive for American public opinion in prioritizing positions within the context of the Middle Eastern conflict. The material presented in this article vividly illustrates the stages of evolving assessments of the situation in Palestine from 1933 to 1936. The study examines the manipulative techniques and strategies employed by American periodicals in the 1930s concerning Palestine, thereby providing a clearer understanding of how the issue of Jewish immigration was integrated into the broader narrative of Palestine within U.S. periodical literature.

Fusiform nanoparticle boosts efficient genetic transformation in Sclerotinia sclerotiorum

BackgroundSclerotinia sclerotiorum is a highly destructive phytopathogenic fungus that poses a significant threat to a wide array of crops. The current constraints in genetic manipulation techniques impede a thorough comprehension of its pathogenic mechanisms and the development of effective control strategies.ResultsHerein, we present a highly efficient genetic transformation system for S. sclerotiorum, leveraging the use of fusiform nanoparticles, which are synthesized with FeCl3 and 2,6-diaminopyrimidine (DAP). These nanoparticles, with an average longitude length of 59.00 nm and a positively charged surface, facilitate the direct delivery of exogenous DNA into the mycelial cells of S. sclerotiorum, as well as successful integration with stable expression. Notably, this system circumvents fungal protoplast preparation and tedious recovery processes, streamlining the transformation process considerably. Furthermore, we successfully employed this system to generate S. sclerotiorum strains with silenced oxaloacetate acetylhydrolase-encoding gene Ss-oah1.ConclusionsOur findings demonstrate the feasibility of using nanoparticle-mediated delivery as a rapid and reliable tool for genetic modification in S. sclerotiorum. Given its simplicity and high efficiency, it has the potential to significantly propel genetic research in filamentous fungi, offering new avenues for elucidating the intricacies of pathogenicity and developing innovative disease management strategies.Graphical

Using DeepLabCut-Live to probe state dependent neural circuits of behavior with closed-loop optogenetic stimulation.

Closed-loop behavior paradigms enable us to dissect the state-dependent neural circuits underlying behavior in real-time. However, studying context-dependent locomotor perturbations has been challenging due to limitations in molecular tools and techniques for real-time manipulation of spinal cord circuits. We developed a novel closed-loop optogenetic stimulation paradigm that utilizes DeepLabCut-Live pose estimation to manipulate primary sensory afferent activity at specific phases of the locomotor cycle in mice. A compact DeepLabCut model was trained to track hindlimb kinematics in real-time and integrated into the Bonsai visual programming framework. This allowed an LED to be triggered to photo-stimulate sensory neurons expressing channelrhodopsin at user-defined pose-based criteria, such as during the stance or swing phase. Optogenetic activation of nociceptive TRPV1 + sensory neurons during treadmill locomotion reliably evoked paw withdrawal responses. Photoactivation during stance generated a brief withdrawal, while stimulation during swing elicited a prolonged response likely engaging stumbling corrective reflexes. Comparison with Existing Methods: This new method allows for high spatiotemporal precision in manipulating spinal circuits based on the phase of the locomotor cycle. Unlike previous approaches, this closed-loop system can control for the state-dependent nature of sensorimotor responses during locomotion. Integrating DeepLabCut-Live with optogenetics provides a powerful new approach to dissect the context-dependent role of sensory feedback and spinal interneurons in modulating locomotion. This technique opens new avenues for uncovering the neural substrates of state-dependent behaviors and has broad applicability for studies of real-time closed-loop manipulation based on pose estimation. Functoriality in categorical symplectic geometry

Categorical symplectic geometry is the study of a rich collection of invariants of symplectic manifolds, including the Fukaya A ∞ A_\infty -category, Floer cohomology, and symplectic cohomology. Beginning with work of Wehrheim and Woodward in the late 2000s, several authors have developed techniques for functorial manipulation of these invariants. We survey these functorial structures, including Wehrheim and Woodward’s quilted Floer cohomology and functors associated to Lagrangian correspondences, Fukaya’s alternate approach to defining functors between Fukaya A ∞ A_\infty -categories, and the second author’s ongoing construction of the symplectic ( A ∞ , 2 ) (A_\infty ,2) -category. In the last section, we describe a number of direct and indirect applications of this circle of ideas, and propose a conjectural version of the Barr–Beck monadicity criterion in the context of the Fukaya A ∞ A_\infty -category.

Amphibious Hybrid Laser Tweezers for Fluid and Solid Domains.

Optical trapping is a potent tool for achieving precise and noninvasive manipulation of small objects in a vacuum and liquids. However, due to the substantial disparity between optical forces and interfacial adhesion, target objects should be suspended in fluid environments, rendering solid contact surfaces a restricted area for conventional optical tweezers. In this work, by relying on a single continuous wave (CW) laser, we demonstrate an optical manipulation system applicable for both fluid and solid domains, namely, amphibious hybrid laser tweezers. The key to our system lies in modulating the intensity of the CW laser with duration shorter than the dynamic thermal equilibrium time within objects, wherein strong thermal gradient forces with ∼6 orders of magnitude higher than the forces in optical tweezers are produced, enabling moving and trapping micro/nano-objects on solid interfaces. Thereby, CW laser-based optical tweezers and pulsed laser-based photothermal shock tweezers are seamlessly fused with the advantages of cost-effectiveness and simplicity. Our concept breaks the stereotype that CW lasers are limited to generating tiny forces and instead achieve ultrawide force generation spanning from femto-newtons (10-15 N) to (10-6 N). Our work expands the horizon of optical manipulation by seamlessly bridging its applications in fluid and solid environments and holds promise for inspiring optical manipulation techniques to perform more challenging tasks, which may unearth application scenarios in diverse fields such as fundamental physical research, nanofabrication, micro/nanorobotics, biomedicine, and cytology.

Study of Electronic and Optical Properties of Low-Dimensional Nanosystems by First Principles Calculations

The development of new techniques for material manipulation at the nanoscale, as well as advanced numerical tools for material design, has opened up new prospects in the engineering of novel low-dimensional systems with properties specifically designed for applications in different fields, from photonics to energy conversion. Zero-, one-, and two-dimensional nanosystems show unique electronic, optical, and transport properties that can be tuned, for instance, by size reduction, passivation, and doping. In this talk, we discuss ab-initio results obtained in the study of structural, electronic, and optical properties of low-dimensional systems, in particular focusing on silicon, germanium, and silicon/germanium nanostructures. The analysis of mechanisms that can be exploited to tune Auger recombination and carrier multiplication processes, as well as of those that affect the formation of the band offset (Type I and Type II) at the nanoscale, will be discussed. At the end, effects induced by anion ordering on electronic and optical properties of metal oxynitrides will be analyzed.

Art and science of dental photography: suggested photographic protocol with cellular device

Photography is characterized as the science and art of producing and creating images. With the evolution of technology, photography has permeated medical sciences, becoming an effective tool for different areas, such as Dentistry. For this reason, the aim of this study was to understand and discuss the importance of photography in the dental field, through a narrative literature review, and to produce a suggestion for a basic photographic protocol using a mobile phone, equipment available to a large portion of dental students and dentists. This article reviews dental photography through an advanced search in the PubMed and Virtual Health Library (VHL) databases. In addition, produce basic technical content, through a protocol, aimed at Dentistry students about the use of photography with cell phones. It has been found that photographic production depends on numerous factors: knowledge of basic photographic concepts, understanding of light manipulation techniques, and the use of equipment suitable for each case. From 1840 to the present day, photography has deeply permeated the dental context. However, there are different photographic protocols with distinct settings for intraoral and extraoral photographs. The protocol suggested in this study aimed to facilitate and standardize photographic documentation performed in the office, using a mobile phone, making the process simple and feasible for dental students and dentists. Photography plays a central role in contemporary Dentistry, being useful in different areas and facilitating the storage of patient data and treatment predictability. However, there is a necessity to promote the teaching of dental photography.

A genetic method to infer ploidy and aberrant inheritance in triploid organisms.

Polyploidy occurs naturally across eukaryotic lineages and has been harnessed in the domestication of many crops and vertebrates. In aquaculture, triploidy can be induced as a biocontainment strategy, as it creates a reproductive barrier preventing farm-to-wild introgression, which is currently a major conservation issue for the industry. However, recent work suggests that triploidisation protocols may, on occasion, produce 'failed triploids' displaying diploidy, aneuploidy and aberrant inheritance. The potentially negative consequences for conservation and animal welfare motivate the need for methods to evaluate the success of ploidy-manipulation protocols early in the production process. We developed a semi-automated version of the MAC-PR (microsatellite DNA allele counting - peak ratios) method to resolve the allelic configuration of large numbers of individuals across a panel of microsatellite markers that can be used to infer ploidy, pedigree and inheritance aberrations. We demonstrate an application of the approach using material from a series of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) breeding experiments where ploidy was manipulated using a hydrostatic pressure treatment. We validated the approach to infer ploidy against blood smears, finding a > 99% agreement between these methods, and demonstrate its potential utility to infer ploidy as early as the embryonic stage. Furthermore, we present tools to assign diploid and triploid progeny to families and to detect aberrant inheritance, which may be useful for breeding programmes that utilise ploidy manipulation techniques. The approach adds to the ploidy verification toolbox. The increased precision in detecting ploidy and inheritance aberrations will facilitate the ability of triploidisation programmes to prevent farm-to-wild introgression.

An Update on the Study of the Molecular Mechanisms Involved in Autophagy during Bacterial Pathogenesis.

Autophagy is a unique catabolic process that degrades irrelevant or damaged components in eukaryotic cells to maintain homeostasis and eliminate infections from pathogenesis. Pathogenic bacteria have developed many autophagy manipulation techniques that affect host immune responses and intracellular bacterial pathogens have evolved to avoid xenophagy. However, reducing its effectiveness as an innate immune response has not yet been elucidated. Bacterial pathogens cause autophagy in infected cells as a cell-autonomous defense mechanism to eliminate the pathogen. However, harmful bacteria have learned to control autophagy and defeat host defenses. Intracellular bacteria can stimulate and control autophagy, while others inhibit it to prevent xenophagy and lysosomal breakdown. This review evaluates the putative functions for xenophagy in regulating bacterial infection, emphasizing that successful pathogens have evolved strategies to disrupt or exploit this defense, reducing its efficiency in innate immunity. Instead, animal models show that autophagy-associated proteins influence bacterial pathogenicity outside of xenophagy. We also examine the consequences of the complex interaction between autophagy and bacterial pathogens in light of current efforts to modify autophagy and develop host-directed therapeutics to fight bacterial infections. Therefore, effective pathogens have evolved to subvert or exploit xenophagy, although autophagy-associated proteins can influence bacterial pathogenicity outside of xenophagy. Finally, this review implies how the complex interaction between autophagy and bacterial pathogens affects host-directed therapy for bacterial pathogenesis.

Improving color uniformity and the ambient contrast ratio of LEDs through the scattering-enhanced magnetic manipulation bilayered structure

To address challenges in enhancing color uniformity and ambient contrast ratio (ACR) in RGB light-emitting diodes (LEDs) without losing efficiency, we developed a scattering-enhanced magnetic manipulation (SEMM) bilayer structure. The effect of the TiO2 scattering layer on improving the LED’s angular intensity non-uniformity (AIN) was studied by ray-tracing simulations and optimized by varying the particle concentration. The magnetic manipulation technique formed the microcolumns and magnetic chains of the Fe3O4 anti-reflective layer, which was optimized by adjusting Fe3O4 particle size, magnetic field strength, and Fe3O4 concentration. The resulting bilayered device significantly increased the ACR by 11.38 times and reduced AIN by 63% compared to conventional graphite-based LEDs, while maintaining high brightness and consistent color quality across angles. This marks a pioneering application of magnetic manipulation in enhancing LED display quality.

Evaluation of the scapulohumeral distraction technique for anterior shoulder dislocation: a randomized controlled trial

IntroductionShoulder dislocation is a common injury presenting in emergency Department. Numerous methods have been described in the literature for glenohumeral reduction. These methods can be divided into two groups: traction maneuvers and the combination of traction with scapula manipulation techniques. In this article, we introduced a new maneuver for shoulder reduction, namely, the combination of traction with handling the scapula (scapulohumeral distraction, SHD) and compare it to the Hippocratic Method (HT). Materials and methodsThe study took place from November 2021 to September 2023. A total of 96 patients with acute anterior shoulder dislocation were enrolled in the study. Eighty-seven patients, who met all inclusion criteria, were randomly assigned to one of the two groups (SHD and HM). We evaluated each method for success rate, time to relocation, complications over a follow-up period of one month, patients’ satisfaction and pain level during the procedure. ResultsBoth methods had comparable success rates (SHD 95.3% vs. HM 93.2%, p=.833) while no complications where observed. However, SHD method required significantly less procedure time (p=.001). Moreover, patients in SHD group reported significantly less pain (p=.012) and greater satisfaction (p=.003) levels. Furthermore, when we assessed relocation time, pain and patient satisfaction as a function of recurrence, there were no statistically significant differences between the 2 techniques. Similarly, the evaluation of relocation time for both techniques as a function of BMI and age did not indicate statistically significant differences. ConclusionScapulohumeral distraction technique (SHD) represents a safe, anatomically based and simple method for shoulder reduction. It showed a statistically significant decrease in relocation time and pain, with patients mentioned higher satisfaction rates compared to the classical Hippocratic method. Nonetheless, there were no statistically significant differences between the two techniques regarding success rate.
