Abstract Within the last few years at least three new graduate student journals of philosophy have begun publication: DIANOIA, KINESIS and TELOS. One of the major factors responsible for such a new cultural phenomenon is the educational explosion triggered by the updated personnel-requirements of the New Industrial State: the « system » can no longer function with a specialized managerial elite and an industrial proletariat which has been (or is in the process of being) displaced by automation and cybernation. Thus the old working class as a reservoir of abstract labor becomes superfluous to the system that now requires highly trained manpower obtainable only through extended education.
