Are Intellectual Assets Management Important for University Performance Achievement??

The purpose of this study is to explore how universities extract the value of knowledge assets to be able to survive and be competitive. This study wants to find the governance of knowledge assets embedded in Indonesian state universities’ human capital, structural capital, and relational and innovation capital. In addition, the questionnaire survey results will show the relationship between knowledge assets and university performance. This research will provide an understanding of the measurement of knowledge assets and the performance of higher education institutions. The results of this study indicate that knowledge assets, as measured by human capital, relational capital, and structural capital, positively influence the performance of universities in Indonesia. Therefore, it is proper for universities in Indonesia to be able to manage knowledge assets optimally.

Examining employee performance through knowledge management practices, organisational commitment and capacity building in the Malaysian hotel industry

Purpose The purpose of this study is to examine the role of knowledge management practices, organisational commitment and capacity building on employee performance in the hotel industry. This study also investigated the mediating role of organisational commitment and capacity building between knowledge management practices and employee performance. Design/methodology/approach A quantitative approach and questionnaire survey were used to collect data from hotel employees from Malaysia. Self-administered questionnaires were distributed to collect data from 291 participants, and partial least squares structural equation modelling was used to analyse the hypotheses. Findings The results of this study confirm that knowledge management practices positively and significantly affect knowledge-employee performance. Employees achieve this performance through the mediating influence of organisational commitment and capacity building culture. Practical implications This study offers several implications for Malaysian practitioners and policymakers regarding learning and knowledge management practices in the hospitality industry. The results suggest that organisations can manage knowledge assets and key processes of the organisational environment to create and use knowledge to improve sustainable employee performance through knowledge management practices. Originality/value This study sheds light on the knowledge management literature by examining the effect of knowledge management practices on organisational commitment, particularly in the hospitality industry in Malaysia.

Positioning the Knowledge Creation and Business Strategy on Banking Industry in a Developing Country

This article aims to align business strategy and knowledge creation in banking industry through knowledge management (KM) approach by maximizing the tangible and intangible resources. Prior study offered more general context of KM approach while misplaced and less discussed practical process of knowledge sharing practices in the context of banking industry. We developed research model by focusing on banking organization, especially in a developing country. The authors use literature review and document analysis of business strategy in bank. This article integrated and analyzed knowledge gap and business strategy to develop a comprehensive approach for banking company. The gap between what a bank knows and needs to know is an internal knowledge gap, in a sense representing the strengths and weaknesses of a “the alignment between knowledge–business” analysis. The gap between what they know and what its competitors know is an external knowledge gap. It represents the opportunities and threats of a knowledge–business analysis. In addition, there is still no specific team, department, and strategy to manage knowledge assets. The results of this research may help finance companies and managers to initiate KM or to encourage knowledge sharing in banking organization. Therefore, managerial level is supposed to develop a strategy and regulation to encourage employee's participation in knowledge transfer schema. We combined numerous methods and theories namely Zack and Nonaka models as tools to solve the obstacle of alignment between business-knowledge strategic gap and knowledge sharing schema.

A temporal graph framework for intelligence extraction in social media networks

Social media networks (SMNs) are increasingly used in professional management of knowledge workers and related assets. However, the factors affecting behavioral trends and activity levels in these networks are not well understood. Although social and cognitive theories can help to explain human behavior in traditional social networks, their application to SMNs has not been validated. Traditional social network modeling techniques may not accurately predict real-world SMN activities. This research developed a temporal graph framework for intelligence extraction in SMNs. Theory-based, data-driven models (Conformity Model (COM), Recency-Primacy Model (REM), Trend Interaction Model (TIM), Periodic Interaction Model (PIM)) were developed based on the framework to capture various aspects of user behavior: conformity effect, recency, primacy, periodicity, and dynamic trend. The models capture the activity history and dynamically combine pricing information to enhance predictive accuracy. Using data of 83,536 GitHub software repositories on cryptocurrency, this article reports the results of experiments that compare the models’ performance in predicting SMN activities over time. Experimental results show that the model (REM) that captures recency/primacy effects of human cognitive processing outperformed other models in 9 (out of 18) measures pertaining to engagement, contribution, influence, and popularity. Primacy plays a dominant role in predicting engagement, contribution, and popularity, whereas recency plays a key role in predicting influence. Short-term trend (modeled with TIM) was found to yield significantly better performance on predicting user contribution. The models also outperformed an integrated machine learning (IML) model by most measures. Overall, the effects modeled by REM and TIM were found to be more significant than the effects modeled by COM, PIM, and IML. The research contributes to enhancing understanding of SMN behavior, developing new models to simulate and predict SMN activities, and designing new artifacts for information systems practitioners to manage knowledge assets and to extract SMN intelligence.

A RELEVÂNCIA DO CAPITAL INTELECTUAL NAS PEQUENAS E MÉDIAS EMPRESAS

ABSTRACT Understanding the environment of small and medium-sized companies is indeed relevant, since they are considered a driver of economic and socio-environmental development, due to their ability to generate jobs. However, considering the strategic importance of small and medium-sized companies for the economy, society and governments, the challenge of understanding the peculiarities of the dimensions of Intellectual Capital in this environment is still something to be explored in depth. Thus, the present study is conducted to empirically examine the dimensions of use and value creation of Intellectual Capital in small and medium-sized companies and, simultaneously, provide a clear vision of the strategic role of Intellectual Capital in the effective management of knowledge assets. Through a quantitative approach, this research made use of an online survey as a method of treating the ambition, and the results show that all dimensions of Intellectual Capital have significant effects on the creation of value in small and medium-sized companies. However, it also reveals that the lack of investment capacity seems to be an obstacle to sustainability. The present study has a number of respondent limitations and future studies may not only be carried out in a larger sample, but also contemplate other aspects.

Intelligence capital: The management of knowledge assets and development of adaptive capacities in the city of Arequipa

Purpose: The objective of this research is to measure the intelligence components and capabilities in the city of Arequipa, based on the Integral Intelligence Model (Olavarrieta and Carrillo, 2009). This model articulates the notion of Intelligence Capital, which allows components and capabilities to be developed in agents, thus promoting adaptation, knowledge management and quick responses in the optimal decision making by these agents. Design/methodology: The Integral Intelligence Model proposed by Carrillo and Olavarrieta (2009) was taken as a basis, analyzing each of its components and capabilities in relevant agents or organizations in the City of Arequipa. This work identifies how the maturity level of these capabilities makes the operationalization of the Intelligence Capital (IC) possible. The information was obtained through direct interviews with decision-making agents of the institutions in the City of Arequipa (governors and top management of companies in the city), as well as from reports and secondary sources. Findings: This research lays a solid foundation for the proper articulation of the IC as a fundamental element of Knowledge-Based Development (KBD). The results highlight the importance of fine-tuning internal processes for this type of development, the trade-off between the speed of response and good design, execution, development and evaluation of processes and the need to develop intelligence components in organizations, in order to operationalize IC and generate value. Limitations: The study focuses on the first semester of 2020 in the City of Arequipa, a period characterized by the uncertainty and environmental risk caused by COVID-19. Practical implications: The research reveals that in the City of Arequipa, there are potential intelligence capabilities or components that are consolidated in the design, planning, execution and evaluation of internal and external processes in institutions and organizations. However, the development of these capabilities is diminished by flaws in the identification and processing of information, resulting in only moderately agile responses. Social implications: This research provides evidence that in the KBD model, social agents play a fundamental role in decision-making, as they are the ones who identify and interpret significant events in the environment. This, in turn, allows effective, positive and adaptive responses to be issued that guide and drive the organizations. Originality/value: This study presents a methodology that can be replicated in other cities, and which makes it possible to identify the intelligence capabilities of agents or organizations, in this case of a city.

AI-enabled knowledge sharing and learning: redesigning roles and processes

PurposeThis paper aims to investigate the role of AI in facilitating knowledge sharing and learning in organizations and the redesign of AI-enabled knowledge workers’ roles and processes.Design/methodology/approachThis paper develops a framework for analyzing AI’s role in different knowledge management activities, explores the impact of AI in transforming knowledge workers’ roles and processes in knowledge sharing and learning and presents recommendations for tailored AI-enabled knowledge management systems for modern knowledge worker environments.FindingsThe authors synthesize the elements from different parts of the relevant literature and develop a unified framework consisting of three dimensions of AI systems, three knowledge management (KM) activities and two types of AI–human interactions. Based on this framework, the authors summarize the primary use cases supported by AI-enabled knowledge management systems (KMS) and compare them with the traditional KMS use cases. The authors find that a single type of AI system is insufficient to support the increasingly complex nature of knowledge workers’ activities, manifested in three dimensions – process, engagement and content; a tailored AI system should be developed to support knowledge workers in their unique roles and processes.Originality/valueWith the growing interest in AI and its applications to KM, this research provides managerial insights for practitioners to effectively adopt AI in managing knowledge assets in organizations.

Influence Factors for Community-Based Road Quality in Slum Settlement Areas

National Long-Term Development Plan (RPJPN) mandated to alleviate slum settlement areas until 0 hectare s . One of the indicators to be assessed on slum settlement handling is by road settlement access. The quality of the road was affected by the physical condition and the operation, management factors either. This research aim is to identify factors that affected community-based settlement road management in slum settlement areas, through Kota Tanpa Kumuh (KOTAKU) Program or City Without Slum. The a nalysis used in this research is descriptive analysis, in which the researcher gather s factors related to community-based road management from literature study, also previous study and research. Then 7 experts that ha ve expertise in slum alleviation subject s were chosen , to validate and filter the factors that ha ve been gathered. The results indicate that there are 25 approved factors by all experts and considered as high influence factors , 13 factors approved by 4 - 6 experts considered as moderate influence factors , and 3 factors approved by less than 4 experts considered as low influence factors . Complements or substitutes? The contingent role of corporate reputation on the interplay between internal R&D and external knowledge sourcing

Existing research does not provide a clear answer to the question of whether internal knowledge development and external knowledge sourcing are complementary or substitutive innovation activities. This paper adopts a contingent approach for addressing this issue by examining whether and how the interactive effect of internal R&D efforts and external knowledge sourcing on product innovation performance may be affected by the firm’s corporate reputation. In doing so, a three-way interaction model is applied to a sample of 251 Spanish high-technology manufacturing firms. Interestingly, initial results support the substitutive argument: the positive effect of internal R&D on product innovation performance diminishes as the exposure to external knowledge increases. However, in well reputed companies, interaction becomes positive, revealing a complementary effect. Thus, the study extends the traditional approach focused on determining whether internal and external knowledge sourcing are complements or substitutes by showing that their interplay depends on other firm-specific characteristics. Moreover, identifying corporate reputation as a source of complementarity between both activities provides an additional explanation of how corporate reputation contributes to a more effective management of knowledge assets.

Maturity Level Knowledge Management System at Travelodge Batam Hotel using the Cobit 5 Framework

Advances in technology and science are increasing as a new challenge for companies that must manage knowledge assets for encourage the creation of knowledge management. Knowledge Management System (KMS) that already exists at a company like Travelodge Hotel Batam can run effectively, it is necessary to conduct an evaluation activity by examining how the process of managing knowledge possessed by each individual can be transferred to other individuals through the process of knowledge sharing. The study aim analyzes to find out the extent of the processes of knowledge level management found in Traveldoge Hotel Batam at the maturity level of the KMS. The Cobit 5 Framework Model used to evaluation the KMS in this company. The results of the analysis are maturity analysis ((AP07, BAI4, DSS3, DSS6, and MA01) and recommendation than expected to be an evaluation material that will have an impact on the KMS of company later.

Design of a Knowledge Management System for the Research-Teaching Nexus: Evidence from Institutional Audit Reports

Aim/Purpose: The need for Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) to maximize the use of their intellectual property and strategic resources for research and teaching has become ever more evident in recent years. Furthermore, little attention is paid in developing an enabling system that will facilitate knowledge transfer in the Research-Teaching Nexus (RTN). Hence, this study assesses the current state of practice in knowledge management of the nexus in higher education in Oman. It also explores the context of how Knowledge Management System (KMS) for the nexus can be designed and utilized by HEIs and challenges them to rethink their traditional approaches in managing their knowledge as-sets to boost individual and organizational learning. Background: This study provides a Knowledge Management-based framework and design of a knowledge management system that support the academic community towards the improvement of the nexus. This study sets out ideas from various academic and professional experts on how academic stakeholders in the higher education can improve and promote knowledge transfer and make better use of its knowledge and research assets for teaching and learning. It stressed the importance of having the knowledge assets or resources that can easily be pooled, accessed, and made available to its intended stakeholders. Methodology: Data were gathered from 29 out of 49 institutional quality audit reports of all HEIs in Oman. The panel comments were coded and analysed to extract valuable insights regarding the management of knowledge assets in research. Additionally, data were gathered from the institutional accreditation outcomes page of the same website. Manifest and latent content analyses were used in reporting the findings of the panel. Contribution: The study will contribute to a greater understanding and acceptance of Knowledge Management (KM) in higher education and extended the body of knowledge concerning knowledge management for the RTN. Findings: The reports revealed a very limited practice of the nexus in terms of people and culture, structure ad processes, and computing and web technologies. A few staff are involved in RTN work, there is an uneven understanding of the RTN among staff, limited joint research between staff and students are some of the reasons for this. Significantly, there is no explicit research framework or policy for the RTN, and systems and/or mechanisms are limited. Further-more, the reports did not account any use of computing and web technologies for the nexus. These limitations can lead to students with less academic, research, and graduate skills. Hence, this study presents a feature design of a KMS that incorporates various RTN best practices, as informed by the reports and literature. The design will allow the staff to utilize the research assets in the classroom, at the same time, engages students in research and scholarly under-takings. Recommendations for Practitioners: All HEIs must have a innovative system that integrates a formal agenda and approach, and set initiatives, strategies, policies, and procedures for knowledge management in utilizing research assets for teaching and learning. It must be designed so that RTN practices remain up-to-date, relevant, and responsive to the needs of the stakeholders, as well as, address academic accreditation challenges. Recommendation for Researchers: Researchers can evaluate the knowledge management of RTN practices of other HEIs outside of Oman to effectively recommend the proper course of action for teaching and learning improvement. Impact on Society: This study will redefine the role and contribution of HEIs, which are key players in advancing a knowledge economy. HEIs are expected to be powerhouses where academic knowledge is discovered, created, disseminated, shared, and re-invented. They must be able to fully grasp the value of managing knowledge to be able to effect positive and purposeful change to the community. Future Research: Future work should include staff and student surveys that examine the knowledge management need of the learning organization to better inform the design of a KMS for the RTN. Thereafter, future research can test the stage to test the effectiveness of the conceptual design.

A physics-based framework for analyzing the resilience of interdependent civil infrastructure systems: A climatic extreme event case in Hong Kong

Operationalizing resilience concepts and principles, in particular when interdependency is considered, remains a major challenge for the sustainable development of urban infrastructures and future cities. From theoretical perspective, not only does it call for sector-specific infrastructure asset management knowledge, traditional risk-based disaster analysis and emergency management techniques, but it also demands quality data and stakeholders’ competency to holistically integrate the information and analyze the data. To address these limitations, this research provides a physics-based synthesis framework for interdependent civil infrastructure system resilience analysis. The framework consists of four major components: (i) setting resilience analysis boundary through the prescribed criteria; (ii) establishing an infrastructure resilience management lifecycle; (iii) defining the physics-based modeling of infrastructure system functions; and (iv) designing the interfaces between interdependent infrastructure systems. The feasibility and applicability of the proposed framework are tested through a case study involving two interconnected infrastructure systems (i.e. stormwater drainage system and road transport system) located in Hong Kong. It incorporates relevant infrastructure information by using the ArcGIS platform which is integrated with the physics-based vulnerability analysis methods from the two distinct knowledge domains. Cascading effects of adverse events propagating through the two infrastructures are delineated using an empirical nominal damage function.

Knowledge management practices and innovation performance

PurposeThis paper aims to concentrate on the conscious and systematic managerial activities associated with handling knowledge in an organization [i.e. knowledge management (KM) practices] for the purpose of improving innovation performance through proactive management of knowledge assets. This study explores the impact of KM practices on innovation performance in the research and training center of government apparatus.Design/methodology/approachThis research provides empirical evidence on how various KM practices influence innovation performance. The results are based on the survey data collected in four areas of research and training centers of government apparatuses in Indonesia. Partial least squares are used to test the hypothesized relationships between KM practices and innovation performance.FindingsThe study found that IT practices and work organizations are positively and significantly related to innovation performance. This means that better implementation of information and technology will push innovation performance. The study also points out that knowledge-based compensation practice is one of the KM practice variables which is negatively and significantly related to innovation performance. This result shows that innovation performance will decrease by compensating knowledge improvement.Practical implicationsThis study implies that in developing innovation performance, the research and training center should not focus on providing compensation, as it will only increase the costs rather than the innovation performance itself.Originality/valueThis study adds a knowledge-based view of government agencies by demonstrating the significance of KM for innovation performance. This study is also valuable from a managerial perspective, as it highlights the most effective KM practice to improve organizational innovation performance.

The effect of organization culture and technology on motivation, knowledge asset and knowledge management

PurposeThe purpose of this study was to examine factors that affect knowledge management at universities in Makassar, Indonesia.Design/methodology/approachThis study used explanatory research to find the causal relationship between the variables in the model. The unit of analysis was students at four universities in Makassar. The four universities were Hasanuddin University, Makassar State University, Islamic State University of Alauddin Makassar and Polytechnic of Ujung Pandang. Sample technique for this study was determined by using the proportionate stratified sampling method with a total sample of 300 students. Data were collected by using questionnaires and interviews. The analysis method used to test the model was structural equation modeling.FindingsThe results show that organization culture has a positive and significant influence on motivation. Organization culture also has a positive and significant influence on knowledge assets. Technology has a positive and significant influence on knowledge assets but not on motivation. Moreover, organization culture, technology and motivation do not have a positive and significant influence on knowledge management. Knowledge assets have a positive and significant influence on knowledge management.Originality/valueOriginality of this paper shows that built the model of organization culture and technology on motivation, knowledge asset and knowledge management to know about its effect, methods and variables that used in this study have not been discussed in previous studies with the same purpose, method and same location.

Open Innovation and Social Big Data for Sustainability: Evidence from the Tourism Industry

This paper aims to contribute to the debate on Open Innovation in the age of Big Data by shedding new light on the role that social networks can play as enabling platforms for tourists’ involvement and sources for the creation and management of valuable knowledge assets. The huge amount of data generated on social media by tourists related to their travel experiences can be a valid source of open innovation. To achieve this aim, this paper presents evidence of a digital tourism experience, through a longitudinal case study of a destination in Apulia, a Southern European region. The findings of the study demonstrate how social Big Data could open up innovation processes that could be of support in defining sustainable tourism experiences in a destination.

Knowledge Management Via AUTomated Organizational CARTography (AUTOCART)

The post-globalization epoch has placed businesses everywhere in new and different competitive situations where knowledgeable, effective, and efficient behavior has come to provide the competitive and comparative edge. In this paper, we propose a model to automatically acquire, visually represent, and collectively reason on organizational textual content. The model enables an organization to visualize its knowledge and knowledge flows and present them in a graphical and visual framework, referred to as AUTomated Organizational CARTography (AUTOCART). Applying this model in the area of satellite engineering, we conduct an empirical study to explore the process of knowledge acquisition and diffusion in organizations. We find that text-based knowledge diffusion may be the solution to alleviating knowledge bottlenecks and there exists cohesion between scientific and commercial research based on the practice adopted within an organization. Our research provides great insights for practitioners to effectively manage knowledge assets in organizations.

Preliminary Reflexion on Basic Principle of Infrastructure Asset Management

Therefore the Basic Principle of Infrastructure Asset Management need to be well defined. This paper presents the result of an attempt to define the Basic Principle Infrastructure Asset Management. The Infrastructure Asset Management is defined as the science, the knowledge and the program to manage the infrastructure life in order to be able to well function in sustainable way, efficient and effective. The Infrastructure Asset Management knowledge consists of 7 basic knowledges, i.e on infrastructure, infrastructure function, infrastructure physical structure infrastructure externalities, infrastructure life cycle, infrastructure economy, and infrastructure managing organization. To master the Infrastructure Asset Management analyse tools must be added such as: statistics, decision making, risk management, quality management, strategic management, etc.
