IN 1970, trauma was the fourth leading cause of death, after heart disease, cancer, and stroke.1Of the 52 million US citizens injured annually, 110,000 die, while 11 million require hospitalization for one or more days, at a cost of $3 billion.2 The role of radiology has steadily increased in importance in the diagnosis and management of abdominal trauma. A sequence of radiologic procedures is useful and should be varied according to the clinical manifestations; they are reviewed here.
