Student experiences in agile stand-up meetings

Purpose This purpose of this descriptive case study is to examine students’ experience engaging in stand-up meetings during the team project for the application development course in their Management Information Systems (MIS) program. Although the body of research on agile stand-up meetings is growing, there is little research on the experience of students who are engaging in stand-up meetings. The majority of research focuses on business professionals instead of students. Design/methodology/approach This study uses a mixed methods approach to collect data by anonymously surveying students. This exploratory study is a prelude to implementing a larger-scale investigation of student perceptions of stand-up meetings. The research was conducted using a mixed methods approach that used a survey instrument with both open-ended and closed-ended questions to gather students’ perceptions. The qualitative data was analyzed using a thematic coding approach. Findings The results of this study demonstrate that students’ experiences with stand-up meetings are overwhelmingly positive, with students describing how stand-up meetings helped them communicate and collaborate with their team and solve problems together as a team. The majority of students in this study reported that participating in stand-up meetings helped them overcome roadblocks. Research limitations/implications The main limitation of this descriptive case study is the sample size, since only one section of the course was available during the spring semester for the survey. Consequently, the findings may not be broadly generalizable to other contexts. An additional limitation is that the sample was obtained from a school primarily serving nontraditional adult students from underserved groups. One other limitation of this study is that the course surveyed was a synchronous online section with a limited amount of time for class sessions. Practical implications This case study should serve as a starting point for faculty, particularly information systems faculty, who are seeking to incorporate stand-up meetings into their courses. The benefits that students cited were clear. As one student stated, stand-up “allows us to vet through our work, help build interpersonal relationships and strengthen our skills.” The larger impact and contribution of this research is that encourages faculty to adopt the practice of stand-up meetings to enhance students’ communication, collaboration and problem solving. Social implications Incorporating stand-up meetings into coursework benefits students by fostering collaboration, communication and problem-solving. The results of this study demonstrate that students’ experiences with stand-up meetings are overwhelmingly positive, with students describing how stand-up meetings helped them communicate and collaborate with their team and solve problems together as a team. PT Sumber Rejeki Tirta is a company that provides b-one brand drinking water. However, in the process of selling, borrowing, processing and producing gallons, they still use the manual method. The purpose of this study is to design and implement a stock information system that suits the company's needs in managing data on purchases, processes, production, reuse, sales, can repair goods and recalls in order to help companies do better in doing their jobs. The system modeling uses UML (Unified Modeling Language) which consists of Use Case Diagrams, Activity Diagrams and Class Diagrams, with a waterfall design. The research resulted in a stock management information system program that was able to overcome the deficiencies contained in the previous system and was able to maximize the transaction data management process and help facilitate work at PT Sumber Rejeki Tirta

The Effectiveness of The Marriage Management Information System (SIMKAH) Program as an Effort to Prevent Data Manipulation

The problem in this study is that there are some Muslims who are trying to manipulate marriage data because they want to perform a nationwide legal double marriage. With this problem that occurs almost in all parts of Indonesia, the Director General of Bimas Islam issued the instruction number DJ.II/369 of 2013 on the implementation of the Marriage Management Information System (SIMKAH) in the Office of Religious Affairs (KUA) sub-district The problem in this study is that there are some Muslims who try to manipulate marriage data because they want to perform a nationwide legal double marriage. However, when using the SIMKAH application, there are also recurring server errors caused by dense access to the central SIMKAH server. The purpose of this study is to describe the effectiveness of the Marriage Management Information System Program (SIMKAH) to prevent data manipulation in the Religious Affairs Office (KUA) of Kefamenanu City District, TTU Regency. This research is a descriptive research with a qualitative approach, so the technical data analysis is presented in the form of a presentation or overview of the findings in the field, both in the form of data and information from interviews and other documents. The results of the research in the field show that since the use of SIMKAH application, KUA Kefamenanu Municipality recorded as many as 18 data manipulation experiments conducted in 2018-2020. This SIMKAH application is very effective in the effort to prevent manipulation of marriage data, because the SIMKAH application has been linked to the data of DUKCAPIL, so that only by entering the NIK of the bride and groom, all the data will appear automatically, starting from name, birthplace, date, address, parents' name and marital status. Future brides whose dates are married will need to provide a divorce certificate to register a second marriage, which will be uploaded to the SIMKAH application. If the person cannot provide the divorce certificate, the marriage registration process will not proceed.

Polytechnic Management Information System For Academic Service Quality Improvement (Analytical Descriptive at the Study Program Level at the Bandung State Polytechnic)

The Management Information System (MIS) in Higher Vocational Education such as Polytechnics functions to coordinate and monitor the planning, implementation, and evaluation of education activities, especially at the study program level. The current MIS serves BAAK’s data and information needs, reporting for internal management and providing PD-DIKTI Database. MIS has not fully served the needs of internal customers. The aim of this research is to describe in depth the process of planning and evaluating MIS at the study program level. This research is limited to MIS academic services and support preparation for study program’s accreditation of BAN-PT. The theoretical study is supported by theological foundation of Al Qur’an and Hadits, the philosophical constructivism and the theory of Total Quality of Management (TQM). This research uses a qualitative descriptive approach, explore deeply into the data and information needs for students, lecturers, study program, and BAAK. The informant involved internal Polban namely BAAK’s person, head of department and study program, lecturers and students, reviewing statute documents, strategic plans, academic regulation, laws and government’s regulations related to polytechnic’s management. This research reveals that the current MIS program is not based on customer’s needs yet by paying attention to business processes in planning, implementing, and evaluating teaching and learning process. MIS in implemented stage solely for BAAK needs, does not yet serve data needs for study programs, lecturers and students, including not yet supports the preparations of program study’s accreditation by BAN-PT. Customers are still difficult to get the information needed. The results of the evaluation show that there is a gap between data and information due to several inhibiting factors and a management system that is not yet based on complete data. The novelty of this research is MIS which is integrated with the current management system. MIS is designed comprehensively, not partially on project based. The conclusion is that the MIS program must be designed in the form of grand design that maps all data and information needs for internal and external customers which is customers oriented. MIS implantation will be successful if it is supported by socialization for customers, integrating existing MISs including databases and online communication networks, adequacy of MIS infrastructure include hardware, bandwidth capacity and high speed accessibility of information.

Human-Computer Interaction Design for Emerging Technologies

This article presents a multifaceted case for the inclusion of the important Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) subject matter at both the graduate and undergraduate levels of the Association of Information Systems (AIS) model curricula. Based on the presentations and discussions during a panel at the 2003 Americas Conference on Information Systems (AMCIS), we first present the rationale for incorporating HCI materials in Management Information Systems (MIS) curricula. Second, we present a list of relevant and important HCI knowledge and skills that our students need for effective careers. Third, given the limited number of credit hours available to each MIS program, we explore several strategies and options for the integration of HCI into current and future MIS courses. Finally, drawing upon teaching experiences of the authors, we provide pedagogical suggestions for teaching HCI to undergraduate and graduate students.

EVALUASI PENERAPAN SISTEM INFORMASI MANAJEMEN PUSKESMAS (SIMPUS) DENGAN METODE HOT-FIT DI PUSKESMAS GATAK

Information system evaluation is the process of knowing the extent of the information system. From a preliminary study of researchers in the health center gatak about the number of human resources has been found that the lack of human resources is competent in the it field, not all officers understand the use of the Health Center Management Information System (HCMIS), sometimes an error server causes a breakdown in service processes. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the application of Health Center Management Information System in the health center gatak and know the use of quality services indicator Health Center Management Information System by explaining the compatible systems component that is human, technology and organization. This type of research is a descriptive analytic study with a qualitative approach. Research subject exist six is the head of medical records, one operator polyclinic, Hcmis coordinator, one Hcmis operator, head of the medical center, and one pharmacist. The sample retrieval technique used is purposive sampling. The results of this study, is known to what extent the Health Center Management Information System program is running, to provide input for an evaluation at health center gatak for the front because human, technology, and organization compatibility really does affect information systems. It is hoped that there will be periodic training so that the implementation of Health Center Management Information System use becomes easier.

The Comparison of Condition Evaluation of Siak II Steel Frame Bridge between the FCM Method and the Bridge Management System

An accurate bridge condition evaluation system is the main factor of a bridge maintenance management. The Government of Indonesia has a bridge evaluation guide based on Australian rules namely the Bridge Management System. In this method, a visual field check is performed to determine the value of the bridge condition and then analyzed by using the bridge management information system program (sim-ibms) through a technical screening process. By using this method, it can be determined several actions are needed to be reported that the bridge is safe or damaged. But this method has been used for 25 years by Indonesia. Nowadays, research and methods are developed to evaluate the condition of bridges, such as the Fracture Critical Member (FCM) method. This method can directly measure displacement through computer programs based on the traffic volume. The evaluation conducted in two ways such are numerical methods with computer programs and visual bridge surveys. Numerical analysis is performed to estimate the critical elements of the bridge which will then evaluated visually. This research aims to compare the condition evaluation of steel frame bridge of Siak II regarding the level of damage and bridge repairing period to obtain appropriate maintenance.

Penerapan Sistem Informasi Manajemen Keluarga Berencana Pada Badan Kependudukan Keluarga Berencana Daerah

Regional Population Family Planning Board is an institution / agency that functions to control the population by providing information on contraceptives to the community to form family planning. Family Planning is a government program designed to balance the needs of life and population. The family planning program is carried out by the government so that the family as the smallest unit of national life accepts the Norms of a Happy and Prosperous Small Family which is oriented towards balanced growth. To support this goal, it is necessary to collect data on fertile age couples. The fertile age couples data collection activity that was previously carried out manually is an administrative process as well as routine activities carried out. Based on the reality on the ground, the fertile age couples data collection which is carried out manually is deemed ineffective and inefficient. Therefore, it is necessary to implement a Family Planning Management Information System, among others, for online fertile age couples data collection with the aim of creating transparency in fertile age couples data and facilitating data collection on participants of fertile, targeted, and quality family planning couples. The place of research is the Regional Population Family Planning Board Curugkembar Sukabumi District. From the results of the application of the Family Planning Management Information System, it can be concluded that: The application of a Web-based Family Planning Management Information System at the Regional Family Planning Population Board, facilitates and speeds up data processing. The system also allows setting the service schedule and control. In designing a web-based Management Information System program, it minimizes the possibility of errors in the data entry process for fertile age couples on family planning. With the implementation of this Management Information System, delays in making reports will be minimized every month.

Implementation Level of Health Management Information System Program in Governmental Hospitals of Ethiopia

Background: The Ethiopian Health Management Information System (HMIS) has been implemented since 2008 to improve the provision of health services, and ultimately, to improve health status of the population. Currently, information revolution is one of the transformation agenda in Ethiopia. Ironically, as in many low-income countries, lack of reliable data and grossly inadequate appreciation and use of available information for planning and management of health services were also true for the HMIS of Ethiopia. This, therefore, to assess the level of implementation HMIS program and utilization of data generated in governmental hospitals of western Oromia, Ethiopia. Methods and Material: The study was conducted in seven randomly selected Western Oromia Hospitals. A descriptive facility based cross-sectional study design with quantitative and qualitative data collection method was employed. The final sample size was calculated to be 620. The samples were selected by simple random sampling technique. The collected data was checked for any inconsistencies and analyzed by fitting multivariate logistic regression in SPSS version 17.0 statistical package. Result: Of the total 620 sampled population, 569 participated with an overall response rate of 91.8%. Of the total respondents, 504 (88.6%) were ever implemented HMIS tools to collect patients data in their respective hospital. Of which, only 85 (16.9%) perceived that they regularly analyze the collected data into meaningful information. Despite the inspiring message by H. E. Dr. Kesetebirhan Admasu former Minister, Federal Ministry of Health, Ethiopia “….health information is much more than collecting figures. Data have no value in themselves; value and relevance come after data management and analysis…the process whereby data are transformed into information and knowledge for action.” In this study, only 221 (43.8%) reported they used HMIS generated information for a different actions in their respective hospitals. This study revealed that the major challenges for consistent implementation and use of HMIS were incomplete data filling 174 (34.5%) followed by a shortage of trained human power 158 (31.3%) in HMIS. Furthermore, there was statistically significant association between consistent implementation of HMIS program with presence of HMIS reporting format, regular monitoring and evaluation, trained staffs and having regular feedback. Conclusions: In this study, more than three-fourths of participants perceived they were ever implemented HMIS to generate information. But, less than half of participants reported they used the output of HMIS generated information for reporting, planning and decision making at local level.

Out of the Fog – A Program Design for Understanding Alternative Career Choices: Examples in Management Information Systems and Operations Management

Management information systems (MIS) is typically not the most popular major for students in business administration because, for one, incoming undergraduate business students are often unaware of what studying MIS entails and what career opportunities await those who choose this major. Another major with similar problems is operations and supply management (OPS). Whereas incoming students have some preconceived notion of what the marketing or finance field is about, they tend to be left in the fog when it comes to having a corresponding idea about MIS and OPS. In this paper, we describe the approach we have taken to remedy this situation at our university. Essentially, we developed short, “painless”, enjoyable, one-credit pass/fail courses made available to students pursuing a BS degree in business administration who have yet to decide on a specific major (concentration). After four years, the courses have proven to be remarkably successful. We describe our approach to help not only other MIS and OPS programs but also other fields seeking to help students make good major/career choices.

Recruiting MIS Minors: The Impact Of In-Depth Database Exposure In The Accounting Information Systems Course

This study empirically examines the possible relationships between the accounting majors in-depth exposure of database knowledge and their willingness to expand their knowledge beyond the required Accounting Information Systems (AIS) course by taking additional classes leading to a Management Information Systems (MIS) minor. Our empirical results suggest that in-depth database exposure in AIS classes has a positive impact on accounting students interest in pursuing an MIS minor. The findings of this study encourage the collaboration between MIS and accounting faculty in developing AIS courses to include in-depth database knowledge content. Such collaboration can benefit both accounting and MIS programs.

Assurance of Learning in the MIS Program

ABSTRACTThis article describes the development of a systematic and practical methodology for assessing program effectiveness and monitoring student development in undergraduate decision sciences programs. The model we present is based on a student's progression through learning stages associated with four key competencies: technical, analytical, communicative, and managerial. Key learning activities are embedded in major courses, resulting in clear and documented demonstrated abilities from the student. The work is based upon what is formally known about student outcomes assessment and input from our own Management Information Systems (MIS) program stakeholders and accrediting bodies. The results of the assurance of learning model can be, in turn, used to refine curriculum and to meet accreditation standards.

An Information Technology Based Instructional Model for Effective Learning

This paper presents an information technology based instructional model for effective learning in management information systems programs and modules for students in undergraduate education. This model is primarily centered on the traditional in-class learning model. Information technology is used in a unique and novel way in order to create a learning environment which not only engages students in the learning process but also enhances their problems solving skills, analysis and decision making abilities. The model embeds information technology in projects in order to hide complexities but without compromising achievement of learning objectives. It also uses information technology in a simulation mode in order to demonstrate key concepts or learning themes, to simulate main themes presented in case studies and to simulate problems behaviors. The model employs other creative techniques in order to deliver its overall goals.

Peer‐to‐Peer Instruction in a Programming Course

The way programming is taught—individual students creating small, self-contained programs—and the way programming is normally accomplished—teams integrating code into complex applications, with emphasis on reuse—differ significantly (Prey, 1995). Compounding the problem, what employers want from management information systems (MIS) graduates appears to be still different. As an example, each of us participated in a different series of focus groups, consisting of dozens of information technology (IT) managers and recruiters, seeking to identify what outcomes were desired from an MIS undergraduate program. The results were strikingly similar, even though separated by nearly a decade (1992 to 2002). Employers demanded fundamental skills—communications, ability to work effectively in teams, general problem solving—skills more general than technological. The disconnect between curricula, practice, and job skills, summarized in Table 1, presents MIS educators with a serious dilemma. On the one hand, an MIS program is constrained to offer a substantial amount of technical content. On the other, such a program advertises itself as being in tune with the workplace. One possible way to reconcile these diverse agendas is through a course with rigorous technical content employing a pedagogy based on encouraging peer-topeer learning, a well-accepted principle of undergraduate education (Chickering & Gamson, 1987). This brief summarizes how such peer-to-peer learning has been incorporated into introductory programming courses in two separate undergraduate MIS programs.

Using Indices of Student Satisfaction to Assess an MIS Program

The purpose of this article is to demonstrate a methodology by which management information systems (MIS) alumni evaluations of the content of courses and their satisfaction with an entire MIS program can be used to assess the relevancy of an MIS curriculum. By way of clarification, an MIS program prepares its graduates to be effective in the tasks necessary to design, program, and implement systems that will provide management with timely, accurate, and useful information for decision making. This is in contrast to computer science (CS) programs that prepare their graduates to be knowledgeable in the technical aspects of computer hardware and operating systems software. This study first determines if there were any differences in the evaluations of the content of required MIS courses by alumni based on whether the graduate was using the first year on the job or in one’s current position as a frame of reference. Then a factor analysis is performed, using the scores earned by specific courses, to reduce the content value of specific courses into specific factors, thus simplifying understanding of the type of learning that is taking place. A factor analysis is performed both for course content scores during one’s first year on the job and again in one’s current position. Using a global measure of satisfaction with the entire MIS program, the course content factor scores then are correlated to a student’s satisfaction with the entire MIS program. This regression analysis is performed once again for both one’s first year on the job and in one’s current position. The implications for evaluating the effectiveness of an MIS curriculum are presented and discussed.

Alternative Approaches to Configuring Computing Labs

Introduction Within a matter of a few decades the computing function within the business, as well as non-business, environment has evolved from a support function to an essential function. One would be hard pressed to name an industry that does not rely on computer systems to support its operations and decision-making. This reliance has resulted in increased demand for personnel with computer science and management information systems backgrounds. While large colleges and universities already have had such programs in place for quite some time, many small U.S. and international colleges and universities are just undertaking such endeavors. Introducing such programs mandates that the institutions must put in place the necessary computing labs to support the programs being introduced. However, in creating such labs, the institutions usually encounter significant obstacles, such as budgetary constraints, lack of physical space to house the labs, conflicting needs of different courses, and rapid obsolescence of technology (Andleman et al., 2003; Belles & Miller, 2002; Dubose, 2000; Jones, 2000; Kumar, 2003; Lovgren, 2000; Walter, 1993; Wilson, 2002). The Management Information Systems (MIS) program at the University of Houston-Clear Lake (UHCL) faced the same daunting challenges when the program was introduced in late 90s. This paper presents the alternate computing lab configurations that were evolved to provide a cost-effective, flexible and versatile lab support for the MIS program within budgetary and space constraints. Computing Lab Support Challenges to UHCL/MIS Program University of Houston Clear Lake (UHCL) comprises four schools and offers graduate and undergraduate programs to more than 7000 students. The School of Business is the largest school in the university and includes a management information systems program, introduced in the mid 90s, as a major discipline. Since its inception, one of the challenges the UHCL/MIS department has been coping with is the lack of adequate dedicated computing labs. The problem resulted from budgetary constraints and lack of sufficient physical space to house the computing labs. A new building that is currently under construction will alleviate this problem and house four computing labs to support the MIS program. In the meantime, however, the MIS faculty and university computing personnel have had to devise some pragmatic solutions to provide computing lab support to the program in limited space and within budgetary constraints. The following section presents the three primary categories of graduate MIS courses at UHCL and describes the computing resources required by each category for the students to complete course assignments, exercises, projects, etc. These computing requirements provided the catalyst for different lab configurations. MIS Course Categories and their Computing Requirements The UHCL/MIS graduate courses can be grouped into the following three broad categories: (1) general computing courses, (2) advanced computing courses, and (3) special projects. General Computing Courses This category is comprised of courses that introduce students to a specific skill, technology or subject area. Typically, these courses don't have a pre-requisite in the same skill, technology or subject area; however, by themselves, directly or indirectly, they form pre-requisites to one or more courses. This category includes courses such as Introduction to Management Information Systems, Introduction to Computer Networks, Fundamentals of Database Design and Development, and Introduction to Business Applications Programming. Advanced Computing Courses The courses in this category include System Administration, Network Security, Advanced Database Applications, Database Administration, Advanced Business Applications Programming, and E-Commerce Applications. One of the distinguishing characteristics of these courses is that the students in these courses generally require administrative access and privileges on the workstations and servers to work on course assignments and projects. …

Determinants of Graduating MIS Students Starting Salary in Boom and Bust Job Markets

This study investigates the influence of internship experience, grade-point average (GPA), and job market on the starting salaries of management information systems (MIS) graduates. The seven-year period of the study includes the strong job market of the Internet boom, as well as the weak job market following the Internet bust. The regression results indicate that several factors are significantly related to starting salary including internship experience, GPA, job market, and size of employer. Internship experience was found to play a particularly strong role in predicting MIS starting salaries. A significant interaction effect indicates that the positive effect of internship experience is stronger during a weak job market. Graduates with internship experience also found employment more quickly. The study is based upon academic and placement data collected from 126 graduates from an AACSB accredited MIS program at Western Washington University during the years 1997-2003.
