Second primary malignancies in head and neck region: Report on two cases

Incidence of second primary malignancies is on the rise, especially in head and neck region because of increased longevity of the patients and availability of better diagnostic tools. We illustrate two such cases along with their treatment modalities. One of the patients developed malignant fibrous histiocytoma of maxilla as second malignancy which in itself is a very rare malignancy with only six cases reported in the literature so far.

Malignant Fibrous Histiocytoma of Maxilla

Malignant fibrous histiocytoma (MFH) is an aggressive soft tissue sarcoma occurring in the late adulthood. It may rarely arise as a primary neoplasm in bone, but usually in the long bones and accounts for less than 1% of the malignant tumors of bone. Its presentation in the facial bones and skull is extremely rare. Malignant fibrous histiocytoma of bone is a highly malignant tumor that recurs, metastasizes, and commonly results in death despite aggressive surgical therapy. This article documents the clinical, radiographic and pathologic features of malignant fibrous histiocytoma of maxilla in a 45-year-old female patient and discusses the considerations related to the diagnosis.

Recurrent Massive Malignant Fibrous Histiocytoma of Maxilla-A Rare Case

Abstract We present a case of recurrent extensive malignant fibrous histiocytoma of maxilla. The case is unusual because of its massive extent at presentation even after primary surgery and full course of radiotherapy and chemotherapy. Even such massive tumor can be excised successfully. Primary malignant histiocytoma is rare; and such huge tumor at presentation is also rare and favorable outcome even rarer.

Eight-year Follow-up of Malignant Fibrous Histiocytoma (Undifferentiated High-grade Pleomorphic Sarcoma) of the Maxilla: Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Malignant fibrous histiocytoma (MFH) is the most common soft tissue sarcoma of late adult life and may also arise as a primary tumor in bone. It is a rare condition that constitutes less than 1% of the malignant tumors of bone and commonly occurs in the mathaphysis of long bones of extremities such as the femur and tibia. The occurrence in the head and neck region is very rare. MFH of the jaws is a highly malignant tumor that recurs, metastasizes, and usually causes death despite aggressive surgical therapy. We present a case of MFH of maxilla with 8 years follow-up. The clinical, pathologic and radi-ographic features as well as the treatment of this case are discussed.

Malignant fibrous histiocytoma of the maxilla is a rare malignant tumor of the bone. Affection of maxilla does not occur very commonly. In this report five cases of fibrous histiocytoma have been presented along with a review of literature.
