The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the professional commitment of male nursing students in China: a descriptive comparative study.

The social culture, gender stereotypes, and social status of nursing in China impact the professional commitment of male nursing students. Increasing the professional commitment of male nursing students is critical for alleviating the shortage of nurses and addressing the gender gap. The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic has caused widespread public concern about the nursing profession and may have changed people's perception of the profession, which in turn may have a positive impact on the professional commitment of male nursing students in China. This research aimed to assess how the COVID-19 pandemic affected the professional commitment of male nursing students in China and to analyze the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on potential factors that might affect their professional commitment. A descriptive comparative study was conducted. This study involved total 368 male nursing students from five 4-year universities in Henan Province, China. 190 male nursing students were included before the COVID-19 pandemic (October to November 2019) and 178 were included after the COVID-19 pandemic (April to May 2023). The data, such as the sociodemographic characteristics and professional commitment of the two samples, were collected using a paper-and-pencil questionnaire. The research instruments used included the Professional Commitment Scale, the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support and the General Self-efficacy Scale. The data analysis employed χ2-tests, t-tests and hierarchical regression models. The proportion of Chinese male nursing students who are interested in nursing and do not intend to leave the major has increased after the pandemic (65.17% vs. 29.47%, 61.80% vs. 39.47%, respectively). Male nursing students exhibited greater professional commitment (3.30 ± 0.63) after the pandemic compared to before the pandemic (2.77 ± 0.43). The various factors, such as grade, intend to leave the major, interest in nursing, social support, and general self-efficacy, were linked to professional commitment of male nursing students in China. Male nursing students in China exhibited greater professional commitment after the pandemic. This phenomenon may be attributed to the public's increased recognition of the significance of nursing work during the pandemic, and the social status and image of nursing profession have been improved. Given the changes brought about by the COVID-19, strategies should be considered by nursing decision makers and schools to strengthen the professional commitment of male nursing students and increase the number of male nurses in the post-pandemic era.

Male Nursing Students’ Perceptions of Their Clinical Practice in Maternity Hospital at Sulaymaniyah Polytechnic University and University of Sulaymaniyah Colleges of Nursing

Background: The field of nursing remains dominated by women in many countries. Males joining the nursing and midwifery fields are becoming more numerous, and with that comes more problems during training. It is crucial to comprehend the experiences and difficulties faced by male nursing students during their nursing education, as these obstacles differ depending on the culture. Aims: The objectives of the study are to explore the perceptions of male nursing students at Sulaimani Polytechnic University and University of Sulaimani Colleges of Nursing about their clinical maternity hospital. Materials and Methods: A quantitative-descriptive design has been carried out in Sulaimani city. A non-probability, convenience sample size of (100) students was included in this study over a period of 1 month. Through an extensive review of relevant literature, a questionnaire was designed for data collection. Results: The results confirmed that male nursing students generally feel more comfortable performing procedures that do not involve exposure to private parts compared to those that do involve such exposure. The association between age groups, marital status, Residency College, and comfort level is not significant (P > 0.05). While, the P = 0.045, indicating that the association between class and comfort level is significant (P < 0.05). Conclusion: The study indicated that while the participants regarded the maternity clinical practice to be difficult, they did not show any interest in doing the maternity course. It was believed that male nursing students’ experiences with maternity clinical practice would be enhanced by acceptance and more specialized training in the clinical setting.

Exploring gender dynamics and predictors of resilience among nursing students

AimThis study examined the gender differences in contributing factors to resilience among university nursing students, controlling for the age and year of study. BackgroundResilience is a behavioral pattern learned through personal and professional experiences. Resilience is crucial in nursing education and shapes clinical proficiency and care quality that may best target during college years, preparing nursing students for their future careers. DesignCross-sectional design was used in the current study MethodsOnline surveys were used to collect the data from 623 nursing students. Validated instruments assessed resilience, decision fatigue, spiritual well-being, stress overload and spiritual and religious coping. Two regression models were generated to examine gender dynamics in predicting resilience. ResultsThe results showed that more than half of our sample has low resilience (n = 285, 45.7 %). The regression model significantly predicted more than 60 % of the variance in resilience among male nursing students (F(3, 234) = 123.87, p <.001), with religious well-being, negative spiritual and religious coping and stress overload being significant predictors in the model. The regression model predicting resilience among female nursing students showed that the model significantly predicted about half of the variance (F(4, 378) = 123.87, p <.001) with positive spiritual and religious coping, existential well-being, negative spiritual and religious coping and stress overload being significant contributors in the model. ConclusionGender disparities echoed existing literature, advocating gender-sensitive strategies in promoting resilience. Early resilience nurturing through diverse modalities can foster a resilient nursing cohort adept at tackling multifaceted healthcare challenges.

The Experiences of Male Nursing Students at North-West University: Insights from Mafikeng Campus

Men in nursing are still seen as unusual for being in a profession that the society perceives as suitable only for females. There is also the notion that men have difficulty caring, traditionally, men are resilient and often are told "men do not cry", they are not supposed to show emotion, if they do, they tend to be considered weak. Men who choose nursing as a career not only risk challenging gender-based stereotypes but gender roles defined traditionally as well. The purpose of this paper was to explore the experiences of male nursing students at NWU (MC) and the empirical evidence suggests that there is still much to be done in institutions of higher learning to enable male nursing students to also feel a sense of belonging in their respective nursing programs. The study utilized qualitative research method in exploring the issues of gender with a particular focus on masculinity and it has uncovered the concept of hegemonic masculinity. Structured interviews were employed, and the data was transcribed and analysed through content analysis. A comprehensive search of the literature from different disciplines reveals deeper issues than just the commonly held assumption that nursing is not masculine. The findings of the study suggest that Connell’s theory of masculinity should not attempt to balance supposedly masculine and feminine qualities, but to challenge the assumption that masculinities are predominantly masculine or feminine. Recommendations include institutions creating campaigns that will ensure that only students that are passionate about nursing are recruited and implement strategies that will improve the experiences of male nursing students in institutions of higher learning.

Male nursing students’ experiences of their clinical internships: A qualitative study

BackgroundNursing has traditionally been a predominantly female profession; however, there has been a gradual increase in the proportion of male nursing students in recent years. Male nursing students may encounter distinct challenges within clinical settings, potentially impacting their physical and mental well-being. AimThis study aims to explore the clinical internship experiences of male nursing students and provide them with adequate support for their successful adaptation to clinical roles. MethodsThis study used a descriptive design and qualitative approach. The participants were enrolled using a convenience sampling method. Data were collected using individual face-to-face semi-structured interviews. ResultsMale nursing students’ experiences of their clinical internships were described through the following themes: (1) dynamics of working as a nurse, (2) not just a male nursing student, (3) gender-based stereotypes, (4) balance between forte and failing, (5) difficulties and challenges when working in hospitals, and (6) lessons learned and knowledge needs. ConclusionsOur research findings have significantly enhanced our comprehension of male nursing students' experiences and offered valuable recommendations for both nursing education and clinical practice. Simultaneously, these results provide essential information support for nursing educators and hospital administrators.

Male Students' Perceptions of the Nursing Profession: A Qualitative Study.

This study aims to explore the thought, feelings and perceptions of male nursing students and male nursing professionals in the nursing profession. This present study used a qualitative research design to explore the feelings, thoughts, and opinions of male nursing students (first to fourth years) and male nursing professionals about their perception of the nursing profession. The study recruited 11 male nursing students and 11 male nursing professionals using a purposive sampling method. Data were collected via semi-structured individual interviews using qualitative open-ended inquiries consisting of seven questions. The data were analysed using thematic perspectives. The analysis revealed three themes: (a) perceiving gender varieties, (b) taking apparent advantage of masculine characteristics, and (c) taking an equal perspective. Male students' replies to their professional gender attitudes were that there was no distinct line among the gender-related advantages and disadvantages according to whether they were first to fourth-year students. Male nursing students and professionals believe that nursing is equally appropriate for both men and women, and they could employ masculine characteristics to thrive in their professional development.

Differences in Emotional Intelligence Between Male and Female Nursing Students From a Population With a Low Percentage of Male Nurses.

Poland has the largest shortage of nurses in Europe, as well as a low percentage of male nurses. Information relating to emotional intelligence has been explored to determine whether it predicts the characteristics and outcomes of qualified health professionals during their academic training and practice. This study aimed to measure differences in emotional intelligence between male and female nursing students. In this cross-sectional study, emotional intelligence was measured using the Schutte Self-Report Emotional Intelligence Test (SSEIT) in 21 male and 127 female nursing students from John Paul II University in Biała Podlaska, Poland. The raw overall scores of emotional intelligence in male and female students were similar. Differences were observed after the conversion of raw scores into normalized (sten) scores. High normalized scores (sten 8-10) of emotional intelligence had every third of male students and only 14.2% of female students. The lowest sten values of emotional intelligence in male and female students were 3 and 1, respectively. Less than 10% of male students and over 20% of female students had low normalized scores (sten ≤3) for emotional intelligence and an isolated ability to recognize emotions (factor II). The emotional intelligence expressed in normalized scores was higher in male nursing students than in female nursing students. This evidence may suggest that, at the stage of choosing a field of study, Polish male nursing students self-select for the nursing profession, at least in terms of emotional intelligence. The influx of men into the profession should be considered as a positive trend.

Purpose : The purpose of this study was to explore the meaning of male students’ life experience who started studying late for nursing. Methods : The data were collected through in-depth interviews of 8 male nursing students from 3rd to 4th grade who experienced clinical practice. Giorgi's phenomenological method was used for data analysis. Results : Findings included 7 main themes and 15 themes. The main themes concerning mature male students were ‘Entering school to start a second life.’, ‘Need to adapt to unfamiliar learning methods.’, ‘Maintaining interpersonal relationships while emphasizing courtesy.’, ‘Practice in the field with a attitude.’, ‘The reactions of those around me are varied, but they support me.’, ‘Dealing with economic difficulties.’, ‘Hope for successful employment.’ Conclusion : The results of this study provide a deeper understanding of male students’ experience who started studying late for nursing. These results can be used in the development of strategies to support mature male students in nursing.

Perception of Undergraduate Students and Faculty Members Regarding the Use of Advanced Technology and Social Media in Nursing Education

The advanced digital technology is a need of the century. The Covid-19 shifted the educational world to e-learning. The closure of institutes has extensive negative implications for healthcare industry. To assess perception of undergraduate nursing students and faculty members regarding the use of advanced and social media in education, a descriptive cross-sectional study was performed at Jinnah College of Nursing, Sohail University Karachi, Pakistan from September to October 2021. 160 male and female nursing students and 20 faculty members were included after ERC approval. Two Questionnaires, one for students and another for faculty members were used.. A significant median comparison of student’s perception score was found with program of nursing (p=0.011) and qualification (p=0.033). This study describes the positive perception of nursing students and faculty members. However, proper and planned training can create significant outcomes.

Readiness of Student Nurses in Clinical Practice Amidst COVID-19 Pandemic

The Philippine government postponed the face-to-face learning modality due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which was crucial for the application of knowledge, skills and attitude in clinical settings among nursing students. This study attempted to determine the level of readiness of the nursing students of the University of Perpetual Help System DALTA-Calamba Campus in clinical practice amidst COVID-19 pandemic. Further, the study delved into the significant difference in the level of readiness of nursing students when they are grouped according to profile. This study used a descriptive quantitative research design. The total population of the study was 23 nursing students from 3rd year and 4th year of the University of Perpetual Help System DALTA-Calamba Campus in the Academic Year 2022-2023. Purposive sampling was used in this study. The Casey-Fink Readiness for Practice Survey was adapted for this study. The findings presented that 69.6% were aged 20-22, 78.3% were female, and 60.9% belonged to third year. The overall weighted mean of 2.98 revealed that the level of readiness among nursing students was high. There was no significant difference in the level of readiness for Related Learning Experience between the nursing students with ages ranging from 20-22 and 23-25, as the computed p-value of 0.868 is greater than the 0.05 level of significance, this implied that age was not a factor in the level of readiness for the clinical practice of the nursing students. There was no significant difference in the level of readiness in clinical practice between the male and female nursing students, since the computed p-value of 1.00 is greater than the 0.05 level of significance, this inferred that sex was not a factor in the level of readiness for the clinical practice of the nursing students. Lastly, there was no significant difference in the level of readiness for clinical practice between 3rd year and 4th year nursing students, whereas the computed p-value of 0.610 is greater than the 0.05 level of significance, hence the hypothesis was accepted that there was no significant difference on the level of readiness in clinical practice when grouped according to profile.

Male Nursing Students’ Attitudes on Testicular Examination: A Cross-Sectional Study

Background This study aimed to determine knowledge and attitudes of self-identified male nursing students who are in a risky age group regarding testicular cancer and testicular self-examination. Method In this cross-sectional survey, the data was collected on 208 Turkish students between the ages of 18–22 years. The data was collected by using the Champion’s Health Belief Model Scale for Testicular Cancer Screenings and the Personal Information Form. Results The mean age of the participants in this survey conducted in the 2018–2019 academic Spring semester was 21.46 ± 2.031. The mean scores for the subscales were as follows: for perceived susceptibility 11.49 ± 4.70 (min = 5, max = 25), for seriousness 21.04 ± 6.11 (min = 7, max = 35), for self-examination benefits 10.88 ± 3.05 (min = 3, max = 15), for self-examination barriers 11.49 ± 3.75 (min = 5, max = 25) and for self-efficacy subscale 18.12 ± 5.52 (min = 6, max = 30). Also it was determined that 68.6% of the students do not know how to perform self-examination. Students’ sensitivity to testicular cancer and related screenings increased with their level of knowledge. Conclusion The results will explain how students’ health beliefs were affected by their individual knowledge level. Nursing students should be exposed to information on testicular self-examination. Therefore, some suggestions are presented according to the health belief model to increase awareness of individuals, especially in the risky group, and improve people’s health behaviors.

Employment intention and career planning of male nursing students in different levels of colleges and universities: Aqualitative study.

To explore the employment intention and career planning of male nursing students at different levels of colleges and universities and provide references for formulating individualized training content. Phenomenological research method in qualitative research. Using a phenomenological research method, 15 male nursing students from three levels of colleges and universities were interviewed in a one-to-half structure, and the data were analysed using NVivo12.0 software and the Colaizzi seven-step analysis method. Four themes and 10 sub-themes were extracted. The four themes included professional identity experience, nursing learning experience, career expectation and planning and educational needs. The 10 sub-themes included the negative effects of traditional impressions, the gradual establishment of professional identity, public health events promote professional identity, negative experiences in learning, positive growth from learning, varied career plans, career expectations and influencing factors, a reasonable schedule, diversity of content requirements and the positive effect of teaching teachers. Influenced by many factors, the employment intention and career planning of male nursing students at different higher education levels are varied. Schools and clinical practice units should strengthen the training of employment intention and career planning and make reasonable time adjustments to the training content. In total, 15 male interns accepted our interview request. We utilized their break time to conduct the interviews, resulting in significant contributions to the content of the article.

Exploring the Barriers and Coping Strategies Faced by Male Nursing Students in Japanese Nursing Education

Nursing is traditionally considered a female profession, and male nursing students face gender stereotype barriers. Most studies of male nursing students in Japan focus on their learning experiences in maternal nursing, and little is known about the experiences of male nursing students in their usual learning environment. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to explore the barriers and coping strategies of Japanese male nursing students in nursing education, including classroom and practical training. A qualitative descriptive design was used to study 20 male nursing students from eight Japanese universities. Purposive sampling using the snowball method was used to recruit participants. Semi-structured interviews were used to gather data about the participants' thoughts and experiences in nursing education. All interview data were analyzed using thematic analysis. Four themes emerged from the data: (1) Nursing choices of own volition, (2) Loneliness due to the female-dominated environment and marginalization, (3) Dealing with barriers and seeking support, and (4) Positive experiences in nursing education. Male nursing students face barriers such as loneliness and feelings of alienation. Family support, mutual support among male nursing students, and the presence of role models were factors that addressed these barriers and positively influenced career choice. This research suggests that nursing educators need to understand the barriers faced by male nursing students and provide a gender-neutral learning environment for all students.

The impact of tutoring on nursing students' clinical judgment: A quasi-experimental study.

Nurses' lack of clinical judgment often leads to adverse patient outcomes due to failure to recognize clinical deterioration, intervene, and manage complications. Teaching clinical judgment through a nursing process can help nursing students provide safe and competent patient care with improved health outcomes and to pass the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN). The aim of this study was to examine the effect of tutoring on clinical judgment of undergraduate nursing students utilizing Lasater's Clinical Judgment Rubric (LCJR). This study also compared the clinical judgment of male and female nursing students and students from different semester levels. This quasi-experimental study utilized a single group pretest, posttest design. A convenience sample of n = 40 undergraduate nursing students from the Los Angeles County College of Nursing and Allied Health participated in the study. The participants underwent a pretest simulation, four sessions of the Clinical Judgment Model (CJM)-based tutoring, and a posttest simulation. The posttest clinical judgment scores (35.70 ± 3.6) were significantly different from the pretest scores (25.78 ± 5.20). The tutoring had a significant effect on the clinical judgment of nursing students t(39) = -11.64, n = 40, p < .001, at 95% CI of the mean difference. Enhancing nursing students' clinical judgment is crucial to provide high-quality, safe patient care with improved health outcomes. The CJM-based tutoring is an effective strategy for developing clinical judgment in nursing students. This new teaching approach can train students to critically think, develop clinical judgment, and prepare for the complex healthcare environment. Therefore, nurse educators should focus on integrating clinical judgment into the prelicensure nursing program curriculum as a priority.

Determinants of depression and coping strategies among nursing students after the second wave of the COVID-19 Pandemic

Background: COVID-19 pandemic led to the emergence of mental health problems such as depression and the use of maladaptive coping strategies among nursing students. This study is planned to assess the prevalence of depression and coping strategies adopted by nursing students after the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional survey was carried out among 164 nursing students in a selected nursing institution in a rural area of Northern India. Depression was assessed using the patient health questionnaire-9, whereas coping was assessed by the brief-coping orientation of problem experienced scale. Results: Mean age of the participants was 20.80±2.35 years. The mean depression score of nursing students was 6.43±4.28. Majority of the nursing students had mild depression (43.9%) and belonged to the non-depressed group (78.7%) with a PHQ-9 score &lt;9. Maladaptive coping mechanisms were chiefly utilized by male nursing students. Coping mechanisms substance use (β=0.223, p&lt;0.013) had more impact on depression, after controlling for sociodemographic variables and COVID-19-related information of nursing students. Conclusions: Minimal or mild depression is common among nursing students after the second wave of the unprecedented pandemic with adaptive coping strategies more commonly used.

Knowledge, Attitude and Practice Regarding the Factors and Management of Maternal Mortality Amongst the 2nd Year Degree and Diploma Nursing Students at a University, Windhoek, Namibia

Background: Maternal death is a major health problem in Namibia as it is the case in most countries. The rate at which women are dying due to pregnancy related causes is high and the cause as well as risk factors are not well explored. Despite the introduction of several interventions by the Ministry of Health and Social Services to prevent the maternal deaths, according to the Namibian Demographic Health Survey, the maternal mortality ratio was 249 in 1992, 271 in 2000, 449 in 2006-2007 and 385 in 2013 respectively. It was against this background that the researcher conducted this to determine the knowledge, attitude and practice regarding the factors and management of maternal mortality amongst the 2nd year degree and diploma nursing students at a university, Windhoek, Namibia. Aims: Assess the knowledge, attitude and practice of 2nd year degree nursing students and diploma nursing students at University regarding the factors and management of maternal mortality. Objectives: This project is a report of a study to determine the knowledge and practice of 2nd year diploma and degree nursing students regarding factors and their management and to evaluate the attitude and assess the practice of the 2nd year diploma and degree nursing at a University regarding factors and management of maternal mortality. Methodology: In this study Quantitative approach was used so as to collect numerical data from the participants descriptive cross-sectional design was used to obtain data. Quantitative approach is the mathematical method of measuring and describing the observation of materials or characteristics. The target population of this study was the 2nd year diploma and degree student at the University of Namibia, main campus, Windhoek. Data was collected from the 13th of August 2022 to the 12th of October 2022 and was collected online using google forms. Researcher used probability sampling approach as a process of selecting the sample from the population. Descriptive statistics was used to determine the relationships between independent and dependent variables. Results: A response rate of 54% was achieved. Out of 79 participants, 87.3% (n=69) were female and they were dominating while 12.7% (n=12) were male nursing students. All participants were Namibian. The majority of the participants had grade 12 certificate as the highest qualifications abstained. The study reveals that there was good display of knowledge, practice and attitude on the identification of factors related to maternal mortality. Conclusion: lack of knowledge, practice and attitude on identification and proper management of factors associated with maternal mortality were revealed in the study. 34.6% of the participants failed to identify puerperal sepsis as an infection that can lead to maternal mortality while 65.4% were able to identify it correctly

The Effect of Role-Modeled Professional Ethics Instruction on the Nursing and Midwifery Students' Moral Performance: A Semi-Experimental Study

Background and Objective: Professional ethics instruction could guarantee the ethical performance of nurses and midwives. This study aimed to investigate the effect of role-modeled professional ethics instruction on the moral performance of nursing and midwifery students. Materials and Methods: This semi-experimental single-group before-after study was conducted on two separate groups of nursing and midwifery students who were selected using the census method. The intervention was role-modeled professional ethics instruction in six sessions for each group (5 cases per group) in different wards. The required data were collected using the nurses' moral performance questionnaire and midwifery codes of ethics questionnaire (online version) administered before and one month after the intervention. Data were analyzed in SPSS software (version 16). Results: A total of 59 students were included in the study. There was a positive and significant correlation before and after role-modeled instruction as an intervention in terms of moral performance scores in the nursing students' group (P=0.000 r=0.554) and an insignificant positive correlation in the midwifery students' group (P=0.23 r=0.324). Furthermore, there was an insignificant poor correlation between the final scores of the ethics course and moral performance scores before and after role-modeled instruction in both groups. Male nursing students had better moral performance after the intervention, and age did not affect moral performance. Conclusion: The moral performance of nursing students increased significantly after role-modeled instruction. Further studies are recommended to investigate the effectiveness of different instructional methods on strengthening the moral performance of nursing and midwifery students.

A Hostile Environment: An Exploratory Study of Prelicensure Nursing Student Exposure to Patient Aggression.

The literature regarding the increased risk of violence toward registered nurses and health care workers is plentiful; yet, data on prelicensure nursing student exposure to violent patient behaviors are limited and did not exist for the university's nursing program. The purpose of this exploratory study was to examine nursing student exposure to patient aggression or violent behavior in a prelicensure nursing program in the Midwestern United States. The research design was an exploratory study using surveys completed by nursing students in their junior and senior years. Almost 74% of male students and 85% of female students experienced some form of verbal aggression from their patients, with a statistically significant difference between male and female nursing students on their exposure to sexual harassment. Students also experienced extreme emotions and feelings. The survey results reveal nursing students are exposed to patient aggression or violent behavior, do not feel prepared to manage these situations, and desire faculty mentoring.

How do male nursing students' voluntary activities affect their image in society?

To determine the effect of male nursing students' voluntary activities on their image in society. The role of voluntary nursing services in enhancing the visibility of nursing in society can also contribute to enhancing the image of male nurses in society. This study employed a one-group, quasi-experimental pre-post analysis design. It was carried out between September 2020 and June 2021 in the pedestrian zone, which is one of the main streets of Bartın in Turkey. Using a convenience sampling approach, tradesmen aged 18 and over operating in commercial enterprises (n=81) were asked to participate in the study. Information form and Nursing Image Scale were used to collect the research data. Results from the paired sample t test were utilized to analyse the study's data using the intervention of 'men nursing students' voluntary activities'. The total Nursing Image Scale score of the participants was statistically considerably greater after the intervention than the pre-intervention score. Based on the paired sample t test results, it was observed that the participants obtained higher scores after the intervention than before in the gender sub-dimension as well as all other sub-dimensions of the Nursing Image Scale, and these results were statistically significant. According to the findings of the study, volunteering by male nursing students improved both the profession of nursing and the perception of men in nursing in society. This study suggested that male nursing students' voluntary activities could be one of the strategies to overcome the nursing shortage due to its enhancing effect on the profession of nursing and the perception of men in nursing in society.
