Ferromagnetic Mn3+ Sawtooth Chains in A2(Mn2O)(SeO3)3 (A = K, Rb) Quaternary Selenites.

Two quaternary manganese selenites, A2(Mn2O)(SeO3)3 (A = K, Rb), have been synthesized by hydrothermal reactions. They both crystallize in a complex triclinic (P-1) structure built of Jahn-Teller (JT) distorted Mn3+O4+2 octahedra, connected into nearly isosceles [Mn3O14] triangles, themselves arranged into so-called "sawtooth (ST) chains". The K and Rb compounds show subtle variations in the orientations of the MnO4 planes inside the elementary triangles. The ST chains are structurally and magnetically isolated by SeO3 groups and alkali cations. In the ST chains, predominant ferromagnetic interactions were calculated and verified experimentally, which finally order antiferromagnetically between the chains around TN ≈ 22 K. The spin exchanges calculated by DFT + U and fitted by Monte Carlo simulations allow for the quantification of an effective "overall" model. The specific role of the μ3-O bridge on the ferromagnetic (FM) exchanges is discussed, together with spin reorientations observed in the ordered state. Magnetocrystalline anisotropy along the [110] direction stabilized by ∼50 meV per Mn by spin-orbit coupling (SOC) was found by DFT + U + SOC.

The Estimation of the Stress State of the Iron Alloy Strip Material by the Barkhausen Noise Method

This paper presents the effect of the complex strain state resulting from the asymmetric rolling of TRB products on the changes and distribution of the stress state in the material. The evaluation of the stress state in the material was based on measurements of the magnetoelastic parameter (MP) using the Barkhausen magnetic noise method. The key characteristics of the material under study that enabled the use of changes in the MP parameter to assess the stress state were ferromagnetism and a lack of texture. The first of these enabled the detection of the magnetic signals produced when a magnetic field is applied to the material, causing magnetic domains to align and sudden changes in magnetization. On the other hand, the absence of texture in the material precluded the occurrence of magnetocrystalline anisotropy, which could disturb the results of measurements of the magnetoelastic parameter in the material. In order to determine these features in the material under study, its chemical composition was determined, and a phase analysis was carried out using the X-ray diffraction method. The results of these tests showed the possibility of determining the stress state of the material by means of changes in the values of the MP parameter. On this basis, it was shown that in the TRB strips studied, there is a complex state of stress, the values of which and the nature of the changes depending on the direction of the measurements carried out, as well as on the amount of rolling reduction in the studied area of the strip.

Crystallization of Y3Fe5O12 thin films on silicon photonic waveguides using CO2 laser annealing

We report the local crystallization of Y3Fe5O12 (YIG) thin films grown on Si substrates, and SOI waveguides by CO2 laser annealing (LA). The effect of laser power and oxygen pressure on the crystal structure of YIG films was systematically studied. Laser power dominated the YIG film crystallinity, while oxygen partial pressure during LA strongly influenced the crystal grain size and magnetic anisotropy. Fully crystallized YIG thin films with pure garnet phases were fabricated by LA. The refractive index n and extinction coefficient k were comparable to thin films fabricated by rapid thermal annealing (RTA). Propagation loss measured at 1550 nm wavelength on YIG/SOI waveguides and YIG/SiN ring resonators were comparable to RTA annealed films, promising device development for silicon photonics.

Strain-induced giant enhancement and transformation of magnetocrystalline anisotropy in 1T-FeSe2 monolayer

The development of magnetic materials with large magnetic anisotropy energy (MAE) is crucial for magnetic storage and spintronics applications. The electronic structure and magnetic properties of 1T-FeSe2 monolayer have been systematically investigated by first-principles computational methods. The monolayer 1T-FeSe2 is confirmed to be a ferromagnetic semimetal with 100% spin polarization and exhibits pronounced magnetic anisotropy. It shows an easy magnetization plane in the two-dimensional plane and its MAE is as high as 8.134 meV. The MAE mainly originates from the contributions of transitions between Fe dyz and dz2, dxy and dx2−y2 orbitals, while the contributions of transitions between p x and p y, p x and p z orbitals of Se are also obvious. The biaxial strain significantly regulates the magnetic properties and electronic structures of the 1T-FeSe2 monolayer. Interestingly, the MAE increases significantly to 77.680 meV when the tensile strain increases to 3.5%, we can expect to achieve a reasonable value of MAE up to 98.951 meV by applying 5% tensile strain. In addition, the easy magnetization plane changes to perpendicular easy magnetization axis direction at −6% compressive strain or 7% tensile strain, which leads to a significant change in the band structure near the Fermi level. The 100% spin-polarized ferromagnetic semi-metallic behavior and the huge strain-induced magnetic anisotropy make the 1T-FeSe2 monolayer material promising for spintronics and magnetic data storage.

Optimizing the Sintering Conditions of (Fe,Co)1.95(P,Si) Compounds for Permanent Magnet Applications

(Fe,Co)2(P,Si) quaternary compounds combine large uniaxial magnetocrystalline anisotropy, significant saturation magnetization and tunable Curie temperature, making them attractive for permanent magnet applications. Single crystals or conventionally prepared bulk polycrystalline (Fe,Co)2(P,Si) samples do not, however, show a significant coercivity. Here, after a ball-milling stage of elemental precursors, we optimize the sintering temperature and duration during the solid-state synthesis of bulk Fe1.85Co0.1P0.8Si0.2 compounds so as to obtain coercivity in bulk samples. We pay special attention to shortening the heat treatment in order to limit grain growth. Powder X-ray diffraction experiments demonstrate that a sintering of a few minutes is sufficient to form the desired Fe2P-type hexagonal structure with limited secondary-phase content (~5 wt.%). Coercivity is achieved in bulk Fe1.85Co0.1P0.8Si0.2 quaternary compounds by shortening the heat treatment. Surprisingly, the largest coercivities are observed in the samples presenting large amounts of secondary-phase content (>5 wt.%). In addition to the shape of the virgin magnetization curve, this may indicate a dominant wall-pining coercivity mechanism. Despite a tenfold improvement of the coercive fields for bulk samples, the achieved performances remain modest (HC ≈ 0.6 kOe at room temperature). These results nonetheless establish a benchmark for future developments of (Fe,Co)2(P,Si) compounds as permanent magnets.

Static Magnetic Properties and Morphological Behaviour of Mn and Zn Substituted Ca-hexaferrite by Ceramic Technic

Synthesis of M-type hexagonal ferrite compounds, Ca(CoTi)0.5(MnZn)x/2Fe11-xO19 (x = 0.0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8, 1.0, 1.2) prepared by ceramic technic. Mn and Zn ions substituted to find the magnetic characterizationat magnetic field of 10 kOe. XRD and SEM study have been done for getting the hexagonal structure of these samples. Due to the substitution of Mn and Zn ions saturation magnetization increases and magnetocrystalline anisotropy decreases. Due to the sub-latice site distribution the variations in magnetic parameters have been observed. Because of Mn and Zn ions substitution Curie temperature decreases by weakening of superexchange interaction. These materials can be used for various applications such aspermanent magnetic material, magnetic recording media, ferrofluids, sensors, microwave absorbing materials, ceramic magnets in loud speakers and rotors in small DC motors by studying various magnetic parameters from VSM characterization.

Magnetic properties of the mixed ferrites MnZnFe2O4 and MnAl-Fe2O4: A comparative study

Nanosized particles of Mn1-xZnxFe2O4, where 0 ≤ x ≤ 1, and MnAlxFe2-xO4, where 0 ≤ x ≤ 2, were synthesized by the sol–gel combustion method and the magnetic properties of these compounds were investigated and compared. The saturation magnetization of the samples of Mn1-xZnxFe2O4 was taken from the literature and the saturation magnetization of the samples of MnAlxFe2-xO4 was estimated from the cation distribution; ferromagnetic resonance spectra were used to determine the magnetocrystalline anisotropy. The results show that the saturation magnetization and the magnetocrystalline anisotropy of Zn- and Al- doped MnFe2O4 vary over a wide range, a result that could be useful for practical applications of these materials.

Temperature dependent interfacial-coupling and magnetization reversal of La2/3Sr1/3MnO3 film with inverted hysteresis features

Temperature-dependent magnetic anisotropy and interfacial coupling of La2/3Sr1/3MnO3 (LSMO) epitaxial films with inverted hysteresis (IHLs) features are investigated using a broadband ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) spectrometer. Through the dispersion relation obtained along [100], [110] and [010] axes, a simplified method is proposed to investigation in-plane magnetic anisotropy by broadband FMR in a cryostat. According to this method, the perpendicular uniaxial anisotropy, magneto-crystalline anisotropy, and interfacial coupling between the LSMO film and hard-magnetic interface layer are investigated as a whole. The measured value of interfacial coupling is −17.6 Oe at 300 K, close to the bias field found in minor loop, i.e., −18.4 Oe. The interfacial coupling is enhanced with the dropping of temperatures, and the value of interfacial coupling changed to −112 Oe at 10 K. A Stoner-Wohlfarth-like model is employed to calculate the hysteresis loops of the films based on the measured values of in-plane magnetic anisotropy and interfacial-coupling. The calculation reveals the mechanism of magnetization reversal and the origin of IHLs found in LSMO films.

Magneto-optical detection of non-collinear magnetization states in ferromagnetic multilayers

We have experimentally studied the relationship in between non-collinear magnetization states in ferromagnetic (FM) multilayers and their resulting magneto-optical (MO) properties. Hereby, we observe that the phase of the complex-valued MO parameters are especially sensitive towards non-collinear magnetization states and enable their unambiguous detection. For the purpose of our experimental study, we designed, fabricated and characterized a set of epitaxial FM/NM/FM multilayers with in-plane uniaxial anisotropy, in which the non-magnetic (NM) interlayer thickness t was varied, so that tunable FM interlayer exchange coupling strength in between the two FM layers could be achieved. Furthermore, the two FM layers were made from different alloys, so that they exhibit different levels of magnetocrystalline anisotropy, which enables a collinear to non-collinear magnetization state transition upon applying a magnetic field H away from the in-plane easy axis for samples with sufficiently large t . Utilizing generalized MO ellipsometry, we determined the full reflection matrix R as a function of H and we observed that the phases of the complex-valued MO coefficients in R change with H in multilayers that have sufficiently weak interlayer coupling strength, i.e. large t, which can only happen if non-collinear magnetization states of varying non-collinearity occur in those samples. For samples with small t, corresponding to strongly exchange coupled FM layers, this effect is absent, consistent with the existence of collinear magnetization states in those multilayers for all H values.

Observation of Giant Topological Hall Effect in Room-Temperature Ferromagnet Cr0.82Te

Abstract Novel magnetic materials with non-trivial magnetic structures have led to exotic magnetic transport properties and significantly promoted the development of spintronics in recent years. Among them is the CrxTey family, the magnetism of which can persist above room temperature, thus providing an ideal system for potential spintronic applications. Here we report the synthesis of a new compound, Cr0.82Te, which demonstrates a record-high topological Hall effect at room temperature in this family. Cr0.82Te displays soft ferromagnetism below the Curie temperature of 340 K. The magnetic measurement shows an obvious magneto-crystalline anisotropy with the easy axis located in the ab-plane. The anomalous Hall effect can be well explained by a dominating skew scattering mechanism. Intriguing, after removing the normal Hall effect and anomalous Hall effect, a topological Hall effect can be observed up to 300 K and reach up to 1.14 µΩ cm at 10 K, which is superior to most topological magnetic structural materials. This giant topological Hall effect likely originated from the noncoplanar spin configuration during the spin flop process. Our work extends a new CrxTey system with topological non-trivial magnetic structure and broad prospects for spintronics applications in the future.

Patterned Liquid Crystal Polymer Thin Films Improved Energy Conversion Efficiency at High Incident Angles for Photovoltaic Cells.

In this report, micro-patterned silicon semiconductor photovoltaic cells have been proposed to improve the efficiency in various incident sunlight angles, using homeotropic liquid crystal polymers. The anisotropic liquid crystal precursor solution based on a reactive mesogen has good flowing characteristics. It can be evenly coated on the silicon solar cells' surface by a conventional spreading technique, such as spin coating. Once cured, the polymers exhibit asymmetric transmittance properties. The optical retardation characteristics of the coated polymer films can be eventually determined by the applicable coating and curing parameters during the processes. The birefringence of light then influences the optical path and the divergence of any encountered sunlight. This allows more photons to enter the active semiconductor layers for optical absorption, resulting in an increase in the photon-to-electron conversion, and thus improving the photovoltaic cell efficiency. This new design is straightforward and could allow various patterns to be created for scientific development. The experimental results have evidenced that the energy conversion efficiency could be improved by 2-3% for the silicon photovoltaic cells, under direct sunlight or at no inclination, when the liquid crystal polymer precursor solution is prepared at 5%. In addition, the efficiency could be much more significantly improved to 14-16% when the angle is inclined to 45°. The unique patterned liquid crystal polymer thin films provide enhanced energy conversion efficiency for silicon photovoltaic cells. The design could be further evaluated for other solar cell applications.

A Highly Optical Anisotropic Hybrid Perovskite for Efficient Manipulation of Light Polarization

AbstractOptical anisotropic (e.g., birefringent) crystals can manipulate the polarization of light and thus are widely applied in modern optical fields. Common birefringent crystals are almost exclusively limited to inorganic oxides with small birefringence. Here, a new 1D hybrid halide perovskite PZPbCl3 (PZ = phenazine) is reported, which consists of perfectly parallel Pb–Cl chains and PZ cations. Remarkably, polarized optical observations show that even a PZPbCl3 crystal with micrometer thickness can modulate the polarized light efficiently. Furthermore, PZPbCl3 exhibits exceptional birefringence up to 0.65@546 nm, which is significantly larger than that of commercial oxide crystals. According to first‐principles calculations and polarizability anisotropy analyses, it is found that this birefringence is mainly ascribed to the linear polymerization of π‐conjugated rings in PZ cations. Due to the rich physical properties and structural diversity of hybrid perovskites, it is believed that the introduction of excellent birefringence into the hybrid perovskites will bring unprecedented opportunities to the future explorations of polarization‐dependent functional materials.

Imaging Thermally Fluctuating Néel Vectors in van der Waals Antiferromagnet NiPS3.

Studying antiferromagnetic domains is essential for fundamental physics and potential spintronics applications. Despite their importance, few systematic studies have been performed on antiferromagnet (AFM) domains with high spatial resolution in van der Waals (vdW) materials, and direct probing of the Néel vectors remains challenging. In this work, we found multidomain states in the vdW AFM NiPS3, a material extensively investigated for its unique magnetic exciton. We employed photoemission electron microscopy combined with the X-ray magnetic linear dichroism (XMLD-PEEM) to image the NiPS3's magnetic structure. The nanometer-spatial resolution of XMLD-PEEM allows us to determine local Néel vector orientations and discover thermally fluctuating Néel vectors that are independent of the crystal symmetry even at 65 K, well below the TN of 155 K. We demonstrate that an in-plane orbital moment of the Ni ion is responsible for the weak magnetocrystalline anisotropy. The observed thermal fluctuations of the antiferromagnetic domains may explain the broadening of magnetic exciton peaks at higher temperatures.

Giant Terahertz Birefringence in an Ultrathin Anisotropic Semimetal.

Manipulating the polarization of light at the nanoscale is key to the development of next-generation optoelectronic devices. This is typically done via waveplates using optically anisotropic crystals, with thicknesses on the order of the wavelength. Here, using a novel ultrafast electron-beam-based technique sensitive to transient near fields at THz frequencies, we observe a giant anisotropy in the linear optical response in the semimetal WTe2 and demonstrate that one can tune the THz polarization using a 50 nm thick film, acting as a broadband wave plate with thickness 3 orders of magnitude smaller than the wavelength. The observed circular deflections of the electron beam are consistent with simulations tracking the trajectory of the electron beam in the near field of the THz pulse. This finding offers a promising approach to enable atomically thin THz polarization control using anisotropic semimetals and defines new approaches for characterizing THz near-field optical response at far-subwavelength length scales.

Coercivity enhancement and microstructure optimization of Nd-Fe-Co-B magnets by Dy70Al10Cu20 grain boundary diffusion

The effect of grain boundary diffusion on the magnetic properties and microstructure of Nd-Fe-Co-B sintered magnets is investigated using Dy70Al10Cu20 alloy as the diffusion source. After the secondary annealing of the Nd-Fe-Co-B sintered magnet (Hcj = 7.94 kOe), its coercivity is substantially increased to 13.10 kOe. Following post-diffusion annealing, the coercivity of the sintered magnet significantly increased to 20.86 kOe. Microstructure analysis revealed that after the second annealing, the main phase grains in the magnet were connected but lacked thin intergranular phases. The distribution of Co was uneven, with an abundance of soft magnetic phases rich in Co, which was not conducive to improving coercivity. After diffusion, Dy formed a shell structure with high magnetic crystal anisotropy on the outer side of the main phase grains, leading to a significant increase in coercivity. Al and Cu entered the interior of the magnet, reducing the melting point of the grain boundary phase and promoting the uniform distribution of Co through the flow of the liquid phase. A large amount of thin continuous intergranular phase is generated inside the magnet, which helps reduce the exchange coupling between hard magnetic grains. The experimental results indicate that the Dy-Al-Cu alloy can effectively enhance the grain boundary structure of Nd-Fe-Co-B magnets, reduce the abundance of Co-rich phases, and improve the coercivity of the magnet.

Single-step generation of 1D FeCo nanostructures

Magnetic one-dimensional structures are attractive nanomaterials due to the variety of potential applications they can provide. The fabrication of bimetallic 1D structures further expands the capabilities of such structures by tailoring the magnetic properties. Here, a single-step template-free method is presented for the fabrication of 1D FeCo alloy nanochains. In this approach, charged single-crystalline FeCo nanoparticles are first generated by the co-ablation of pure Fe and Co electrodes under a carrier gas at ambient pressures and attracted to a substrate using an electric field. When reaching the surface, the particles are self-assembled into parallel nanochains along the direction of an applied magnetic field. The approach allows for monitoring the self-assembly particle by particle as they are arranged into linear 1D chains with an average length controlled by the deposited particle concentration. Magnetometry measurements revealed that arranging nanoparticles into nanochains results in a 100% increase in the remanent magnetization, indicating significant shape anisotropy. Furthermore, by combining x-ray microscopy and micromagnetic simulations, we have studied the local magnetization configuration along the nanochains. Our findings show that variations in magnetocrystalline anisotropy along the structure play a crucial role in the formation of magnetic domains.

Effect of Ga substitution on grain orientation and magnetostrictive properties of polycrystalline CoFe2O4 ceramics prepared by the solid-state method

As a kind of magnetostrictive ceramics, cobalt ferrites are widely concerned because of its large magnetostriction and high resistivity, which are ideal for high-frequency applications. But, the high driving magnetic field due to the high magnetocrystalline anisotropy limits the practical applications of cobalt ferrites, thus, it is a still a challenge to find a balance between high magnetostriction properties and low driving magnetic fields. In this work, we investigated the effects of partially substitution of Ga3+ for Fe3+ on grain orientation and magnetic properties, attempting to maintain high magnetostriction while reducing the driving magnetic field. The CoFe2-xGaxO4 (x=0, 0.05, 0.1, 0.15) with single-phase spinel structure were prepared by the conventional solid-state method. The saturation magnetization MS increased with the increase of Ga concentration, meanwhile the coercivity Hc and magnetocrystalline anisotropy constant K1 significantly decreased, which indicates the better soft magnetic characteristics of the Ga-doped cobalt ferrites. The oriented CoFe2-xGaxO4 samples were obtained using magnetic field orientation technique during the powder forming process. The <001> preferred orientation was achieved in CoFe2O4 samples. However, the <001> orientation degree decreased with the substitution of Ga, and the preferred orientation has changed into <111> at x=0.15. The Ga substitution affected the magnetocrystalline anisotropy and grain orientation, thereby affecting the magnetostrictive properties. As for the non-oriented samples, although the maximum magnetostrictive strain slightly decreased with Ga substitution, while there was a significant drop in the magnetostrictive saturation field. However, the magnetostriction of the oriented samples decreased significantly with the substitution of Ga due to the change of grain orientation from <001> to <111>.

Effect of rare earth (Ho and Er) co-substitution on the magnetic and dielectric properties of nanocrystalline cobalt ferrites

Nanocrystalline cobalt ferrites co-substituted with rare earth Ho and Er (CoFe2-2xHoxErxO4, 0 ≤x≤0.10) have been synthesized via the sol-gel method. X-ray Diffraction (XRD) confirmed the single-phase spinel structure with reduced crystallite sizes (65 nm–12 nm), micro-strain (ε) and increased lattice constant (a) with Ho–Er co-substitution. Rietveld refinement and theoretical computation revealed Ho and Er occupancy at octahedral sites and Fe and Co ions redistribution between the tetrahedral and octahedral sites. Infrared spectroscopy, Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM), Energy Dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) supported the formation of the desired spinel structure, aggregated spherical morphology, chemical stoichiometry and elemental states. Magnetic measurements showed a systematic decrease in saturation magnetization (Ms), magnetocrystalline anisotropy (K1), coercivity (Hc) and Curie temperature (Tc) with Ho–Er co-substitution. Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) exhibited asymmetric resonance peaks, reduced resonance field (Hr), linewidth (ΔHpp) and deviation in Lande g values. Impedance spectroscopy revealed two conduction mechanisms (holes and electrons) with distinct activation energies (EaI and EaII). Modulus spectrum analysis confirmed the thermally activated sample-electrode effects and the Nyquist plots indicated the dominant contribution of the grain boundary resistance to the conduction process. A notable enhancement in the dielectric constant (ε′) was observed with Ho–Er co-substitution. The ac conductivity (σac) followed the Jonscher Power Law (JPL). The temperature-dependent frequency exponent s(T), suggests the existence of two conduction mechanisms: non-overlapping small polaron tunneling (NSPT) and correlated barrier hopping (CBH).

Effect of heavy Dy3+ doping on the magnetic, structural, morphological, and optical characteristics of CuDyxFe2-xO4 nanoparticles

The present study explored the impacts of dysprosium (Dy³⁺) doping on the structure, optical, and magnetic characteristics of CuDyxFe2-xO4 nanospinel ferrites synthesized via a hydrothermal method. X-ray diffraction revealed a tetragonal spinel matrix with increasing Dy³⁺ content, accompanied by a secondary Dy2O3 phase at higher dopant levels for x ≥ 0.1. Crystallite size and microstrain increased with doping, while infrared spectroscopy confirmed the spinel structure and distinct vibrational modes. Interestingly, saturation magnetization displayed a non-monotonic trend, first rising due to spin polarization and cation redistribution, then decreasing with higher Dy³⁺ content attributable to the Dy2O3 phase and larger grains. Coercivity exhibited a maximum at x = 0.2, reflecting the interplay between magnetocrystalline anisotropy, canting angles, and domain wall pinning. These findings highlight the complex interplay between Dy³⁺ doping and the resulting properties, paving the way for tailored CuDyxFe2-xO4 nanospinel ferrites functionalities. . Further research involving advanced techniques and targeted dopant levels holds promise for optimizing properties for diverse technological applications such as magnetic storage, microwave devices, sensors, and hyperthermia treatment.

Obtaining extremely low coercivity of high Bs FeCoBSiCPCu nanocrystalline alloys through modulation of magnetic anisotropy

Longitudinal magnetic field annealing is utilized for modifying the magnetic anisotropy and enhancing the magnetic softness of Fe75Co8(B10Si3C3P1)1-x/17Cux (x = 0.5, 0.75, 1, 1.25) nanocrystalline alloys. All of the magnetic field-annealed nanocrystalline alloys with Cu content more than 0.5 at.% exhibit significantly improved soft-magnetic properties, including high saturation magnetic flux density up to 1.87 T, effective permeability of 13000-16000 under the condition of 1 A/m and 1 kHz, coercivity as low as 1.6 A/m, and core loss of 0.11-0.45 W/kg under the condition of 1.0 T and 50 Hz. The application of a magnetic field promotes the nucleation and inhibits the growth of grains, leading to an increase in the number density of nanocrystals and the crystalline volume fraction, and a reduction in the grain size. The magnetic field annealing reduces the effective magneto-crystalline anisotropy energy to 2-4 J/m3, and induces longitudinal magnetic anisotropy with anisotropy energy density of 400-900 J/m3 which shows dependence on the crystalline volume fraction. The field-induced magnetic anisotropy dominates over the random local magnetic anisotropies, and results in the formation of regular magnetic domains aligned longitudinally, pinning-free domain wall displacement, and thus enhanced soft-magnetic properties.
