Magnetic Exchange Coupling in Zeolite Copper Dimers and Its Contribution to Methane Activation.

The highly reactive binuclear [Cu2O]2+ active site in copper zeolites activates the inert C-H bond of methane at low temperatures, offering a potential solution to reduce methane flaring and mitigate atmospheric methane levels. While substantial progress has been made in understanding the activation of methane by this core, one critical aspect, the active site's spin, has remained undetermined. In this study, we use variable-temperature, variable-field magnetic circular dichroism spectroscopy to define the ground state spin of the [Cu2O]2+ active sites in Cu-CHA and Cu-MFI. This novel approach allows for site-selective determination of the magnetic exchange coupling between the two copper centers of specific [Cu2O]2+ cores in a heterogeneous mixture, circumventing the drawbacks of bulk magnetic techniques. These experimental findings are coupled to density functional theory calculations to elucidate magnetostructural correlations in copper zeolites that are different from those of homogeneous binuclear Cu(II) complexes. The different spin states for the [Cu2O]2+ cores have different reactivities governed by how methane approaches the active site. This introduces a new understanding of zeolite topological control on active site reactivity.

Magneto-structural correlation in lanthanide luminescent [2.2]paracyclophane-based single-molecule magnets.

The association of lanthanide ions and paracyclophane derivatives has been very scarcely reported in the literature. In this study, elaboration of five coordination lanthanide complexes involving the 1,4(1,4)-dibenzenacyclohexaphane-12,43-diylbis(diphenylphosphine oxide) ligand (L) was achieved with the determination of single-crystal X-ray diffraction structures of four mononuclear complexes of formula [Ln(hfac)3(L)] (hfac- = 1,1,1,5,5,5-hexafluoroacetylacetonate) (Ln = Dy(III) (1-Dy) and Yb(III) (2-Yb)) and [Ln(tta)3(L)] (tta- = 2-tenoyl-trifluoroacetylacetonate) (Ln = Dy(III) (3-Dy) and Yb(III) (4-Yb)) and one dinuclear complex [Na(Dy2(hfac)6(L)2)](BArF) (BArF- = tetrakis[3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl]borate) (5-Dy). The compounds were characterized using elemental analysis, IR spectroscopy, DC and AC magnetic measurements and photophysical investigations. L is an efficient organic chromophore for the sensitization of both visible Dy(III) (1-Dy) and near-infrared Yb(III) (2-Yb and 4-Yb) luminescence. The combination of excitation and emission spectra allowed the determination of the crystal field spitting of both the 2F7/2 ground state and 2F5/2 excited state for 2-Yb and 4-Yb. Moreover, 3-Dy and the two Yb(III) derivatives displayed field-induced single-molecule magnet (SMM) behaviour with slow magnetic relaxation occurring through the Raman process only for 2-Yb and 4-Yb, whereas a combination of Orbach and Raman processes was identified for 3-Dy.

Single-molecule magnet behavior in heterometallic decanuclear [Ln2Fe8] (Ln = Y, Dy, Ho, Tb, Gd) coordination clusters.

Five decanuclear lanthanide-iron clusters, formulated as [Ln2Fe8(hmp)10(μ2-OH)4(μ3-OH)2(μ4-O)4(H2O)6]·6ClO4·xH2O (x ≈ 8, Ln = Y for 1; x ≈ 6, Ln = Dy for 2; x ≈ 6, Ln = Ho for 3; x ≈ 7, Ln = Tb for 4; x ≈ 7, Ln = Gd for 5, Hhmp = 2-(hydroxymethyl)pyridine), have been synthesized and structurally characterized. Single-crystal structural analysis reveals that the cluster consists of six face-sharing defective cubane units. Dynamic magnetic investigations indicated that cluster 2 exhibits single-molecule magnet behavior under a zero dc field eliciting an effective energy barrier of Ueff = 17.76 K and a pre-exponential factor of τ0 = 7.93 × 10-8 s. Investigation of the performance of a series of FeIII-DyIII SMMs indicates that the relatively low energy barrier in 2 is associated with the weak ferromagnetic coupling between FeIII and DyIII ions, while the strength of ferromagnetic interaction in these clusters is mainly related to the bond distances between DyIII and O atoms coordinated to FeIII ions. Clusters 3 and 4 exhibit similar dual relaxation pathways under their respective optimal external applied dc field, where the direct relaxation process occurs in the low-frequency area, which impedes the extraction of the Ueff, while the secondary relaxation process appears at a higher frequency, which is probably a connection with intermolecularly driven relaxation. Our findings offer a magneto-structural correlation model for further investigating the single-molecule magnet behavior in lanthanide-iron systems.

Semiempirical Magnetostructural Correlation for High-Nuclearity MnIII-Oxo Complexes: Accommodation of Different Relative Jahn-Teller Axis Orientations.

The previous development of a magnetostructural correlation (MSC) for polynuclear FeIII/oxo clusters has now been extended to one for polynuclear MnIII/oxo clusters. A semiempirical model estimating each pairwise Mn2 exchange constant (Jij) from the Mn-O bond lengths and Mn-O-Mn angles has been formulated based on the angular overlap model. The extra complication, compared with the FeIII/oxo MSC, of different relative orientations of the Jahn-Teller distortion axes typical of high-spin MnIII in near-octahedral geometry was accommodated by developing a separate MSC variant for each possible situation. The final coefficients of the three MSC variants were determined by using reliable crystal structure data and experimentally determined Jij values from the literature. The estimated JMSC values from the new MnIII/oxo MSC have been employed to successfully rationalize the magnetic properties of a number of MnIII clusters in the nuclearity range Mn3-Mn10. These properties include relative spin vector alignments in the ground state, the presence of spin frustration effects, and the resulting overall ground state spin. In addition, the JMSC values can be used to simulate the direct-current magnetic susceptibility versus temperature data and provide realistic input values for fits of these data to minimize false-fit problems. A protocol for the use of the new MSC is also reported.

A Heterometallic Porphyrin Dimer as a Potential Quantum Gate: Magneto-Structural Correlations and Spin Coherence Properties.

In the development of two-qubit quantum gates, precise control over the intramolecular spin-spin interaction between molecular spin units plays a pivotal role. A weak but measurable exchange coupling is especially important for achieving selective spin addressability that allows controlled manipulation of the computational basis states |00⟩ |01⟩ |10⟩ |11⟩ by microwave pulses. Here, we report the synthesis and Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) study of a heterometallic meso-meso (m-m) singly-linked VIV O-CuII porphyrin dimer. X-band continuous wave EPR measurements in frozen solutions suggest a ferromagnetic exchange coupling of ca. 8 ⋅ 10-3 cm-1 . This estimation is supported by Density Functional Theory calculations, which also allow disentangling the ferro- and antiferromagnetic contributions to the exchange. Pulsed EPR experiments show that the dimer maintains relaxation times similar to the monometallic CuII porphyrins. The addressability of the two individual spins is made possible by the different g-tensors of VIV and CuII -ions, in contrast to homometallic dimers where tilting of the porphyrin planes plays a key role. Therefore, single-spin addressability in the heterometallic dimer can be maintained even with small tilting angles, as expected when deposited on surface, unlocking the full potential of molecular quantum gates for practical applications.

A serial of cyanide-bridged CrIII/I[sbnd]CuII complexes from 0D cluster to 2D network: Synthesis, crystal structure and magnetic property

One cyanide-bridged heterometallic achiral complex and two pairs of enantiomers {[Cu(Chxn)2Cr(bpb)(CN)2]ClO4}·CH3OH·H2O (1), {[Cu(S,S/R,R-Chxn)2Cr(CN)5(NO)]2[Cu(S,S/R,R-Chxn)2(H2O)2]}n·3nH2O (2, 3) {[Cu(S,S/R,R-Chxn)2]3[Cr(CN)5(NO)]2}n·5nH2O (4, 5). (bpb = bis(2-benzimidazolyl)pyridine dianion, Chxn = 1,2-diaminocyclohexane) have been assembled from two cyano containing Cr(I) or Cr(III) building blocks, K[Cr(bpb)(CN)2] and K3[Cr(CN)5(NO)], and racemic or chiral copper(II) compounds under the different reaction conditions. The complexes have been characterized by element analysis, IR spectra, the circular dichroism (CD) spectrum, powder and single crystal X-ray diffraction. X-ray structural analyses revealed that the divers structure types of complexes 1–5 ranging from discrete polynuclear entity (1), 1D coordination polymer (CP) anionic chain (2, 3) to neutral 2D CP network (4, 5), indicating clearly the important role of the building block and preparation method on tuning the structure of the target cyanide-bridged complexes. The magnetic properties for the reported complexes have been experimentally studied and theoretically simulated, disclosing the ferromagnetic coupling between the Cr(III) ion and Cu(II) ion and the rare antiferromagnetic interaction within Cr(ICu(II) unit through the cyanide bridge, respectively. Furthermore, the magnetic coupling nature has been analyzed based-on the magneto-structural correlation.

Alkyl Chains Modulated Magnetization Dynamics of Mononuclear Trigonal Prismatic CoII Complexes.

Four benzeneboron-capped mononuclear CoII complexes with different alkyl substitutions on the fourth position of phenylboronic acid were obtained. The CoII ions are all wrapped by the pocket-like ligands and located in trigonal prismatic coordination geometries. Alternating-current magnetic susceptibility measurements reveal that they show different magnetization dynamics, such as distinct relaxation rates at the same temperature, the faster QTM rates for the ethyl and propyl substituted complexes, as well as different relaxation processes. Magneto-structural correlation study reveals that the various deviations of coordination geometry of CoII ion, diverse crystal packings and possible different vibration modes of substituents caused by modifying alkyl chains are the key factors affecting the magnetization dynamics. This work demonstrates that the alkyl chains even locating far away from the metal center can have a large impact on the magnetic behavior of the CoII complex with a very rigid coordination geometry, offering a new perspective towards transition metal based single-molecule magnets.

The nature of the atomic-scale Invar effect in Fe-based bulk metallic glasses

Fe-based bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) universally show an anomalously low coefficient of thermal expansion below their Curie temperature. This effect is known as the Invar effect, is rarely seen in crystalline materials and also vanishes after the crystallization of BMGs. While it is known that Co and Ni reduce the strength of the Invar effect, the influence of other elements is unknown. Moreover, it is unclear to what extent structural modifications and magnetic interactions of minor alloying elements contribute to the Invar effect. Using synchrotron-based in-situ X-ray diffraction, we show that (Fe71B24RE5)96Nb4 BMGs with the rare earth elements (RE) = Tm, Er, Ho also reveal the Invar effect. This can be seen in the diffraction peaks that shift in accordance with the macroscopically measured thermal expansion. In comparison to a similar FeBYNb BMG, the Invar effect is not influenced by the substitution of Y with RE. This suggests that the minor alloying elements do not contribute to the Invar effect. Neither their influence on the atomic arrangement, the (anti)ferromagnetic interactions of the 4f electrons of the RE elements nor paramagnetic interactions such as those from Y and Nb have an influence on the Invar effect. These elements only serve to increase the glass-forming ability and the formation of a disordered Fe network but do not contribute themselves to the Invar effect. Additionally, their (anti-)ferromagnetic interaction with Fe does not influence the magneto-structural correlations of the Fe network. Therefore, the Invar effect in these materials not only originates at the atomic scale but can be attributed solely to the magnetic interaction in the disordered Fe network.

Trityl-Based Lanthanide-Supramolecular Assemblies Exhibiting Slow Magnetic Relaxation.

The triphenylmethane (trityl) group has been recognized as a supramolecular synthon in crystal engineering, molecular machine rotors and stereochemical chirality inductors in materials science. Herein we demonstrate for the first time how it can be utilized in the domain of molecular magnetic materials through shaping of single molecule magnet (SMM) properties within the lanthanide complexes in tandem with other non-covalent interactions. Trityl-appended mono- (HL1 ) and bis-compartmental (HL2 ) hydrazone ligands were synthesized and complexated with Dy(III) and Er(III) triflate and nitrate salts to generate four monometallic (1-4) and two bimetallic (5, 6) complexes. The static and dynamic magnetic properties of 1-6 were investigated, revealing that only ligand HL1 induces assemblies (1-4) capable of showing SMM behaviour, with Dy(III) congeners (1, 2) able to exhibit the phenomenon also under zero field conditions. Theoretical ab initio studies helped in determination of Dy(III) energetic levels, magnetic anisotropic axes and corroborated magnetic relaxation mechanisms to be a combination of Raman and quantum tunnelling in zero dc field, the latter being cancelled in the optimum non-zero dc field. Our work represents the first study of magneto-structural correlations within the trityl Ln-SMMs, leading to generation of slowly relaxing zero-field dysprosium complexes within the hydrogen-bonded assemblies.

Structural and Magnetic Analysis of a Family of Structurally Related Iron(III)-Oxo Clusters of Metal Nuclearity Fe8, Fe12Ca4, and Fe12La4

The synthesis, crystal structure, and magnetic characterization are reported for three new structurally related iron(III) compounds (NHEt3)[Fe8O5(OH)5(O2PPh2)10] (1), [Fe12 Ca4O10(O2CPh)10(hmp)4] (2), and [Fe12La4O10(OH)4(tbb)24] (3), where hmpH is 2-(hydroxymethyl)pyridine and tbbH is 4-tBu-benzoic acid. 1 was obtained from the reaction of Fe(NO3)3·9H2O, diphenylphosphinic acid (Ph2PO2H), and NEt3 in a 1:4:16 molar ratio in MeCN at 50 °C; 2 was obtained from the reaction of [Fe3O(O2CPh)6(H2O)3](NO3), Ca(NO3)2, and NEt3 in a 1:1:4:2 ratio at 130 °C; and 3 was obtained from the reaction of Fe(NO3)3·9H2O, La(NO3)3·6H2O, 4-tBu-benzoic acid, and NEt3 in a 1:1:4:4 ratio in PhCN at 140 °C. The core of 1 consists of two {Fe4(µ3-O)2}8+ butterfly units stacked on top of each other and bridged by O2− and HO− ions. The cores of 2 and 3 also contain two stacked butterfly units, plus four additional Fe atoms, two at each end, and four M atoms (M = Ca2+ (2); La3+ (3)) on the sides. Variable-temperature (T) and solid-state dc and ac magnetization (M) data collected in the 1.8–300 K range revealed that 1 has an S = 0 ground state, 2 has a χMT value at low T consistent with the central Fe8 in a local S = 0 ground state and the two Fe3+ ions in each end-pair to be non-interacting, whereas 3 has a χMT value at low T consistent with these end-pairs each being ferromagnetically coupled with S = 5 ground states, plus intermolecular ferromagnetic interactions. These conclusions were reached from complementing the experimental studies with the calculation of the various Fe2 pairwise Jij exchange couplings by DFT computations and by using a magnetostructural correlation (MSC) for polynuclear Fe3+/O complexes, as well as a structural analysis of the intermolecular contacts in the crystal packing of 3.

Probing the Influence of Structural Distortion and Axial Ligands on Magnetic Anisotropy in a Series of Chiral Pentagonal Bipyramidal Co(II) and Ni(II) Complexes

A series of magnetically anisotropic chiral pentagonal bipyramidal (PBP) Co(II) and Ni(II) complexes are prepared by employing chiral bis-hydrazone ligands, viz., 2,6-diacetylpyridinebis(R/S-lactic acid hydrazide) (R,R/S,S-daplh) and (R)/(S)-2, 6-diacetylpyridinebis(3-hydroxyisobutyric acid hydrazide) (R,R/S,S-daphibh). Investigations of magnetic anisotropy by wave function based ab initio CASSCF calculations manifest the presence of substantial negative uniaxial magnetic anisotropy in the present PBP Ni(II) complexes, while the chiral PBP Co(II) complexes display large easy-plane magnetic anisotropy. Magnetostructural correlations show the profound influence of structural distortions and the ligand field environment on the axial zero field splitting parameter (D). Accordingly, a convenient strategy to enhance the D parameter in PBP Co(II) and Ni(II) complexes is devised.

Synthesis of copper(II) halide dimers with 2-amino-5-methylpyridine and serendipitous copper catalyzed synthesis of 3-bromo-2-ethyl-5-methyl-1H-pyrrolo[2,3-b]pyridine

Reaction of CuX2·nH2O (X = Cl, n = 2; X = Br, n = 0) with 2-amino-5-methylpyridine (5MAP) in acetonitrile yielded [(5MAP)2CuX2]2 (1, Cl; 2, Br). The compounds are isomorphous and crystallize in the monoclinic space group P21 /n as bihalide bridged dimers. Variable temperature magnetic measurements show very weak exchange in the two compounds (-2.1(1) K) which may correlate with previously proposed magnetostructural correlations for bihalide bridged Cu(II) dimers. In attempts to prepare 2 in 2-butanone as solvent, [(3-Br-2-Et-5-Mepyrpy)(CH3CO2)4Cu2] (3) was serendipitously isolated (3-Br-2-Et-5-Mepyrpy = 3-bromo-2-ethyl-5-methyl-7H-pyrrolido[2,3-b]pyridinium). The bicyclic ligand was synthesized in situ by condensation of 5MAP with the solvent; the acetate ions were generated by copper(II) catalyzed Baeyer-Villiger oxidation of the solvent. A mechanism for the synthesis is proposed. The resulting Cu-paddlewheel compound exhibits strong (-400 K) antiferromagnetic interactions.

A spherical capped square antiprismatic DyIII complex encapsulated three acylhydrazone Schiff base ligands behaving field-induced single-ion magnet behaviour

One mononuclear DyIII based complex, [Dy(L)3]·0·25H2O (1) (HL= N'-(2-hydroxybenzoyl)pyridine-2-carbohydrazonamide) has been successfully synthesized and systematically characterized. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction reveals that 1 crystallizes in the orthorhombic system with space group P/21. The nine-coordinated DyIII ion in 1 adopts distorted spherical capped square antiprism configuration (C4v-CSAPR) with three tridentate coordination pockets. In addition, the alternating-current (ac) magnetic susceptibility investigations show that 1 exhibits slow magnetic relaxation behavior under an applied 1000 Oe field with effective energy barrier (Ueff) of 83.10 K. To understand the magnetic behaviour in depth, the magnetic axes and magneto-structural correlations are analyzed to reveal that the coordination of three ligands effectively enhances the axiality of the nine-coordinated mononuclear DyIII complexes, thereby exhibiting the slow magnetic relaxation behaviour. This work provides a strategy to effectively improve the performance of single-ion magnets (SIMs) by introducing more ligands around the DyIII ion, and regularizing the coordination configuration of the DyIII ion towards an axial-type structure.

New Dinuclear Macrocyclic Copper(II) Complexes as Potentially Fluorescent and Magnetic Materials.

Two dinuclear copper(II) complexes with macrocyclic Schiff bases K1 and K2 were prepared by the template reaction of (R)-(+)-1,1'-binaphthalene-2,2'-diamine and 2-hydroxy-5-methyl-1,3-benzenedicarboxaldehyde K1, or 4-tert-butyl-2,6-diformylphenol K2 with copper(II) chloride dihydrate. The compounds were characterized by spectroscopic methods. X-ray crystal structure determination and DFT calculations confirmed their geometry in solution and in the solid phase. Moreover, intermolecular interactions in the crystal structure of K2 were analyzed using 3D Hirshfeld surfaces and the related 2D fingerprint plots. The magnetic study revealed very strong antiferromagnetic CuII-CuII exchange interactions, which were supported by magneto-structural correlation and DFT calculations conducted within a broken symmetry (BS) framework. Complexes K1 and K2 exhibited luminescent properties that may be of great importance in the search for new OLEDs. Both K1 and K2 complexes showed emissions in the range of 392-424 nm in solutions at various polarities. Thin materials of the studied compounds were deposited on Si(111) by the spin-coating method or by thermal vapor deposition and studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM/EDS), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and fluorescence spectroscopy. The thermally deposited K1 and K2 materials showed high fluorescence intensity in the range of 318-531 nm for K1/Si and 326-472 nm for the K2/Si material, indicating that they could be used in optical devices.

Theoretical identification of key structural factors for strong magnetic anisotropy in Ni(II) complexes

Single-molecule magnets (SMMs) possess a crucial property called magnetic anisotropy (MA), which has an exceedingly delicate correlation with their structures. In recent years, the study on magneto-structural correlations has emerged as a challenging area in singlemolecule science. Understanding the fundamental physical mechanisms underlying the magneto-structural correlations is essential for building excellent high-temperature SMMs. In this work, we screened various four-coordinated nickel(II) SMMs and studied several key structural factors, such as the lengths and angles of the coordination bonds that may be closely associated with MA. Following that, we developed simple molecular models to deduce the evolution trends of MA with coordination bond angles and lengths. The findings on the magneto-structural correlations stimulated our interest to further explore the crystal structure database. We revealed that the magneto-structural correlation can be well described by a logarithmic function. Guided by such a relationship, we discovered a nickel(II) complex with the strongest MA to date among the tetrahedral-coordinated ones. Our work may be helpful for the empirical synthesis of exceptional high-temperature SMMs.

Magneto-structural maps and bridged-ligand effect for dichloro-bridged dinuclear copper(ii) complexes: a theoretical perspective.

Theoretical understanding of magneto-structural correlations in dichloro-bridged dicopper(ii) complexes can guide the design of magnetic materials having broad-scale applications. However, previous reports suggest these correlations are complicated and unclear. To clarify possible correlations, magnetic coupling constants (J calc) of variants of a representative {Cu-(μ-Cl)2-Cu} complex A were calculated through BS-DFT. The variation of the Cu-(μ-Cl)-Cu angle (α), Cu⋯Cu distance (R 0), and Cu-Cl-Cu-Cl dihedral angle (τ) followed by structural optimization and calculation of the magnetic coupling constant (J calc) revealed several trends. J calc increased linearly with R 0 and τ, and initially increased and then decreased with α. Further, bridging ligand effects on J calc for dicopper(ii) complexes were evaluated through BS-DFT; the results revealed that J calc increased with increasing ligand field strength (I- < Br- < Cl- < N3 - < F-). Furthermore, a linear relationship was found between the spin density of the bridging ligand and J calc.

Experimental and theoretical magnetostructural studies on discrete heterometallic cyanide-bridged dinuclear FeIIIMnII and tetranuclear FeIII2CuII2 complexes bearing tripodal pyrazolyl borate and tetradentate phenolate-based ligands.

Two new complexes [FeIII(Tp)(CN)2(μ-CN)MnIICl(HL1)]·3DMF (1) and {[FeIII(Tp)(CN)(μ2-NC)2CuII(HL2)](ClO4)}2·6DMF (2) (HL1 = 2-((((1-methylbenzimidazol-2-yl)methyl)(pyridin-2-ylmethyl)amino)methyl)phenol and HL2 = 2-(((pyridin-2-ylmethyl)(quinolin-2-ylmethyl)-amino)methyl)phenol) have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis and IR and UV/vis spectroscopy. Structural analysis revealed that 1 is a discrete dinuclear coordination complex and 2 is a discrete tetranuclear coordination complex. In complex 1, each MnII is in a distorted octahedral MN4OCl environment where coordination is satisfied by three nitrogen atoms and one oxygen atom of the ligand, and a chloride group and one nitrogen atom from cyanide. In complex 2, each Cu is in a distorted octahedral MN5O environment where coordination is satisfied by three nitrogen atoms and one oxygen atom of the ligand, and two nitrogen atoms from two cyanides. Direct current (dc) variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements on polycrystalline samples of 1 and 2 were carried out in the temperature range of 1.8-300 K. Investigation of the magnetic properties reveals the occurrence of weak antiferromagnetic coupling between the low-spin FeIII (S = 1/2) ions and high-spin MnII (S = 5/2) ions in 1, while 2 exhibits ferro- and antiferromagnetic coupling between the metal ions in the tetranuclear CuII2FeIII2 unit. DFT calculations show ferromagnetic coupling in both complexes, although this appears to be weak in the case of complex 1. In addition, magnetostructural correlations reveal the magnetic behavior against Mn-N-C and Fe-C-N angles in 1 and Cu-N-C and Fe-C-N angles in 2.

Magneto-structural studies on a number of doubly end-on cyanate and azide bridged dinuclear nickel(ii) complexes with {N3O} donor Schiff base ligands.

Two new doubly μ 1,1-N3 bridged (1 and 3) and six new doubly μ 1,1-NCO bridged NiII complexes (2, 4-8) with six different N3O donor Schiff base ligands have been synthesized and magneto-structurally characterized. All these neutral complex molecules are isostructural and constitute edge sharing bioctahedral structures. Magnetic studies revealed that all these complexes exhibit ferromagnetic interaction through bridging pseudohalides with ferromagnetic coupling constant J being significantly higher for azide-bridged complexes than that of the cyanate analogues. This is consistent with the literature reported data and also the presence of polarizable π systems and two different N and O donor atoms in cyanate ion, rendering it a poor magnetic coupler in comparison to azide analogues. Although, the magneto-structurally characterized doubly μ 1,1-N3 bridged NiII complexes are abundant, only few such complexes with μ 1,1-bridging NCO- ions are reported in the literature. Remarkably, addition of these six new examples in this ever-growing series of doubly μ 1,1-NCO bridged systems gives us an opportunity to analyse the precise magneto-structural correlation in this system, showing a general trend in which the J value increases with an increase in bridging angles. Therefore, the high degree of structural and magnetic resemblances by inclusion of six new examples in this series is the major achievement of the present work. An elaborate DFT study was performed resulting in magneto-structural correlation showing that nature and value of the J-parameter is defined not only by Ni-Nb-Ni bond angles, but an important role is also played by the Ni1-Ni2-Nb-Xt dihedral angle (Nb and Xt are bridging N and terminal N or O atom of bridging ligands, respectively).

Air-stable four-coordinate cobalt(ii) single-ion magnets: experimental and ab initio ligand field analyses of correlations between dihedral angles and magnetic anisotropy.

For single-ion magnets (SIMs), understanding the effects of the local coordination environment and ligand field on magnetic anisotropy is key to controlling their magnetic properties. Here we present a series of tetracoordinate cobalt(ii) complexes of the general formula [FL2Co]X2 (where FL is a bidentate diamido ligand) whose electron-withdrawing -C6F5 substituents confer stability under ambient conditions. Depending on the cations X, these complexes adopt structures with greatly varying dihedral twist angle δ between the N-Co-N' chelate planes in the solid state (48.0 to 89.2°). AC and DC field magnetic susceptibility measurements show this to translate into very different magnetic properties, the axial zero-field splitting (ZFS) parameter D ranging from -69 cm-1 to -143 cm-1 with substantial or negligible rhombic component E, respectively. A close to orthogonal arrangement of the two N,N'-chelating σ- and π-donor ligands at the Co(ii) ion is found to raise the energy barrier for magnetic relaxation to above 400 K. Multireference ab initio methods were employed to describe the complexes' electronic structures, and the results were analyzed within the framework of ab initio ligand field theory to probe the nature of the metal-ligand bonding and spin-orbit coupling. A relationship between the energy gaps of the first few electronic transitions and the ZFS was established, and the ZFS was correlated with the dihedral angle δ as well as with the metal-ligand bonding variations, viz. the two angular overlap parameters eσ and eπs. These findings not only give rise to a Co(ii) SIM showing open hysteresis up to 3.5 K at a sweep rate of 30 Oe s-1, but they also provide design guidelines for Co(ii) complexes with favorable SIM signatures or even switchable magnetic relaxation properties.

Probing the Magnetization Relaxation Dynamics of Four-Coordinate Lanthanide(III) Complexes

The reaction of bulky trimethylsilylanilide (N-TMSA) ligand with various lanthanide salts led us to isolate unusual and unique four-coordinate monomeric Ln(III) complexes which are challenging to isolate and not surprisingly rare in the literature. The single crystal X-ray diffraction unveils that all the complexes are monomeric and isostructural with the general molecular formula of [Ln(N-TMSA)3(THF)] where Ln = Dy (1) or Yb (2). Both complexes are found to possess distorted tetrahedral geometry. For all the complexes, detailed dc and ac susceptibility measurements were performed and both 1 and 2 show frequency-dependent out-of-phase susceptibility signals only in the presence of an optimum external magnetic field. The experimental observations are well supported by theoretical calculations and developed magneto-structural correlation using the various model complexes.
