Enhancing Power Conversion Efficiency of Organic Solar Cells with Magnetoplasmonic Fe3O4@Au@m-ABS Nanoparticles.

Organic-inorganic nanocomposites have the potential to be used in photovoltaic materials due to their eco-friendliness, suitable band gaps, and high stability. In this work, we integrated gold and Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles with poly-m-amino benzene sulfonic (m-ABS) to synthesize Fe3O4@Au@poly-(m-aminobenzenesulfonic acid) (Fe3O4@Au@m-ABS) magneto-plasmonic nanoparticles (MPNPs) to enhance the performance of the organic photovoltaic (OPV). These MPNPs exhibit broad UV-Vis absorption and a low band gap of 2.878 eV, enhancing their suitability for photovoltaic applications. The MPNPs were introduced into the ZnO electron transporting layer (ETL) and active layer to investigate the influence of MPNPs on the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of the OPVs. When 0.1 vol% MPNPs were incorporated in the ETL, the OPVs achieved a PCE of 14.24% and a fill factor (FF) of 69.10%. On the other hand, when 0.1 vol% MPNPs were incorporated in the active layer, the OPVs showed a PCE of 14.11% and an FF of 68.83%. However, the OPVs without MPNPs only possessed a PCE of 13.15% and an FF of 63.69%. The incorporation of MPNPs increased the PCE by 8.3% in the OPV device. These findings suggest that Fe3O4@Au@m-ABS MPNPs are promising nanocomposite materials for enhancing the performance of OPVs.

Flame spray pyrolyzed carbon-encapsulated Au/Fe3O4 nanoaggregates enabled efficient photothermal therapy and magnetic hyperthermia of esophageal cancer cells.

Multifunctional magneto-plasmonic nanoparticles with magnetic hyperthermia and photothermal therapy could kill cancer cells efficiently. Herein, carbon-encapsulated Au/Fe3O4 (Au/Fe3O4@C) was fabricated using an enclosed flame spray pyrolysis. The nanostructures, including an Fe3O4 core (51.9-55.2nm) with a decreasing carbon shell thickness and an Au core (4.68-8.75nm) coated with 2-4 graphite layers, were tailored by tuning the C2H4 content in the reacting gas mixture. Saturation magnetization (33.7-48.2emu/g) and optical absorption were determined. The carbon shell facilitated the dispersion of Au/Fe3O4 and restrained their laser-induced and magnetic field-induced coalescence and growth. Au/Fe3O4@C exhibited excellent magnetic resonance imaging capability (91.4mM-1 s-1) and photothermal performance (65.4°C for 0.8mg/mL Au/Fe3O4@C at a power density of 1.0W/cm2 after 300s near-IR laser irradiation (808nm)). Moreover, the combined application of photothermal and magnetic-heating properties reduced the required intensity of both laser and magnetic field compared to the intensity of separate situations. Our work provides a unique, intriguing approach to preparing multicomponent core/shell nanoaggregates that are promising candidates for esophageal cancer cell therapy.

Improving Sensitivity and Reproducibility of Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering Biochips Utilizing Magnetoplasmonic Nanoparticles and Statistical Methods.

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) technology has been widely recognized for its remarkable sensitivity in biochip development. This study presents a novel sandwich immunoassay that synergizes SERS with magnetoplasmonic nanoparticles (MPNs) to improve sensitivity. By taking advantage of the unique magnetism of these nanoparticles, we further enhance the detection sensitivity of SERS biochips through the applied magnetic field. Despite the high sensitivity, practical applications of SERS biochips are often limited by the issues of stability and reproducibility. In this study, we introduced a straightforward statistical method known as "Gaussian binning", which involves initially binning the two-dimensional Raman mapping data and subsequently applying Gaussian fitting. This approach enables a more consistent and reliable interpretation of data by reducing the variability inherent in Raman signal measurements. Based on our method, the biochip, targeting for C-reactive protein (CRP), achieves an impressive detection limit of 5.96 fg/mL, and with the application of a 3700 G magnetic field, it further enhances the detection limit by 5.7 times, reaching 1.05 fg/mL. Furthermore, this highly sensitive and magnetically tunable SERS biochip is easily designed for versatile adaptability, enabling the detection of other proteins. We believe that this innovation holds promise in enhancing the clinical applicability of SERS biochips.

Integrated magneto-plasmonic nanostructures-based immunoassay for galectin-3 detection.

Cardiovascular diseases remain a leading cause of global mortality, highlighting the need for accurate diagnostic tools and the detection of specific cardiac biomarkers. Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectroscopy has proved to be a promising alternative diagnostic tool to detect relevant biomarkers compared to traditional methods. To our knowledge, SERS methodology has never been used to detect galectin-3 (Gal-3), a crucial biomarker for cardiovascular conditions. Our study aimed to develop plasmonic and magneto-plasmonic nanoplatforms for the sensitive immunodetection of Gal-3 using SERS. Spherical gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) were synthesized and functionalized with 11-mercaptoundecanoic acid (MUDA) to enable antibody binding and 4-mercaptobenzoic acid (4MBA) that served as a Raman reporter due to its intense Raman signal. Following bioconjugation with Gal-3 antibody, the AuNPs were employed in the immunodetection of Gal-3 in phosphate-buffer saline (PBS) solution, offering a limit of detection (LOD) of 12.2 ng mL-1 and a working range up to 120 ng mL-1. Furthermore, our SERS-based immunosystem demonstrated selectivity for Gal-3 (40 ng mL-1) in the presence of other biomolecules such as α-amylase, bovine serum albumin and human C-reactive protein. As a proof of concept, we developed magneto-plasmonic nanoparticles composed of silica-coated magnetite decorated with the bioconjugated AuNPs aimed at enhancing the uptake and detection of Gal-3 via SERS coupled with Raman imaging. Our findings underscore the potential of SERS-based techniques for the sensitive and specific detection of biomarkers, holding significant implications for improved diagnosis and surveillance of cardiovascular diseases. Future research will focus on further optimizing these nanoplatforms and their translation into clinical settings.

Multiwavelength SERS of Magneto-Plasmonic Nanoparticles Obtained by Combined Laser Ablation and Solvothermal Methods.

The present study introduces a novel method for the synthesis of magneto-plasmonic nanoparticles (MPNPs) with enhanced functionality for surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) applications. By employing pulsed laser ablation in liquid (PLAL) to synthesize plasmonic nanoparticles and wet chemistry to synthesize magnetic nanoparticles, we successfully fabricated chemically pure hybrid Fe3O4@Au and Fe3O4@Ag nanoparticles. We demonstrated a straightforward approach of an electrostatic attachment of the plasmonic and magnetic parts using positively charged polyethylenimine. The MPNPs displayed high SERS sensitivity and reproducibility, and the magnetic part allowed for the controlled separation of the nanoparticles from the reaction mixture, their subsequent concentration, and their precise deposition onto a specified surface area. Additionally, we fabricated alloy based MPNPs from AgxAu100-x (x = 50 and 80 wt %) targets with distinct localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) wavelengths. The compositions, morphologies, and optical properties of the nanoparticles were characterized by using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV-vis spectroscopy, and multiwavelength Raman spectroscopy. A standard SERS marker, 4-mercaptobenzoic acid (4-MBA), validated the enhancement properties of the MPNPs and found an enhancement factor of 2 × 108 for the Fe3O4@Ag nanoparticles at 633 nm excitation. Lastly, we applied MPNP-enhanced Raman spectroscopy for the analysis of the biologically relevant molecule adenine and found a limit of detection of 10-7 M at 785 nm excitation. The integration of PLAL and wet chemical methods enabled the relatively fast and cost-effective production of MPNPs characterized by high SERS sensitivity and signal reproducibility that are required in various fields, including biomedicine, food safety, materials science, security, and defense.

Highly specific and sensitive detection of bacteria by dark-field light-scattering imaging based on bacteriophage-modified magnetoplasmonic nanoparticles

Abstract Bacterial infections pose significant global health concerns, necessitating precise and sensitive detection methods. This study introduces a multifunctional probe for bacterial detection. Bifunctional magnetoplasmonic nanoparticles (NPs) serve a dual purpose as carriers for magnetic separation (MS) and enhancers for light scattering of the target bacteria. We achieved exceptional selectivity at the bacterial species level by bioconjugating them with bacteriophages (phages). Optimal phage coverage was carefully determined to enhance the capture efficiency of the target bacterial cells. Additionally, we identified the ideal mixing ratios of the phage probe to bacteria, ensuring efficient MS and high light-scattering intensity. The use of the phage probe enabled the successful separation of captured target bacteria from other bacterial strains in the sample mixture. Bacterial detection was accomplished through dark-field light-scattering imaging, eliminating the need for additional labeling with other probes. This method showed a remarkable sensitivity, achieving a detection limit of ∼102 colony-forming units ml−1. This value is 2 orders of magnitude lower than that achieved using our previously reported technique using monofunctional plasmonic NPs. These phage probes hold promise for healthcare, biotech, and environmental monitoring owing to their adaptability to diverse bacterial species.

Magneto-Plasmonic Nanoparticles Generated by Laser Ablation of Layered Fe/Au and Fe/Au/Fe Composite Films for SERS Application

Magneto-plasmonic nanoparticles were fabricated using a 1064 nm picosecond-pulsed laser for ablation of Fe/Au and Fe/Au/Fe composite thin films in acetone. Nanoparticles were characterized by electron microscopy, ultraviolet-visible (UV-VIS) absorption, and Raman spectroscopy. Hybrid nanoparticles were arranged on an aluminum substrate by a magnetic field for application in surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). Transmission electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy analysis revealed the spherical core-shell (Au-Fe) structure of nanoparticles. Raman spectroscopy of bare magneto-plasmonic nanoparticles confirmed the presence of magnetite (Fe3O4) without any impurities from maghemite or hematite. In addition, resonantly enhanced carbon-based bands were detected in Raman spectra. Plasmonic properties of hybrid nanoparticles were probed by SERS using the adsorbed biomolecule adenine. Based on analysis of experimental spectra and density functional theory modeling, the difference in SERS spectra of adsorbed adenine on laser-ablated Au and magneto-plasmonic nanoparticles was explained by the binding of adenine to the Fe3O4 structure at hybrid nanoparticles. The hybrid nanoparticles are free from organic stabilizers, and because of the biocompatibility of the magnetic shell and SERS activity of the plasmonic gold core, they can be widely applied in the construction of biosensors and biomedicine applications.

Metal plasmon-enhanced lanthanide fluorescent nanoparticles for monitoring aqueous copper ions

Lanthanide-doped nanomaterials displaying intense, explicit, and long-lasting photoluminescence (PL) have gained much attention in sensing and imaging applications. In this work, europium complex Eu(dibenzoylmethane)3(1,10-phenanthroline) was integrated into core-shell magnetoplasmonic nanoparticles (Ag@Fe3O4 MagPlas NPs), forming a photoluminescent MagPlas nanostructure with uniform morphology, sharp PL emission profile, and distinct magnetic response. The Eu-doped MagPlas NPs (Eu-MagPs) with Ag-core exhibited an enhancement of PL intensity and lifetime compared to the non-plasmonic counterpart, owing to the metal plasmon-induced fluorescence enhancement. Moreover, the quenching phenomenon of the Eu-MagP probe was utilized as a platform for active quantification of metal ion concentration, exclusively Cu2+, in aqueous samples. The luminescence intensity from the Eu-doped MagPlas NP was proportionally quenched by Cu2+ in the working range of 0–2 ppm with negligible influences of other common cations and anions. Static quenching was investigated as the main mechanism for selective detection, in which the presence of quenchers did not affect the luminescent lifetime of the hybrid nanostructure. Moreover, Eu-MagPs were integrated into polyacrylamide hydrogels with enhanced customizability toward the varied amounts of Cu2+. This fluorescent MagPlas structure, therefore, can be utilized as versatile, waste-free, fully recoverable testing assays or chemical sensors for on-site environmental analysis, and water quality control.

Physico-chemical and MR relaxometry study of bovine serum albumin-coated magneto-plasmonic nanoparticles designed for potential use in cancer nanotheranostics

PurposeIn recent years, the use of nanoparticles has been developed to improve MRI contrast. To improve the contrast agents in image-guided therapy by Multifunctional nanoparticles, in this study, we synthesized a theranostic magneto-plasmonic nanocomplex based on magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles and bovine serum albumin-modified gold nanorod (Au@BSA-Fe3O4@CMD). The purpose of synthesizing these nanoparticles was to use them as MRI contrast agent and photothermal agents in in vitro and in vivo experiments. Materials and methodsInitially, the properties of the synthesized nanoparticles were investigated by methods such as DLS, TEM, FTIR. MTT assay was used to evaluate the toxicity of nanoparticles. Finally, to evaluate the contrast ability of nanoparticles, MRI images were taken in in vitro and in vivo conditions and then the images were analyzed. ResultsMTT test results on CT26 cell line showed no significant cytotoxicity for Au@BSA-Fe3O4@CMD nanoparticles at concentrations up to 20 ppm. The in vitro results demonstrated that the Au@BSA-Fe3O4@CMD nanocomplex has high T2 relaxation rate and great relaxivities (r2 = 140.14 mM−1 s−1, r1 = 2.066 mM−1 s−1, r2/r1 = 67.83). For in vivo conditions, a decrease in T2 signal of 9.64 and 11.01, respectively, was observed for intratumoral and intraperitoneal injection of nanoparticles. ConclusionThese in vitro and in vivo studies show that Au @ BSA-Fe3O4@CMD nanoparticles can significantly reduce the signal intensity of T2-weight MRI images, and therefore can offer significant potential as a theranostic platform for effective tumor MR imaging.

Ni–Au magnetoplasmonic nanoparticles with a unique intertwined crystal structure showing excellent reduction and tunability of the superparamagnetic blocking temperature

Magnetoplasmonic bimetallic nanoparticles (NPs) are inevitable components of several research domains that have widespread applications. However, bimetallic NPs that possess simultaneous magnetic and optical properties are often tremendously hard to synthesize. We report an extremely straight-forward, facile, quick, cost effective and easily scalable chemical method for the synthesis of magnetoplasmonic bimetallic nickel–gold (Ni–Au) NPs possessing a unique intertwined crystal structure, exhibiting excellent magnetic and plasmonic properties. The chemical method employs minimal number of precursors and eludes the necessity of inert gas atmospheres, high temperature refluxing procedures and templates. Through extensive crystal structure, compositional and surface characterizations by combining XRD, HR-TEM, EDX, SAED and XPS techniques, the bimetallic NPs were seen to possess an interesting structure where the atomic planes of Ni and Au were intertwined within the whole of each NP, unlike conventional core–shells or alloys. Specifically, an exhaustive HR-TEM analysis methodology applied to each visible Ni–Au NP proved vital in disclosing the intertwined nature of the Ni and Au atomic planes. The Ni–Au NPs exhibited magnetization properties that were drastically different from those of the pure metallic Ni NPs. While Ni NPs showed superparamagnetism (SPM) at temperatures much higher than room temperature, Ni–Au NPs showed an SPM blocking temperature, TB, as low as 47 K. SPM in the bimetallic system also exhibited appreciable tunability, that was demonstrated by further decreasing the TB value in the Ni–Au NPs that were synthesized using smaller sized Ni NP seeds. In addition to showing the much desired SPM behaviour at room temperature, the broad plasmonic resonance in the visible wavelength region due to the presence of Au makes the Ni–Au NPs multifunctional and thus promising for various applications. The developed synthesis method highlights the possibilities towards synthesizing magnetoplasmonic bimetallic systems with unique property-specific architectures through much less expensive, unconstrained chemical synthesis pathways.

Enhanced Tumor Accumulation of Multimodal Magneto-Plasmonic Nanoparticles via an Implanted Micromagnet-Assisted Delivery Strategy.

One of the major shortcomings of nano carriers-assisted cancer therapeutic strategies continues to be the inadequate tumor penetration and retention of systemically administered nanoformulations and its off-target toxicity. Stromal parameters-related heterogeneity in enhanced permeability and retention effect and physicochemical properties of the nanoformulations immensely contributes to their poor tumor extravasation. Herein, a novel tumor targeting strategy, where an intratumorally implanted micromagnet can significantly enhance accumulation of magneto-plasmonic nanoparticles (NPs) at the micromagnet-implanted tumor in bilateral colorectal tumor models while limiting their off-target accumulation, is demonstrated. To this end, novel multimodal gold/iron oxide NPs comprised of an array of multifunctional moieties with high therapeutic, sensing, and imaging potential are developed. It is also discovered that cancer cell targeted NPs in combination with static magnetic field can selectively induce cancer cell death. A multimodal caspase-3 nanosensor is also developed for real-time visualization of selective induction of apoptosis in cancer cells. In addition, the photothermal killing capability of these NPs in vitro is evaluated, and their potential for enhanced photothermal ablation in tissue samples is demonstrated. Building on current uses of implantable devices for therapeutic purposes, this study envisions the proposed micromagnet-assisted NPs delivery approach may be used to accelerate the clinical translation of various nanoformulations.

Sensitivity enhancement of magneto-optical Faraday effect immunoassay method based on biofunctionalized γ-Fe2O3@Au core-shell magneto-plasmonic nanoparticles for the blood detection of Alzheimer's disease

In this work, we conducted a proof-of-concept experiment based on biofunctionalized magneto-plasmonic nanoparticles (MPNs) and magneto-optical Faraday effect for in vitro Alzheimer's disease (AD) assay. The biofunctionalized γ-Fe2O3@Au MPNs of which the surfaces are modified with the antibody of Tau protein (anti-τ). As anti-τ reacts with Tau protein, biofunctionalized MPNs aggregate to form magnetic clusters which will hence induce the change of the reagent's Faraday rotation angle. The result showed that the γ-Fe2O3@Au core-shell MPNs can enhance the Faraday rotation with respect to the raw γ-Fe2O3 nanoparticles. Because of their magneto-optical enhancement effect, biofunctionalized γ-Fe2O3@Au MPNs effectively improve the detection sensitivity. The detection limit of Tau protein as low as 9 pg/mL (9 ppt) was achieved. Furthermore, the measurements of the clinical samples from AD patients agreed with the CDR evaluated by the neurologist. The results suggest that our method has the potential for disease assay applications.

Thermally Stable Magneto-Plasmonic Nanoparticles for SERS with Tunable Plasmon Resonance.

Bifunctional magneto-plasmonic nanoparticles that exhibit synergistically magnetic and plasmonic properties are advanced substrates for surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) because of their excellent controllability and improved detection potentiality. In this study, composite magneto-plasmonic nanoparticles (Fe3O4@AgNPs) were formed by mixing colloid solutions of 50 nm-sized magnetite nanoparticles with 13 nm-sized silver nanoparticles. After drying of the layer of composite Fe3O4@AgNPs under a strong magnetic field, they outperformed the conventional silver nanoparticles during SERS measurements in terms of signal intensity, spot-to-spot, and sample-to-sample reproducibility. The SERS enhancement factor of Fe3O4@AgNP-adsorbed 4-mercaptobenzoic acid (4-MBA) was estimated to be 3.1 × 107 for a 633 nm excitation. In addition, we show that simply by changing the initial volumes of the colloid solutions, it is possible to control the average density of the silver nanoparticles, which are attached to a single magnetite nanoparticle. UV-Vis and SERS data revealed a possibility to tune the plasmonic resonance frequency of Fe3O4@AgNPs. In this research, the plasmon resonance maximum varied from 470 to 800 nm, suggesting the possibility to choose the most suitable nanoparticle composition for the particular SERS experiment design. We emphasize the increased thermal stability of composite nanoparticles under 532 and 442 nm laser light irradiation compared to that of bare Fe3O4 nanoparticles. The Fe3O4@AgNPs were further characterized by XRD, TEM, and magnetization measurements.

Progress, Opportunities, and Challenges of Magneto-Plasmonic Nanoparticles under Remote Magnetic and Light Stimulation for Brain-Tissue and Cellular Regeneration

Finding curable therapies for neurodegenerative disease (ND) is still a worldwide medical and clinical challenge. Recently, investigations have been made into the development of novel therapeutic techniques, and examples include the remote stimulation of nanocarriers to deliver neuroprotective drugs, genes, growth factors, and antibodies using a magnetic field and/or low-power lights. Among these potential nanocarriers, magneto-plasmonic nanoparticles possess obvious advantages, such as the functional restoration of ND models, due to their unique nanostructure and physiochemical properties. In this review, we provide an overview of the latest advances in magneto-plasmonic nanoparticles, and the associated therapeutic approaches to repair and restore brain tissues. We have reviewed their potential as smart nanocarriers, including their unique responsivity under remote magnetic and light stimulation for the controlled and sustained drug delivery for reversing neurodegenerations, as well as the utilization of brain organoids in studying the interaction between NPs and neuronal tissue. This review aims to provide a comprehensive summary of the current progress, opportunities, and challenges of using these smart nanocarriers for programmable therapeutics to treat ND, and predict the mechanism and future directions.

Electrochemical Investigation of Porosity in Core-Shell Magnetoplasmonic Nanoparticles.

Porous core-shell nanoparticles (NPs) have emerged as a promising material for broad ranges of applications in catalysts, material chemistry, biology, and optical sensors. Using a typical Ag core-Fe3O4 shell NP, a.k.a., magnetoplasmonic (MagPlas) NP, two porous shell models were prepared: i.e., Ag@Fe3O4 NPs and its SiO2-covered NPs (Ag@Fe3O4@SiO2). We suggested using cyclic voltammetry (CV) to provide unprecedented insight into the porosity of the core-shell NPs caused by the applied potential, resulting in the selective redox activities of the core and porous shell components of Ag@Fe3O4 NPs and Ag@Fe3O4@SiO2 NPs at different cycles of CV. The porous and nonporous core-shell nanostructures were qualitatively and quantitatively determined by the electrochemical method. The ratio of the oxidation current peak (μA) of Ag to Ag+ in the porous shell to that in the SiO2 coated (nonporous) shell was 400:3.2. The suggested approach and theoretical background could be extended to other types of multicomponent NP complexes.

Surface Plasmon Resonance Immunosensor with Antibody-Functionalized Magnetoplasmonic Nanoparticles for Ultrasensitive Quantification of the CD5 Biomarker

A surface plasmon resonance (SPR) immunosensor signal amplification strategy based on antibody-functionalized gold-coated magnetic nanoparticles (mAuNPs) was developed for ultrasensitive and quantitative detection of the CD5 biomarker using an indirect sandwich immunoassay format. The gold surface of the SPR sensor disk and mAuNPs was modified with a self-assembled monolayer of 11-mercaptoundecanoic acid (11-MUA), and the coupling method using N-(3-(dimethylamino)propyl)-N′-ethylcarbodiimide hydrochloride and N-hydroxysuccinimide was used to immobilize capture antibodies against human CD5 (anti-CD52A) and detection antibodies against human CD5 (anti-CD52B), respectively. The mAuNPs and anti-CD52B conjugates (mAuNPs–anti-CD52B) were separated by an external magnetic field and used to amplify the SPR signal after the formation of the anti-CD52A/CD5 immune complex on the SPR sensor disk. Compared to the direct CD5 detection with a limit of detection (LOD) of 1.04 nM and a limit of quantification (LOQ) of 3.47 nM, the proposed sandwich immunoassay utilizing mAuNPs–anti-CD52B significantly improved the LOD up to 8.31 fM and the LOQ up to 27.70 fM. In addition, it showed satisfactory performance in human blood serum (recovery of 1.04 pM CD5 was 109.62%). These results suggest that the proposed signal amplification strategy has superior properties and offers the potential to significantly increase the sensitivity of the analysis.

Rapid Assembly of Magnetoplasmonic Photonic Arrays for Brilliant, Noniridescent, and Stimuli-Responsive Structural Colors.

There are usually trade-offs between maximizing the color saturation and brightness and minimizing the angle-dependent effect in structural colors. Here, a magnetic field-induced assembly for the rapid formation of scalable, uniform amorphous photonic arrays (APAs) featuring unique structural colors is demonstrated. The magnetic field plays a fundamental role in photonic film formation, making this assembly technology versatile for developing structural color patterns on arbitrary substrates. The synergistic combination of surface plasmonic resonance of the Ag core and broadband light absorption of high refractive index (RI) Fe3 O4 shell in hybrid magnetoplasmonic nanoparticles (MagPlas NPs) enables breaking the trade-offs to produce brilliant, noniridescent structural colors with high tunability and responsiveness. These features enable the fabrication of various types of highly sensitive and reliable colorimetric sensors for naked-eye detection without sophisticated instruments. Furthermore, large-scale structural color patterns are effortlessly achieved, demonstrating the high potential of the present approach for full-spectrum displays, active coatings, and rewritable papers.

Superparamagnetic iron oxide-enclosed hollow gold nanostructure with tunable surface plasmon resonances to promote near-infrared photothermal conversion

In this study, to enhance deep tissue penetration by near-infrared (NIR) light, a novel superparamagnetic iron oxide-enclosed hollow gold nanoshell (SPIO-HGNS) structure with tunable size and surface plasmon resonance (SPR) in the NIR range was designed and synthesized through a two-step template-enabled galvanic replacement reaction. Here, Ag-coated SPIO (SPIO-Ag) was prepared as a template with tunable outer diameters by way of adjusting the Ag content. SPIO-HGNS with variable hollow gold inner diameters can then be synthesized based on the determined outer diameter of the SPIO-Ag template through a galvanic replacement reaction between HAuCl3 and Ag coating on the SPIO surface. With incrementing amounts of Ag, three SPIO-HGNS structures were synthesized with comparable shell thicknesses around 6.7 nm and an average inner diameter of 38.7, 39.4, and 40.7 nm, respectively, evidenced by TEM and ICP results. The structure of SPIO-HGNS was confirmed by identifying Au111 lattice and the elemental mapping of Fe and Au using energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The ultraviolet–visible-NIR absorption spectra showed red-shifted SPR peaks (820, 855, and 945 nm) with the increasing inner diameters of SPIO-HGNS, which was also supported by an absorption cross-section simulation. The photothermal results showed that the three SPIO-HGNS structures, when exposed to ~ 30 s of 400 mW laser irradiation, exhibited photothermal temperature rises of 5.9, 4.6, and 2.9 ℃, respectively. This study explored the tuning of SPR properties in NIR-responsive magneto-plasmonic nanoparticles through a facile preparation procedure, paving the way for potential applications in photothermal therapies.Graphical abstractThe NIR-responsive magneto-plasmonic SPIO-HGNS nanostructures were developed with tunable SPR properties and strong photothermal conversion capacities.

New Insights into the Magnetic Properties of CoFe2O4@SiO2@Au Magnetoplasmonic Nanoparticles

We report the successful synthesis and a complete magnetic characterization of CoFe2O4@SiO2@Au magnetoplasmonic nanoparticles. The CoFe2O4 magnetic nanoparticles were prepared using the hydrothermal method. A subsequent SiO2 shell followed by a plasmonic Au shell were deposited on the magnetic core creating magnetoplasmonic nanoparticles with a core–shell architecture. A spin-glass-type magnetism was shown at the surface of the CoFe2O4 nanograins. Depending on the external magnetic field, two types of spin-glass were identified and analyzed in correlation with the exchange field acting on octahedral and tetrahedral iron sites. The magnetization per formula unit of the CoFe2O4 core is not changed in the case of CoFe2O4@SiO2@Au nanocomposites. The gold nanoparticles creating the plasmonic shell show a giant diamagnetic susceptibility, dependent on their crystallite sizes.
