Understanding of the diversity and petrogenesis of achondrites is critical for deciphering magmatic processes and the early evolution of planets and asteroids. Here, we report the detailed petrologic, mineralogical, geochemical, and chronological features of the unbrecciated Vestan meteorite Northwest Africa (NWA) 8326. We found that NWA 8326 is composed of coarse-grained orthopyroxene (∼74 vol%), plagioclase (∼19 vol%), fine-grained augite (∼5 vol%), and many accessory minerals such as chromite, ilmenite, Fe-sulfide, silica phases, K-feldspar, Ca-phosphate phases, zircon, baddeleyite, rutile, and primary Si,Al,K-rich glass, differing from typical howardite-eucrite-diogenite meteorites. Based on textural feature and compositional calculation of pyroxene, we suggest that the coarse-grained orthopyroxene was inverted from primary pigeonite and NWA 8326 should be classified as a pigeonite cumulate eucrite. The oxygen and chromium isotope data (Δ17O = − 0.254 ± 0.009 ‰; ε54Cr = − 0.60 ± 0.06) support this classification. A few zircon aggregates are observed in NWA 8326 and the grains therein show a core-mantle zoned texture in cathodoluminescence (CL) images, with the cores being dark and Al-rich while the mantles being bright and Al-poor. We interpret that the CL-dark cores are xenocrystic zircon grains derived from eucrites, whose presence indicates that NWA 8326 should have formed through partial melting of the Vestan mantle, with assimilation of eucritic material. The presence of xenocrystic zircon and primary Si,Al,K-rich glass and the large compositional variation of plagioclase indicate that NWA 8326 is an unequilibrated cumulate eucrite and hence the zircon 207Pb/206Pb age of 4559.2 ± 5.2 (2σ) Ma represents the crystallization of NWA 8326. Reconciling the cumulative texture with the presence of the chemically evolved glass, NWA 8326 would be excavated during the late stage of its crystallization and escaped the prevalent crustal thermal metamorphism of the eucrite parent body. The Mg isotopic composition of NWA 8326 is higher than most diogenites, which suggests that the parent magma of such a pigeonite cumulate eucrite was derived from a source region with heavier magnesium isotopic composition (μ25Mg: −90 to − 96 ppm).

Geochemical behavior of riverine magnesium isotopes in the Yarlung Tsangpo River Basin, southern Tibetan Plateau

The riverine magnesium (Mg) isotope composition is generally controlled by sources and fractionation processes. However, it remains unclear in which cases these factors are predominant at the basin scale. In this study, we investigated the major elements, trace elements, and Mg and strontium (Sr) isotope ratios in the Yarlung Tsangpo River (YTR) Basin, southern Tibetan Plateau (TP), to explore the geochemical behavior of Mg isotopes and the dominant controlling factors. Riverine Mg2+ was shown to derive primarily from the weathering of silicates and carbonates. Riverine δ26Mg, which is first influenced by the mixing of different lithological sources, was detected ranging from −1.63 ‰ to −0.52 ‰. According to the saturation indexes of common Mg-bearing secondary minerals, the basin was divided into two zones. Above Shannan City (Zone I), where river waters mostly were oversaturated with minerals, positive correlations were observed between δ26Mg and the Ca/Mg and Sr/Mg ratios. This indicated that, after mixing, secondary minerals (talc and chlorite), which tend to preferentially incorporate 24Mg, may be formed in most of waters, leading to an increase in riverine δ26Mg values. The Rayleigh and batch fractionation models were fitted with factors ranging from 0.9975 to 0.9997. Below Shannan City (Zone II), where river waters mostly were unsaturated with minerals, riverine δ26Mg was positively correlated with 87Sr/86Sr and negatively correlated with the Ca/Mg, Sr/Mg, and HCO3/Na ratios. This suggested that the riverine δ26Mg were influenced by carbonate dissolution with faster kinetic rates. Our analysis of riverine δ26Mg values in the YTR Basin may be a reference for interpreting the relationships between δ26Mg and δ7Li in river systems worldwide. In minerals-oversaturated waters, secondary mineral formation was shown to lead to isotope fractionation, resulting in a positive correlation between the two parameters, whereas in minerals-unsaturated waters, the δ26Mg and δ7Li values were negatively correlated, possibly due to the predominance of mineral dissolution.

Seasonal variations in lithium and magnesium isotopic composition of the Nujiang River water at the Daojieba Hydrological Station: Implications for chemical weathering

The response of chemical weathering to climate could be examined in a way by investigating seasonal changes in river geochemistry. Here, we determined the major elements, δ13C of DIC, 87Sr/86Sr, δ7Li, and δ26Mg of monthly time-series water samples at the Daojieba Hydrological Station in lower reach of the Nujiang River over a hydrological year. During high-flow seasons, the dissolved 87Sr/86Sr, δ7Li, and δ26Mg exhibit comparatively high values. 87Sr/86Sr ratio, together with δ13C of DIC, Si/Ca ratio, and pH value of river water, indicate an enhanced silicate weathering contribution to river dissolved load, and river δ7Li is impacted by secondary mineral formation-related fractionation during these periods. Similar to the 87Sr/86Sr ratio, δ26Mg of river water is indicative of a dominant source control. The positive relationship between Mg/Na ratio and δ26Mg value suggests that the prior weathering of Mg-rich silicate minerals could be important for elevated δ26Mg and Mg/Na molar ratio during high-flow seasons, while the Mg isotope fractionation signal can be seen when runoff increases dramatically. During low-flow seasons, river 87Sr/86Sr and δ26Mg values evolve to a carbonate weathering signal, whereas river δ7Li reflects a more congruent silicate weathering, and these changes point to the obvious influence of geothermal water in these periods. The covariations of δ7Li, δ26Mg, and discharge are observed. Changes in runoff can significantly impact the isotopic composition of Li and Mg by changing the hydrological flow path, in which dominant reactions of mineral dissolution and secondary mineral formation vary. This study highlights the hydrological control on Li and Mg isotopic compositions of the Nujiang River water, which could be considered the dominant control of monsoon climate on weathering processes in high-relief river basins at a short-term scale.

Magnesium isotope behavior in oceanic magmatic systems: Constraints from mid-ocean ridge lavas from the East Pacific Rise

The magnesium (Mg) isotope composition of oceanic basalts has provided useful constraints on the evolution of the upper mantle and crust-mantle interactions. However, the behavior of Mg isotopes during oceanic magma differentiation is still unclear because of the small range in Mg isotope values in typical normal mid-ocean ridge basalts (N-MORB). Here, we present high-precision Mg isotope data on a well-characterized suite of mid-ocean ridge (MOR) lavas from the 9–10°N segment of the East Pacific Rise. These samples range from relatively primitive basalt to evolved dacite with MgO contents decreasing from 8.62 to 0.80 wt.%, and display a resolvable variation in δ26Mg from -0.27 to -0.17‰. The less-evolved samples (MgO > 7.0 wt.%) that have experienced olivine and plagioclase fractional crystallization have δ26Mg values ranging from -0.23 to -0.17‰ that are negatively correlated with MgO content. Samples containing MgO of 3.5–7.0 wt.%, that have experienced significant crystallization of clinopyroxene, together with plagioclase, show a limited variation of δ26Mg (-0.20 to -0.18‰). For those highly evolved samples (MgO < 3.5 wt.%) saturated with Fe–Ti oxides, the δ26Mg vary from -0.27 to -0.20‰ and are positively correlated with MgO content. The variation of δ26Mg in the MOR lavas is consistent with three stages of magma differentiation, beginning with fractional crystallization of olivine and plagioclase followed by increasing amounts of clinopyroxene and finally joined by Fe-Ti oxides. Quantitative modeling of the Mg isotopic variation in EPR samples, shows that the variation of δ26Mg in MOR lavas is primarily a consequence of fractional crystallization of the Mg-bearing minerals when Δ26MgOl-melt ∼ -0.10‰, Δ26MgCpx-melt ∼ 0.00‰, and Δ26MgTi−Mgt-melt ∼ 0.20‰. This study provides evidence that shallow level crystal fractionation can produce significant and predicable variations in Mg isotopic compositions of MOR lavas and that this process should be carefully considered when using evolved lavas to trace mantle source compositions.

Oxygen Isotopic Variations in the Calcium, Aluminum-rich Inclusion–forming Region Recorded by a Single Refractory Inclusion from the CO3.1 Carbonaceous Chondrite Dar al Gani 083

Calcium, aluminum-rich inclusions (CAIs) are the oldest solids dated that formed in the solar system. Most CAIs in unmetamorphosed chondritic meteorites (chondrites; petrologic type ≤3.0) have uniform solar-like 16O-rich compositions (Δ17O ∼ −24‰) and a high initial 26Al/27Al ratio [(26Al/27Al)0] of ∼(4–5) × 10−5, consistent with their origin in a gas of approximately solar composition during a brief (<0.3 Ma) epoch at the earliest stage of our solar system. The nature of O-isotope heterogeneity in CAIs (Δ17O range from ∼−24 up to ∼+5‰) from weakly metamorphosed chondrites (petrologic type >3.0) remains an open issue. This heterogeneity could have recorded fluctuations of O-isotope composition of nebular gas in the CAI-forming region and/or postcrystallization O-isotope exchange of CAI minerals with aqueous fluids on the chondrite parent asteroids. To obtain insights into possible processes resulting in this heterogeneity, we investigated the mineralogy, rare-earth element abundances, and O- and Mg-isotope compositions of a CAI from the CO3.1 chondrite Dar al Gani 083. This concentrically zoned inclusion has a Zn-hercynite core surrounded by layers of (from core to edge) grossite, spinel, melilite, and Al-diopside. The various phases have heterogeneous Δ17O (from core to edge): −2.2 ± 0.6‰, −0.9 ± 2.1‰, −13.7 ± 2.1‰, −2.6 ± 2.3‰, and −22.6 ± 2.1‰, respectively. Magnesium-isotope compositions of grossite, spinel, melilite, and Al-diopside define an undisturbed internal Al–Mg isochron with (26Al/27Al)0 of (2.60 ± 0.29) × 10−6. We conclude that the variations in Δ17O of spinel and diopside recorded fluctuations in O-isotope composition of nebular gas in the CAI-forming region prior to injection and/or homogenization of 26Al at the canonical level. The 16O depletion of grossite and melilite resulted from O-isotope exchange with asteroidal fluid, which did not disturb Al–Mg isotope systematics of the CAI primary minerals.

Controls on riverine magnesium isotopic composition: Evidence from mono-lithological catchments

The magnesium isotopic composition (δ26Mg) of river water could provide evidence for continental weathering and the global Mg cycle. However, constraining the lithological and isotope fractionation controls on river δ26Mg is still a challenge. Here, we investigated δ26Mg of various compartments in granitic and basaltic catchments, and δ26Mg of river water in sandstone catchments in the Southeastern Tibetan Plateau. Rivers draining sandstone have the lowest δ26Mg values (−1.86‰ to −1.42‰) due to weathering of carbonate which may exhibit as a matrix, cement morphology, and layers crystallized around silicate. The δ26Mg values of river water in granitic and basaltic catchments are −0.72‰ to −0.54‰ and −0.52‰ to −0.30‰, respectively, lower than the soil and plant in the corresponding catchments. Sequestration of isotopically heavy Mg into clays during silicate weathering is predominant and produces a fractionated source of river water with isotopically light Mg. Such Mg isotope fractionation could be affected by denudation rate which changes mineral residence time in these catchments. The strong correlations between Ca/Mg molar ratio, 1/Mg, and δ26Mg value in rivers draining silicate indicate that Mg re-distribution between secondary clays and solutions is proportional to Mg isotope fractionation, the decrease of riverine Mg from silicate weathering will be accompanied by the decrease of riverine δ26Mg. Based on this, a limited impact of Mg isotope fractionation on river δ26Mg is inferred at the continental scale.

Sizeable net export of base cations from a Carpathian flysch catchment indicates their geogenic origin while the 26Mg/24Mg, 44Ca/40Ca and 87Sr/86Sr isotope ratios in runoff are indistinguishable from atmospheric input.

Nutrient imbalances may negatively affect the health status of forests exposed to multiple stress factors, including drought and bark beetle calamities. We studied the origin of base cations in runoff from a small Carpathian catchment underlain by base-poor flysch turbidites using magnesium (Mg), calcium (Ca) and strontium (Sr) isotope composition of 10 ecosystem compartments. Our objective was to constrain conclusions drawn from long-term hydrochemical monitoring of inputs and outputs. Annual export of Mg, Ca and Sr exceeds 5-to-15 times their atmospheric input. Mass budgets per se thus indicate sizeable net leaching of Mg, Ca and Sr from bedrock sandstones and claystones. Surprisingly, δ26Mg, δ44Ca and 87Sr/86Sr isotope ratios of runoff were practically identical to those of atmospheric deposition and soil water but significantly different from bedrock isotope ratios. We did not find any carbonates in the studied area as a hypothetical, easily dissolvable source of base cations whose isotope composition might corroborate the predominance of geogenic base cations in the runoff. Marine carbonates typically have lower δ26Mg and 87Sr/86Sr ratios, and silicate sediments often have higher δ26Mg and 87Sr/86Sr ratios than runoff at the study site. Mixing of these two sources, if confirmed, could reconcile the flux and isotope data.

The influence of peritectic garnets on magnesium isotopic composition during crustal anatexis: Constraints from TTG-like leucosomes from the North Qaidam orogen, China

Tonalitic–trondhjemitic–granodiorite (TTG)-like leucosomes, which are formed from anatectic melts, record crustal growth and evolution and thus provide constraints on the process of anatexis. However, potential Mg isotope disequilibrium during crustal anatexis makes interpreting the genesis of anatectic melts challenging, thereby potentially hindering the application of the Mg isotope system in investigations of crustal evolution and crustal anatexis. A key factor in Mg isotope fractionation during anatexis is the behaviour of garnet, which becomes preferentially enriched in light Mg isotopes compared with other Mg-hosting minerals during partial melting processes. In this study, a combination of petrography, whole-rock geochemistry, and mineral microanalysis reveals that garnets in leucosomes from the Dulan area of the North Qaidam orogen, were formed by dehydration melting of hornblende. Garnet-bearing leucosomes yield low δ26Mg values (−0.70‰ to −0.33‰) compared with garnet-free leucosomes (−0.19‰ to −0.16‰) and global arc rocks (−0.35‰ to 0.06‰). The different Mg isotopic compositions are attributed to the effect of peritectic garnets on the Mg isotope system in anatectic melts. Quantitative modelling further indicates that the lower Mg isotopic values of garnet-bearing leucosomes require the incorporation of ∼5% peritectic garnets into anatectic melts during magma ascent. Our results demonstrate the influence of peritectic garnets on the Mg stable isotope system and highlight that this influence on the Mg isotopic compositions of peritectic minerals during crustal anatexis must be considered in interpretations of crustal evolution using the Mg isotope system.

Fractionation of iron and titanium isotopes by ilmenite and the isotopic compositions of lunar magma ocean cumulates

Basaltic volcanism on the Moon produced low- and high-Ti mare basalt suites that are also distinct with respect to their iron, titanium, and magnesium isotopic compositions. Here, the equilibrium fractionation of Fe and Ti isotopes between ilmenite and melt was experimentally investigated in order to evaluate the role of ilmenite in generating the isotopic compositional variability among the lunar mare basalts. Ilmenite crystallization experiments were conducted using two bulk compositions: an ilmenite-saturated basaltic andesite and an ilmenite-saturated Apollo 14 black glass, and the Fe and Ti isotopic compositions of the experimental ilmenites and glass (quenched melt) were analyzed using solution MC-ICPMS after hand-picking. Additionally, Nuclear Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering (NRIXS) measurements on synthetic ilmenite were conducted and compared to previous NRIXS measurements on synthetic lunar glasses in order to derive temperature-dependent equilibrium ilmenite-melt Fe isotopic fractionations. Experimentally determined ilmenite-melt fractionations were then incorporated into a lunar magma ocean crystallization model that tracks the major element and isotopic compositional evolution of lunar magma ocean cumulates and residual liquid. There is good agreement between the Fe equilibrium isotopic fractionation measured by NRIXS and the laboratory equilibration experiments, and we find that the isotopic fractionation is sensitive to ilmenite compositional differences (0 vs. 10% Fe3+). Further, the light Ti isotopic composition of ilmenite relative to the melt (Δ49Ti=ilmenite-melt−0.09±0.03‰ at 1100∘C) is consistent with the higher coordination of Ti in ilmenite relative to melts and results of previous studies. The modeled Ti isotopic compositions for lunar magma ocean cumulates display Ti isotopic variability sufficient to explain the low- and high-Ti mare basalt sources. However, the difference in Fe isotopic composition between the low- and high-Ti mare basalts cannot be attributed solely to ilmenite fractionation. Instead, Fe isotopic fractionation by additional products of lunar magma ocean crystallization, such as clinopyroxene, is required to generate the inferred Fe and Mg isotopic variability in the lunar mantle. Alternatively, the Fe and Mg isotopic compositions of the lunar mare basalts may indicate Fe-Mg interdiffusion has occurred in the Ti-rich component of the mare basalt source regions via reaction between ilmenite cumulates and the olivine- and pyroxene-rich lunar mantle.

Magnesium isotopic compositions and origin of Neogene dolomites in Xisha Islands, South China Sea

A common consideration of dolomite-based records for paleoseawater geochemistry reconstruction is the process of dolomite precipitation, which is closely related to the source of relevant elements. “Island dolomite” has been proposed as having great potential for recording paleoseawater geochemical characteristics, however, dolomitization should be strictly constrained in advance. As a major element in dolomites, magnesium (Mg) and its isotopes are critically involved in dolomitization, which may serve as a tool for providing direct insights into this process. Here, we report the Mg isotopic compositions of reef dolomites from the well Xike−1 reef core in Xisha Islands, South China Sea. The geochemical and mineralogical characteristics suggest that these reef dolomites experienced limited diagenetic alteration, and retained primary geochemical characteristics after dolomitization was complete. These reef dolomites reached chemical equilibrium with contemporaneous seawater during dolomitization, which were buffered by coeval seawater. Our results suggest that the development of carbonate platform and the formation of reef dolomites in Xisha Islands were related to tectonic subsidence. These reef dolomites were deposited during periods of decreasing tectonic subsidence rate. Then, dolomitization model for these reef dolomites was established, which provides an effective basis for reconstructing the chemical characteristics of paleoseawater. The occurrence of near-invariant seawater δ26Mg value during the past ∼23 Myr was subsequently verified via cross-checks provided by different seawater δ26Mg archives in this and previous studies. Our results highlight the great potential of seawater-buffered dolomites with limited postdepositional diagenetic alteration for constructing paleoseawater geochemistry though the geological history.

The Magnesium Isotope Composition of Samples Returned from Asteroid Ryugu

The nucleosynthetic isotope composition of planetary materials provides a record of the heterogeneous distribution of stardust within the early solar system. In 2020 December, the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency Hayabusa2 spacecraft returned to Earth the first samples of a primitive asteroid, namely, the Cb-type asteroid Ryugu. This provides a unique opportunity to explore the kinship between primitive asteroids and carbonaceous chondrites. We report high-precision μ 26Mg* and μ 25Mg values of Ryugu samples together with those of CI, CM, CV, and ungrouped carbonaceous chondrites. The stable Mg isotope composition of Ryugu aliquots defines μ 25Mg values ranging from –160 ± 20 ppm to –272 ± 30 ppm, which extends to lighter compositions relative to Ivuna-type (CI) and other carbonaceous chondrite groups. We interpret the μ 25Mg variability as reflecting heterogeneous sampling of a carbonate phase hosting isotopically light Mg (μ 25Mg ∼ –1400 ppm) formed by low temperature equilibrium processes. After correcting for this effect, Ryugu samples return homogeneous μ 26Mg* values corresponding to a weighted mean of 7.1 ± 0.8 ppm. Thus, Ryugu defines a μ 26Mg* excess relative to the CI and CR chondrite reservoirs corresponding to 3.8 ± 1.1 and 11.9 ± 0.8 ppm, respectively. These variations cannot be accounted for by in situ decay of 26Al given their respective 27Al/24Mg ratios. Instead, it requires that Ryugu and the CI and CR parent bodies formed from material with a different initial 26Al/27Al ratio or that they are sourced from material with distinct Mg isotope compositions. Thus, our new Mg isotope data challenge the notion that Ryugu and CI chondrites share a common nucleosynthetic heritage.

The magnesium isotopic composition of the mantle

In order to better constrain the Mg isotopic composition of the mantle, we have analysed twenty-eight samples of both oceanic and continental peridotite using a high-precision, critical mixture double spiking approach. The unaltered samples show no variability δ26Mg in outside analytical uncertainty and yield a value of −0.236 ± 0.006‰ (2 s.e.) for the accessible mantle, substantiating its non-chondritic composition. We have also determined inter-mineral Mg isotopic fractionations for a sub-set of samples. We document small but significant differences in δ26Mg between olivine and pyroxenes, Δ26/24Mg ol/cpx = −0.118 ± 0.018‰ and Δ26/24Mg ol/opx = −0.056 ± 0.018‰, in excellent agreement with ab initio calculations for temperatures ∼1000 °C, as recorded by mineral thermometry in the peridotites. The differences in δ26Mg between olivine and spinel (Δ26/24Mg ol/sp) are more variable and generally higher than theoretical calculations at corresponding temperatures, likely due to incomplete Fe-Mg diffusive exchange during post-eruptive cooling of the xenoliths.Using these data, together with a recently determined olivine-melt fractionation factor for Mg isotopes, we show that partial melting has a negligible influence on the δ26Mg of residual peridotites. This helps account for the minimal variability of δ26Mg in fresh, mantle peridotites. However, the δ26Mg of primary mantle melts are predicted to be discernibly higher than their sources (Δ26Mg ∼ 0.06‰ and ∼0.123‰ for representative partial melts of peridotitic and pyroxenitic sources respectively) across a wide range of melting conditions. Such elevated δ26Mg values are not generally observed in the current dataset of mantle derived melts. We propose that this inconsistency is likely a consequence of diffusive fractionation during partial re-equilibration between low Mg/Fe melts migrating through high Mg/Fe mantle en route to the surface.

Heavy magnesium isotopic compositions of basalts erupted during arc inception: Implications for the mantle source underlying the nascent Izu-Bonin-Mariana arc

Basalts formed during the early development of an arc are usually buried, but they record critical information relating to the mantle source of the overriding plate prior to the addition of subducting slab components. Basalts recovered at Site U1438 of International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) Expedition 351, in the Amami Sankaku Basin (ASB), formed during the transition from forearc basalt (FAB) and boninite eruptions to stratovolcano developments in the Izu-Bonin-Mariana (IBM) arc. In this study, we present magnesium (Mg) isotopic data (δ26Mg) for the ASB basalt core samples, formed at arc inception in the absence of down-going slab components, and report the implications of these data for the characteristics of the mantle sources underlying the proto-IBM arc. The δ26Mg values of the ASB basalts range from −0.21‰ to +0.08‰, with an average value of −0.13 ± 0.07‰. These values are systematically higher than those of mid-ocean ridge basalts (MORBs) (−0.25 ± 0.06‰). No obvious effects of post-eruptive alteration, fractional crystallization, partial melting, or subduction component addition can be identified in the Mg isotopic compositions either of the ASB basalts or their mantle source, given the absence of correlations between the δ26Mg values and the proxies of these processes (e.g., K/Nb, Nb/Zr, Ba/La, Nb/Y, etc.). We conclude that the high δ26Mg values of the ASB basalts are inherited from their mantle source that was enriched in heavy Mg isotopes. Melting of an ultra-depleted, refractory spinel peridotite source containing talc-bearing serpentinite components can explain the origin of the heavy Mg isotopic compositions in the ASB basalts. The presence of water-rich serpentinite components in the mantle provides a new perspective on how a refractory mantle source can undergo partial melting at temperatures and pressures similar to the formation of MORBs without the influence of subducted materials, which has important implications for the initiation of plate subduction. Furthermore, the Mg isotopic contributions of subducted additions and mantle source materials should be carefully discussed in future studies due to the heterogeneity of Mg isotopes in the mantle.

Magnesium isotopic composition of the Mariana forearc serpentinite: Implications for Mg isotopic composition of the mantle wedge and Mg isotopic fractionation during mantle wedge serpentinization

Magnesium isotopic composition of the Mariana forearc serpentinite: Implications for Mg isotopic composition of the mantle wedge and Mg isotopic fractionation during mantle wedge serpentinization

Sluggish lithium isotopic response of continental intraplate basalts to recycled sedimentary carbonate

Recognizing the signal of recycled carbonate in the deep mantle and associated basalts is crucial for depicting deep carbon cycling. It has long been recognized that marine sedimentary carbonates have much heavier lithium isotope compositions (δ7Li) than the depleted mantle. However, Li isotope systematics are rarely employed to trace recycled carbonate. To investigate basalt Li isotopic response to recycled carbonate, we carried out whole-rock geochemical and Li isotopic studies on a series of the Cenozoic continental intraplate basalts from eastern China that sample a typical carbonated mantle. The basalts have been reported to have light magnesium (Mg) isotope compositions, but their δ7Li values vary in a limited range (0.9–5.7‰) around the depleted mantle (~3.8 ± 1.4‰). The decoupled LiMg isotopic records are closely related to recycled Mg-rich carbonates (dolomite) that have lighter Mg isotope compositions than the depleted mantle but show mantle-like δ7Li values. After modeling the Li isotopic effects of carbonate sediment, silicate sediment and altered oceanic crust (AOC) recycling, we find that even calcium-rich carbonate recycling is inadequate to shift basalt Li isotope composition. Collectively, Li isotopic responses of intraplate basalts to all types of recycled sedimentary carbonates are more sluggish than expected. Our modeling also suggests that recycling of AOC and silicate sediments is likely responsible for the basalts with δ7Li values higher and lower than the depleted mantle, respectively. In addition, seawater δ7Li values probably exert a first-order role in the Li isotopic response. Low δ7Li values of paleo-seawater (< 20‰) for most of the Earth's history have generated AOC with δ7Li values indistinguishable from the depleted mantle, which goes against the emergence of high δ7Li values for intraplate basalts. Although some limitations exist in Li isotopic applications, we propose that a combination of Li isotopic data and whole-rock element ratios is effective in tracing recycled crustal materials hidden in the intraplate basalts.

Magnesium isotopic composition of modern human teeth enamel and its implications for dietary reconstructions

Metal stable isotopic composition of dental enamel is a novel proxy for reconstructing human dietary structure. Magnesium is the second most prevalent element in teeth only after calcium. Significant isotopic fractionation of Mg isotopes during biological processes implies its great advantages in reconstructing human recipes. To evaluate the potential of the Mg isotopic composition of dental enamel in learning the human dietary structure, elemental and Mg isotopic analyses were performed on the modern human teeth from regions in northern and southern China with various dietary characteristics. Our findings reveal that southern Chinese teeth enamel has higher Mg contents and heavier Mg isotopic compositions (-0.69‰ for SN and -0.66‰ for Hangzhou) than those of their northern counterparts (−1.27‰ for Weinan and −1.33‰ for Puyang). Such discrepancy cannot be attributed to the provenance heterogeneity or individual metabolic processes. Instead, the correlations between cereal-based dietary patterns and the δ26Mg in dental enamel demonstrate that the structure of the staple diet is more responsible for the Mg isotopic signatures. Moreover, heavier Mg isotopic compositions have been observed in dental enamel of individuals with higher rice and lower wheat in the diet, indicating that Mg isotopes are a promising tracer for rebuilding individual or population plant-based dietary structures as well as distinguishing more specific species within C3 plants. These findings suggest that Mg isotopes in teeth enamel have the great potential to better identify the food composition and constrain the diet structure of ancient humans.

Magnesium isotopic composition of back-arc basin lavas and its implication for the recycling of serpentinite-derived fluids

Dehydrated fluids expelled from the serpentinised mantle in subducted slabs contribute significantly to arc magmatism and element cycling on Earth. However, the recycling mechanism of serpentinite-derived fluids at various subduction zone depths remains unclear, as does their contribution to the genesis of back-arc basin lavas. In this study, we investigated magnesium (Mg) isotopic compositions of lavas from the Okinawa Trough (OT) and the Lau Basin, because Mg isotopes have shown great potential in tracing the dehydration of slab serpentinites in recent years. After excluding dubious samples affected by alteration, lavas from the OT and the Lau Basin have heavier Mg isotopic compositions than mid-ocean ridge basalt (MORB) mantle, which could be attributed to the involvement of slab serpentinite-derived fluids rather than crustal assimilation or subducted sediment inputs, as indicated by the isotopic modelling results. The δ26Mg values of the southern OT (SOT) and the southern Lau Basin lavas are generally higher than those in the middle OT (MOT) and the northern Lau Basin, respectively, with an average of −0.09 ± 0.02‰ (2SD, n = 6) for the SOT, −0.18 ± 0.10 ‰ (2SD, n = 9) for the MOT, −0.13 ± 0.08 ‰ for the southern Lau Basin (2SD, n = 5), and − 0.19 ± 0.06 ‰ (2SD, n = 10) for the northern Lau Basin. The binary modelling results show that various quantities of serpentinite-derived fluids could explain the variations in Mg isotopic compositions observed in the OT and the Lau Basin. We suggest that the thermal structure of the inter-subduction zone controls the signal of Mg-rich serpentinite-derived fluids, based on both reported δ26Mg values in subduction zones and our findings. In contrast, the contributions of these fluids to different segments in a specific subduction zone may depend on the slab depth beneath sites of magmatic activity.

Isotopic Composition and Fractionation of Stable Magnesium Isotopes in Relation to Fruits Growing in Different Regions of Russia

Background: Present study on determining the region of origin of raw materials, the authenticity of organic food products is relevant. The determination of the natural content of stable isotopes are not able to answer these questions. The solution can be obtained by studying the ratios and fractionation of stable isotopes, which provide information on the transformations of chemical elements in biological, ecological and geochemical studies. Methods: During 2020-2021 obtained data on the content of magnesium isotopes in apple fruits of 14 varieties from three growing regions of the Russian Federation. Previously, over 10 years, a database was formed of more than 500 samples on the level of potassium, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus and nitrogen cations, depending on the variety and phase of fruit development. Result: Research presents the results of determining the natural content of stable magnesium isotopes in apples, the isotopic composition and their fixation, depending on different regions of the growth of raw materials. The isotopic composition of apples (26Mg/24Mg) varies from 0.1669047 to 0.1782649; the deviation of the magnesium isotopic composition from the conventional standard varies within 25.52-43.52; their chemical fractionation has value: in Central Zone of Russia-185.2-212.3; South of Russia-248.0-311.5; North Caucasus-182.7-214.8.

Magnesium stable isotope composition, but not concentration, responds to obesity and early insulin-resistant conditions in minipig

Hypomagnesemia is frequently associated with type 2 diabetes and generally correlates with unfavorable disease progression, but the magnesium status in pre-diabetic conditions remains unclear. Here, the magnesium metabolism is scrutinized in a minipig model of obesity and insulin resistance by measuring variations of the metallome—the set of inorganic elements—and the magnesium stable isotope composition in six organs of lean and obese minipigs raised on normal and Western-type diet, respectively. We found that metallomic variations are most generally insensitive to lean or obese phenotypes. The magnesium stable isotope composition of plasma, liver, kidney, and heart in lean minipigs are significantly heavier than in obese minipigs. For both lean and obese minipigs, the magnesium isotope composition of plasma and liver were negatively correlated to clinical phenotypes and plasma lipoproteins concentration as well as positively correlated to hyperinsulinemic-euglycemic clamp output. Because the magnesium isotope composition was not associated to insulin secretion, our results suggest that it is rather sensitive to whole body insulin sensitivity, opening perspectives to better comprehend the onset of insulin-resistant diabetic conditions.
