Acyclic and macrocyclic schiff base complexes of lanthanides and actinides

The work reviewed here is the result of a collaborative project designed to explore the interaction of lanthanides and actinides with acyclic and macrocyclic Schiff base ligands. The ligands are penta- and hexa-dentate in character and have present arrays of donors drawn from oxygen, nitrogen and sulphur atoms. The acyclic ligands are capable of allowing binuclear incorporation to occur; this feature was included in the study as is the area of selective metal extraction. A single ligand capable of removing two cations simultaneously would have cost benefit advantage over a ligand capable only of removing a single cation.

Synthesis and X-ray structure of a bicopper(II) Schiff base macrocyclic complex having a single endogenous alkoxy bridge

A bicopper(II) Schiff base macrocycle having an internal alkoxy bridge and strong antiferromagnetic coupling has been synthesised and its structure determined; the complex has similar co-ordination geometry and properties to those reported for oxy- and met-haemocyanin.

The electrochemistry of square planar macrocyclic nickel complexes and the reaction of Ni(I) with alkyl bromides: tetradentate Schiff base complexes

The electrochemistry of nine square planar macrocyclic Schiff base complexes of Ni(II) has been investigated in aprotic solvents. It is shown that all form Ni(I) complexes, and with one exception these species may be reacted with alkyl bromides in processes which are catalytic with respect to the nickel complex. The dependence of the electrochemical parameters and the mechanism and kinetics of the coupled chemical reactions on the structure of the ligands is discussed.

Macrocyclic Schiff base complexes bearing photoactive substituent groups. 1. The azo linkage

The ability of macrocyclic Schiff base complexes to assist in photoenergy transfer and storage phenomena was explored. It was reported that the nickel complex of a macrocyclic ligand synthesized from the parent Schiff base undergoes a photoisomerization about the azo linkage to give the less stable cis azo isomer. The photogenerated cis isomer is reportedly capable of bonding to a second metallomacrocyclic complex and is thus catalytically reisomerized to the trans form. (DDA)
