Preliminary Report on Poultry Parasite Investigation at Macdonald College

The internal parasites of poultry are undoubtedly the cause of very considerable loss to the poultry raiser annually. Numerous postmortem examinations on growing stock soon indicated how prevalent these parasites are. It is quite apparent that a study of these pests in Canada is becoming very necessary.Recognizing the need for such a project as mentioned above the authorities at Macdonald College thought that the best results could be achieved by putting the work on a co-operative basis. In planning such a problem it was realized that there were many angles from which such a problem should be handled if same was to be at all complete. The services of a Parasitologist and an Animal Pathologist were therefore enlisted to lend their aid to the poultrymen in planning and executing the work to be done.During the first year a general survey was made of the field; which was followed .

Rate of Maturity and First-Year Production in Leghorns

In analyzing a study of the relationship existing between time of maturity and annual production of 417 Barred Plymouth Rocks at Macdonald College, Quebec, Dr. M. A. Jull has stated that October-maturing pullets represented a more valuable gross revenue-producing group than any other group, not only because of increased annual production, but also because the rate of production was greater during the season of higher prices. Jull came to the conclusion that birds should be hatched and reared in order to commence laying in October and recommended that egg laying contests should be organized to start the first of October instead of November 1st.The present writers agree with Jull concerning increased profit to be secured from birds that commence laying prior to November 1st but are not convinced that October 1st is a more desirable date for the beginning of egg laying contests. Physics of the Household

THE author of this book is professor of physics in the Macdonald College, an affiliated college of the McGill University, Montreal, where a school of household science is one of the branches of the institution, and it is for students of household science that the book is written. It presents the subject of physics in close relation to its domestic applications, and abounds in illustrations and examples of household appliances and processes. It should be of great use to science teachers, especially those who have to teach girls, in reminding them of the range of familiar things and topics of physical interest that lie in the home environment, and that often lie unheeded and unexplained. Notes on Uredinopsis Mirabilis and Other Rusts

A few culture experiments were carried on during the season of 1913, and, though nothing new was established by these cultures, yet, since some of them confirm important results that rest only on the previous experiments and observations of the writer, a brief record may be of interest. Little culture material could be found in the vicinity of Macdonald College, so that the writer was dependent on the generosity of the following who contributed material for the experiments: Professors R. Matheson and H. W. Smith, of the Nova Scotia Agricultural College, Truro; Mr. Robert Inglis, Pictou, N. S.; Miss Muriel Macrae, Durham, N. S.; and Mr. W. H. Brittain, Plant Pathologist of British Columbia. To these, the writer wishes to express his sincere thanks.

The Pupal Wings of Hepialus Thule

The adult wings of the different species of the genus Hepialus are of particular interest because they show such a generalized condition. They approximate the closest to the hypothetical wing type of Comstock and Needham of any insect’s wings with which I am acquainted. This hypothetical type is supposed to show the number and arrangement of the longitudinal veins as they existed in the primitive insect’s wing. These authors have shown that a study of the arrangement of the tracheae preceding the formation of the veins in developing wings throws much light on the homology of the veins of the adult wing. Many developing wings of Lepidoptera have been studied and figured, but so far as I am aware no investigator has studied and figured the developing wing veins of a species of Hepialus . It was my good fortune, through the kindness of Professor J. M. Swaine of MacDonald College, Quebec, Canada, to obtain pupae of Hepialus thule hardened in formol in the right stage for a study of the developing wing veins. These specimens showed not only the tracheae, which are represented as black lines on the accompanying figure, but also the veins, which are represented as white bands. Unfortunately nothing could be determined as to the arrangement of the tracheae after they left the veins and entered the body. The various veins will be taken up in order.
