A Zambian water project

IN THE FAR west of Zambia lies a region bordered by the Zambezi River in the east, the Capri vi strip in the south and Angola in the west, an area of about 30,000 kilometres. Over the past 20 years refugees have fled here from Angola and, thanks to the hospitality of the Zambian Government and local Zambians, they have been allowed to settle, trying to farm enough for survival out of the sandy soil. Incursions by the South African army in the late 1970s and early 1980s has also caused much disruption; more importantly the poor rains and drought of the past seven years have made farming difficult, creating real hardship. Between 1980 and 1983 various relief efforts were made in the area to provide food and medical aid and to assist the local people in the construction of a number of permanent clinics. Under a tripartite agreement made in 1984 between the government of the Republic of Zambia, the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR), and the Lutheran World Federation (LWF)/ Zambia Christian Refugee Service (ZCRS), a project was established to help improve and promote greater self-sufficiency in agriculture, primary health care and water resources.

Between Martyrdom and Collaboration: A Book Review Article

Religion and Atheism in the U.S.S.R. and Eastern Europe, edited by Bohdan R. Bociurkiw and John W. Strong,1 is a very important work containing essays which on the whole are of unusually high academic quality. The volume, conceived at an international symposium at Carleton University, Ottawa, in 1971, explores from the perspective of several disciplines the post-World War II religious situation in Eastern Europe. There are four parts to the volume: two articles on communism and religion from the Christian and Marxist points of view, seven articles on religion in the U.S.S.R., two transnational surveys of Catholicism and Judaism, and nine essays covering some aspect of religion in each of the Eastern European countries other than the U.S.S.R. The work is truly outstanding in its field and is an indis pensable resource for the complex issues examined. It is impos sible to do full justice to the impressive scholarship and insights disclosed. The limitations of the volume are imposed primarily by the vastness of the problems encountered, the dynamic changes occurring, and the difficulties involved in attempting to transcend one's own ideological context and ascertaining the facts within another system. Sir John Lawrence states in the introduction that a critical gap in the evidence leads some outside observers to imagine a sharper polarisation between 'col laborating' state Churches and 'underground' Churches than really exists (p. xi). The European secretary of the Lutheran World Federation, Dr. Paul Hansen, in his 1976 annual report addresses himself forcefully to the Western missionary organiza tions that convey the impression that the true Christian life is

The Christian Mission to the Chinese People, as Viewed from the Development of the Chinese Church, 1949–1976

With the death of Mao Tse-tung, China is entering a new era. And the Chinese Church is also moving into a new epoch. Such is the conviction of Professor Chao who here wrestles with the question: what do these mean missiologically? Originally presented last summer to the Lutheran World Federation's Consultation on “The Implications of the New China for Missions,” this paper, says the author, “is an attempt to provide a Chinese perspective on the Christian mission to the Chinese people today in the light of the historical developments of the Chinese Church inside and outside China since 1949.”

PARTICIPATION IS EVERYTHING

This document is taken from an interview granted to the editor of O Expositor Cristao by Pastor Manoel de Mello. We have omitted the questions and consolidated the answers. Manoel de Mello is a leader of the Brazilian Igreja Evangélica Pentecostal “Brasil para Cristo” — a Pentecostal denomination with about one million members. In São Paulo, Manoel de Mello is building the largest church in the world. It seats 25,000 people, and has many additional halls and rooms for adult education, workshops, etc. De Mello was one of the Pentecostals from Latin America who attended the Fourth Assembly of the World Council of Churches at Uppsala. He also was guest of the Assembly of the Lutheran World Federation at Evian (1970), where — in fact — he was, for part of the time, the only representative of a Brazilian Church.In the report below he states the reasons why his church has decided to join the WCC. The editors of the news‐service of the Centro Evangélico de Informação (São Paulo) introduce the report with the following noteworthy remark: “With this ecumenical consciousness directed towards renewal, the Pentecostals should become the greatest revolutionary force in Protestant thought in Brazil.” Editor

An appraisal of the Lambourne appraisal

It is my good fortune to have had two rewarding experiences of personal contact with Robert A. Lambourne. The first was at a week-long conference on health and salvation in Germany under the auspices of the World Council of Churches and the Lutheran World Federation. The second was at Princeton Seminary where, a year ago, Dr. Lambourne visited us for a few days as he was "casing the joint" about pastoral theology in this country. When the Editor asked me routinely, as a member of the Editorial Advisory Board, to read the manuscript of the Lambourne article, I did so with pleasure; and as soon as I could get to my typewriter, strongly recommended the publication of this remarkably perceptive paper. Even though I thought then as I do now that Lambourne has given us just exactly the kind of fresh perspective we need, and thus that his is one of the most important pieces ever published by this journal, I had, and have, a few questions; and so I made the mistake of offering to write a critique to go alongside the Lambourne paper.
