Extended emission-line regions around QSOs

A narrow-band forbidden O III 5007 A imaging survey of a sample of 47 luminous low-redshift QSOs is reported. The ionized gas is found to be not well correlated with the extended continuum material, as would be expected if it were normal interstellar gas. The distribution of the ionized gas in most of the objects is highly structured over scales of tens of kpc, but this structure is generally quite asymmetric and is clearly not that of gas in an equilibrium configuration. The results are consistent with the assumption that the extended gas has been ionized by the UV continuum from the QSO nucleus. The correlations between the presence of strong extended emission and both the strength of the nuclear narrow-line emission and the radio spectral index generally confirm the results of Boroson and Oke (1984) and Boroson et al. (1985).

More low-redshift broad absorption line QSOs

The discovery of two new broad absorption line (BAL) QSOs with emission redshifts of 1.024 and 0.129 is reported. The discovery of the two new low-redshift BAL QSOs strengthens the evidence that the fraction of QSOs with BALs at low redshifts is similar to the 3-10-percent fraction found at higher redshifts. In particular, the analysis suggests that the fraction of luminous QSOs with BALs lies in the range f = 0.07-0.21 and that there is a significant deficit of BALs among objects with B magnitudes greater than -23.5 (e.g., Seyfert 1 type objects). Ultraviolet and optical spectra of the two objects covering 1200-5900 A are presented. 20 references.

An atlas of X-ray-selected quasi-stellar objects

Coordinates, finding charts, photometry, and spectroscopy are presented for 55 X-ray selected QSOs. The selection technique, optical identification of X-ray sources observed serendipitously by the Einstein Observatory was used to find QSOs projected near bright galaxies, pairs of QSOs with similar redshifts; and low-redshift QSOs (z less than 0.5) which are well suited for imaging. Very luminous QSOs of more than 10 to the 46th ergs/s, and a very-high redshift X-ray-selected object were also found. It is suggested that most efforts to identify optically faint QSO counterparts to X-ray sources may yield intrinsically less luminous objects at redshifts less than 1 due to the weak influence of the limiting magnitude on the mean redshift of the sample. Abstract The nebulosities around five optically selected (by UV excess) luminous QSOs have been observed spectroscopically. 3C 273, which has been observed off-nucleus before, has nebulosity dominated by a stellar continuum. TON 202, a steep-spectrum radio source, has nebulosity dominated by strong Balmer and [O III] emission lines. In addition, the spectra of the nuclear regions of 12 low-luminosity QSOs are presented. Nebulosity spectra of these objects were obtained earlier. A sample of 24 objects with surrounding nebulosities is statistially analyzed. It is shown that these objects can be separated into two groups, defined by the equivalent width of the [O III] λ5007 emission line in the nebulosity. The differences in the fundamental properties of these two groups are worked out and the implications for theoretical models of active galactic nuclei are discussed. MacKenty, J. W. ; Stockton, A. Abstract Images and spectra of the extended luminous material associated with the low-redshift QSO Markarian 1014 are presented. Stellar absorption lines indicative of an admixture of early- and late-type stars are present at the same redshift as that of the QSO nucleus. The distribution of the luminous material is highly asymmetric, appears spiral-like, and on a deep CCD image, its total extent is about 90 kpc. Markarian 1014 is one of the most striking examples yet found of a galaxy with a fairly luminous QSO nucleus. The large extent and asymmetry of the stellar distribution and the spectroscopic evidence for a recent burst of star formation point to a large-scale perturbation of the galaxy, perhaps the result of a recent interaction or merger. 3CR249.1 and Ton202—luminous QSOs in interacting systems

The morphologies of the extended emission-line regions around the QSOs 3CR249.1 and Ton202 indicate that they have, in both cases, resulted from interactions between two galaxies of roughly equal mass and that the galaxies involved possessed extensive rotating gaseous disks before their encounters. These two examples provide support for the position that luminous QSOs are frequently activated by violent interactions. More generally, the distribution of gas around luminous QSOs promises to be a sensitive and useful indicator of the recent history of their physical environment.

Abstract Based on image-tube dissector scans performed at resolutions of 4 A and about 10 A, the 17.3-mag neutral stellar object identified with the radio source PKS 2126-15 is found to have an emission-line redshift of 3.270 + or - 0.004 as well as a very rich absorption spectrum shortward of Ly-alpha. Observed emission features are identified. C IV/Ly-alpha absorption systems are observed at redshifts of 2.768, 2.635, and 2.392. It is noted that PKS 2126-15 is the brightest and one of the intrinsically most luminous QSOs known. Radio spectra for three QSOs

RADIO spectra are presented for three sources of current interest: 1548 + 114 (4C 1150) which is one of two quasars separated by about 5 arc s which have been suggested as possibly associated despite widely disparate redshifts1; 1331 + 170 which is a very luminous QSO with a rich absorption spectrum and suggested line locking between the emission spectrum and two separate absorption systems2; and 1442 + 101 (OQ172) which has the currently highest known redshift3, z = 3.53.
