First-principles design of heavy-atom-free singlet oxygen photosensitizers for photodynamic therapy.

In photodynamic therapy (PDT) treatment, heavy-atom-free photosensitizers (PSs) are a great source of singlet oxygen photosensitizer. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are produced by an energy transfer from the lowest energy triplet excited state to the molecular oxygen of cancer cells. To clarify the photophysical characteristics in the excited states of a few experimentally identified thionated (>C=S) molecules and their oxygenated congeners (>C=O), a quantum chemical study is conducted. This study illustrates the properties of the excited states in oxygen congeners that render them unsuitable for PDT treatment. Concurrently, a hierarchy is presented based on the utility of the lowest-energy triplet excitons of thionated compounds. Their non-radiative decay rates are calculated for reverse-ISC and inter-system crossover (ISC) processes. In addition, the vibronic importance of C=O and C=S bonds is clarified by the computation of the Huang-Rhys factor, effective vibrational mode, and reorganization energy inside the Marcus-Levich-Jörtner system. ROS generation in thionated PSs exceeds their oxygen congeners as kf ≪ kISC, where radiative decay rate is designated as kf. As a result, the current work offers a calculated strategy for analyzing the effectiveness of thionated photosensitizers in PDT.

Nanosecond Laser Flash Photolysis Study of the Photochemistry of 2‑Alkoxy Thioxanthones

Laser flash photolysis studies (l = 355 nm) on the characterization and reactivity for the triplet excited state of 2-methoxythioxanthone, 2-benzyloxythioxanthone, and 2-(n-propoxy) thioxanthone revealed that the transients generated in their excitation, in acetonitrile, have absorption bands with maxima at 310 and 620 nm. These transients decayed by a mixed 1st and 2nd order kinetics, with a lifetime of 5.3 ms for 2-methoxythioxanthone and benzyloxythioxanthone and 3.9 ms for 2-(n-propoxy) thioxanthone. In methanol, ethanol, and 2-propanol, a new absorption at 430-460 nm was observed, which was attributed to their corresponding ketyl radical (the second-order quenching rate constant (kq) is ca. 105 L mol-1 s-1). The energy transfer rate constants for trans-stilbene, 1-methylnaphthalene, and 1,3-cyclohexadiene were diffusion-controlled, indicating a triplet energy for these alkoxy thioxanthones higher than 61 kcal mol-1. The quenching rate constant observed for 1,4-cyclohexadiene (ca.109 L mol-1 s-1) suggests that the lowest energy triplet excited state for these thioxanthones must have nπ* character. For phenols and indole (kq ca. 109 L mol-1 s-1), the reaction mechanism must involve the initial formation of a triplet exciplex, followed by a coupled electron/proton transfer. For triethylamine and 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane (kq ca. 109 L mol-1 s-1) it was observed the formation of the radical anion of the alkoxy thioxanthones formed from electron transfer (l = 410 nm).

String-Attached Oligothiophene Substituents Determine the Fate of Excited States in Ruthenium Complexes for Photodynamic Therapy.

We explore the photophysical properties of a family of Ru(II) complexes, Ru-ip-nT, designed as photosensitizers (PSs) for photodynamic therapy (PDT). The complexes incorporate a 1H-imidazo[4,5-f][1,10]-phenanthroline (ip) ligand appended to one or more thiophene rings. One of the complexes studied herein, Ru-ip-3T (known as TLD1433), is currently in phase II human clinical trials for treating bladder cancer by PDT. The potent photocytotoxicity of Ru-ip-3T is attributed to a long-lived intraligand charge-transfer triplet state. The accessibility of this state changes upon varying the length (n) of the oligothiophene substituent. In this paper, we highlight the impact of n on the ultrafast photoinduced dynamics in Ru-ip-nT, leading to the formation of the function-determining long-lived state. Femtosecond time-resolved transient absorption combined with resonance Raman data was used to map the excited-state relaxation processes from the Franck-Condon point of absorption to the formation of the lowest-energy triplet excited state, which is a triplet metal-to-ligand charge-transfer excited state for Ru-ip-0T-1T and an oligothienyl-localized triplet intraligand charge-transfer excited state for Ru-ip-2T-4T. We establish the structure-activity relationships with regard to changes in the excited-state dynamics as a function of thiophene chain length, which alters the photophysics of the complexes and presumably impacts the photocytotoxicity of these PSs.

Probing Molecular Excited States by Atomic Force Microscopy.

By employing single charge injections with an atomic force microscope, we investigated redox reactions of a molecule on a multilayer insulating film. First, we charged the molecule positively by attaching a single hole. Then we neutralized it by attaching an electron and observed three channels for the neutralization. We rationalize that the three channels correspond to transitions to the neutral ground state, to the lowest energy triplet excited states and to the lowest energy singlet excited states. By single-electron tunneling spectroscopy we measured the energy differences between the transitions obtaining triplet and singlet excited state energies. The experimental values are compared with density functional theory calculations of the excited state energies. Our results show that molecules in excited states can be prepared and that energies of optical gaps can be quantified by controlled single-charge injections. Our work demonstrates the access to, and provides insight into, ubiquitous electron-attachment processes related to excited-state transitions important in electron transfer and molecular optoelectronics phenomena on surfaces.

Ground and Excited State Electronic Structures of d8-Squared Planar Platinum(II) and Gold(III) Complexes Bearing Cyclometallated 2,6-Diphenylpyridine and Pyrene-Derived N-Heterocyclic Carbene

Electronic structures of four pyrene-derived N-heterocyclic carbene complexes of platinum(II) and gold(III) bearing cyclometallated 2,6-diphenylpyridine have been investigated theoretically. The structures of all complexes in gas phase have been first optimized. Different functionals and basis sets have been tested to find the best theoretical method. The results show that B3PW91 (LANL2DZ/6-31G*) combination give the best description of the molecules as compared with experimentally determined structural features. Using the calculation data from that best functional and mixed basis set combination, frontier molecular orbitals of the complexes have been examined. To gain understanding on the nature of electronic transitions in the UV-vis absorption spectra of the compounds, TD-DFT calculations have been carried out. A details analysis of the vertical excitation reveals that the nature of all the vertical electronic transitions in the complexes. Notably, the lowest energy transitions are πcb + dPt → $$\pi _{{{\text{cb}}}}^{{\text{*}}}$$ (for Pt1 and Pt2) and πCNC → dAu + $$\pi _{{{\text{CNC}}}}^{{\text{*}}}$$ (for Au1 and Au2) charge transfer in nature. A sharp contrast in lowest energy triplet excited state for d8‑squared planar Au1 and Pt1 has been demonstrated. While no contribution from gold(III) d orbital to the SOMO and SOMO – 1 orbital of Au1, there is significant contribution of platinum(II) dyz orbital in the SOMO – 1 orbital of Pt1, suggesting possible interaction of this singly occupied orbital with radical of π-symmetry substrates.

Synthesis and Computational and Experimental Investigations of a para-Nicotinic Acid-Bridged Dirhenium(I) Dimer Complex.

The Re(I) dimer complex, [fac(CO)3(phen)Re1-N(py)COORe2(phen)fac(CO)3]+ (py = pyridine; phen = 1,10-phenanthroline), contains two different Re(I) centers 9.3 Å apart, one with a nitrogen donor and the other with an acetate donor from the bridging isonicotinate ligand. The complexes were characterized by 1H NMR, UV–vis, fluorescence, and IR spectroscopy, elemental analysis, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The absorption and emission properties of the dimer dominated by charge transfer transitions are analyzed with respect to those of the monomers, [fac(CO)3(phen)Re-N(pyCOOCH3)]+ and [fac(CO)3(phen)ReOOCCH3]. Spectral comparison of these three complexes results in the unexpected finding that the dimer emission (575 nm) occurs near that of the nicotinate-containing monomer (580 nm) rather than near the lower energy-emitting state (650 nm) of the acetate-containing monomer. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations elucidate this unusual emission behavior. The geometries of the dimer and two monomers are optimized in the singlet ground and lowest-energy triplet excited states (LLTS’s) to interpret absorption and emission behaviors, respectively. The singlet excited states calculated using time-dependent DFT correlate well with the absorption spectra in the lowest-energy and other major electronic transitions. The energy gaps and low-lying singlet excited states of the dimer are close to those of the acetate-containing monomer. The lowest-energy Franck–Condon triplet excited state of the dimer arising from electronic transitions localized on the acetate moiety is unstable. The next higher Franck–Condon triplet excited state arises from long-range charge transfer transition, and its energy is close to that of the nicotinate-containing monomer. Optimization of the dimer LLTS yields a stable state based on a long-range charge transfer transition involving occupied orbitals partially localized on the bridging nicotinate moiety. The LLTS energies of the dimer and nicotinate-containing monomer are in very good agreement as are the emission energies of these complexes. The correlated spectroscopic and computational results corroborate to the understanding of charge transfer states and transitions toward the development of photosensitive compounds for photoelectrochemical solar energy conversion cells.

Excited-State Switching between Ligand-Centered and Charge Transfer Modulated by Metal-Carbon Bonds in Cyclopentadienyl Iridium Complexes.

Three series of pentamethylcyclopentadienyl (Cp*) Ir(III) complexes with different bidentate ligands were synthesized and structurally characterized, [Cp*Ir(tpy)L] n+ (tpy = 2-tolylpyridinato; n = 0 or 1), [Cp*Ir(piq)L] n+ (piq = 1-phenylisoquinolinato; n = 0 or 1), and [Cp*Ir(bpy)L] m+ (bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine; m = 1 or 2), featuring a range of monodentate carbon-donor ligands within each series [L = 2,6-dimethylphenylisocyanide; 3,5-dimethylimidazol-2-ylidene (NHC); methyl)]. The spectroscopic and photophysical properties of these molecules and those of the photocatalyst [Cp*Ir(bpy)H]+ were examined to establish electronic structure-photophysical property relationships that engender productive photochemical reactivity of this hydride and its methyl analogue. The Ir(III) chromophores containing ancillary CNAr ligands exhibited features anticipated for predominantly ligand-centered (LC) excited states, and analogues bearing the NHC ancillary exhibited properties consistent with LC excited states containing a small admixture of metal-to-ligand charge-transfer (MLCT) character. However, the molecules featuring anionic and strongly σ-donating methyl or hydride ligands exhibited photophysical properties consistent with a high degree of CT character. Density functional theory calculations suggest that the lowest energy triplet states in these complexes are composed of a mixture of MLCT and ligand-to-ligand CT originating from both the Cp* and methyl or hydride ancillary ligands. The high degree of CT character in the triplet excited states of methyliridium complexes bearing C^N-cyclometalated ligands offer a striking contrast to the photophysical properties of pseudo-octahedral structures fac-Ir(C^N)3 or Ir(C^N)2(acac) that have lowest-energy triplet excited states characterized as primarily LC character with a more moderate MLCT admixture.

Electronic nature of the emitting triplet in SF5-substituted cationic Ir(III) complexes

A theoretical density functional theory study has been performed on a family of cationic iridium(III) complexes of the form [Ir(C^N)2(dtBubpy)]+ (dtBubpy = 4,4′-di-tert-butyl-2,2′-bipyridine), that incorporate 2-phenylpyridine (1, 2) and 1-phenylpyrazole (3, 4) cyclometallating C^N ligands functionalized with SF5 groups. The goal is to investigate the effect that the inclusion of SF5 groups in meta (1, 3) and para position (2, 4) with respect to the Ir–C bond has on the electronic nature of the emitting triplet state and the emission wavelength. The attachment of the electron-withdrawing groups induces the stabilization of the molecular orbitals localized on the C^N ligands and, in particular, of the highest-occupied molecular orbital (HOMO). This stabilization enlarges the energy gap between the HOMO and the lowest-unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO), and shifts to higher energies the metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) triplet described by the HOMO → LUMO excitation. As a consequence, a triplet state of ligand-centered (LC) nature becomes the lowest-energy triplet excited state for all the four complexes. For complexes 1 and 2, the state is centered on the C^N ligands (3LCC^N) and the introduction of the SF5 groups in para causes a greater effect than their insertion in meta. Substitution of the pyridine ring by a pyrazole ring in complexes 3 and 4 destabilizes the 3LCC^N states and the lowest-energy triplet involves the diimine N^N ligand (3LCN^N). Theoretical calculations therefore predict that the electronic nature of the lowest-lying triplet drastically changes in passing from the unsubstituted complex (3MLCT) to complexes 1 and 2 (3LCC^N) and to complexes 3 and 4 (3LCN^N). These changes help to rationalize the aspect of the emission spectra and the shift to the blue of the emission wavelength. The appearance of low energy 3LC triplets centered on the ancillary ligand, whose energy is hardly affected by changes in the C^N ligands structure, constitutes a limit to blue-shift the phosphorescence emission in this kind of complexes.

Ultrafast Excited-State Dynamics in Cyclometalated Ir(III) Complexes Coordinated with Perylenebisimide and Its π-Radical Anion Ligands

Cyclometalated Ir(III) complexes showing strong absorption of visible light and a long-lived triplet state are of particular interest as photocatalysts and photosensitizers. Steady-state and femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy, complemented with TD-DFT computations, are used to study the ultrafast intersystem crossing (ISC) dynamics of two perylenebisimide (PBI)-containing cyclometalated Ir(III) complexes (Ir–PBI and Ir–NPBI). The S1 → Tn ISC dynamics of these complexes is ultrafast, similar to the conventional Ir(III) complexes bearing a 1MLCT → 3MLCT transition. Much longer triplet decay lifetimes are observed in Ir–PBI (τT = 11.4 μs) and Ir–NPBI (τT = 7.9 μs) compared to conventional Ir(III) complexes (τT < 5 μs). This can be rationalized by the character of the lowest-energy triplet excited state (T1). In the case of the PBI-containing complexes, the T1 is of intraligand character (3IL), and the T1 → S0 spin–orbital coupling (SOC) is 3 cm–1. This is in contrast with conventional Ir(III) comp...

Metal-to-Ligand Charge-Transfer Emissions of Ruthenium(II) Pentaammine Complexes with Monodentate Aromatic Acceptor Ligands and Distortion Patterns of their Lowest Energy Triplet Excited States

This is the first report of the 77 K triplet metal-to-ligand charge-transfer ((3)MLCT) emission spectra of pentaammine-MDA-ruthenium(II) ([Ru(NH3)5(MDA)](2+)) complexes, where MDA is a monodentate aromatic ligand. The emission spectra of these complexes and of the related trans-[Ru(NH3)4(MDA) (MDA')](2+) complexes are closely related, and their emission intensities are very weak. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate that the energies of the lowest (3)MLCT excited states of Ru-MDA complexes are either similar to or lower than those of the lowest energy metal-centered excited states ((3)MC(X(Y))), that the barrier to internal conversion at 77 K is large compared to kBT, and that the (3)MC(X(Y)) excited states are weakly bound. The [Ru(NH3)5py](2+) complex is an exception to the general pattern: emission has been observed for the [Ru(ND3)5(d5-py)](2+) complex, but its lifetime is apparently very short. DFT modeling indicates that the excited state distortions of the different (3)MC excited states are very large and are in both Ru-ligand bonds along a single Cartesian axis for each different (3)MC excited state, nominally resulting in (3)MC(X(Y)), (3)MC((X)Y), and (3)MC(Z) lowest energy metal-centered states. The (3)MC(X(Y)) and (3)MC((X)Y) states appear to be the pseudo-Jahn-Teller distorted components of a (3)MC((XY)) state. The (3)MC(X(Y)) states are distorted up to 0.5 Å in each H3N-Ru-NH3 bond along a single Cartesian axis in the pentaammine and trans-tetraammine complexes, whereas the (3)MC(Z) states are found to be dissociative. DFT modeling of the (3)MLCT excited state of [Ru(NH3)5(py)](2+) indicates that the Ru center has a spin density of 1.24 at the (3)MLCT energy minimum and that the (3)MLCT → (3)MC(Z) crossing is smooth with a very small barrier (<0.5 kcal/mol) along the D3N-Ru-py distortion coordinate, implying strong (3)MLCT/(3)MC excited state configurational mixing. Furthermore, the DFT modeling indicates that the long-lived intermediate observed in earlier flash photolysis studies of [Ru(NH3)5py](2+) is a Ru(II)-(η(2)(C═C)-py) species.

Computational studies on the radiative and nonradiative processes of luminescent N-heteroleptic platinum(II) complexes

Three N-heteroleptic Pt(II) complexes, [Pt(C^C)(O^O)] [O^O=acetylacetonate, C^C=1-phenyl-1,2,4-triazol-5-ylidene (1), C^C=4-phenyl-1,2,4-triazol-5-ylidene (2), C^C=2-phenylpyrazine (3)] have been investigated with density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT). The radiative decay rate constants of complexes 1–3 have been discussed with the oscillator strength (fn), the strength of spin–orbit coupling (SOC) interaction between the lowest energy triplet excited state (T1) and singlet excited states (Sn), and the energy gaps between E(T1) and E(Sn). To illustrate the nonradiative decay processes, the transition states between triplet metal-centered (3MC) and T1 states have been optimized and were verified with the calculations of vibrational frequencies and intrinsic reaction coordinate (IRC). In addition, the minimum energy crossing points (MECPs) between 3MC and ground states (S0) were optimized. At last, the potential energy curves relevant to the nonradiative decay pathways are simulated. The results show that complex 3 has the biggest photoluminescence quantum yield because the complex 3 has the biggest radiative decay rate constant and the smallest nonradiative decay rate constant in complexes 1–3.

A density functional theory and spectroscopic study of intramolecular quenching of metal-to-ligand charge-transfer excited states in some mono-bipyridine ruthenium(II) complexes

The complexes [Ru(NCCH3)4bpy]2+ and [Ru([14]aneS4)bpy]2+ ([14]aneS4 = 1,4,8,11-tetrathiacyclotetradecane, bpy = 2,2′-bipyridine) have similar absorption and emission spectra but the 77 K metal-to-ligand charge-transfer (MLCT) excited state emission lifetime of the latter is less than 0.3% that of the former. Density functional theory modeling of the lowest energy triplet excited states indicates that triplet metal centered (3MC) excited states are about 3500 cm−1 lower in energy than their 3MLCT excited states in both complexes. The differences in excited state lifetimes arise from a much larger coordination sphere distortion for [Ru(NCCH3)4bpy]2+ and the associated larger reorganizational barrier for intramolecular electron transfer. The smaller ruthenium ligand distortions of the [Ru([14]aneS4)bpy]2+ complex are apparently a consequence of stereochemical constraints imposed by the macrocyclic [14]aneS4 ligand, and the 3MC excited state calculated for the unconstrained [Ru(S(CH3)2)4bpy]2+ complex (S(CH3)2 = dimethyl sulfide) is distorted in a manner similar to that of [Ru(NCCH3)4bpy]2+. Despite the lower energy calculated for its 3MC than 3MLCT excited state, [Ru(NCCH3)4bpy]2+ emits strongly in 77 K glasses with an emission quantum yield of 0.47. The emission is biphasic with about a 1 μs lifetime for its dominant (86%) emission component. The 405 nm excitation used in these studies results in a significant amount of photodecomposition in the 77 K glasses. This is a temperature-dependent biphotonic process that most likely involves the bipyridine-radical anionic moiety of the 3MLCT excited state. A smaller than expected value found for the radiative rate constant is consistent with a lower energy 3MC than 3MLCT state.

Heteroleptic Cyclometalated Iridium(III) Complexes Supported by Triarylborylpicolinate Ligand: Ratiometric Turn-On Phosphorescence Response upon Fluoride Binding

Heteroleptic cyclometalated iridium(III) complexes (C^N)2Ir(Bpic) (4-6) (C^N = dfppy (4), ppy (5), btp (6)) supported by triarylborylpicolinate (Bpic) ancillary ligand were synthesized and characterized. X-ray diffraction study of 5 confirmed N^O chelation of the Bpic ligand to the iridium center forming an (C^N)2Ir-borane conjugate. While the UV/vis absorption bands of 4-6 remained almost unchanged in the low-energy region upon fluoride addition, a ratiometric turn-on phosphorescence response was observed for 4 and 5. In contrast, the phosphorescence of 6 was little affected by fluoride binding. Experimental and theoretical studies suggest that the LUMO in neutral 4 and 5 is dominated by the Bpic ligand, which makes the weakly emissive (3)ML'CT/(3)LL'CT (L = C^N; L' = Bpic) states as the lowest-energy triplet excited state, while the fluoride binding to 4 and 5 induces the highly emissive (3)MLCT/(3)ππ* states centered on the (C^N)2Ir moiety. Thermally induced conversion from the (3)MLCT/(3)ππ* to the (3)ML'CT/(3)LL'CT states is suggested to be responsible for the low-energy weak phosphorescence in 4 and 5.

Generation of Powerful Tungsten Reductants by Visible Light Excitation

The homoleptic arylisocyanide tungsten complexes, W(CNXy)6 and W(CNIph)6 (Xy = 2,6-dimethylphenyl, Iph = 2,6-diisopropylphenyl), display intense metal to ligand charge transfer (MLCT) absorptions in the visible region (400-550 nm). MLCT emission (λ(max) ≈ 580 nm) in tetrahydrofuran (THF) solution at rt is observed for W(CNXy)6 and W(CNIph)6 with lifetimes of 17 and 73 ns, respectively. Diffusion-controlled energy transfer from electronically excited W(CNIph)6 (*W) to the lowest energy triplet excited state of anthracene (anth) is the dominant quenching pathway in THF solution. Introduction of tetrabutylammonium hexafluorophosphate, [Bu(n)4N][PF6], to the THF solution promotes formation of electron transfer (ET) quenching products, [W(CNIph)6](+) and [anth](•-). ET from *W to benzophenone and cobalticenium also is observed in [Bu(n)4N][PF6]/THF solutions. The estimated reduction potential for the [W(CNIph)6](+)/*W couple is -2.8 V vs Cp2Fe(+/0), establishing W(CNIph)6 as one of the most powerful photoreductants that has been generated with visible light.

A theoretical study of luminescent vapochromic compounds including an AuCu2(NHC)2 core

Vapochromic complexes [Au(im(CH(2)py)(2))(2)(Cu(MeCN)(2))(2)](3+) 1, [Au(im(CH(2)py)(2))(2)(Cu(MeOH))(2)](3+) 2 and [Au(im(CH(2)py)(2))(2)(Cu(H(2)O))(2)](3+) 3 were theoretically investigated. The Au–Cu distances of 1 and 2 (4.631 Å and 2.767 Å, respectively) optimized by the SCS-MP2 method in this work agree with the literature experimental values (4.591 Å and 2.792 Å). Their structural features are explained by computational results: (i) in 1, two MeCN molecules coordinate with the Cu center, because of the strong coordination ability of MeCN, to afford a four-coordinate tetrahedral-like Cu center. This geometry needs a long Au–Cu distance. (ii) In 2 and 3, only one MeOH or H(2)O molecule coordinates with the Cu center because of their weak coordination abilities, to afford a three-coordinate planar Cu center. Because the three-coordinate Cu center is flexible, the Au–Cu distance becomes short due to the Au–Cu metallophilic interaction, the strength of which is 5.3 kcal mol(−1) at the SCS-MP2 level. The emission energies of 1, 2 and 3 (2.62, 2.40 and 2.38 eV, respectively) calculated here by the B3PW91 agree with their literature experimental values (2.68, 2.47, and 2.39 eV). The lowest energy triplet excited state (T(1)) is assigned as the excitation from the Cu d to the pyridine π* orbital in 1 and that from the Au–Cu 5d–3d anti-bonding MO to the Au–Cu 6p–4sp bonding MO in 2 and 3. As a result, the emission energy from the T(1) to the ground state is different between these compounds. The difference in Au–Cu distance is one of the important factors for the differences in emission energy and assignment between 1 and others (2 and 3). The vapochromism of these compounds arises from the difference in Au–Cu distance which is determined by the balance between the strengths of the coordination of a gas molecule and the Au–Cu metallophilic interaction; in other words, the Au–Cu heterometallophilic interaction is important for the vapochromic activity of the complex.

Role of the Low-Energy Excited States in the Radiolysis of Aromatic Liquids

The contribution of the low-energy excited states to the overall product formation in the radiolysis of simple aromatic liquids--benzene, pyridine, toluene, and aniline--has been examined by comparison of product yields obtained in UV-photolysis and in γ-radiolysis. In photolysis, these electronic excited states were selectively populated using UV-light excitation sources with various energies. Yields of molecular hydrogen and of "dimers" (biphenyl, bibenzyl, dipyridyl for benzene, toluene, pyridine, respectively, and of ammonia and diphenylamine for aniline) have been determined, since they are the most abundant radiolytic products. Negligibly small production of molecular hydrogen in the UV-photolysis of aromatic liquids with excitation to energies of 4.88, 5.41, 5.79, and 6.70 eV and the lack of a scavenger effect suggest that this product originates from short-lived high-energy singlet states. A significant reduction in "dimer" radiation-chemical yields in the presence of scavengers such as anthracene or naphthalene indicates that the triplet excited states are important precursors to these products. The results for toluene and aniline suggest that efficient dissociation from the lowest-energy excited triplet state leads to noticeable "dimer" production. For benzene and pyridine, the lowest-energy triplet excited states are not likely to fragment into radicals because of the relatively large energy gap between the excited state level and corresponding bond dissociation energy. The "dimer" formation in the radiolysis of benzene and pyridine is likely to involve short-lived high-energy triplet states.

Triplet Excited State Distortions in a Pyrazolate Bridged Platinum Dimer Measured by X-ray Transient Absorption Spectroscopy

The excited-state structure of a dinuclear platinum(II) complex with tert-butyl substituted pyrazolate bridging units, [Pt(ppy)(μ-(t)Bu(2)pz)](2) (ppy = 2-phenylpyridine; (t)Bu(2)pz = 3,5-di-tert-butylpyrazolate) is studied by X-ray transient absorption (XTA) spectroscopy to reveal the transient electronic and nuclear geometry. DFT calculations predict that the lowest energy triplet excited state, assigned to a metal-metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MMLCT) transition, has a contraction in the Pt-Pt distance. The Pt-Pt bond length and other structural parameters extracted from fitting the experimental XTA difference spectra from full multiple scattering (FMS) and multidimensional interpolation calculations indicates a metal-metal distance decrease by approximately 0.2 Å in the triplet excited state. The advantages and challenges of this approach in resolving dynamic transient structures of nonbonding or weak-bonding dinuclear metal complexes in solution are discussed.

Lowest triplet excited states of a novel heteroleptic iridium(III) complex and their role in the emission colour

The [Ir(ppy-F 2) 2Me 4phen] +1 complex, where ppy-F 2 is 2-(2′,4′-fluorophenyl)pyridine and Me 4phen is 3,4,7,8-tetramethyl-1,10-phenanthroline, has been theoretically investigated by means of DFT calculations. The molecular and electronic properties calculated for [Ir(ppy-F 2) 2Me 4phen] +1 are compared with those obtained for the simpler [Ir(ppy)(bpy)] +1 complex. The introduction of fluorine substituents in the ppy ligands and the use of phenanthroline instead of 2,2′-bipyridine as the diimine ligand increase the HOMO–LUMO energy gap and blue-shift the emission colour. The phenanthroline ligand causes the appearance of two nearly-degenerate LUMO orbitals of different symmetry in [Ir(ppy-F 2) 2Me 4phen] +1 and determines that two almost isoenergetic doublet states are obtained for the reduced complex. Calculations predict three lowest-energy triplet excited states of different nature in an energy difference of only 0.10 eV. Emission from the 3LC π–π* state takes place at higher energies and accounts for the structured blue emission observed in solution. Emission from the lowest-energy 3MLCT state occurs in the green region and explains the structureless broad band observed in solid films.

Mechanism of Ir(ppy)2(N^N)+ (N^N = 2-Phenyl-1H-imidazo[4,5-f][1,10]phenanthroline) Sensor for F−, CF3COOH, and CH3COO−: Density Functional Theory and Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory Studies

The geometries, electronic structures, and spectroscopic properties of Ir(ppy)2(N--N)(+) (1) (N--N = 2-phenyl-1H-imidazo[4,5-f][1,10]phenanthroline, ppy = 2-phenylpyridine), Ir(ppy)2(N--N)(+) x F(-) (2), Ir(ppy)2(N--N)(+) x CF3COOH (3/3a), and Ir(ppy)2(N--N)(+) x CH3COO(-) (4) were investigated theoretically. The ground and the excited state geometries of 1-4 were optimized at the B3LYP/LANL2DZ and UB3LYP/LANL2DZ levels, respectively. The optimized geometries agree well with the corresponding experimental results. The HOMOs of 1-4 and 3a are composed of pi(ppy) and d(Ir), and the LUMOs of 1, 2, 3a, and 4 are contributed by pi*(N--N), whereas the LUMO of 3 is composed of pi*(N--N) and pi*(CF3COOH). Under the time-dependent density functional theory level with polarized continuum model model, the absorption and phosphorescence in CH2Cl2 media were calculated on the basis of the optimized ground and excited state geometries, respectively. The lowest-lying absorptions of 1 (412 nm) and 3/3a (409/419 nm) have MLCT/LLCT transition characters, and those of 2 (448 nm) and 4 (427 nm) are contributed by ILCT character. The calculated lowest-energy triplet excited states responsible for phosphorescence of 1 (519 nm) and 3/3a (661/702 nm) have mixing (3)MLCT/(3)LLCT/(3)ILCT characters, but those of 2 and 4 only have (3)ILCT but without (3)MLCT character, which is the reason for the no-emissive character of 2 and 4. Moreover, the phosphorescence character of 3 is hardly changed by different addition sites of CF3COOH group (3a). The calculated results also showed that complex 1 is more suitable for an F(-) sensor than for CF3COOH and CH3COO(-) sensors.

Theoretical Study of Pyrazolate-Bridged Dinuclear Platinum(II) Complexes: Interesting Potential Energy Curve of the Lowest Energy Triplet Excited State and Phosphorescence Spectra

Four kinds of 3,5-dialkylpyrazolate(R2pz)-bridged dinuclear platinum(II) complexes [Pt2(mu-R2pz)2(dfppy)2] (dfppy=2-(2,4-difluorophenyl)pyridine; R2pz=pyrazolate in 1, 3,5-dimethylpyrazolate in 2, 3-methyl-5- tert-butylpyrazolate in 3, and 3,5-bis(tert-butyl)pyrazolate in 4) were theoretically investigated by the DFT(B3PW91) method. The Stokes shift of their phosphorescence spectra was discussed on the basis of the potential energy curve (PEC) of the lowest energy triplet excited state (T1). This PEC significantly depends on the bulkiness of substituents on pz. In 1 and 2, bearing small substituents on pz, one local minimum is present in the T1 state besides a global minimum. The local minimum geometry is similar to the S0-equilibrium one. The T1 state at this local minimum is characterized as the pi-pi* excited state in dfppy, where the dpi orbital of Pt participates in this excited state through an antibonding interaction with the pi orbital of dfppy; in other words, this triplet excited state is assigned as the mixture of the ligand-centered pi-pi* excited and metal-to-ligand charge transfer excited state ((3)LC/MLCT). The geometry of the T1-global minimum is considerably different from the S0-equilibrium one. The T1 state at the global minimum is characterized as the triplet metal-metal-to-ligand charge transfer ((3)MMLCT) excited state, which is formed by the one-electron excitation from the dsigma-dsigma antibonding orbital to the pi* orbital of dfppy. Because of the presence of the local minimum, the geometry change in the T1 state is suppressed in polystyrene at room temperature (RT) and frozen 2-methyltetrahydrofuran (2-MeTHF) at 77 K. As a result, the energy of phosphorescence is almost the same in these solvents. In fluid 2-MeTHF at RT, on the other hand, the geometry of the T1 state easily reaches the T1-global minimum. Because the T1-global minimum geometry is considerably different from the S0-equilibrium one, the phosphorescence occurs at considerably low energy. These are the reasons why the Stokes shift is very large in fluid 2-MeTHF but small in polystyrene and frozen 2-MeTHF. In 3 and 4, bearing bulky tert-butyl substituents on pz, only the T1-global minimum is present but the local minimum is not. The electronic structure of this T1-global minimum is assigned as the (3)MMLCT excited state like 1 and 2. Though frozen 2-MeTHF suppresses the geometry change of 3 and 4 in the T1 state, their geometries moderately change in polystyrene because of the absence of the T1-local minimum. As a result, the energy of phosphorescence is moderately lower in polystyrene than in frozen 2-MeTHF. The T1-global minimum geometry is much different from the S0-equilibrium one in 3 but moderately different in 4, which is interpreted in terms of the symmetries of these complexes and the steric repulsion between the tert-butyl group on pz and dfppy. Thus, the energy of phosphorescence of 3 is much lower in fluid 2-MeTHF than in frozen 2-MeTHF like 1 and 2 but that of 4 is moderately lower; in other words, the Stokes shift in fluid 2-MeTHF is small only in 4.
