Probing Faculty Perspectives and Experiences for Framework Development of an Online University- Industry-Government Collaboration Platform

University-industry-government (UIG) collaboration nurtures the innovation ecosystem that sustains competitiveness and drives national economic growth. In the Philippines, however, there is limited collaboration between the UIG, thus resulting in untapped opportunities. An integrated web-based collaboration platform for researcher profiles, tools, and resources in Philippine higher education institutions (HEIs) would help promote and strengthen UIG collaboration. In this light, this study conducted a baseline assessment to gain insights into the faculty members’ perceived motivations, current contexts, and challenges of UIG collaborations. These insights guided the development of a framework that would inform the development of an online collaboration platform. The survey was participated in by 111 faculty members from a university system. Analysis showed that respondents had a wide range of experiences in their collaboration, wherein there was an overall satisfaction rating of 3.99 on their collaboration. Findings revealed that building connections or networks and professional development were the main drivers for faculty members to engage in collaboration. On the other hand, communication- and coordination-related issues were among the top collaboration challenges. Also identified as concerns were the differences in perspectives and the low commitment levels of some collaborators. The respondents expressed the necessity for an integrated platform that can facilitate collaboration activities, including opportunity-matching aligned with their professional experience and research interests. Better project management and streamlining of administrative processes were also cited to further enhance the collaboration experience. These findings underscore the necessity for improvement in strategic planning, resource allocation, enhanced faculty support, and opportunity-matching aligned with faculty expertise that can facilitate more effective collaboration among stakeholders. This research has essential implications for the improvement of the collaboration and similarly could provide important inputs and salient features for the development of a UIG collaboration platform.

Motivational Strategies and Staff Engagement of Public Secondary School Teachers in Rivers State

This study investigated the relationship between motivational strategies and staff engagement of public secondary school teachers in Rivers State. The objective of the study was to examine the influence of motivational strategies and staff engagement of public secondary school teachers. The study adopted survey research design. The population of this study comprised of ten selected public secondary schools teachers in Rivers State. A total of 100 respondents were sampled for the study through a convenient sampling techniques. Based on the research questions, a research questionnaire was designed and one hundred (100) copies were distributed. Eighty nine copies of the distributed questionnaire were retrieved. These copies were analyzed and the hypotheses were tested using the Spearman Rank Correlation Statistical tools via SPSS Package version 22.0. The result revealed that there was a significant relationship between remuneration and staff engagement. Also, recognition significantly influence staff engagement. Based on the findings, it was concluded that unfavorable working atmosphere in terms of poor remuneration and recognition offered by public secondary schools instills low levels of commitment by the staff. The study therefore recommended that the public school owners should seek to improve its remuneration strategies to ensure that it becomes a basis for enhanced engagement among the employees.

Along with their commitment to their institutions, educators can also improve their commitment to the teaching job. In this commitment, it manifests itself in three dimensions. These are listed as the teacher's willingness and belief in making a difference, believing that he can teach his students something, and making efforts to teach. The higher the organizational commitment, the more employees will take care of their institutions, students and the field they work in. With this situation, the pleasure, motivation and satisfaction that employees will receive from the work they are working will be high Jun. Along with this, the quality of education will also increase, and the student's success will increase. Keeping the level of commitment of the educator high is an important criterion. On the contrary, the success of a student influenced by an educator with a low level of commitment will be low. It will be positive for people in managerial positions to take measures that will increase their loyalty and motivation towards their employees. The new generation that grows up with the influence of the quality education provided in the institution will be more successful. The outputs planned to be achieved in educational organizations are made by human power, not by machine. If managers in organizations do not give the necessary importance and support to employees, the efficiency and quality in the working environment decrease. Employees should be enthusiastic and excited in order to increase the quality and efficiency in institutions. Employees who are tired and angry with life will not be able to be productive towards the institution. It is known that managers who are more insensitive and often inadequate have difficulty understanding that their employees may also have some individual needs. The communication that will be established between the teacher and the manager in schools with a mutually healthy infrastructure will help the school administrator to communicate more easily with the teachers and manage the school Decently. Social-life cycle assessment of oil palm plantation smallholders in Bengkulu province, Indonesia

Smallholders are often seen as a weak point in the development of oil palm plantation production. The quality and yield of their production are considered low according to world market standards; the continuity of their production is irregular; and finally, improving the welfare of farmers is difficult to achieve. However, smallholder plantations have an important and strategic role in achieving sustainable development. This study aims to assess the social life cycle assessment of smallholder oil palm plantations in Bengkulu Province by involving stakeholders consisting of workers, local communities, farm owners, and value chain actors. A total of 600 respondents were selected using quota sampling and interviewed using a structured questionnaire. Data analysis was conducted using social-life cycle assessment, involving various social issues and relevant social indicators for each stakeholder. The findings in our research show that smallholder oil palm plantations still do not meet the minimum wage for workers, and the equipment used by workers is still very minimal in terms of security and safety guarantees. The price of palm oil continues to fluctuate, and plantation policies are constantly changing, making it difficult for oil palm owners to meet the standards and various rules that are set for managing oil palm plantations. In addition, oil palm plantations are no longer a guarantee for the fulfillment of food security conditions for household owners, workers, communities, and actors involved in the oil palm institutional chain. Our finding is that, surprisingly, there is a low level of commitment by smallholders and the government to sustainability in oil palm plantations. The Indonesian Sustainable Palm Oil and Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil as standards for sustainable oil palm plantations, as well as global standards for oil palm plantations to demonstrate environmentally friendly production processes, have not been able to compel smallholders to implement sustainable development in oil palm. Various policies formulated by the Indonesian government are perceived to have not addressed the core issues faced by small-scale farmers. Policies supporting small-scale farmers, particularly those related to increasing productivity, fostering and monitoring the environmental management of palm oil plantation activities, and ensuring ownership of plantation, are necessary for the achievement of sustainable smallholder palm oil plantation development.

Exploratory study on challenges associated with short-term employment in Ghana

Globally, the use of temporary workers is assuming an alarming proportion and is cutting across industries from manufacturing to services, construction workers, registered nurses, bankers and information technology expects. Industries using temporary workers has surge considerably due to increased global competition and the imperative management strategy to reduce business costs in order to stay competitive on a turbulent business environment. The study examined the effects of short-term employment on an organization. The researchers employed the convergent parallel mixed method approach in an attempt to describe, explain and interpret the challenges of short-term employment contract in Ghana. This involved the use of both qualitative and quantitative tools with a study population drawn from three organizations in Accra and having a sample size of 14 respondents for the quantitative and 7 participants for the qualitative study. Though exploratory in nature, certain patterns that relate to challenges of short-term employment emerged from the analysis that centered on emotional well-being, job opportunities, financial security, job security and a sense of belongingness. These factors include insufficient socialisation, incidence of injustice arising out of summarily dismissals, marginalisation from decision-making, prospects for permanent work, lower wages and tenure, lower tolerance for inequity, low levels of commitment and curbed motivation. It is plausible that chaotic Human Resource Practices are underway with this phenomenon of Short-Term Employees in Corporate Ghana.

Hardiness and Subjective Well-being of Siberian Schoolchildren Who Have Different Levels of Migration Attitudes: The Example of the Omsk Region

Due to the growing rates of migration of young people from the Siberian region to the west, it is becoming increasingly relevant to study the personal prerequisites for making a decision to change their place of residence. Schoolchildren as future graduates and applicants are one of the most mobile groups of population. Knowledge of the socio-psychological factors of their migration attitudes will enable the region to create optimal conditions for further education and work of young specialists, preventing their outflow. The purpose of this study is to analyze the level and structure of subjective well-being and hardiness of schoolchildren in the Omsk region who have different levels of migration attitudes. The authors describe the types of schoolchildren with different levels of migration attitudes from the standpoint of personal and demographic characteristics. They conducted a survey and testing using the following tools: the personal subjective well-being diagnostic technique (by R.M. Shamionov and T.V. Beskova); S. Muddy’s Hardiness Survey (adapted by D.A. Leontiev and E.I. Rasskazova); personal migration attitudes scale (by S.A. Kuznetsova); the author’s questionnaire. The study involved 461 students (females - 58.1%) of secondary schools in Omsk and the Omsk region (Mage =15.5; SD = 1.39). As a result, three types of schoolchildren with different level of migratory attitudes were identified. The desire for a settled life is demonstrated by the schoolchildren with relatively higher subjective well-being and hardiness, as well as a high level of challenge. The highest level of migration attitudes was found in the schoolchildren with a relatively lower level of subjective well-being and hardiness, as well as a low level of commitment. The schoolchildren with average migration attitudes are psychologically similar to those striving for migration, but they have a relatively lower existential-activity and social-normative well-being; in addition, their commitment is at an average level.

THE INFLUENCE OF THE EMPLOYMENT STATUS OF PUBLIC EMPLOYEES ON THEIR WORK EFFICIENCY, SATISFACTION AND PUBLIC ORGANIZATION PERFORMANCE IN ISRAEL

Since the 1980’s, there was a growing interest into the privatization of public sector in Israel, under the influence of New Public Management. The present study analysis the influence of the employment status of public employees in Israe, on their work efficiency, satisfaction and on their organization performance. Using a quantitative research approach, 11 hypotheses were tested on a sample of 550 public employees with different employment status in the local authority of Givat Shmuel Municipality in Israel. The results show that that there is a strong relationship Cramer's V = 0.441 and significant correlation between an efficient employee (including/excluding causes of absenteeism) and employees with the different status of the employment (P <0.05, 388.44 = (44) 2χ). Also, the results indicate that between an efficient employee, excluding the factor of absenteeism, and status of employment there is a strong relationship, but weaker than the employee efficiency when including the factor of absenteeism: Cramer's V = 0.394 (P <0.05, 309.73 = (56) 2χ). A positive correlation was found between employees’ quality of service and the local authority’s performance (rs=0.541, p<0.05). An important finding is that an employee who is satisfied with his job, despite the tension arising from the different employment status as well as a low level of commitment among the other contract workers, is a motivated employeewho will still contribute a higher level of performance of the public authority. Several recommendations for public managers are also formulated.

Shared musical activity and perceptions of relationship commitment

Sharing music with another person involves the potential for profound emotional connection, rhythmic synchronization and coordination, and the expression of shared social and political values (among other things). We explore whether experiences of shared musical activity are associated with perceptions of communication and positive outcomes in friendships and romantic relationships, using reports from one member of the dyad. Reports of musical activities in the relationship were associated with higher levels of commitment to the relationship, with those effects mediated by perceptions of interpersonal coordination and positive communication. Surprisingly, structured musical activities (e.g., actively playing music together) were associated with lower levels of commitment, both directly and via interpersonal coordination, positive communication, and shared social values. All findings persist when controlling for other forms of shared relationship activities, thus demonstrating effects that are unique to shared musical engagement. The findings are discussed in a framework of music’s potential relational power—the Shared Musical Activities in Relationships (SMAR) model.

From Best Friends to Silent Ends: Exploring the Concepts of Ghosting in Non-Romantic Relationships

Ghosting is a popular term in mass media that has continued to baffle many with its ambiguity as a dissolution strategy. Multiple studies in the past have explored ghosting within romantic relationships, examining how this dissolution strategy has impacted the two parties involved: the initiator (ghoster) and the non-initiator (ghostee). However, it has been stated that ghosting can exist outside of romantic relationships as it may also occur within friendships or even if the relationship is questionably nonexistent. The objectives of the paper seek to understand how ghosting happens within these non-romantic relationships, its effects on the initiators and non-initiators, and its possible differences when compared to romantic relationships. Semi-structured interviews were conducted through video communication platforms on thirty respondents ages 18-25 who have experienced ghosting or been ghosted by a friend. Through the use of descriptive phenomenological qualitative study, the results revealed that 1) ghosting in non-romantic relationships occurs on technology-mediated channels, 2) the initiators experienced post-dissolution feelings of regret, 3) the non-initiators experienced feelings of uncertainty, 4) ghosting a friend is more socially acceptable than ghosting a romantic partner, and, 5) ghosting is more frequent in non-romantic relationships due to the lower levels of commitment and expectations. Other recurring themes, such as the common reasons behind ghosting for the initiators and ghosting as a justifiable means of dissolving the relationship, were also found.

Exploring Barriers to Participation in Pediatric Rehabilitation: Voices of Children and Young People with Disabilities, Parents, and Professionals.

In order to develop suitable support for participation in pediatric rehabilitation, it is important to understand what barriers need to be bridged from the perspectives of both children and adults. The aim of this study was to explore barriers to participation in pediatric rehabilitation services, according to children and young people with disabilities, parents to children with disabilities, and professionals. Data was collected in individual interviews (n = 48) and focus groups (n = 8), which were analyzed with qualitative content analysis to extract barriers to participation. Identified barriers include three categories: (1) insufficient access (controlling adults, adult-centered healthcare); (2) insufficient trust (low level of trust in adults, low level of trust in children, low self-confidence in children); and (3) insufficient involvement (norms of non-participation, low level of commitment in children). The participant groups had divergent conceptions of where and how barriers originate, and for what situations child participation is appropriate. Adult-centered healthcare and parental presence were described as barriers by all participant groups. Understanding differences in the perceptions of barriers and their origins is crucial when striving to change norms of non-participation. The findings can inform the development of new support tools and participatory formats in pediatric rehabilitation.

Analysis of Sexual Inhibition and Satisfaction from a Gender Perspective among University Students.

University is characterized by a critical stage where students experience their sexuality, across a range of relationships. From these experiences, university students consolidate their personality and their sexual role. Factors such as age, sex, or traumatic experiences of violence or sexual abuse can affect their sexual role. The present study aims to analyze how the variables age, sex and having suffered abuse or violence may predict sexual satisfaction and inhibition. In addition, we analyze the mediating effect that sexual role plays on these relationships. For this purpose, Bem Sex Role Inventory (BSRI-12), Sociosexual Orientation Inventory (SOI-R), Inhibited Sexual Desire Test (ISD) and New Sexual Satisfaction Scale (NESS) were administered to 403 university students. The findings report that sex (β = −0.313), age (β = −0.116) and being a survivor of sexual assault (β = 0.413) are predictive of male role, but not from the female role. Also, people with more male features tend to have lower levels of commitment and inhibition than those who have more female ones.

Broken promises: a rights-based analysis of marginalised livelihoods and experiences of food insecurity in large-scale land investments in Tanzania

Proponents of large-scale land investments (LSLI) still promote them as a development opportunity, which can lead, among other benefits, to job creation and enhanced food security for local communities. However, there is increasing evidence that these investments often deprive affected communities of their access to land, with multiple negative impacts on livelihoods, food security and on the environment. This paper relies on empirical data to present an analysis of LSLI and food (in)security – crucially at the level of individuals in two villages in the Ruvuma region, Tanzania, over 10 years after the acquisition of village land within the Southern African Growth Corridor of Tanzania (SAGCOT). We introduce an innovative framework that permits an integration of a rights-based approach with the Sustainable Livelihoods Framework to explore smallholders’ livelihoods and experiences of food insecurity. Our paper demonstrates how this integration, along with attention we have given to the FAO’s PANTHER principles, adds the missing yet crucial dimension of accountability on the part of national governments as duty bearers. Our findings show that in the case of these two villages, the human rights principles of participation, accountability, transparency and empowerment are severely undermined, with women bearing the brunt in all these domains. This overall state of affairs is, we argue, due to inadequate monitoring and evaluation of LSLI processes themselves and low levels of commitment on the part of institutions in Tanzania to monitor the promises made by investors. This in turn demonstrates an accountability deficit on the part of duty-bearers within LSLIs, and limited capacity of affected community members to claim their rights. Individual food insecurity experience in the two communities correlates, among other characteristics, with lack of land ownership, employment and income-generating activities. The rights-based livelihoods framework applied in this study points to serious deficiencies in the LSLI model as presently endorsed in SAGCOT, and emphasises the fact that access to land in Tanzania is a precondition for the realisation of the right to adequate food and thus a critical requirement for achieving and maintaining food and nutrition security. We conclude by arguing that progressive coalitions within and beyond national states must devise policies and institutions that empower individuals and civil society actors to make demands on their governments to respect, protect and fulfil their obligations regarding the legally enforceable right to food.

Exploring the economic, social, and environmental dimensions of community-supported agriculture in Italy

The diffusion of community supported agriculture (CSA) in Italy is a very recent phenomenon. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the current status and the evolution of this reality, understanding the social, environmental, and economic benefits for CSA members and the local context. Based on access to CSA data and participant observation during a CSA meeting, a thematic network analysis was adopted to analyse a large piece of information spanning from social, economic, and environmental topics as well as existing relationships between different CSA. Later, we interviewed CSA representatives about CSA production structure and several issues concerning their sustainability, including the role played by CSA members; the economic self-sufficiency; the environmental impact associated with food production. Findings highlighted that in general, the CSA phenomenon in Italy meets sustainability goals, even with different levels of members' involvement, working conditions, economic viability, and environmental impact from a community to one another, with desirable further improvements along all dimensions for most of them. Social transformations in which consumers take the role of producers and consumers at the same time with increased responsibility have been observed. In this context, the members' degree of responsibility contributes to distinguishing CSA in its full sense from CSA initiatives somehow started as ethical purchasing groups, with lower levels of commitment by members, then trying to trigger a higher involvement. The lack of policy support is containing further CSA diffusion and consolidation: new mechanisms are necessary at least to figure out, recognise, and reward the mitigation of environmental impacts characterising local food production and distribution.

A cause for celebration! A psychographic typology of attendees at a benefit concert

Purpose This exploratory study aims to show that events can create awareness and facilitate behavioural change among attendees. Festivals and events can use the United Nations sustainable development goals as drivers of societal change and business growth. Unfortunately, the attendees to a benefit concert have not been investigated to date. This study fills this gap by segmenting attendees to a benefit concert aimed at eradicating poverty. Design/methodology/approach A quantitative destination-based survey was undertaken at the Mandela 100: Global Citizen Festival in Johannesburg, South Africa, in 2018. A simple random sampling method was used within a stratified sampling method, and 408 questionnaires were obtained. Findings Three psychographic segmentation variables were used: motives for attending the event (novelty, escape and socialization and cause advocating); behavioural intentions and change as a result of attending the event (cognition and awareness, loyalty-related behaviour, active engagement and travel-related behaviour); and global causes aimed at eradicating poverty that attendees regard as important to support (social, sustainability, fiscal, fundamental and elevated prosperity). The results revealed three distinct segments, proposing that an AID-typology applies to benefit concert attendees: advocates, inspirers and discoverers. Each group has either a high, moderate or low level of commitment towards the festival’s and other global causes. Practical implications Practical implications are suggested as guidelines to encourage advocacy and active involvement for global causes. Originality/value This study was conducted from a developing country’s perspective and contextualizes the role that events can play in advocating for specific causes and encouraging citizens to get involved.

The mediating effect of cognitive appraisal on the relationship between sleep habits and the stress response among Japanese female college students

BackgroundUndergraduate students tend to develop “evening-type” sleep patterns. Recent research has reported that evening-type and irregular sleep habits are related to physical and mental stress responses, particularly in female students. Although the connection between sleep habits and the stress response has been well documented, the mechanism behind this relationship is currently unknown. Using the transactional model as a framework and female students as our target population, we examined whether sleep habits predict the stress response through the mediation of cognitive appraisals of one’s own sleep habits.MethodsThree hundred twenty-one Japanese female college students participated in this study. Participants completed measures of their sleep habits (sleep patterns and sleep irregularity), cognitive appraisals of their sleep habits (including four subscales: commitment, appraisal of influence, appraisal of threat, and controllability), stress responses (depression and anxiety), and control factors. The reliability and validity of the scales used in this study, except for sleep pattern and sleep irregularity, were confirmed in previous studies.ResultsMultiple-mediation-model analysis indicated that commitment mediates the relationship between sleep pattern and anxiety. Meanwhile, cognitive appraisals, as a whole, were found to have a mediating effect on the relationship between sleep irregularity and depression.ConclusionsOur study revealed that cognitive appraisals mediated the relationship between sleep habits and the stress response. The findings also suggest that maintaining a low level of commitment might be effective for reducing anxiety, especially considering the difficulty associated with changing lifestyles. The findings of the present study should be useful for health education related to lifestyle.

Intimate Dynamics and Relationship Satisfaction among LGB Adolescents: The Role of Sexual Minority Oppression.

Adolescent lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) romantic partners face the challenge of developing satisfactory relationships while managing stressors associated with being members of a stigmatized minority group due to their sexual minority status. The aims of this study were to explore and describe relationship dynamics among LGB adolescents that are in committed same-sex relationships in Portugal, to assess levels of satisfaction with their relationships, and to assess whether LGB oppression was associated with the likelihood of anticipating and experiencing problems within the relationship. A sample of 182 self-identified LGB adolescents (mean age = 17.89 years; SD = 1.99), completed an online survey consisting of various sociodemographic measures, a relationship dynamics questionnaire, a self-assessment of relationship satisfaction, and an adapted version of the Gay and Lesbian Oppressive Situations Inventory. Results show that participants were highly satisfied with their relationships, except those who were non-monogamous and less committed to their relationships. Participants showed moderate levels of LGB oppression situations, and, as demonstrated by the hierarchical multiple regression analysis, age (being older), having lower levels of commitment, and being exposed to higher levels of exclusion, rejection, and separation were strong predictors of lower levels of relationship satisfaction.

Generation Y’s Perception of Servant Leadership and Job Satisfaction

Generation Y wants to know the reason for everything in their lives, they are curious and most importantly, their characteristic of questioning everything makes them stand out. At the same time, it is hard to influence their characteristic features such as their lack of social skills, little respect for authority, and low level of commitment to their employers when Generation X management tactics are used. The purpose of this study is to better understand Generation Y, to examine their relations with servant leadership practices, and to determine what effects they have on businesses. The field study was made at an established organized industrial zone (OIZ) dating back to 1963. This OIZ is built on an area bigger than 10 million m2 and is divided into 5 subzones. It is currently home to 53,500 employees, has a gross foreign trade volume of $7,200,000,000 and is located in the western Aegean Region of Turkey. The data for the study was collected from 248 participants and scales tested for validity and reliability in Turkish. A model was developed using the data and then it was tested using the confirmatory factor analysis method. The study used Structural Equation Model (SEM) to define the causal relationships between latent variables with a model in the analysis of the data and test its compliance. The result of the analysis reveals that dimensions of accountability and forgiveness from servant leadership practices have a statistically significant effect on personal success, whereas empowerment, accountability, and personal success dimensions have statistically significant effects on job satisfaction. Modesty dimension does not have a significant effect on the personal success and job satisfaction and the dimensions of accountability and forgiveness do not have a significant effect on job satisfaction. In addition, empowerment dimension does not have a meaningful effect on personal success. There is need for more studies to support the accuracy of the result for modesty dimension, since it seems like there is no effect on personal success and job satisfaction. This is a pioneer study since it is an empirical one looking at the application of the servant leadership theory on Generation Y employees.

Commitment as a buyer-supplier antecedent for supply chain sustainability

The South African automotive industry is an important sector that contributes substantially to the country's economy. The sustainability of local suppliers within South African automotive supply chains is under threat because of global pressures, especially competition from low-cost countries. Increased pressure leads to conflict between international buyers and local suppliers. The result is strained relationships, causing lower levels of commitment, often increasing risk and threatening the sustainability of local suppliers. The aim of this study was to determine whether commitment as an antecedent within supply chains exists and whether such a precursor has an effect on sustainability within South African automotive supply chains. The study found, through the application of a linear regression model, that commitment could potentially contribute to vital supply chain sustainability in South Africa. The results point automotive component suppliers towards investing in a relational governance strategy to enhance buyer commitment and thus contribute to business sustainability.
