The effects of ply clustering positions and orientations on multi‐directional composite laminates' low velocity impact resistance

AbstractIn this paper, nine different carbon fiber laminates containing clusters are designed using the ant colony ACO algorithm, which have similar equivalent bending stiffnesses and B‐matrices, with the differences being the fiber orientation of the clusters and the position of the clusters in the laminates. The dynamic mechanical characterization of laminates for low velocity impact (LVI) at three different energies was carried out by means of a falling weight impact experiment. The experimental results show that the main form of failure of the laminate is delamination failure at low energy impacts, and shear fracture becomes more and more obvious with the elevation of the impact energy, which was observed in detail by the stereo microscope and electron microscope. The damage area of the laminate and the force and displacement curves after 30 J energy impact were compared by x‐ray scanning to derive the effects of the angle of the ply cluster fibers and the different positions of the ply clusters in the laminate on the impact resistance of the laminate. In conclusion, when designing the laminate, consideration should be given to designing 45° clusters on the impacted side and 90° clusters in the middle layer of the laminate to obtain the best impact resistance.Highlights Designed 9 types of laminates with different laminate structures based on ACO algorithm. Different laminates have similar equivalent bending stiffnesses and the B matrix as close to 0 as possible. LVI tests at three energies were performed on 9 types of laminates. The effects of different orientations of the clusters and the position of the clusters in the laminate on the impact resistance of the laminate were investigated.

Research on the adaptability of STF-Kevlar to ambient temperature under low-velocity impact conditions

Composite fabric formed by combining shear thickening fluid (STF) with aramid fabric (Kevlar) exhibits heightened impact resistance, rendering it extensively utilized within the realm of energy absorption. Given that composite fabrics often encounter various low-velocity impact scenarios in daily use, such as object falls, this study conducts rheological property tests and low-velocity impact experiments at different ambient temperatures to unveil the correlation between the low-velocity impact resistance of STF-Kevlar and environmental temperature. Rheological tests indicated that as temperature decreased, shear thickening behavior became more prominent, resulting in higher viscosity. Low-velocity impact tests demonstrated that with increasing temperature, the capability to withstand low-velocity impact gradually diminished in both STF and neat Kevlar, whereas the anti-impact property of STF-Kevlar increased. At a temperature of 60 °C, the peak load experienced by STF-Kevlar during low-velocity impact reached 1627 N, marking a notable 300% increase compared to the 407 N observed for neat Kevlar. Under changing environmental temperatures, alterations in the low-velocity impact resistance of STF-Kevlar were not contingent upon STF's viscosity but rather correlated with inter-yarn friction. The elevated inter-yarn friction at low temperatures hindered yarn sliding, leading to a decrease in the impact resistance of STF-Kevlar.

Enhancing resistance to low-velocity impact of electrospun-manufactured interlayer-strengthened CFRP by using infrared thermography

This study investigates the effect of electrospun nylon nanofibres modification on the low-velocity impact resistance of carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) laminates. Integration of multiple excitation infrared thermography using advanced image processing techniques is used to characterize the damage as a function of impact energy. The results show an enhanced damage resistance for the modified specimens, which is also validated by force – displacement curves. The interlaminar cracks show a maximum reduction of 24.8%, while delaminated areas and defect depths experience reductions of up to 28.7% and 24.3%, respectively. Interestingly, thermal diffusivity is introduced to identify the damage shape successfully. Finally, a correlation study is conducted, and a novel damage prediction model based on thermal diffusivity is proposed for further quantitative analysis.

Low-velocity impact responses of UHMWPE fiber/epoxy laminates with plasma treatment and polypyrrole grafting

The physical–chemical method with plasma treatment and polypyrrole grafting was used to improve the low velocity impact resistance of the ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) fiber/epoxy laminates. The experimental impact force–time curves and impact force-central displacement curves were recorded. The microscopic void distribution of impact region was quantitatively counted by high-resolution X-ray micro-computed tomography (μCT). Then the residual compressive strengths for the laminates after low velocity impact were explored. Experimental results showed that the impact resistance and residual strength of the laminates treated by the combined plasma treatment and polypyrrole grafting were significantly improved by comparing with the plasma treatment alone, and the void fraction also reduced remarkably. In addition, the impact resistance with single physical plasma treatment method was more affected by the mixture ratio of nitrogen and oxygen.

An analytical study on low velocity impact resistance behaviors of general bio‐inspired helicoidal composite plates

AbstractThrough evolutionary processes, helicoidal structures have been proven to exhibit exceptional load‐carrying capacity and impact resistance performance. To date, extensive experimental and numerical studies have been carried out on their impact behaviors, while few relevant analytical studies have been reported even though it is urgently needed for the preliminary assessment of structure design and optimization. In this work, based on the first shear deformation theory (FSDT) and the improved linearized Hertzian contact method, an analytical model for low velocity impact (LVI) performances of helicoidal laminates with arbitrary layups is developed. Therein, the post‐impact damage is taken into account according to continuum damage mechanics (CDM). Comparisons of load‐carrying capacity and energy‐absorbed performance between the proposed model prediction and the existing experimental data\numerical results have been made for verification. Besides, LVI behaviors of conventional laminates with unidirectional distribution andcross‐ply arrangement are discussed. Moreover, the role of rotation angle, impact velocity and the plate dimension on helicoidal laminates' LVI performances are analyzed quantitatively. There is evidence that helical layouts are better able to absorb energy and delay the in‐plane damage.Highlights The LVI responses of bio‐inspired single‐helicoidal (SH) and double‐helicoidal (DH) composite laminate are studied. An effective model to predict the LVI responses considered the post‐impact damage is developed. A comparison of the LVI performance of single‐helicoidal structures with various lay‐up schemes is carried out. DH structure has better low velocity impact resistance than SH structure when the rotation angle shares the same.

A comparative study on the low velocity impact behavior of UD, woven, and hybrid UD/woven FRP composite laminates

This study is aimed at comparing the response and damage of unidirectional (UD), woven fabric (WF) and hybrid UD/WF fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) laminates subjected to low velocity impact. The unidirectional tape and/or woven fabric (plain weave) carbon/epoxy prepregs are laminated and hot-pressed to produce UD, WF and sandwich-like hybrid UD/WF specimens. Impact responses of specimens are determined through low velocity impact (LVI) tests with impact energies of 10 J, 17 J and 25 J. After the LVI tests, the damage of specimens is characterized and analyzed using a combination of visual inspection, ultrasonic phased-array inspection, micro-computed tomography (CT) inspection, cross-sectional microscopic observation, and thermal de-ply test. Also, the LVI damage mechanisms of the three types of specimens are quantitatively compared by using the inter fiber crack volume ratio, total delamination area and fiber fracture length. It is concluded that the fiber architecture plays an important role in determining low velocity impact behavior of composite laminates. Especially, for the sandwich-like hybrid UD/WF laminates whose surface is a WF layer and the core is a UD layer, the WF layer on the surface plays an important role in reducing matrix cracking, delamination and fiber fracture, thus improving its LVI resistance.

Low-velocity impact-resistance of aramid fiber three-dimensional woven textile-reinforced thermoplastic-epoxy composites

The development of impact-resistant composite materials for protective applications such as helmet and body armor has attracted considerable attention. In this study, a novel aramid fiber-woven thermoplastic-epoxy composite was developed. Furthermore, three types of woven textiles, namely three-dimensional (3D) orthogonal-woven (3DOW), 3D angle-interlock woven (3DAIW), and two-dimensional plain-woven (2DPW) textiles, were used as reinforcement structures. To study the effect of the woven structure, impact energy, and damage repairment on impact-resistance performance of these composites, low-velocity drop-weight impact tests with various impact scenarios, such as single-impact, repeated-impact, as well as multiple-impact with hot-press damage repairment, were conducted. The results revealed that the woven structure exhibited an obvious effect on the composite impact-resistance performance and failure modes when subjected to specific impact scenarios. For the single-impact scenario, especially under high impact energy levels (10 and 20 J), the 3DOW structure exhibited superior impact-resistance performance as well as damage tolerance, followed by 3DAIW and 2DPW structures. Furthermore, 3DOW achieved superior impact-resistance to the other two structures for the 10-J repeated-impact scenario. The 3DAIW structure, in which debonding or delamination as well as severe resin cracks dominated, achieved superior impact-resistance to multiple impacts with damage repairment.

Metal-faced sandwich composite panels: A review

This review paper discusses the challenges in improving the mechanical and structural performance of metal-faced sandwich composite panels while reducing weight and cost. It focuses on the core and facesheet structural trends of metal-faced sandwich panels, highlighting innovative design concepts and mechanical performance with respect to failure modes. The paper categorizes recent core geometries used in metal-faced sandwich structures into three types: cellular foam cores, two-dimensional periodic cores, and three-dimensional periodic cores, each with unique characteristics and advantages. The performance of metal sandwich panels with different core structures in response to various mechanical tests is also summarized, including high and low-velocity impact, flexural, and blast and fire resistance. The review emphasizes that the core geometry, facesheet thickness, and core-face interfacial bonding of sandwich composites play a critical role in determining their structural performance and potential applications. Overall, this review paper provides valuable insights into the challenges of improving the mechanical and structural performance of metal-faced sandwich composite panels and highlights the importance of innovative design concepts for achieving optimal performance.

Edge-on impact behaviors of helicoidal fiber arrangement of composite laminates

To improve the low-velocity edge-on impact resistance of composite laminates, a helicoidal fiber arrangement of composite laminates (HFACLs) emulated from the micro-structure of the dactyl club is proposed. A finite element method with the progressive intralaminar and interlaminar damage model is adopted for verifications and investigations. Based on the verified model, the failure behaviors and reinforcement mechanisms of the HFACLs subjected to edge-on impact load are extensively revealed. To explore the effect of the rate of variation of helix angle, three types of helicoidal configurations with different derivatives are designed, including helicoidal-Sinusoidal (HS), helicoidal-Linear (HL), and helicoidal-Exponential (HE). From the predicted results, the HFACLs have a higher resistance load and shallower penetration depth. The maximum increase in resistance load and reduction in penetration depth can reach 50.66% and 26.37%, respectively. The laminate with a slight helix angle (HS laminate) variation rate has better edge-on impact resistance. In addition, the effects of impactor ellipticity and impact kinetic energy on edge-on impact response are studied. This study deepened an understanding of the edge-on impact failure mechanisms of the composite laminates and provided a design guideline for the edge-on impact-resistant design of composite laminates.

Impact resistance of composite to aluminum single lap joints reinforced with graphene doped nylon 6.6 nanofibers

In this study, the low velocity impact resistance of pure and modified epoxy adhesives for single lap joints between aluminum and carbon epoxy composites was investigated. Epoxy resin was used as the adhesive, and pure epoxy resin was modified by adding graphene-doped nylon 6.6 nanofibers (1%, 3% and 5% by weight) and pure nylon 6.6 nanofibers produced by electrospinning. These nanofibers are reinforced to aluminum-composite single lap joints as a second interface according to ASTM D1002-10 standard. Thus, single lap joints were prepared using 5 different adhesives. To create the impact effect, some joints were subjected to impact at a low velocity (1.04 m/s). Then, all impacted and non-impacted samples were subjected to single lap shear testing at room temperature and constant load to determine the impact resistance. While the non-impact lap shear strength of the pure epoxy adhesive samples was 6.81 MPa, the non-impact shear strength of the samples using pure nanofiber reinforced epoxy adhesive increased by 71.3% to 11.67 MPa compared to the pure epoxy adhesive. When comparing the post-impact failure loads, it was determined that the addition of graphene increases the impact resistance. Furthermore, adhesive surfaces were examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) for damage analysis after the tensile tests and toughening mechanisms such as bridging, adhesive crack formation, nanofibers breakage was determined in epoxy adhesives reinforced nanofiber with graphene in different proportions by weight. In addition, the glass transition temperature, melting temperature, thermal decomposition temperature and mass loss of epoxy resin, and graphene doped/undoped N6.6 nanofiber-reinforced epoxy adhesives were analyzed by Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA) and Differential Thermal Analysis (DTA) and it was determined that the addition of 3% GNP to N6.6 nanofiber reinforcement increased the thermal stability by 12.4%, the addition of 1% GNP to N6.6 nanofiber reinforcement increased the thermal resistance (glass transition temperature) by 34.9% compared pure epoxy.

Low-velocity impact response and compression behaviour after the impact of 3D-printed CCFR self-sensing honeycomb structures

Continuous-carbon-fibre-reinforced (CCFR) honeycomb structures with self-sensing abilities were fabricated by three-dimensional (3D) printing. Pure polylactic acid (PLA) honeycombs of the same size were also fabricated for comparison. Low-velocity impact (LVI) tests and compression after impact (CAI) tests were conducted. Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) were employed to investigate the corresponding damage mechanisms. The LVI test results showed that the presence of continuous carbon fibre effectively inhibited the generation and propagation of the damage in the matrix during impact, which allowed the CCFR honeycomb structure to have better low-velocity impact resistance, especially for repeated impacts with small energies. In contrast to the PLA honeycomb, the CAI test results showed that the CCFR honeycomb still retained good specific compression strength and specific energy absorption properties even after experiencing impacts. Furthermore, the continuous carbon fibre integrated into the CCFR honeycomb could be used as a sensor element to realize the in-situ structural health monitoring during impact and compression. The 3D-printed CCFR honeycomb structure, investigated in this research, demonstrates remarkable mechanical performance and self-sensing capabilities both during LVI and CAI tests, which highlights the vast potential of 3D-printed CCFR honeycomb for diverse applications.

Low-velocity impact resistance of all composite cylindrical shell panels with a foam filled honeycomb core: Theoretical and experimental investigation

The low-velocity impact resistance of all composite cylindrical shell panels (CCSPs) with a foam filled honeycomb core (FFCHC) is studied experimentally and theoretically. Initially, a dynamical model of the FFCHC-CCSPs is proposed, with the equivalent material properties of the core being determined by combining the Hamilton equivalence theory and the Gibson theory. By using the virtual work principle and quasi-static method, together with the von Karman's theory and the high order shear deformation shell theory, the constitutive relationship related to each damage case is derived. Also, by considering the influence of collapse of the FFCHC, the failure criteria and damage modes are modified. The impact displacement, load and impact energy absorption are solved by using the elastoplastic contact principle and energy principle. Several numerical results from the literature are employed for preliminary validation of the model. Furthermore, the FFCHC-CCSP specimens with and without polyurethane foam are fabricated and the detailed measurements associated with different impact energies are performed to provide a solid validation of the present model as well as to evaluate the structural impact resistance. Finally, the influences of the thickness of FFCHC, wall thickness and side length of honeycomb cell and density of foam on the impact resistance of the FFCHC-CCSP structures are discussed, with some useful conclusions being refined for better impact suppression design and manufacture of such advanced shells.

Research and analysis on low-velocity impact of composite materials

Abstract In this article, the concept of low-velocity impact resistance in composite materials is presented. Three existing expressions (e.g., bilinear, parabola, and exponential) that show the relationship between the dent depth and impact energy of composite laminates subjected to low-velocity impact are presented. Because of some flaws in these expressions, new supposed functions between impact energy and impact dent have been established. By means of existing ASTM D 7136 tests and simulation analysis, the new expressions are verified, and the nature of dent formation in composite materials is well explained. The conclusion is reflected in the ending part.

Effect of core layer parameters on the mechanical properties of biomimetic foamed silicone rubber sandwich structures against low-velocity impact

In this paper, a red-eared slider turtle is used as a prototype for the bionic design of the foamed silicone rubber sandwich structure, and the effect of core layer parameters on the low-velocity impact resistance of the foamed silicone rubber sandwich structure is studied by the finite element method. A numerical model with porosity of the foamed silicone rubber intrinsic model and a three-dimensional Hashin fiber plate damage model were used to verify the validity of the model in comparison with the test. On this basis, finite element simulations were performed by varying the core layer density and thickness. The results show that from the perspective of energy absorption, the sandwich structure has better impact resistance with core density of 750 kg/m3∼850 kg/m3 and core thickness of 20 mm–25 mm; from the perspective of structural lightweight requirements, the sandwich structure is more in line with the structural lightweight requirements with core density of 550 kg/m3∼650 kg/m3 and core thickness of 5 mm–10 mm. Therefore, the adoption of suitable core density and thickness is of great significance to the engineering practice.

Low-Velocity Impact Resistance of Glass Laminate Aluminium Reinforced Epoxy (GLARE) Composite

This study intends to determine the behavior of glass laminate aluminum-reinforced epoxy (GLARE) and glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) composites under a low-velocity impact test. Experimental tests and numerical simulations are considered for this investigation. All samples are made by the hand lay-up method. Moreover, specimens are produced with a 7075-T6 aluminium sheet with a 0.5 mm thickness, resin 3001, and E-glass fiber. The drop weight test performs the low-velocity impact at 6.7 J and 10 J impact energy levels and the heights of 1.0 m and 1.5 m. Numerical simulation is also conducted by ANSYS software to compare the results obtained by the experimental tests. Generally, results show that maximum deflections of the GLARE samples are significantly lower as compared to GFRP ones by 87% and 83.5% for 1.0 m and 1.5 m drop heights, respectively. Experimental results demonstrate that although aluminum sheets prevent damage to the fibers in GFRP, delamination and fractures between layers are observed in GFRP samples. An appropriate agreement is also obtained between the FE results and experimental data.

Warp-knitted spacer fabric flexible composites with high stability and low-velocity impact resistance infused by flock-reinforced shear thickening gel

Flexible protective materials with suitable properties are necessary for personal low-velocity impact (LVI) protection. Flock-reinforced shear thickening gel (FRSTG) can absorb energy through its state transition, thereby showing great potential in applications for LVI protection. However, the unstable state of FRSTG with a slight flow behavior challenges its LVI-resistant evaluation and in-depth development in use. Herein, three-dimensional (3D) warp-knitted spacer fabric (WKSF) composites were obtained by infusing FRSTG in high proportions (≥75%). FRSTG was observed to be stably and randomly distributed in the spacer layer of the WKSF, and the desirable flexibility of the composites was confirmed. The LVI protection effect of FRSTG was better than that of shear thickening gel at the same composite ratio, and the composite with an 83% FRSTG proportion absorbed more than 80% of the impact energy. Besides, FRSTG dominated the composites, showing enhanced responsiveness to the impact with increased velocity. Accordingly, this study constructed stable and LVI-resistant 3D flexible composites with FRSTG as the main functional component, which provided new ideas for the development of wearable protective equipment.

Low-velocity impact resistance behaviors of bionic double-helicoidal composite laminates

To improve the low-velocity impact resistance of composite laminates, a bionic double-helicoidal composite laminate (BDHCL) emulated from the micro-structure of coelacanth scales is proposed. The micro-structure is a double helicoidal Bouligand structure in which two adjacent collagen layers are arranged into an orthogonal bilayer and then rotating at a small helix angle. Three types of helicoidal configurations with different derivatives are designed, including sine rotation angle (SRA), linear rotation angle (LRA), and exponential rotation angle (ERA). The progressive intra-laminar and inter-laminar damage model is adopted to capture the failure behaviors of material. The impact behaviors of BDHCLs with several helix angles and included angles of the bilayer are studied. The results show that the double-helicoidal Bouligand structure has a higher resistance load and shallower penetration depth. The impact resistance of ERA laminate has the maximum improvement among the above three types of helix angle. A certain included angle of bilayer for the BDHCL will exhibit excellent impact resistance.

Research of composite resistance and design of the test matrix of low-speed impacts

In this paper, low-velocity impact resistance for composite laminates is introduced. The resistance function for the parameters of low-velocity impact performs 2-order Taylor’s series expansion. The orthogonal design and Latin hypercube design are presented and their strongpoint and shortcoming are also indicated. The low-velocity impact simulation model of the composite plate is established. The computed results are compared with the existing standard test from ASTM D7136M-05 and the simulation parameters of the model are modified. By calculating and analyzing typical honeycomb sandwich models with different configurations, the damage-area resistance is extracted from the results. The discrete and abstract variables are treated as continuous integer variables to fit the resistance formula of the composite material. Response surface approximation is used to form a hyper surface formula for parameters. The sensitivity analysis of it reveals that the two most influential factors, related to the resistance definition, which is convenient for the subsequent structural design of the composites. In contrast to the previously defined Taylor’s series expansion, the initial coefficients of the resistance formula are obtained. The resistance hyper surface function obtained from the simulation data is used to design the 7-point low-speed impact tests using Latin hypercube design, which employed to verify and validate the simulations, for purposes of saving on the cost of testing and improving the accuracy of analysis.

Nanosized Hexagonal Boron Nitride and Polyethylene Glycol-Filled Leathers for Applications Demanding High Thermal Insulation and Impact Resistance.

Leather is a niche material used for upholsteries, gloves, and garments due to its high durability, flexibility, and softness properties. The inclusion of nanoparticles in the leather matrix provides multifunctionality for high-performance applications. Herein, we synthesized hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) nanoparticles via a single-step hydrothermal synthesis and treated the leather after dispersing in polyethylene glycol (PEG) to yield h-BN/PEG-treated leathers. Atomic force microscopy and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy analysis ascertained the particle size of 30-50 nm for as-synthesized h-BN nanoparticles. h-BN nanoparticles along with PEG were successfully incorporated into the leather matrix, and this was confirmed by surface and morphological studies using field emission scanning electron microscopy/energy-dispersive X-ray analysis and Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy. Leathers treated with h-BN/PEG were studied for insulation against heat and cold, and the results displayed improved thermal insulation properties compared to the control leathers. The dynamic mechanical analysis of control and treated leathers demonstrated higher storage modulus, loss modulus, and tan δ values for h-BN/PEG-treated leathers, signifying an increased energy absorption and dissipation potential, which was further ascertained by the low-velocity drop-weight impact resistance test. Thus, the results of this study open up new prospects for h-BN/PEG-treated leathers in strategic applications demanding high thermal insulation and impact resistance properties.
