The ALMaQUEST Survey. XII. Dense Molecular Gas as Traced by HCN and HCO+ in Green Valley Galaxies

Abstract We present Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) observations of two dense gas tracers, HCN (1−0) and HCO+ (1-0) for three galaxies in the green valley and two galaxies on the star-forming main sequence with comparable molecular gas fractions as traced by the CO (1−0) emissions, selected from the ALMaQUEST survey. We investigate whether the deficit of molecular gas star formation efficiency (SFEmol) that leads to the low specific star formation rate (sSFR) in these green valley galaxies is due to a lack of dense gas (characterized by the dense gas fraction f dense) or the low star formation efficiency of dense gas (SFEdense). We find that SFEmol as traced by the CO emissions, when considering both star-forming and retired spaxels together, is tightly correlated with SFEdense and depends only weakly on f dense. The sSFR on kiloparsec scales is primarily driven by SFEmol and SFEdense, followed by the dependence on f mol, and is least correlated with f dense or the dense-gas-to-stellar mass ratio (R dense). When compared with other works in the literature, we find that our green valley sample shows lower global SFEmol and lower SFEdense while exhibiting similar dense gas fractions when compared to star-forming and starburst galaxies. We conclude that the star formation of the three green valley galaxies with a normal abundance of molecular gas is suppressed, mainly due to the reduced SFEdense rather than the lack of dense gas.

MIDIS: JWST NIRCam and MIRI Unveil the Stellar Population Properties of Lyα Emitters and Lyman-break Galaxies at z ≃ 3–7

We study the stellar population properties of 182 spectroscopically confirmed (MUSE/VLT) Lyα emitters (LAEs) and 450 photometrically selected Lyman-break galaxies (LBGs) at z = 2.8–6.7 in the Hubble Extreme Deep Field. Leveraging the combined power of Hubble Space Telescope and JWST NIRCam and MIRI observations, we analyze their rest-frame UV-through-near-IR spectral energy distributions, with MIRI playing a crucial role in robustly assessing the LAEs’ stellar masses and ages. Our LAEs are low-mass objects (log10(M⋆/M⊙)≃7.5) with little or no dust extinction (E(B − V) ≃ 0.1) and a blue UV continuum slope (β ≃ −2.2). While 75% of our LAEs are young (<100 Myr), the remaining 25% have significantly older stellar populations (≥100 Myr). These old LAEs are statistically more massive, less extinct, and have lower specific star formation rate than young LAEs. Besides, they populate the plane of M ⋆ versus star formation rate along the main sequence of star-forming galaxies, while young LAEs populate the starburst region. The comparison between the LAEs’ properties and those of a stellar-mass-matched sample of LBGs shows no statistical difference between these objects, except for the LBGs’ redder UV continuum slope and marginally larger E(B − V) values. Interestingly, 48% of the LBGs have ages <10 Myr and are classified as starbursts, but lack detectable Lyα emission. This is likely due to H i resonant scattering and/or dust-selective extinction. Overall, we find that JWST observations are crucial in determining the properties of LAEs and shedding light on their comparison with LBGs.

EPOCHS IX. When cosmic dawn breaks: evidence for evolved stellar populations in 7 &amp;lt; z &amp;lt; 12 galaxies from PEARLS GTO and public NIRCam imaging

ABSTRACT The presence of evolved stars in high-redshift galaxies can place valuable indirect constraints on the onset of star formation in the Universe. Thus, we use PEARLS GTO (Prime Extragalactic Areas for Reionization and Lensing Science Guaranteed Time Observations) and public NIRCam (Near Infrared Camera) photometric data to search for Balmer-break candidate galaxies at 7 &amp;lt; z &amp;lt; 12. We find that our Balmer-break candidates at z ∼ 10.5 tend to be older (115 Myr), have lower inferred [O iii] + Hβ equivalent widths (120 Å), have lower specific star formation rates (6 Gyr−1) and redder UV slopes (β = −1.8) than our control sample of galaxies. However, these trends all become less strong at z ∼ 8, where the F444W filter now probes the strong rest-frame optical emission lines, thus providing additional constraints on the current star formation activity of these galaxies. Indeed, the bursty nature of epoch of reionization galaxies can lead to a disconnect between their current spectral energy distribution (SED) profiles and their more extended star formation histories. We discuss how strong emission lines, the cumulative effect of weak emission lines, dusty continua, and active galactic nuclei can all contribute to the photometric excess seen in the rest-frame optical, thus mimicking the signature of a Balmer break. Additional medium-band imaging will thus be essential to more robustly identify Balmer-break galaxies. However, the Balmer break alone cannot serve as a definitive proxy for the stellar age of galaxies, being complexly dependent on the star formation history. Ultimately, deep Near Infrared Spectrograph (NIRSpec) continuum spectroscopy and Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) imaging will provide the strongest indirect constraints on the formation era of the first galaxies in the Universe, thereby revealing when cosmic dawn breaks.

High dust content of a quiescent galaxy at z ∼ 2 revealed by deep ALMA observation

ABSTRACT We report the detection of cold dust in an apparently quiescent massive galaxy (log (M⋆/M⊙) ≈ 11) at z ∼ 2 (G4). The source is identified as a serendipitous 2 mm continuum source in a deep ALMA observation within the field of Q2343-BX610, a z = 2.21 massive star-forming disc galaxy. Available multiband photometry of G4 suggests redshift of z ∼ 2 and a low specific star formation rate (sSFR), log (SFR/M⋆)[yr−1] ≈ −10.2, corresponding to ≈1.2 dex below the z = 2 main sequence (MS). G4 appears to be a peculiar dust-rich quiescent galaxy for its stellar mass (log (Mdust/M⋆) = −2.71 ± 0.26), with its estimated mass-weighted age (∼1–2 Gyr). We compile z ≳ 1 quiescent galaxies in the literature and discuss their age–ΔMS and log (Mdust/M⋆)–age relations to investigate passive evolution and dust depletion scale. A long dust depletion time and its morphology suggest morphological quenching along with less efficient feedback that could have acted on G4. The estimated dust yield for G4 further supports this idea, requiring efficient survival of dust and/or grain growth, and rejuvenation (or additional accretion). Follow-up observations probing the stellar light and cold dust peak are necessary to understand the implication of these findings in the broader context of galaxy evolutionary studies and quenching in the early universe.

New technique to select recent fast-quenching galaxies at z ~ 2 using the optical colours

ABSTRACT Many massive quiescent galaxies have been discovered at z &amp;gt; 2 thanks to multiwavelength deep and wide surveys; however, substantial deep near-infrared spectroscopic observations are needed to constrain their star formation histories statistically. Here, we present a new technique to select quiescent galaxies with a short quenching time-scale (≤0.1 Gyr) at z ∼ 2 photometrically. We focus on a spectral break at ∼1600 Å that appears for such fast-quenching galaxies ∼1 Gyr after quenching when early A-type stars go out, but late A-type stars still live. This spectral break at z ∼ 2 is similar to a Lyman break at z ∼ 4. We construct a set of colour criteria for z ∼ 2 fast-quenching galaxies on g − r versus r − i and i − J versus J − H or $\rm {\it i}-[3.6]$ versus $\rm [3.6]-[4.5]$ colour diagrams, which are available with the existing and/or future wide imaging surveys, by simulating various model galaxy spectra and test their robustnesses using the COSMOS2020 catalogue. Galaxies with photometric and/or spectroscopic redshifts z ∼ 2 and low specific star formation rates are successfully selected using these colours. The number density of these fast-quenching galaxy candidates at z ∼ 2 suggests that massive galaxies not so far above the star formation main sequence at z = 3–4 should be their progenitors.

Characterizing CO Emitters in the SSA22-AzTEC26 Field

We report the physical characterization of four CO emitters detected near the bright submillimeter galaxy (SMG) SSA22-AzTEC26. We analyze the data from Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array band 3, 4, and 7 observations of the SSA22-AzTEC26 field. In addition to the targeted SMG, we detect four line emitters with signal-to-noise ratio >5.2 in the cube smoothed with a 300 km s−1 FWHM Gaussian filter. All four sources have NIR counterparts within 1″. We perform UV-to-FIR spectral energy distribution modeling to derive the photometric redshifts and physical properties. Based on the photometric redshifts, we reveal that two of them are CO(2–1) at redshifts of 1.113 and 1.146 and one is CO(3–2) at z = 2.124. The three sources are massive galaxies with a stellar mass ≳1010.5 M ⊙, but have different levels of star formation. Two lie within the scatter of the main sequence (MS) of star-forming galaxies at z ∼ 1–2, and the most massive galaxy lies significantly below the MS. However, all three sources have a gas fraction within the scatter of the MS scaling relation. This shows that a blind CO line search can detect massive galaxies with low specific star formation rates that still host large gas reservoirs and that it also complements targeted surveys, suggesting later gas acquisition and the need for other mechanisms in addition to gas consumption to suppress star formation.

Calibration of hybrid resolved star formation rate recipes based on PHANGS–MUSE Hα and Hβ maps

Mapping star-formation rates (SFR) within galaxies is key to unveiling their assembly and evolution. Calibrations exist for computing the SFR from a combination of ultraviolet and infrared bands for galaxies as integrated systems, but their applicability to sub-galactic (kiloparsec) scales remains largely untested. We used integral field spectroscopy of 19 nearby (D &lt; 20 Mpc) galaxies obtained by PHANGS–MUSE to derive accurate Balmer decrements (Hα/Hβ) and attenuation-corrected Hα maps. We combined this information with mid-infrared maps from WISE at 22 μm and ultraviolet maps from GALEX in the far-UV band to derive SFR surface densities in nearby galaxies on resolved (kiloparsec) scales. Using the Hα attenuation-corrected SFR as a reference, we find that hybrid recipes from the literature overestimate the SFR in regions of low SFR surface density, low specific star-formation rate (sSFR), low attenuation, and old stellar ages. We attribute these trends to heating of the dust by old stellar populations (IR cirrus). We calibrated this effect by proposing functional forms for the coefficients in front of the IR term that depend on band ratios sensitive to the sSFR. These recipes return SFR estimates that agree with those in the literature at high sSFR (log(sSFR/yr−1) &gt; − 9.9). Moreover, they lead to negligible bias and &lt; 0.16 dex scatter when compared to our reference attenuation-corrected SFR from Hα. These calibrations prove reliable as a function of physical scale. In particular, they agree within 10% with the attenuation corrections computed from the Balmer decrement on 100 pc scales. Despite small quantitative differences, our calibrations are also applicable to integrated galaxy scales probed by the MaNGA survey, but with a larger scatter (up to 0.22 dex). Observations with JWST open up the possibility to calibrate these relations in nearby galaxies with cloud-scale (∼100 pc) resolution mid-IR imaging.

The Contribution of Evolved Stars to Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon Heating and Implications for Estimating Star Formation Rates

Emission from polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) is a promising tool for estimating star formation rate (SFR) in galaxies, but the origin of its sources of excitation, which include not only young but possibly also old stars, remains uncertain. We analyze Spitzer mid-infrared mapping-mode spectroscopic observations of the nuclear and extranuclear regions of 33 nearby galaxies to study the contribution of evolved stars to PAH emission. In combination with photometric measurements derived from ultraviolet, Hα, and infrared images, the spatially resolved spectral decomposition enables us to characterize the PAH emission, SFR, and stellar mass of the sample galaxies on subkiloparsec scales. We demonstrate that the traditional empirical correlation between PAH luminosity and SFR has a secondary dependence on specific SFR, or, equivalently, stellar mass. Ultraviolet-faint regions with lower specific SFRs and hence a greater fraction of evolved stars emit stronger PAH emission at fixed SFR than ultraviolet-bright regions. We reformulate the PAH-based SFR estimator by explicitly introducing stellar mass as a second parameter to account for the contribution of evolved stars to PAH excitation. The influence of evolved stars can explain the sublinear correlation between PAH emission and SFR, and it can partly account for the PAH deficit in dwarf galaxies and low-metallicity environments.

Reconstructing orbits of galaxies in extreme regions (ROGER) III: Galaxy evolution patterns in projected phase space around massive X-ray clusters

ABSTRACT We use the roger code by de los Rios et al. to classify galaxies around a sample of X-ray clusters into five classes according to their positions in the projected phase space diagram: cluster galaxies, backsplash galaxies, recent infallers, infalling galaxies, and interlopers. To understand the effects of the cluster environment to the evolution of galaxies, we compare across the five classes: stellar mass, specific star formation rate, size, and morphology. Following the guidelines of Coenda et al., a separate analysis is carried out for red and blue galaxies. For red galaxies, cluster galaxies differ from the other classes, having a suppressed specific star formation rate, smaller sizes, and are more likely to be classified as ellipticals. Differences are smaller between the other classes, however backsplash galaxies have significantly lower specific star formation rates than early or recent infalling galaxies. For blue galaxies, we find evidence that recent infallers are smaller than infalling galaxies and interlopers, while the latter two are comparable in size. Our results provide evidence that, after a single passage, the cluster environment can diminish a galaxy’s star formation, modify its morphology, and can also reduce in size blue galaxies. We find evidence that quenching occurs faster than morphological transformation from spirals to ellipticals for all classes. While quenching is evidently enhanced as soon as galaxies get into clusters, significant morphological transformations require galaxies to experience the action of the physical mechanisms of the cluster for longer time-scales.

Central concentration of asymmetric features in post-starburst galaxies at z ∼ 0.8

ABSTRACT We present morphological analyses of post-starburst galaxies (PSBs) at 0.7 &amp;lt; z &amp;lt; 0.9 in the COSMOS field. We fitted ultraviolet to mid-infrared multiband photometry of objects with i &amp;lt; 24 from COSMOS2020 catalogue with population synthesis models assuming non-parametric, piece-wise constant function of star formation history, and selected 94 of those galaxies that have high specific star formation rates (SSFRs) of more than 10−9.5 yr−1 in 321–1000 Myr before observation and an order-of-magnitude lower SSFRs within recent 321 Myr. We devised a new non-parametric morphological index which quantifies concentration of asymmetric features, CA, and measured it as well as concentration C and asymmetry A on the Hubble Space Telescope/Advanced Camera for Surveys IF814W-band images. While relatively high C and low A values of PSBs are similar to those of quiescent galaxies rather than star-forming galaxies, we found that PSBs show systematically higher values of CA than both quiescent and star-forming galaxies; 36 per cent of PSBs have log CA &amp;gt; 0.8, while only 16 per cent (2 per cent) of quiescent (star-forming) galaxies show such high CA values. Those PSBs with high CA have relatively low overall asymmetry of A ∼ 0.1, but show remarkable asymmetric features near the centre. The fraction of those PSBs with high CA increases with increasing SSFR in 321–1000 Myr before observation rather than residual ongoing star formation. These results and their high surface stellar mass densities suggest that those galaxies experienced a nuclear starburst in the recent past, and processes that cause such starbursts could lead to the quenching of star formation through rapid gas consumption, supernova/active galactic nucleus feedback, and so on.

Red Dragon: a redshift-evolving Gaussian mixture model for galaxies

ABSTRACT Precision-era optical cluster cosmology calls for a precise definition of the red sequence (RS), consistent across redshift. To this end, we present the Red Dragon algorithm: an error-corrected multivariate Gaussian mixture model (GMM). Simultaneous use of multiple colours and smooth evolution of GMM parameters result in a continuous RS and blue cloud (BC) characterization across redshift, avoiding the discontinuities of red fraction inherent in swapping RS selection colours. Based on a mid-redshift spectroscopic sample of SDSS galaxies, an RS defined by Red Dragon selects quiescent galaxies (low specific star formation rate) with a balanced accuracy of over $90{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$. This approach to galaxy population assignment gives more natural separations between RS and BC galaxies than hard cuts in colour–magnitude or colour–colour spaces. What Drives Galaxies from the Main Sequence to the Green Valley?

AbstractGreen valley galaxies (by selection) exhibit lower specific star formation rates and are thought to be in the transition from the active star-forming phase to the quiescent state. Physical mechanisms responsible for the depleted star formation in green valley galaxies, however, are still under debate. Using the ALMA-MaNGA Quenching and STar formation (ALMaQUEST) CO observations, we study the so-called ‘resolved star formation scaling relations’, which describe relationships among surface densities of star formation rate, stellar mass, and molecular gas mass. By comparing the kpc-scale scaling relations between the main sequence and green valley galaxies, we are able to quantify if the deficit of star formation in green valley galaxies is driven by depleted molecular gas or inefficient star formation. And finally, we present our recent ALMA dense gas (HCN and HCO+) observations for a set of selected ALMaQUEST galaxies to discuss whether the green valley galaxies lack dense molecular gas or not.

The imprint of cosmic web quenching on central galaxies

ABSTRACT We investigate how cosmic web environment impacts the average properties of central galaxies in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). We analyse how the average specific star formation rate, stellar age, metallicity, and element abundance ratio [α/Fe] of SDSS central galaxies depend on distance from the cosmic web nodes, walls, and filaments identified by the Discrete Persistent Structures Extractor (DisPerSE). In our approach we control for galaxy stellar mass and local density differentiated between field and group environment. Our results confirm the known trend whereby galaxies exhibit lower specific star formation rates with decreasing distance to the cosmic web features. Furthermore, we show that centrals closer to either nodes, walls, or filaments are on average older, metal richer, and α-enhanced compared to their equal mass counterparts at larger distances. The identified property gradients appear to have the same amplitude for central galaxies in the field as for those in groups. Our findings support a cosmic web quenching that stems from nurture effects, such as ram pressure stripping and strangulation, and/or nature effects linked to the intrinsic properties of the cosmic web.

The Effect of the Morphological Quenching Mechanism on Star Formation Activity at 0.5 &lt; z &lt; 1.5 in 3D-HST/CANDELS

Abstract Several mechanisms for the transformation of blue star-forming to red quiescent galaxies have been proposed, and the green valley (GV) galaxies amid them are widely accepted in a transitional phase. Thus, comparing the morphological and environmental differences of the GV galaxies with early-type disks (ETDs; bulge dominated and having a disk) and late-type disks (LTDs; disk dominated) is suitable for distinguishing the corresponding quenching mechanisms. A large population of massive (M * ≥ 1010 M ⊙) GV galaxies at 0.5 ≤ z ≤ 1.5 in 3D-HST/CANDELS is selected using extinction-corrected (U–V)rest color. After eliminating any possible active galactic nucleus candidates and considering the “mass-matching,” we finally construct two comparable samples of GV galaxies with either 319 ETD or 319 LTD galaxies. Compared to the LTD galaxies, it is found that the ETD galaxies possess higher concentration index and lower specific star formation rate, whereas the environments surrounding them are not different. This may suggest that the morphological quenching may dominate the star formation activity of massive GV galaxies rather than the environmental quenching. To quantify the correlation between the galaxy morphology and the star formation activity, we define a dimensionless morphology quenching efficiency Q mor and find that Q mor is not sensitive to the stellar mass and redshift. When the difference between the average star formation rate of ETD and LTD galaxies is about 0.7 M ⊙ yr−1, the probability of Q mor ≳ 0.2 is higher than 90%, which implies that the degree of morphological quenching in GV galaxies might be described by Q mor ≳ 0.2.

ALMA Measures Rapidly Depleted Molecular Gas Reservoirs in Massive Quiescent Galaxies at z ∼ 1.5

Abstract We present Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) CO(2–1) spectroscopy of six massive (log10 / &gt; 11.3) quiescent galaxies at z ∼ 1.5. These data represent the largest sample using CO emission to trace molecular gas in quiescent galaxies above z &gt; 1, achieving an average 3σ sensitivity of ∼ 1010 . We detect one galaxy at 4σ significance and place upper limits on the molecular gas reservoirs of the other five, finding molecular gas mass fractions (3σ upper limits). This is 1–2 orders of magnitude lower than coeval star-forming galaxies at similar stellar mass, and comparable to galaxies at z = 0 with similarly low specific star formation rate (sSFR). This indicates that their molecular gas reservoirs were rapidly and efficiently used up or destroyed, and that gas fractions are uniformly low (&lt;6%) despite the structural diversity of our sample. The implied rapid depletion time of molecular gas ( &lt; 0.6 Gyr) disagrees with extrapolations of empirical scaling relations to low sSFR. We find that our low gas fractions are instead in agreement with predictions from both the recent simba cosmological simulation, and from analytical “bathtub” models for gas accretion onto galaxies in massive dark matter halos (log at z = 0). Such high mass halos reach a critical mass of log by z ∼ 4 that halt the accretion of baryons early in the universe. Our data are consistent with a simple picture where galaxies truncate accretion and then consume the existing gas at or faster than typical main-sequence rates. Alternatively, we cannot rule out that these galaxies reside in lower mass halos, and low gas fractions may instead reflect either stronger feedback, or more efficient gas consumption.

Discovery of Two Einstein Crosses from Massive Post-blue Nugget Galaxies at z &gt; 1 in KiDS*

Abstract We report the discovery of two Einstein Crosses (ECs) in the footprint of the Kilo-Degree Survey (KiDS): KIDS J232940-340922 and KIDS J122456+005048. Using integral field spectroscopy from the Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer at the Very Large Telescope, we confirm their gravitational-lens nature. In both cases, the four spectra of the source clearly show a prominence of absorption features, hence revealing an evolved stellar population with little star formation. The lensing model of the two systems, assuming a singular isothermal ellipsoid (SIE) with external shear, shows that: (1) the two crosses, located at redshift z = 0.38 and 0.24, have Einstein radius R E = 5.2 kpc and 5.4 kpc, respectively; (2) their projected dark matter fractions inside the half effective radius are 0.60 and 0.56 (Chabrier initial mass function); (3) the sources are ultra-compact galaxies, R e ∼ 0.9 kpc (at redshift, z s = 1.59) and R e ∼ 0.5 kpc (z s = 1.10), respectively. These results are unaffected by the underlying mass density assumption. Due to size, blue color, and absorption-dominated spectra, corroborated by low specific star formation rates derived from optical–near-infrared spectral energy distribution fitting, we argue that the two lensed sources in these ECs are blue nuggets migrating toward their quenching phase.

Constraining delay time distribution of binary neutron star mergers from host galaxy properties

ABSTRACT Gravitational wave (GW) observatories are discovering binary neutron star mergers (BNSMs), and in at least one event we were able to track it down in multiple wavelengths of light, which allowed us to identify the host galaxy. Using a catalogue of local galaxies with inferred star formation histories and adopting a BNSM delay time distribution (DTD) model, we investigate the dependence of BNSM rate on an array of galaxy properties. Compared to the intrinsic property distribution of galaxies, that of BNSM host galaxies is skewed towards galaxies with redder colour, lower specific star formation rate, higher luminosity, and higher stellar mass, reflecting the tendency of higher BNSM rates in more massive galaxies. We introduce a formalism to efficiently make forecast on using host galaxy properties to constrain DTD models. We find comparable constraints from the dependence of BNSM occurrence distribution on galaxy colour, specific star formation rate, and stellar mass, all better than those from dependence on r-band luminosity. The tightest constraints come from using individual star formation histories of host galaxies, which reduces the uncertainties on DTD parameters by a factor of three or more. Substantially different DTD models can be differentiated with about 10 BNSM detections. To constrain DTD parameters at 10 per cent precision level requires about one hundred detections, achievable with GW observations on a decade time-scale.

The star formation properties of the observed and simulated AGN Universe: BAT versus EAGLE

ABSTRACT In this paper, we present data from 72 low-redshift, hard X-ray selected active galactic nucleus (AGN) taken from the Swift–BAT 58 month catalogue. We utilize spectral energy distribution fitting to the optical to infrared photometry in order to estimate host galaxy properties. We compare this observational sample to a volume- and flux-matched sample of AGN from the Evolution and Assembly of GaLaxies and their Environments (EAGLE) hydrodynamical simulations in order to verify how accurately the simulations can reproduce observed AGN host galaxy properties. After correcting for the known +0.2 dex offset in the SFRs between EAGLE and previous observations, we find agreement in the star formation rate (SFR) and X-ray luminosity distributions; however, we find that the stellar masses in EAGLE are 0.2–0.4 dex greater than the observational sample, which consequently leads to lower specific star formation rates (sSFRs). We compare these results to our previous study at high redshift, finding agreement in both the observations and simulations, whereby the widths of sSFR distributions are similar (∼0.4–0.6 dex) and the median of the SFR distributions lie below the star-forming main sequence by ∼0.3–0.5 dex across all samples. We also use EAGLE to select a sample of AGN host galaxies at high and low redshift and follow their characteristic evolution from z = 8 to z = 0. We find similar behaviour between these two samples, whereby star formation is quenched when the black hole goes through its phase of most rapid growth. Utilizing EAGLE we find that 23 per cent of AGN selected at z ∼ 0 are also AGN at high redshift, and that their host galaxies are among the most massive objects in the simulation. Overall, we find EAGLE reproduces the observations well, with some minor inconsistencies (∼0.2 dex in stellar masses and ∼0.4 dex in sSFRs).

Massive low-surface-brightness galaxies in the eagle simulation

ABSTRACT We investigate the formation and properties of low surface brightness galaxies (LSBGs) with M* &amp;gt; 109.5 M⊙ in the eagle hydrodynamical cosmological simulation. Galaxy surface brightness depends on a combination of stellar mass surface density and mass-to-light ratio (M/L), such that low surface brightness is strongly correlated with both galaxy angular momentum (low surface density) and low specific star formation rate (high M/L). This drives most of the other observed correlations between surface brightness and galaxy properties, such as the fact that most LSBGs have low metallicity. We find that LSBGs are more isolated than high-surface-brightness galaxies (HSBGs), in agreement with observations, but that this trend is driven entirely by the fact that LSBGs are unlikely to be close-in satellites. The majority of LSBGs are consistent with a formation scenario in which the galaxies with the highest angular momentum are those that formed most of their stars recently from a gas reservoir co-rotating with a high-spin dark matter halo. However, the most extended LSBG discs in EAGLE, which are comparable in size to observed giant LSBGs, are built up via mergers. These galaxies are found to inhabit dark matter haloes with a higher spin in their inner regions (&amp;lt;0.1r200c), even when excluding the effects of baryonic physics by considering matching haloes from a dark-matter-only simulation with identical initial conditions.

BreakBRD Galaxies. I. Global Properties of Spiral Galaxies with Central Star Formation in Red Disks

Abstract We introduce a collection of primarily centrally star-forming galaxies that are selected by disk color to have truncated disk star formation. We show that common explanations for centrally concentrated star formation—low stellar mass, bars, and high-density environments—do not universally apply to this sample. To gain insight into our sample, we compare these galaxies to a parent sample of strongly star-forming galaxies and to a parent sample of galaxies with low specific star formation rates. We find that in star formation and color space from ultraviolet to the infrared these galaxies either fall between the two samples or agree more closely with galaxies with high specific star formation rates. Their morphological characteristics also lie between high and low specific star formation rate galaxies, although their Petrosian radii agree well with that of the low specific star formation rate parent sample. We discuss whether this sample is likely to be quenching or showing an unusual star formation distribution while continuing to grow through star formation. Future detailed studies of these galaxies will give us insights into how the local conditions within a galaxy balance environmental influence to govern the distribution of star formation. In this first paper in a series, we describe the global properties that identify this sample as separate from more average spiral galaxies, and we identify paths forward to explore the underlying causes of their differences.
