Difficulties with emotion regulation are commonly experienced by people with learning disabilities (LDs). This paper provides an overview and evaluation of an eight-week group aimed at teaching skills to support eight adults with LDs to effectively manage their feelings. The group was based on Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) principles and was adapted in order to take account of the needs of people with LDs. After attending the group, clients reported lower levels of psychological distress, and reported making progress towards achieving their goals of managing feelings more effectively. Feedback from clients and carers indicated that the group had been a valuable and enjoyable intervention. We conclude that relatively short-term, group-based interventions based on DBT principles may be a valuable resource to offer to adults with LDs who are struggling to manage their emotions.
