Some Aspects of Patriotic Education of Future Teachers

The importance of patriotic education of future teachers in the education system of Kyrgyzstan is considered. For centuries, the love of the people for their homeland, the protection of their interests and unity, and respect for the heritage of their ancestors have formed the basis of patriotic feeling. In most post-Soviet countries, patriotism has become an important part of the political discourse in order to form a national and civic identity. The formation of the Kyrgyz nation - a single civic nation uniting representatives of various ethnic groups living in Kyrgyzstan, should be really strengthened in their consciousness through feelings of love for their country, pride in it, and patriotism. Formation of interest in love for the Kyrgyz land, knowledge of its ancient history is one of the main tasks of modern education. Patriotism is an essential structural and integral part of the national idea, culture and science. Fostering a sense of patriotism is very important for the future of Kyrgyzstan. Patriotic education of future teachers helps to convey national values to the younger generation. Education of patriotic youth is a living, responsible process.

Translational Neuroscience Contributes to Understanding Neurodevelopmental Outcomes of Dostoyevsky's "Brothers Karamazov" With Treatment Implications.

Dostoyevsky's novels raise profound ethical, moral, philosophical and theological issues and, as a result, both he and his novels serve as fertile subjects of scholarly inquiry across a variety of academic disciplines. In particular, major characters in "The Brothers Karamazov" lend themselves to classical psychodynamic formulations, such as the influence of adverse childhood experiences on adult social and occupational outcomes, which in the case of Dmitry, the eldest son of Fyodor Pavlovich Karamazov, are considered in exquisitely fine detail. Prosecutor and defense attorney provide differing interpretations of how early traumas, largely due to paternal neglect and abuse, affected Dmitry's adult outcome in the climactic trial over his alleged patricide. The novel also captures an extreme, and perhaps fanciful, description of an Oedipal rivalry between Dmitry and his father for the affection of a love interest leading to tragic and unpredictable consequences for both. The novel has been dissected by scholars across a variety of diverse and seemingly unrelated disciplines and continues to serve as a springboard for collaborative discussion. Re-reading the novel led the authors to wonder if translational developments in clinical neuroscience could further understanding of poor developmental trajectories of the novel's characters, as well as offer therapeutic recommendations for promoting more favorable occupational and social outcomes. Advances in basic neuroscience have been translated into actionable individualized, interdisciplinary, multimodal treatment plans leading to improved functional outcomes for children like Dmitry, Ivan, and Smerdyakov. Translational neuroscience enriches understanding of neurodevelopmental outcomes of characters in Dostoyevsky's novel "The Brothers Karamazov," especially in the context of genetic risk and in utero environmental insults.

Deconstructing Desire: Criticism of Western Romantic Narratives in Mitski's "Your Best American Girl" Music Video

Mitski Miyawaki, a Japanese American indie-rock artist professionally known as Mitski, wrote her 2016 song, “Your Best American Girl,” from the perspective of a woman who is unable to have a relationship with her love interest due to their different racial and cultural backgrounds. The accompanying music video engages with the song’s social message while adding nuance and complexity to it. Many of the lyrics portray Mitski’s feelings of isolation as an Asian American woman, especially through their employment of Japanese cultural symbols, while the music video uses parody, camera angles, and Americana iconography to further illustrate Mitski’s experiences of isolation. This essay analyzes the subtle ways in which “Your Best American Girl” subverts Asian stereotypes and destabilizes white patriarchal structures that are perpetrated by popular media, particularly through white centrality in the indie-rock genre. Comparison of “Your Best American Girl” to Lana Del Rey’s “Born to Die” music video reveals how “Your Best American Girl” uses parody techniques to criticize this white centrality. Further, its references to PJ Harvey allows Mitski to occupy a similar position of musical authenticity and command respect. Through lyrical, musical, and visual storytelling, “Your Best American Girl” chronicles Mitski’s journey towards self-acceptance, while critiquing the pervasive whiteness in romantic narratives.

FICTIONALIZING HISTORY: VIDYASAGAR NARZARY’S MALOTINI DAO MWINA

Vidyasagar Narzary’s Malotini Dao Mwina occupies a critical position in Bodo literature as one of the first novels to blend history and fiction, focusing on the cultural and political events of the 15th century. It depicts the confrontation between the Kachari and Ahom kingdoms, centered around a love story between King Kumuri and Maloti, his love interest. The novel’s title, which includes the Myna bird (Mwina), serves as a symbolic representation of the interplay between personal and collective histories. While remaining faithful to historical truths, Narzary’s work reclaims and reimagines Bodo heritage, filling the gaps left by historical records and preserving oral traditions. The novel’s rich narrative draws from myths, geography, and Bodo cultural customs, intertwining them with the broader political landscape. Through imaginative storytelling, Narzary not only celebrates the essence of Bodo identity but also highlights the politics of representation. His work contributes significantly to literary studies by emphasizing the resilience, traditions, and agency of the Bodo people, transforming history into a powerful medium of cultural preservation and literary expression.

Dog Eat Dog: Staging Female Rivalry in David Johnston’s Translation of Lope’s The Dog in the Manger

Abstract: Staging female rivalry for today’s audiences presents a multiplicity of problems in producing Golden Age Spanish plays. In Lope de Vega’s El perro del hortelano, the lady Diana, Countess of Belflor, eventually wins out against her rival, her own lady-in-waiting, Marcela. A further complication arises since the love interest is the Countess’s low-born secretary, Teodoro. Stage action from Marcela’s perspective informs the main plot, the love game between Diana and Teodoro. Marcela questions: “When can honor and love ever meet” (112), a line recalling Donald Larson’s notion of feminine vergüenza that involves the Countess’s social status. I discuss David Johnston’s translation as an effort to unravel comedic enredos with contemporary language, along with the performance at the Shakespeare Theatre Company in Washington, DC, in 2009. The bonds of matrimony serve to bring order out of delightful theatrical chaos that in the hands of this translator becomes witty comedic action.

Forbidden Love in Arundhati Roy’s The God of Small Things

While shared beliefs, standards, and norms can often influence our perception of what is morally right or wrong, it is necessary to question the origin of certain cultural ideals. Arundhati Roy’s The God of Small Things (1997) questions the importance of adhering to the status quo as the novel explores the theme of forbidden love. The use of heterotopic spaces in the book produces variations of the real world where characters can explore their forbidden love interests and challenge societal constraints. These heterotopias are environments that are characteristically 'other' because they represent ideas which are intense, incompatible, or transforming (Foucault 4). Central characters in Arundhati Roy's The God of Small Things use these spaces to interrogate the complexity of forbidden love and disrupt the status quo.

Buying the Tokyo Dream! Working Women’s Metropolitan Romance in Japanese Television Drama

ABSTRACT Building on existing scholarship on the representation of female singlehood in Japanese television dramas, this article examines depictions of female romantic and professional development in two scripted streaming media series: Tōkyō joshi zukan and Tōkyō rabu sutōrī 2020. Both series’ female leads prioritise personal development and self-realisation over their love interests and end with singlehood (loosely defined as the status of being outside officially registered marriage). I examine the relationships between these women’s financial capacity and their attitudes toward love and marriage, followed by a comparison of these idealistic representations with the dilemmas facing working women in reality. As the ‘Tokyo’ in their titles suggests, the geographic location of the capital plays a central role in both dramas. Their characters’ negotiation of gender and power dynamics is inextricable from the socio-spatial attributes of Tokyo, framing the striving single female professional as an essentially urban character.

Return Migration Experiences Portrayed in K-pop Literature: <i>Somewhere Only We Know</i> and <i>Comeback: A K-pop Novel</i>

Korean American youth often turn to Korean popular culture, such as K-pop, to claim their cultural space in the U.S., where they are marginalized. These ethnic media influence some to return to their ancestral homeland in search of racial belonging and ethnic identity. Nevertheless, literature and media rarely address the complexities and difficulties of such return migration. Hence, in this study, I utilize two K-pop young adult books—published in the United States, not Korea—to analyze the experiences of return migration and identity negotiation of return migrants in Korea through Korean American K-pop stars and their Korean American love interests.

Whose Voice? Speaking, Singing, and Listening in Wilhelm Meisters Lehrjahre and Cervantes’s Don Quijote

ABSTRACT Wilhelm Meisters Lehrjahre appeared in 1795–96, two decades after the publication of Bertuch’s translation of Cervantes’ Don Quijote and three years before Tieck’s seminal translation of the same. Both novels famously feature errant protagonists with complex lives and problematic love interests. This comparative paper offers a detailed exploration of the potential links. The initial focus is contextual, with a discussion of Goethe’s reception of Cervantes’s work and the critical responses of Goetheforschung to this meeting of great minds. The paper then explores parallels between the texts, building on the work of Barry Ife on Quijote in relation to the use of voice (especially song) and dissembling (ventriloquy) in the Lehrjahre.

Being “Rightly Known”: Otherness and the Ethics of Reading in Charlotte Brontë’s Villette

Abstract Villette (1853), Charlotte Brontë’s last novel, is famously riddled with ambiguity: its narrator-protagonist, Lucy Snowe, avoids disclosing details about her childhood, fails to reveal to readers the identity of characters she recognizes from her past, and refuses to confirm if her love interest, M. Paul, has died at sea. Believing Lucy’s ambiguous narrative style to be a tool she uses to train readers to better understand her, many critics have focused on trying to interpret Lucy’s silences and evasions “correctly,” thereby turning themselves into Lucy’s or Brontë’s “ideal” authorial readers. However, throughout her life, Lucy has resisted being read by people who assume they can fully know and fit her into their worldview. Unwilling to impose her views on others, Lucy’s autobiography encourages readers to make their own meaning without deciphering how she intends for it to be read. She maintains that she is ultimately unknowable to her readers, just as they are to her, and preserves, rather than erases, the distance between reader and author. By constructing an authorial reader who does not seek to think as Lucy does, Villette invites readers into an ethical relationship with Lucy in which otherness is respected and intimacy is possible despite differences.

‘It’s a love interest’ – Enthusiasts and regional industry cultures of practice

Non-firm actors have emerged in economic geography as significant in shaping regional industrial cultures and new industry pathways, though how knowledge and practice is shared with firm actors remains unclear. The case of enthusiasts or hobbyists is especially interesting when there are industry counterparts given the blurred lines between work and hobby. There has been limited discussion of such interactions, and how they might contribute to regional development or an industrial culture of problem solving. This paper explores this gap through a case study of beekeepers in Western Australia. It analyses the interview results from hobbyist and commercial operators to understand how practice is shared, the construction of group meaning and identity and how place-based problem solving occurs through a regional culture of exchange and mutual benefit. The findings point to the importance of informal non-firm actors in the development of regional industry culture of practice and entrepreneurship, and that supporting collaborations between enthusiasts and local business may produce broad industry and societal benefits.

Maqbool and Bollywood Conventions

Vishal Bharadwaj sets Maqbool (Kaleidoscope Productions, 2004), his adaptation of William Shakespeare's Macbeth, against the backdrop of Mumbai's underworld. Maqbool deftly blends the basic plot structure of Shakespeare's play with the increasingly popular genre of Bollywood gangland films. Bharadwaj's adaptation traces the rise and betrayal of Miya Maqbool (Macbeth), whose love interest, Nimmi, combines the ferocity of Lady Macbeth with the desperation and marginalization characteristic of female leads in Bollywood thrillers. Bharadwaj's film belongs to a long tradition of Shakespeare adaptations in India, both on stage and the silver screen. Echoes of Shakespearean dialogues in Bharadwaj's film co-exist with staple Bollywood song and dance sequences, creating a heady postcolonial mix.

Hollow people–called ghouls–faced a troubling dilemma: consume humans and live or risk starvation and the strong possibility that their feral instincts would lead them to uncontrollably rip loved ones to shreds. Fortunately, SynFlesh was developed (rather quickly) to satisfy the Hollowed cravings, and the world is mostly returning to normal, safely integrating ghouls into society. Finally freed from societal lockdown, four queer Hollow girlfriends road trip to a music festival in the secluded desert to let loose; unfortunately, an encounter with a cocky B-list celebrity sets off a series of mysterious events leaving a bloody trail to a missing ghoul friend. Meanwhile, attacks by an insatiable creature—far more monstrous than ghouls—slash the chances of any survivors, human or otherwise, escaping the desert. Fyre Festival meets zombie apocalypse in Cottingham's latest gore-filled excursion in which the social commentary bites just as hard as the flesh-eating monsters. Despite the heavy consequences of wrecking the environment, the world continues in the same self-serving dog-eat-dog fashion that led to this situation, and it's clear that even an apocalyptic event wouldn't eradicate societal problems like racism, homophobia, and privilege. Matters of the heart, too, coexist with the crisis, as the book follows Zoey and her bestie/long-time crush Celeste, a trans girl, and new potential love interest Cole. ISBN 9780593175231 $9.99 Reviewed from digital galleys R Gr. 4-6 When a questionable traffic stop lands Lawrence’s father in prison, his mother moves him and his siblings in with their strict Granny in rural North Carolina where he attends a predominantly white middle school. Lawrence’s most recent scrape with a classmate results in expulsion forcing Lawrence to finish seventh grade remotely, but Granny, playing the role of traditional straight-laced southern matriarch, insists that staying home all day would be counterproductive to his development, not to mention unbiblical. Thankfully, the rec center offers opportunities for newfound interests: chess and Twyla, a beautiful dark-skinned methodical thinker whose mastery of the game inspires Lawrence into making the right moves. Giles gives readers an honest story about growing up in a world that affords few breaks to Black youth. The clever use of chess as a way for elders to teach life skills works brilliantly here, and much like the game’s different pieces, each character is moving through the world with varied strengths and abilities. On the surface, Granny seems overly strict, but she ends up being the queen Lawrence needs, steady, capable, and ready to help in behind the scenes role in his success, and mom’s the rook, doggedly pushing forward to make sure Lawrence is protected and supported. There are more pieces in play with a love interest, a bully, and other life decisions, and Giles strategically moves them all to a satisfying conclusion. ‘Clothes (don’t) make the man’: Fashioning the phallus in Sabine Bernardi’s Romeos

German director Sabine Bernardi’s Romeos presents a progressive and more complete view of transgender experience than a previous generation of films on the subject. Skilfully avoiding outdated tropes in her representation of the female-to-male (FTM) trans man Lukas’s transition, the film instead places it in a cultural and sociopolitical context that shows him confronting ‘cultural cisgenderism’ and negotiating the medicalization of his ‘condition’ to obtain the mastectomy he wants. Romeos, however, does not posit surgical intervention as the central element in its protagonist’s transition but shows how gender identity and expression are conceived internally, independently of the individual’s embodiment. Thus, this article argues that the developing maleness and masculinity that Lukas exhibits demonstrates that there exists a significant difference between the penis and the phallus. Lukas is able to ‘fashion the phallus’ – what social psychologists have called a ‘cultural genital’ – with a combination of appearance (including his fashionable male attire), hormone therapy and a strict workout regime. Even though a male genital may not be present in a physical sense, the significance attributed to his cultural genital allows Lukas to express his psychic gender identity and to establish the trans man, in the words of one gender theorist, as ‘attractive, appealing, and gendered while simultaneously presenting a gender at odds with sex, a sense of self not derived from the body’. Still the discrepancy between his gender identity and his embodiment at times causes considerable problems for Lukas, especially when his love interest, the cisgender Fabio, accidentally finds out that Lukas is trans and questions his physical genital. That Lukas nonetheless manages to establish himself as a desiring subject capable of establishing a romantic relationship with Fabio and consummating it by having sex with him bespeaks the power of self-definition and the significant role that the cultural genital plays in this process.
