Imidazolium-based ionic liquids with increasing alkyl chain length of cations decrease the stability and fibrillation propensity of lysozyme

Imidazolium ionic liquids with longer alkyl side chains show a larger destabilization effect on lysozyme. Increased hydrophobicity of the IL increases its binding affinity and inhibits the fibril formation of lysozyme.

Effect of alkyl chain length in protic ionic liquids: an AIMD perspective

ABSTRACTIn this study we have explored, by means of ab initio molecular dynamics, a subset of three different protic ionic liquids (ILs). We present both structural and dynamical information of the liquid state of these compounds as revealed by accurate ab initio computations of the interactions. Our analysis figures out the presence of a strong hydrogen bond network in the bulk state, that is more stable in those ILs characterised by a longer alkyl side chain. Indeed it becomes more long-lasting passing from ethyl ammonium to butyl ammonium, owing to the hydrophobic effects stemming from alkyl chain contacts. Furthermore, the relative free energy landscape of the cation–anion interaction exhibits a progressively deeper well as the side chain of the cation gets longer. The hydrogen bond interaction, as already mentioned in previous works, leads to loss of degeneracy of the asymmetric stretching vibrations of the nitrate anions. The resulting frequency splitting between the two normal modes is about 90 cm−1.

The Cyclization of Alkyl Side Chains of Naphthalenes: The GC/Potential Energies/FTIR Approach

Gas chromatographic measurements of the retention times of alkyl naphthalenes on packed columns with polar and non-polar stationary phases have proven that the logarithm of the relative retention time increases bi-linearly (not linearly) with the number of carbon atoms in a molecule. This is caused by a strong inclination of alkyl side chains toward intramolecular cyclization. A FTIR spectral analysis has shown that longer alkyl side chains of alkyl naphthalenes are cyclized through an interaction between the terminal CH3 group and the aromatic ring. Conventional aromatic-aliphatic molecules thus become new molecules with quasi-alicyclic rings. This, however, alters the effect of non-covalent van der Waals attractive forces both inside and outside the molecules, which is reflected in an exponential increase of the retention times of alkyl naphthalenes with a side chain longer than propyl and in the bi-linearity of the logarithmic dependence of the relative retention times on the number of carbons in the molecule.

Effect of Alkyl Side Chain of Soluble Polyimide Orienting Layer on Liquid Crystal Alignment

The surface properties of soluble polyimide with alkyl side chain as alignment layer were studied by contact angle, pretilt angle and thermal property(Tg) measurements. The contact angle before rubbing was higher than after nibbing and lower glass transition temperature (Tg) were obtained for polyimides with longer alkyl side chain. The pretilt angle was affected by alkyl side chain length and glass transition temperature of polyimide.
