Divergent soil health responses to long-term inorganic and organic fertilization management on subtropical upland red soil in China

To optimize soil health, land use, and soil management decisions need to be guided by an understanding of the underlying soil health. Although widely used fertilizers guarantee crop production, they ultimately damage agricultural soil environmental quality and threaten the overall food chain safety. Thus, an integrative assessment considering both environmental safety and soil fertility is required for the sustainable development of long-term fertilization systems. In this study, we conducted a comprehensive assessment of soil health using 20 soil physical, chemical, and biological indicators and assessed them according to four heavy metals—copper, zinc, cadmium, and lead. This experiment was conducted in an area where there is an ongoing, 23-year-long fertilization experiment in a typical red soil region of southern China, including four treatments of common inorganic chemical fertilizer (CF), CF mixed with micronutrients (CF + T), CF mixed with pig manure (PM), and PM mixed with micronutrients (PM + T). To assess the soil fertility quality, we selected a minimum data set consisting of soil water-stable aggregates mean weight diameter, available phosphorus, total nitrogen, microbial biomass carbon, and dehydrogenase activity. The results revealed that soil fertility quality followed the order of PM + T ≈ PM > CF + T > CF. We also used a modified potential ecological risk index to assess the soil environmental quality. This approach considered the acid-soluble and exchangeable fraction of heavy metals as the bioavailability component. Both PM and PM + T treated soils were significantly contaminated by heavy metals, with particularly large amounts of Cd contamination. The soil health index escalated from CF, CF + T, PM to PM + T, which indicated that the use of pig manure allowed for more fertile soil relative to standard chemical fertilization. Moreover, applying additional micronutrients also had a significant influence on soil fertility. Therefore, our study revealed that long-term fertilization using organic pig manure was beneficial to overall soil fertility; however, these benefits were coupled with significant limitations regarding heavy metal contamination. Collectively, this study provides a better supporting method for soil health management and long-term fertilization strategies.

Rice developmental stages modulate rhizosphere bacteria and archaea co-occurrence and sensitivity to long-term inorganic fertilization in a West African Sahelian agro-ecosystem

BackgroundRhizosphere microbial communities are important components of the soil-plant continuum in paddy field ecosystems. These rhizosphere communities contribute to nutrient cycling and rice productivity. The use of fertilizers is a common agricultural practice in rice paddy fields. However, the long-term impact of the fertilizers usage on the rhizosphere microbial communities at different rice developmental stages remains poorly investigated. Here, we examined the effects of long-term (27 years) N and NPK-fertilization on bacterial and archaeal community inhabiting the rice rhizosphere at three developmental stages (tillering, panicle initiation and booting) in the Senegal River Delta.ResultsWe found that the effect of long-term inorganic fertilization on rhizosphere microbial communities varied with the rice developmental stage, and between microbial communities in their response to N and NPK-fertilization. The microbial communities inhabiting the rice rhizosphere at panicle initiation appear to be more sensitive to long-term inorganic fertilization than those at tillering and booting stages. However, the effect of developmental stage on microbial sensitivity to long-term inorganic fertilization was more pronounced for bacterial than archaeal community. Furthermore, our data reveal dynamics of bacteria and archaea co-occurrence patterns in the rice rhizosphere, with differentiated bacterial and archaeal pivotal roles in the microbial inter-kingdom networks across developmental stages.ConclusionsOur study brings new insights on rhizosphere bacteria and archaea co-occurrence and the long-term inorganic fertilization impact on these communities across developmental stages in field-grown rice. It would help in developing strategies for the successful manipulation of microbial communities to improve rice yields.

The role of long-term mineral and manure fertilization on P species accumulation and phosphate-solubilizing microorganisms in paddy red soils

Abstract. Understanding soil phosphorus (P) transformation and turnover under various fertilization managements is important for evaluating sustainable P fertility and potential bioavailability in agriculture managements. Thus, long-term fertilization experiments (∼ 38 years) with the application of different inorganic and organic fertilizers in paddy red soils were conducted to determine the effect of different fertilizer applications on P pool accumulation and microbial communities, especially for phosphate-solubilizing microorganisms (PSMs). Long-term inorganic P (IP) fertilization increased the concentrations of total P (TP) (∼ 479 mg kg−1), available P (AP) (∼ 417 mg kg−1) and inorganic P (∼ 18 mg kg−1), but manure fertilization accelerated the accumulation of organic P, especially for orthophosphate monoesters (e.g., myo-IHP, ∼ 12 mg kg−1). Long-term mineral fertilization decreased bacterial richness, evenness and complexation of bacterial networks. In contrast, long-term manure fertilization and rhizosphere accumulated more amounts of total carbon, total nitrogen, and organic carbon, as well as regulated the soil pH, thus improving the separation of bacterial communities. Furthermore, PSM compositions were greatly influenced by fertilization managements and rhizosphere. For example, inorganic P fertilization increased the abundance of Thiobacillus (i.e., the most abundant phosphate-solubilizing bacteria (PSB) in this study) and shifted the community structure of PSB. Correspondingly, the concentrations of inorganic and total P were the key factors for the variation of the PSB community structure. These findings are beneficial for understanding the variation of inorganic and organic P pools and the microbial community, especially for PSMs under long-term inorganic and/or organic fertilization.

Predatory protists play predominant roles in suppressing soil-borne fungal pathogens under organic fertilization regimes

Soil-borne fungal pathogens pose a major threat to global agricultural production and food security. Pathogen-suppressive bacteria and plant beneficial protists are important components of soil microbiomes and essential to plant health and performance, but it remains largely unknown regarding how agricultural management practices influence the relative importance of protists and bacteria in plant disease suppression. Here, we characterized soil microbiomes (including fungi, protists, and bacteria) in bulk and sorghum rhizosphere soils with various long-term inorganic and organic fertilization regimes, and linked the changes in fungal plant pathogens with the protistan and bacterial communities. We found that the relative abundances of fungal pathogens were significantly decreased by organic fertilization regimes, and there was a significant difference in the community composition of fungal pathogens between inorganic and organic fertilization regimes. Organic fertilization significantly enhanced predatory protists but reduced the proportions of protistan phototrophs. Co-occurrence network analysis revealed more intensive connections between fungal plant pathogens with protists, especially predatory protists, than with bacterial taxa, which was further supported by stronger associations between the community structure of fungal pathogens and predatory protists. We identified more protist consumer taxa than bacterial taxa as predictors of fungal plant pathogens, and structural equation modelling revealed a more important impact of protist consumers than bacteria on fungal pathogens. Altogether, we provide new evidence that the disease inhibitory effects of long-term organic fertilization regimes could be best explained by the potential predation pressure of protists. Our findings advance the mechanistic understanding of the role of predator-prey interactions in controlling fungal diseases, and have implications for novel biocontrol strategies to mitigate the consequences of fungal infections for plant performance.

Effects of organic fertilizer incorporation practices on crops yield, soil quality, and soil fauna feeding activity in the wheat-maize rotation system

The decline in soil quality is becoming a significant process of soil degradation. Optimizing organic fertilizer incorporation practices in cropland is essential to enhancing crop productivity and soil health. However, that requires a comprehensive understanding of crop yield and soil quality reaction across an application gradient of organic fertilizer. We investigated the effect of organic fertilizer incorporation practices on crop yield, soil quality, and fauna feeding activity from fluvo-aquic soils on wheat (Triticum aestivum)-maize (Zea mays) rotation field. The six treatments included were unfertilized N control (UC), traditional chemical fertilizer application (TF, 600 N kg ha−1 year−1), and recommended chemical fertilization (RF, 400 N kg ha−1 year−1) with no organic fertilizer application rate, low-level 15.0 (RFLO), medium-level 30.0 (RFMO), and high-level 45.0 t ha−1 year−1 (RFHO) application, respectively. The research findings show that the yield with organic fertilizer incorporation treatments increased 26.4%–44.6% for wheat and 12.5%–40.8% for maize compared to RF plots. The long-term organic fertilizer incorporation rate increased organic carbon from 54.7% to 110.6% versus UC plots and 27.9%–74.0% versus chemical fertilizer (TF and RF) treatments, and the total nitrogen content of soil increased from 41.8% to 59.2%, and 24.6%–39.2%. The long-term inorganic fertilizer combined with organic fertilizer incorporation practices significantly enhanced soil sucrose (30.1%–51.9%), urease (28.4%–38.3%), and β-1,4-glucosidase (34.6%–122.4%) activity. Still, nitrite reductase, polyphenol oxidase, and catalase significantly lower 27.3%–49.9%, 8.5%–26.3% and 23.3%–34.3% than single applications of inorganic N fertilizer groups. Meanwhile, the results showed that organic fertilizer incorporation practices improved soil fauna feeding activity by 35.2%–42.5%, and the excessive application of inorganic N fertilizer reduced the activity level of soil fauna.

How can fertilization regimes and durations shape earthworm gut microbiota in a long-term field experiment?

The positive roles of earthworms on soil functionality has been extensively documented. The capacity of the earthworm gut microbiota on decomposition and nutrient cycling under long-term fertilization in field conditions has rarely been studied. Here, we report the structural, taxonomic, and functional responses of Eisenia foetida and Pheretima guillelmi gut microbiota to different fertilization regimes and durations using 16S rRNA gene-based Illumina sequencing and high-throughput quantitative PCR techniques. Our results revealed that the core gut microbiota, especially the fermentative bacteria were mainly sourced from the soil, but strongly stimulated with species-specificity, potential benefits for the host and soil health. The functional compositions of gut microbiota were altered by fertilization with fertilization duration being more influential than fertilization regimes. Moreover, the combination of organic and inorganic fertilization with the longer duration resulted in a higher richness and connectivity in the gut microbiota, and also their functional potential related to carbon (C), nitrogen, and phosphorus cycling, particularly the labile C decomposition, denitrification, and phosphate mobilization. We also found that long-term inorganic fertilization increased the abundance of pathogenic bacteria in the P. guillelmi gut. This study demonstrates that understanding earthworm gut microbiota can provide insights into how agricultural practices can potentially alter soil ecosystem functions through the interactions between soil and earthworm gut microbiotas.

Potentially toxic trace element pollution in long-term fertilized agricultural soils in China: A meta-analysis

Fertilization results in potentially toxic trace element (PTTE) pollution in agricultural soils. However, it is unclear which factors determine the effect sizes of fertilization on PTTEs at the multiple spatial-temporal scale. This work synthesized 379 observations in 78 field sites (3–35 years) across China's main grain producing areas, and showed that long-term organic fertilization significantly enhanced total Cu, Zn and Cd by 25.7%, 18.9% and 66.6%, and soil available Cu, Zn and Cd by 60.5%, 155.3% and 83.6%, respectively; whereas long-term inorganic fertilization increased only available Cu, Zn and Cd by an average of 6.3%. Organic fertilizer (OF) type and application rate dominated the variation of PTTE concentrations, where approximately one-half of Cd pollution (42.6% of total Cd and 47% of available Cd) was observed. Furthermore, OFs containing Cd less than 1 mg kg−1 were recommended to be safely applied to agricultural soils. Soil type was main factor under long-term inorganic fertilization determining available PTTE variation, resulted in higher pollution risk in some soils such as Alfisols and Semi-hydromorphic soils, where we suggested the use of lower amounts of P fertilizers or the application of ones having small amounts of PTTEs. In short, long-term organic fertilization caused serious pollution of PTTEs especially Cd in Chinese croplands, and some strategies with a focus towards reducing the pollution risk must be developed, e.g., promoting straw return, forbidding Cd addition to feeds and feed additives, and improving carbon sequestration efficiency (CSE) of OFs and thus soil organic matter (SOM).

Long-term effects of liquid swine manure land surface application in an apple orchard field on soil bacterial community and heavy metal contents in apple (Malus pumila Mill.).

This study investigated the impact of liquid swine manure (LSM) land surface application in an apple orchard on soil health and copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn) in soil and apple. Three apple plots were selected, among which two for LSM application for 5 (AY5) and 11 (AY11) years with different application rates, a long-term inorganic fertilizer application plot as the control treatment (AY0). The soil and apple samples were collected for analysis of soil physicochemical properties, bacterial diversity and abundance, and the contents of Cu and Zn in soil and apple. Results showed that the LSM application significantly increased the concentration of soil nutrients with the highest in AY5, which has a high application rate of LSM. After 5 or 11 years applied, the content of total nitrogen (TN) in AY5 and AY11 increased by 125.2% and 96.7%, total phosphorus (TP) increased by 167.6% and 148.6%, and soil organic matter (SOM) increased by 180.7% and 120.6%, respectively. The AY5 treatment significantly lowered OTUs and decreased Shannon index trend with a negative correlation between soil organic matter and Shannon index. The six predominant bacterial phyla in different treatments were similar, but the LSM application significantly increased the abundance of Chloroflexi and Firmicutes. However, the abundance of Actinobacteria and Acidobacteria significantly decreased in AY5 as compared to control treatment, followed by a significant positive correlation between the abundance of Acidobacteria and soil pH. Besides, LSM application significantly increased the contents of soil Cu, Zn, and apple Zn. Overall, the results illustrated that appropriate application rate of LSM can effectively improve apple orchard soil quality and bacterial community structure, but it will increase the risk of heavy metal accumulation in soil and apples.

Effect of inorganic fertilizer application on soil microbial diversity in an oil palm plantation

Excessive fertilizer applications in oil palm plantations are conventionally done to increase the oil yield, but they result in high production cost and environmental pollution. There have been only separate reports on the effects of fertilizer application on soil physical, chemical characteristics, and microbial biodiversity. Therefore, this study was conducted to determine the correlation between soil characteristics and soil microbial biodiversity in oil palm plantation after long-term frequent chemical fertilizer application compared with secondary soil, using molecular methods of polymerase chain reaction denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (PCR-DGGE) and MiSeq. Secondary forest soil was chosen as the control. The results showed that after 25 years of fertilizer application, the total nitrogen and organic carbon contents decreased from low to very low scale, indicating soil infertility condition. Reduction of Firmicutes was related to suppression of soil borne diseases, and Bacteroidetes which is an indicator of soil health were both almost eliminated after 25 years of fertilizer application. In conclusion, long-term inorganic fertilizer application reduced the soil nitrogen, and organic carbon, altered beneficial microbes in the soil.

Impacts of long-term inorganic and organic fertilization on phosphorus adsorption and desorption characteristics in red paddies in southern China.

Soil phosphorus (P) adsorption and desorption occur in an important endogenous cycle linked with soil fertility problems and relevant to the environmental risk assessment of P. In our study, the effect of long-term inorganic and organic fertilization on P adsorption and desorption characteristics in relation to changes in soil properties was evaluated by selecting three long-term experimental sites in southern China. The selected treatments at each site were CK (unfertilized), NPK (synthetic nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium) and NPKM (synthetic NPK plus manure). The adsorption and desorption characteristics of P were evaluated using Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms. The results showed that long-term application of NPK plus manure significantly increased soil organic carbon (SOC), total P and available P at all three sites compared with the NPK and CK treatments. All three treatments fit these equations well. The maximum adsorption capacity (Qm) of P increased with NPKM treatment, and the binding energy of P (K) and the maximum buffering capacity (MBC) showed increasing trends. NPKM showed the highest Qm (2346.13 mg kg-1) at the Jinxian site, followed by Nanchang (221.16 mg kg-1) and Ningxiang (2219.36 mg kg-1). Compared to CK and NPK, the NPKM treatment showed a higher MBC as 66.64, 46.93 and 44.39 L kg-1 at all three sites. The maximum desorption capacity (Dm) of P in soil was highest with the NPKM treatment (157.58, 166.76, 143.13 mg kg-1), showing a better ability to release P in soil. The correlation matrix showed a significant positive correlation of SOC, total and available P with Qm, Dm and MBC. In conclusion, it is suggested that manure addition is crucial to improve P utilization in red paddy soils within the recommended range to avoid the risk of environmental pollution.

Partitioning Nitrospira community structure and co-occurrence patterns in a long-term inorganic and organic fertilization soil

Unraveling the drivers of the nitrogen cycling functional guilds variation in response to fertilizer management is a major goal in agroecosystem study. Nitrospira-like nitrite oxidizing bacteria can oxidize nitrite to nitrate, which play a critical role in the biogeochemical nitrogen cycle. However, how the Nitrospira community structure and co-occurrence patterns in a long-term inorganic and organic fertilization regimes within different soil aggregates have been largely unexplored. The soil samples were collected from a long-term (39-year) inorganic and organic fertilized agricultural ecosystem, including no-fertilizer (CK); mineral-fertilizer (NPK); manure-fertilizer (M); nitrogen-fertilizer (N); and M + N (MN). Three sizes of soil aggregate were manually fractionated by soil wet sieving technique with a series of meshes: (i) 2000–250 μm (macroaggregates), (ii) 250–53 μm (microaggregates), and (iii) < 53 μm fractions (silt and clay). We performed qPCR and high-throughput-sequencing to assess the Nitrospira abundance and community structure, respectively. Organic fertilization (M and MN) efficiently increased soil potential nitrite oxidation activity (PNO), which was higher in the < 53 μm than 250–53 μm and followed the 2000–250 μm fraction, than other treatments. All the fertilizer treatments resulted in a similar pattern, where the 250–53-μm fraction had significantly greater Nitrospira abundance than the 2000–250 μm and < 53 μm fractions. The alpha diversity of Nitrosipra did not change in response to the fertilization treatments and soil aggregate sizes. Nitrospira community shifted in fertilization types, while not in aggregate sizes. Nitrospira community composition and abundance significantly correlated with PNO. Network analysis suggested that organic fertilizations (M and MN) promote the complexity of Nitrospira networks and possess higher connectivity than inorganic fertilization networks. Our data suggested that fertilization strongly affected the Nitrospira community structure and co-occurrence patterns, which may implicate the importance of Nitrospira function in the nitrite oxidation process in soils with organic fertilization.

The 19-years inorganic fertilization increased bacterial diversity and altered bacterial community composition and potential functions in a paddy soil

Although the consequences of long-term inorganic fertilizer application on microbial communities have been widely investigated, the potential links between soil properties, microbial communities, and functions remain unclear in reddish paddy soil in southern China. Herein, we used Illumina Miseq sequencing technology to evaluate bacterial communities after extensive application of fertilizers started in 1998. The five treatments were control (unfertilized), N1P1K (low N plus low P plus normal potassium (K)), N2P1K (high N plus low P plus normal K), N1P2K (low N plus high P plus normal K), and N2P2K (high N plus high P plus normal K). High amounts of inorganic fertilization increased bacterial biodiversity whereas various fertilization treatments did not present any significant difference. All fertilized treatments exhibited Proteobacteria, Acidobacteria, Chloroflexi, and Actinobacteria as the main phylum. The remaining four fertilizer treatments resulted in an increase in the relative abundances of Proteobacteria, Bacteroidetes, as well as Gemmatimonadetes compared to the control, whereas a reduction in Acidobacteria, Chloroflexi, Nitrospirae, as well as Planctomycetes was observed. The principal coordinate analysis showed that bacterial communities in the control, N1P1K, and N2P1K treatments differed from that of the N1P2K and N2P2K treatments. Bacterial biodiversity and community composition were largely affected soil N:P ratios and available phosphorus. Functional groups of anoxygenic photoautotrophy S oxidizing, anoxygenic photoautotrophy, photoautotrophy, photoautotrophy, photoheterotrophy, phototrophy, nitrate denitrification, nitrite denitrification, nitrous oxide denitrification, denitrification, nitrite respiration, nitrate respiration, nitrate reduction, nitrogen respiration, and sulfur respiration were enhanced by long-term inorganic fertilization, while functional groups of aerobic nitrite oxidation, nitrogen fixation, sulfate respiration, dark sulfide oxidation, dark oxidation of sulfur compounds, and cellulolysis were decreased. Taken together, we concluded that bacterial communities in a reddish paddy soil would be phylogenetically and functionally shifted by long-term inorganic fertilization.

Does long-term inorganic and organic fertilization affect soil structural and mechanical physical quality of paddy soil?

ABSTRACTFew studies deal with the impacts of long-term fertilization on soil mechanical physical properties. A long-term fertilization experiment initiated in 1996 was performed in the paddy soil (Endoaqualf) of China. The treatments included: control (CK), chemical fertilizers (NPK), rice straw (RS), pig manure (PM), rice straw plus chemical fertilizers (RS+NPK) and pig manure plus chemical fertilizers (PM+NPK). The PM, PM+NPK, RS and RS+NPK treatments significantly (p< 0.05) increased the percentage of > 2 mm macroaggregate compared with the CK treatment, while application of chemical fertilizers alone had no significant effect on the formation of macroaggregate. Application of organic fertilizers significantly increased soil liquid limit (LL), plastic index (PI), and deformation relative to CK, while decreased soil plastic limit (PL), COLE, TS and cohesion. In contrast, the application of chemical fertilizers significantly increased the PL, COLE, TS, cohesion and internal friction angle, while decreased the LL and PI compared with the PM treatment. The application of different types of organic fertilizers could also affect the soil mechanical properties differently. The study suggested that soil management practices in paddy soil should preferably include integrated use of chemical fertilizer and manure or straw to maintain better physical environment of the soil.

Long-term inorganic fertilizer use influences bacterial communities in Mollisols of Northeast China based on high-throughput sequencing and network analyses

ABSTRACT The effects of chemical fertilizers on soil microbial communities have been well studied in a variety of terrestrial systems. However, the individual effects of N, P, and K fertilizers and their combinations (NP, NK, PK and NPK) on bacterial community structure in black soils have not been fully understood. In this study, we applied Illumina MiSeq sequencing and network analysis targeting 16S rRNA gene to comprehensively characterize the effects of 35 years of these inorganic fertilizers on community diversity and composition in the black soil. The results of α-diversity indices and principal coordinates analysis (PCoA) indicated that the N-addition treatments had larger effects than the others. The network analysis showed that the N fertilizer shifted the network structure, topological roles of individual OTUs and key bacterial populations, contributing to a simple network under the N-fertilizer treatments compared with non-N fertilizers treatments. These findings suggested that N fertilizer reduced the bacterial diversity and simplified the interactions among key bacterial members in Mollisol. The results of this study could provide basis for further researches balancing different N application levels, the bacterial community network and crop yield to maintain the ecosystem function and stability. Nitrosospira Cluster 8a Plays a Predominant Role in the Nitrification Process of a Subtropical Ultisol under Long-Term Inorganic and Organic Fertilization.

Long-term effects of inorganic and organic fertilization on nitrification activity (NA) and the abundances and community structures of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) and ammonia-oxidizing archaea (AOA) were investigated in an acidic Ultisol. Seven treatments applied annually for 27 years comprised no fertilization (control), inorganic NPK fertilizer (N), inorganic NPK fertilizer plus lime (CaCO3) (NL), inorganic NPK fertilizer plus peanut straw (NPS), inorganic NPK fertilizer plus rice straw (NRS), inorganic NPK fertilizer plus radish (NR), and inorganic NPK fertilizer plus pig manure (NPM). In nonfertilized soil, the abundance of AOA was 1 order of magnitude higher than that of AOB. Fertilization reduced the abundance of AOA but increased that of AOB, especially in the NL treatment. The AOA communities in the control and the N treatments were dominated by the Nitrososphaera and B1 clades but shifted to clade A in the NL and NPM treatments. Nitrosospira cluster 8a was found to be the most dominant AOB in all treatments. NA was primarily regulated by soil properties, especially soil pH, and the interaction with AOB abundance explained up to 73% of the variance in NA. When NL soils with neutral pH were excluded from the analysis, AOB abundance, especially the relative abundance of Nitrosospira cluster 8a, was positively associated with NA. In contrast, there was no association between AOA abundance and NA. Overall, our data suggest that Nitrosospira cluster 8a of AOB played an important role in the nitrification process in acidic soil following long-term inorganic and organic fertilization.IMPORTANCE The nitrification process is an important step in the nitrogen (N) cycle, affecting N availability and N losses to the wider environment. Ammonia oxidation, which is the first and rate-limiting step of nitrification, was widely accepted to be mainly regulated by AOA in acidic soils. However, in this study, nitrification activity was correlated with the abundance of AOB rather than that of AOA in acidic Ultisols. Nitrosospira cluster 8a, a phylotype of AOB which preferred warm temperatures, and low soil pH played a predominant role in the nitrification process in the test Ultisols. Our results also showed that long-term application of lime or pig manure rather than plant residues altered the community structure of AOA and AOB. Taken together, our findings contribute new knowledge to the understanding of the nitrification process and ammonia oxidizers in subtropical acidic Ultisol under long-term inorganic and organic fertilization.

Long-term inorganic plus organic fertilization increases yield and yield stability of winter wheat

An understanding of wheat yield and yield stability response to fertilization is important for sustainable wheat production. A 36-year long-term fertilization experiment was employed to evaluate the yield and yield stability of winter wheat. Five fertilization regimes were compared, including (1) CK, no fertilizer; (2) NPK, inorganic fertilizer only; (3) O, organic fertilizer only; (4) NPKO, 50% of NPK plus 50% of O, and (5) HNPKO, 80% of NPK plus 80% of O. The greatest yield increase was recorded in HNPKO, followed by NPKO, with O producing the lowest mean yield increase. Over the 36 years, the rate of wheat yield increase in fertilized plots ranged from 95.31 kg ha−1 year−1 in the HNPKO to 138.65 kg ha−1 year−1 in the O. Yield stability analysis using the additive main effects and multiplicative interactions (AMMI) method assigned 62.3%, 26.3%, and 11.4% of sums of squares to fertilization effect, environmental effect, and fertilization × environment interaction effect, respectively. The combination of inorganic and organic fertilization (NPKO and HNPKO) appeared to produce more stable yields than O or NPK, with lower coefficients of variation and AMMI stability value. However, wheat grown with O seemed to be the most susceptible to climate change and the least productive among the fertilized plots. Significant correlations of grain yield with soil properties and with mean air temperature were observed. These findings suggest that inorganic + organic fertilizer can increase wheat yield and its stability by improvement in soil fertility and reduction in variability to climate change.

Distinct responses of soil bacterial and fungal communities to changes in fertilization regime and crop rotation

Nutrient availability and plant diversity are two important factors determining crop productivity in agricultural ecosystems, but little is known about the underlying mechanisms shaping microbial communities and their regulatory roles in soil biological activity and function. Here, we explored the impacts of fertilization regimes and crop rotations on soil physicochemical properties, crop yield and bacterial and fungal community structures in a 26-year field experiment. The critical determinants for regulating soil enzyme activity profiles involved in carbon (C), nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) cycling were identified by the partial least squares path model (PLS-PM). Long-term inorganic or organic fertilization significantly increased soil total N by 27%–77% and crop yield by 237%–419% and decreased soil pH by an average of 0.4 units when compared with non-fertilized control. Soil bacteria were more sensitive than fungi to the fertilization practices. Nutrient additions enriched copiotrophic taxa affiliated to the Pseudomonadaceae and Cytophagaceae bacterial families, but reduced some Acidobacteria such as subgroup 4 RB41, which was the most sensitive biomarker responding to no fertilization. Conversely, fungi were more active in response to crop conversion from wheat-maize to wheat-soybean rotation, leading to a 3-fold enhancement of an unclassified Sordariomycetes family in soybean-based rotation. PLS-PM revealed that fertilization-induced increases in soil enzyme activities were regulated by the bacterial community, while plant-driven alterations in yield, organic C input and soil aggregate-size distribution played an important role for fungal development, which, however, had no significant link to soil enzyme activity profiles. Our results suggest that different response patterns of soil bacteria and fungi to agricultural practices might have consequences for ecosystem function.

Long-Term Inorganic Fertilization Effect on the Micronutrient Density in Soil and Rice Grain Cultivated in a South Korean Paddy Field

ABSTRACTSoil fertility exerts a direct influence on the essential micronutrient contents of food crops. The focus in this study was on the role that long-term inorganic fertilization (nitrogen (N), phosphorous (P) and potassium (K)) plays in increasing the micronutrient output of the paddy cropping system. After more than 45 years of inorganic fertilizer application, the combined application of fertilizers (PK > NP > NK) substantially increased As (arsenic), B (boron), Cd (cadmium), Co (cobalt), Cr (chromium), Cu (copper), Fe (iron), Mn (manganese), Mo (molybdenum), Ni (nickel), Se (selenium), V (vanadium) and Zn (zinc) density in the soil and rice grain. Optimized and continuous application of PK fertilizers increased the overall micronutrient densities in rice milling fractions (grain and bran). Micronutrient concentrations were usually the highest in bran. Both grain and bran were rich in Fe, Mn and Zn. Correlation analysis indicated that soil pH and organic matter exert a significant and direct effect on the micronutrient concentration of rice. Although long-term fertilization enhanced the proportion of micronutrients in rice grain, the levels were still much lower than the recommended dietary intake levels for micronutrients. We therefore suggest high consumption levels of brown rice (with micronutrient-dense bran layer) because they may increase the daily intake level of micronutrients and meet the nutritional requirements that people need for sound health.

Impact of 25 years of inorganic fertilization on diazotrophic abundance and community structure in an acidic soil in southern China

Although diazotrophs are important in the nitrogen (N)-cycle and contribute to the pool of plant available N, the population response to long-term inorganic fertilization is largely unknown. Here, we investigated the diazotrophic populations in both the bulk and rhizosphere soils of maize grown in an acidic farmland soil that experienced 25 years of inorganic fertilization. The fertilization regimes included unfertilized control, N fertilizer alone, N fertilizer with quicklime, phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) fertilizers, N + P + K fertilizers, and N + P + K fertilizers with quicklime. Quantitative PCR and high-throughput pyrosequencing of the nifH gene were used to analyze diazotrophic abundance and community composition. All of the fertilizer treatments improved soil nutrient availability, but those without quicklime caused soil acidification. Maize biomasses and nifH copy numbers were significantly lower under N and N + P + K treatments but increased under P + K fertilization. Quicklime applications effectively alleviated the inhibitory effect of N input. Fertilization led to decreases in operational taxonomic unit richness and shifts in diazotrophic community composition. Soil pH and nutrient availability had a cooperative effect on diazotrophic abundance, while soil nutrient availability appeared to be the main factor shaping diazotrophic community structure. Rhizosphere effects increased the nifH gene copy number but did not obviously change the diazotrophic community composition on the current research scale. Overall, the long-term inorganic fertilization affected both diazotrophic abundance and community composition, and the fertilizer treatment had a greater influence than quicklime remediation or crop cultivation on community composition.
