Smoothing the Drive: Critical Access for Intelligent Transportation Systems

Long-term evolution (LTE)-based vehicular-to-everything (V2X) service is one of the promising technologies for supporting intelligent transportation systems (ITSs). LTE adopts a request-grant approach for allocating wireless resources. Each user follows a contention-based random access (RA) procedure to transmit its request. However, this procedure may result in unbounded delay if too many users compete for limited RA resources. Therefore, prioritized critical access in the LTE RA procedure is required to differentiate critical V2X services from noncritical ones.

Effects of LTE Random Access Methods on Healthcare M2M Applications

In recent years, the communication between machines, known as Machine-to-Machine (M2M) communication, has become a dynamic research area. M2M refers to networks, which connect devices together and enable them to make a smart decision. The most viable option of implementing M2M communication is over the Long Term Evolution (LTE) network. A key challenge for M2M communication over the Long Term Evolution (LTE) is the performance of Random Access Channel (RACH) because its operation was not designed with the enormous number of M2M devices in mind. To deal with the situation reduces network access success rate, several major access control methods were adopted. However, the suggested methods generally increase the access success rate regardless of delay requirements. On the other hand, access delay is crucial for many M2M applications such as healthcare. This paper investigates the effects of LTE Random Access Methods on healthcare M2M applications when enormous number of devices are introduced. The study clearly shows that to meet the requirements for delay sensitive M2M applications, the random access (RA) resources should be very strictly and carefully allocated.

3GPP LTE Random Access Channel Self-Optimization

This paper addresses self-optimization of the random access channel (RACH) in the Third-Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) Long-Term Evolution (LTE). Ensuring satisfactory random access (RA) performance in terms of access delay (AD) is crucial for reducing the delays associated with initial access and handovers. The feasibility of self-optimization is investigated by means of simulations, where the coupling between several parameters and the RACH performance in terms of AD is provided. We present two candidate feedback control algorithms that automatically adjust key RACH parameters to meet specified AD targets.
