Long-range transport of air pollutants increases the concentration of hazardous components of PM2.5 in northern South America

Abstract. Long-range transport (LRT) of air pollutants from a range of sources can substantially enhance background pollution levels, especially in urbanized regions, which can exacerbate high-pollution episodes. In the Aburrá Valley (AV), Colombia, and other cities in northern South America, biomass burning (BB), dust, and volcanic degassing have been identified as sources of long-range aerosol transport. However, the impact of these sources on air quality and the characterization of these sources have yet to be thoroughly studied. This work investigates the influence of these sources on the chemical composition of PM2.5 during annual and intra-annual high-load aerosol events in the AV. We identified, tracked, and meteorologically characterized LRT events and evaluated their influence on PM2.5 concentration and chemical composition. We found that the LRT of aerosols from BB, dust, and volcanic degassing influenced approximately 13 %, 8 %, and 13 % of days in the year, respectively. We applied the positive-matrix-factorization (PMF) statistical model to quantify PM2.5 concentrations and chemical compositions for the different LRT event types (e.g., BB). For BB events, we identified large contributions from organic carbon (OC1 and OC2), F−, and secondary aerosol tracers (SO42- and NO3-). For dust LRT events, crustal mineral components, along with Ti and Ca, were the primary contributors to aerosol composition, while SO42-, Na, Al, and Ca were the primary contributors during volcanic events. The concentrations of some ions and toxic heavy metals (Cr, Mn, Cd, and Ni) were also elevated during BB and volcanic-degassing events. BB contributed the most to PM2.5 levels during the LRT events (∼11 µg m−3), while contributions from aerosols arising from dust and volcanic events were also substantial (<7 µg m−3). Our study identifies the Orinoco and the Middle Magdalena Valley as sizable sources of BB aerosols and Nevado del Ruiz as a source of volcanic aerosols. Additionally, we found that African dust reached the Andean region via the Caribbean route. As a result, we identify the need for future chemical-transport modeling studies in the region and new support strategies to manage internal and external pollution sources that degrade air quality in the AV and the surrounding region.

Insights into atmospheric trace gases, aerosols, and transport processes at a high-altitude station (2623 m a.s.l.) in Northeast Asia

As part of the efforts to understand long-range air pollution transport in Northeast Asia, a comprehensive field measurement campaign was conducted at the top of Changbai Mountain (2623 m a.s.l.) from 25th July to 21st August in 2021. The ambient concentrations of trace gases and chemical characteristics of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) were comparable to those at background or free tropospheric locations in China, but exceeded levels at corresponding sites in Europe and the United States. Well-defined diurnal variations were evident in most air pollutants, including carbon monoxide (CO), sulfur dioxide (SO2), and nitrogen oxide (NOx), reflecting the influence of boundary layer development and local anthropogenic activities. Ozone (O3) exhibited a unique diurnal distribution, with lower concentrations during the daytime and higher levels at nighttime, indicating a pronounced impact of downward transport of O3-rich air from the upper troposphere during the nighttime. During the campaign, organic carbon (OC) constituted the predominant component of PM2.5, comprising 43% of the total, while sulfate (SO42−) was the most abundant secondary inorganic component in PM2.5, accounting for 26%. Combining the analysis of air mass backward trajectories, we found that Changbai Mountain is primarily influenced by air masses originating from North Korea and the Sea of Japan, constituting 62% of the total, and local vegetation biological emissions and anthropogenic emissions in North Korea notably affect the observation site. Conversely, the secondary aerosol components were most abundant in marine air mass originating from the marginal seas of China and the strait between the Korean peninsula and southern Japan. Utilizing the Lagrangian photochemical trajectory model (LPTM), a significant increase in particulate SO42− concentrations was observed when air mass passed through the marginal seas of China, primarily due to SO2 oxidation reaction. This study contributes to an improved understanding of the atmospheric chemistry in the high-altitude regions of Northeast Asia and underscores the substantial role of secondary inorganic aerosol formation during the transport of marine air masses.

Source and variability of formaldehyde in the Fenwei Plain: An integrated multi-source satellite and emission inventory study

Formaldehyde (HCHO) is a high-yield product of the oxidation of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) released by anthropogenic activities, fires, and vegetations. Hence, we examined the spatiotemporal variation trends in HCHO columns observed using the Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) during 2005–2021 across the Fenwei Plain (FWP) and analysed the source and variability of HCHO using multi-source data, such as thermal anomalies. The spatial distribution of the annual mean HCHO in the FWP increased from northwest to southeast during 2005–2021, and the high-value aggregation areas contracted and gradually clustered, forming a belt-shaped distribution area from Xi'an to Baoji, north of the Qinling Mountains. The annual mean HCHO concentration generally showed a two-step increase over the 17 years. Fires showed a single-peak trend in March and a double-peak M-shaped trend in March and October, whereas urban thermal anomalies (UTAs) showed an inverted U-shaped trend over 17 years, with peaks occurring in May. The HCHO peaks are mainly caused by the alternating contributions of fires and UTAs. The fires and UTAs (predominantly industrial heat sources) played a role in controlling the background level of HCHO in the FWP. Precipitation and temperature were also important influencing variables for seasonal variations, and the influence of plant sources on HCHO concentrations had significant regional characteristics and contributions. In addition, the FWP has poor dispersion conditions and is an aggregated area for the long-range transport of air pollutants.

High-resolution dispersion modelling of PM2.5, PM10, NOx and NO2 exposure in metropolitan areas in Sweden 2000‒2018 – large health gains due to decreased population exposure

Ambient air pollution remains the major environmental cause of disease. Accurate assessment of population exposure and small-scale spatial exposure variations over long time periods is essential for epidemiological studies. We estimated annual exposure to fine and coarse particulate matter (PM2.5, PM10), and nitrogen oxides (NOx, NO2) with high spatial resolution to examine time trends 2000‒2018, compliance with the WHO Air Quality Guidelines, and assess the health impact. The modelling area covered six metropolitan areas in Sweden with a combined population of 5.5 million. Long-range transported air pollutants were modelled using a chemical transport model with bias correction, and locally emitted air pollutants using source-specific Gaussian-type dispersion models at resolutions up to 50 × 50 m. The modelled concentrations were validated using quality-controlled monitoring data. Lastly, we estimated the reduction in mortality associated with the decrease in population exposure. The validity of modelled air pollutant concentrations was good (R2 for PM2.5 0.84, PM10 0.61, and NOx 0.87). Air pollution exposure decreased substantially, from a population weighted mean exposure to PM2.5 of 12.2 µg m−3 in 2000 to 5.4 µg m−3 in 2018. We estimated that the decreased exposure was associated with a reduction of 2719 (95% CI 2046–3055) premature deaths annually. However, in 2018, 65%, 8%, and 42% of residents in the modelled areas were still exposed to PM2.5, PM10, or NO2 levels, respectively, that exceeded the current WHO Air Quality Guidelines for annual average exposure. This emphasises the potential public health benefits of reductions in air pollution emissions.

Investigating sources and health risk assessment of n-alkanes in atmospheric wet deposition in Indo-Gangetic Plain

The present study determines the levels of n-alkanes in atmospheric wet deposition at an urban site in the Indo-Gangetic Plain, Delhi, during monsoon and non-monsoon periods in 2021. The n-alkane homologs (C10–C33) were determined in wet deposition, which included wet-only and bulk samples. The average total n-alkanes were found to be 56.0 ± 16.7 and 439.4 ± 150.8 μg/L in wet-only samples, whereas, 149.6 ± 46.4 and 454.9 ± 108.4 μg/L in bulk samples during monsoon and non-monsoon periods, respectively. The low molecular weight n-alkanes (C10–C25) exhibited no odd-even predominance in wet-only and bulk depositions during monsoon and non-monsoon periods. However, the high molecular weight n-alkanes (>C25) showed odd-even predominance during the non-monsoon period. The molecular distribution patterns of n-alkanes indicated possible emissions from bacteria, fossil-fuel combustion, direct volatilization of unburnt fuels, biogenic sources, and other anthropogenic activities. A health risk assessment for n-alkanes revealed the higher susceptibility of children via dermal and oral exposure. The Hazard Index for the exposure of n-alkanes through atmospheric wet deposition was <1, i.e., within the acceptable limit. The Carbon Preference Index (CPI) and wax n-alkanes (WNA)%, supported the prevalence of mixed emission sources with higher contributions from anthropogenic activities. Five sources of n-alkanes were identified using the positive matrix factorization (PMF) model, i.e., gasoline vehicles + fuel evaporation, biogenic, biogenic + diesel exhaust, road dust, and mixed, contributing ∼30 %, 11 %, 26 %, 17 %, and 16 % respectively. The Concentration Weighted Trajectory (CWT) analysis revealed that n-alkanes in wet-only and bulk samples were contributed by different local, regional, and long-range transport of air pollutants.

Air Pollution Modeling of UNI-DEM Model by using Innovative Stochastic Approaches

In this paper we develop advanced multidimensional sensitivity analysis, based on some innovative stochastic approaches for performing air pollution modelling on a large-scale model of long-range transport of air pollutants. The Unified Danish Eulerian Model (UNI-DEM) is a very important mathematical model, and can be applied in many different studies related to damaging effects caused by high air pollution levels. We shall use it in this paper to get a reliable answer to a some very important questions regrading environmental protection. We develop some advanced Monte Carlo and quasi-Monte Carlo methods, based on special lattice and digital sequences. In this paper we will improve the digital ecosystem modeling by improving the existence stochastic approaches. The computational efficiency (in terms of relative error and computational time) of the advanced Monte Carlo algorithms for multidimensional numerical integration has been studied to analyze the sensitivity of UNI-DEM model output to variation of input emissions of the anthropogenic pollutants and of rates of several chemical reactions. The algorithms will be applied to compute global Sobol sensitivity measures corresponding to the influence of several input parameters on the concentrations of important air pollutants. The study will be done for the areas of several European cities with different geographical locations.

Possibility of condensation of nitric acid for cloud condensation nucleus in the summer at Mt. Fuji

We carried out measurements of size-segregated ionic and elemental components of aerosols at the Mt. Fuji, Japan, in the summers of 2013 and 2015. We studied aerosol chemistry in the free troposphere (FT). We investigated ratios of elements and the transformation of nitrate in long-range transported air pollution (LRTAP) mixed with domestic air pollution (DAP). We distinguished aerosols from LRTAP during daytime (D) and nighttime (N) and DAP (D) at a relative humidity of 80% based on CALIPSO satellite, back-trajectory analysis, volatile organic carbon (VOC) tracers, and elements. We identified the sources of LRTAP and DAP. DAP containing Zn and high concentrations of biogenic VOCs (BVOCs) was transported by valley winds from and forests near the foothill of the mountain. The contribution of BVOCs and secondary organic aerosols (SOAs) from the forest was high in FT. LRTAP containing high concentrations of VOCs and Pb was transported from China. The contribution of SOAs in LRTAP (N) was higher at Mt. Fuji than at a remote site in Okinawa. A comparison of chlorine loss in this study with the remote site revealed that HNO3 was absorbed in coarse particles in LRTAP (D) from urban sites when LRTAP (D) was mixed with DAP. When (NH4) 2 NO3 was degraded to NH3 and HNO3 during transport to Mt. Fuji, the high excess-HNO3 was absorbed in the aqueous phase without neutralization. This result indicates that nitrate can be enriched during cloud processes when LRTAP (D) is mixed with DAP.

Systematic Literature Review on Ozone Dispersion Correlated with Diurnal Concentration Pattern in Urban and Rural Areas

&#x0D; &#x0D; &#x0D; Ground level ozone is known to exhibit a strong daily variation of concentration leading to long-range transport of air pollutants from urban to rural areas. Moreover, the characteristics of O3 relationship between urban, suburban, and rural sites can be explained by O3 photochemical chemistry and meteorological dispersions as indicated by the different result of O3 diurnal pattern. However, little is known about the global phenomenon of diurnal concentration of ozone, meteorological dispersion such as long-range transport, and their correlation with ozone precursors, especially in urban and rural areas. This paper attempt to compare the difference between daily ozone fluctuations in both sites and assess some factors that cause long-range ozone transport from urban and rural areas both in subtropical and tropical areas for global scale. Using systematic literature review analysis with the PRISMA method, it examined 43 peer-reviewed articles published between 2010 and 2022 globally meeting the inclusion criteria. The result showed that the fluctuation patterns of daytime ozone in urban and rural areas are different to those in tropical and subtropical regions, depending on latitude. This was primarily due to the influence of solar radiation and the presence of precursors. Conversely, a slight decrease in ozone rate at night occurs because the precursor was accumulated by the shutdown of photochemical ozone production. Some precursors of ozone from other regions can be transported and accumulated from the long-range transport process in other locations. This paper serves as an initial guideline to analysing the pattern of ozone concentration in urban and rural areas and the factors that influence it.&#x0D; &#x0D; &#x0D;

Do heat waves worsen air quality? A 21-year observational study in Seoul, South Korea

Heat waves are generally known to deteriorate air quality. However, the impacts of heat waves on air quality can substantially vary depending on the characteristics of heat waves. In this study, we examine air quality changes in Seoul during heat waves and their associations with large-scale atmospheric patterns. For this, air quality data from 25 stations and meteorological data from 23 weather stations and reanalysis datasets during July and August of 2001–2021 are used. Under heat waves, the mean daily PM10, NO2, and CO concentrations decrease by 7.9 %, 6.1 %, and 4.6 %, respectively, whereas the mean daily PM2.5, O3, and SO2 concentrations increase by 4.1 %, 17.2 %, and 2.9 %, respectively. The atmospheric circulation under heat waves is less favorable for long-range transport of air pollutants to Seoul. The PM2.5/PM10 ratio increases under heat waves, indicating that the secondary formation of aerosols becomes more important under heat waves. 37 % of the heat wave days are accompanied by severe O3 pollution exceeding the O3 concentration standard in South Korea. There is a significant variability of air quality in Seoul within heat waves. The heat wave days with higher concentrations of PM2.5, PM10, O3, NO2, and CO than their non-heat wave means exhibit a prominent difference in large-scale atmospheric pattern from the heat wave days with lower concentrations. This difference is characterized by a zonal wave-like pattern of geopotential height, which is similar to the circumglobal teleconnection pattern known as one of the major patterns for heat waves in South Korea. This zonal wave-like pattern produces more stagnant conditions over Seoul.

Source apportionment of PM2.5 and the impact of future PM2.5 changes on human health in the monsoon-influenced humid subtropical climate

Local emission sources and long-range transport of air pollutants are the main causes of PM2.5 pollution in developing metropolises. A modeling system was used to determine the main contributors of PM2.5 and future changes in PM2.5 concentrations in Hanoi, one of the fast-growing and most polluted capital cities in the world. Additionally, BenMAP was used to estimate the number of premature deaths caused or avoided due to PM2.5 concentration changes. October and December 2017 as well as April and June 2018 were selected for analysis. The source apportionment approach revealed that the boundary conditions (BCON), were the primary source of PM2.5, accounting for 24–59.7%. Agriculture was a substantial contributor of PM2.5 within Hanoi in June and October, accounting for 27.8 and 18.8%, respectively. Projected emissions for 2030 from our previous work, which were estimated based on the action plans and scenarios proposed by the government, were used as input into the air quality modeling system to analyze changes in the concentrations of the total PM2.5 and its major components owing to emissions changes. It is shown that, the concentrations of PM2.5 can increase by 0.5 and 1.6 μg/m3 in April and December, and decrease by 3.2 and 1.5 μg/m3 in June and October, respectively. Using BenMAP , it is estimated that these changes can cause 45 and 95 premature deaths in April and December, but prevent 198 and 88 premature deaths in June and October respectively, in Hanoi.

The effects of meteorology and biomass burning on urban air quality: The case of Bangkok

Bangkok, one of the biggest metropolitan cities in Asia, has been experiencing poor (PM10 > 50 μg/m3 annual average) air quality for decades. Major sources of air pollution are traffic emissions, biomass burning, and non-combustible sources. In this study, the impact of meteorology and biomass burning on the concentration of particulate matter was assessed. Data from three monitoring stations and remotely sensed fire count between 2017 and 2020 was used to investigate the association. Moreover, the spatiotemporal pattern of aerosol optical depth (AOD) and fire count derived from remotely sensed data were investigated to observe their association. This study found that temperature, relative humidity, rainfall, wind speed, and wind direction have a significant negative relationship with particulate matter concentration. In contrast, atmospheric pressure and fire count have a significant positive correlation with particulate matter concentration. Moreover, the pollution rose diagram for particulate matter indicated that the northeasterly wind is the prevailing wind direction that carries the most pollutants. Furthermore, the Hybrid Single-Particle Lagrangian Integrated Trajectory (HYSPLIT) model and AOD indicated that biomass burning in neighboring regions significantly (p < 0.05) affected the particulate matter concentration in Bangkok. Multiple linear regression (MLR) analysis established that atmospheric pressure has the highest negative impact on the city air quality, followed by biomass burning, while heavy rainstorms were the most substantial parameter that reduced particulate matter concentration. Taken together, these findings highlight the importance of meteorological factors in understanding air pollution mechanisms in Bangkok. Equally important, the insights gained from this study may assist in addressing the long-range transport of air pollutants from biomass burning, which requires a coordinated engagement with neighboring countries.

Analysis of Surface Level PM2.5 Measured by Low-Cost Sensor and Satellite-Based Column Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD) over Kathmandu

A low-cost PurpleAir PA-II sensor was installed, in 2020 at the Institute of Engineering (IOE) Pulchowk Campus, TU located in Kathmandu valley, Nepal, to measure particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter equal to or smaller than 2.5 µm (PM2.5). The observation shows that hourly averaged PM2.5 fluctuates bimodally in four seasons (Winter: December, January, and February; Spring: March–May; Summer: June–September; and Autumn: October–November), with the highest levels occurring during morning and evening rush hours. PurpleAir records PM2.5 with a maximum average of 101 ± 26.31 µg m–3, in winter, 55.58 ± 11.42 µg m–3, in spring, 45.46 ± 12.16 µg m–3, in autumn, and a minimum of 22.78 ± 3.23 µg m–3, in the summer. Due to rain and diffusion in the vertical atmosphere, PM2.5 levels are lowest during the summer. The ± number for each season represents the standard deviation from the hourly average. AOD550nm data collected by MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) onboard two NASA satellites, Terra and Aqua, are compared with simultaneously observed PM2.5. With humidity correction factor f(RH), R2 increases from 0.413 to 0.608 (in winter), 0.426 to 0.508 (in spring), and 0.083 to 0.293 (in autumn). The summer AOD data and PM2.5 are not compared due to a lack of AOD observations. By comparing the column-integrated aerosol data with the surface-level aerosol concentration, this study illustrates the relevance of atmospheric parameters while investigating the reliability of PurpleAir measurements. A cluster analysis of five-day back trajectories of air masses arriving at different altitudes in different seasons indicates that long-range transport of air pollution contributes to MODIS's column integrated AOD by adding aerosol population.

Seasonal Characteristics of Atmospheric PM2.5 in an Urban Area of Vietnam and the Influence of Regional Fire Activities

This study investigated the seasonal variation and chemical characteristics of atmospheric PM2.5 at an urban site in Hanoi City of Vietnam in summer (July 2020) and winter (January 2021) periods. The study results showed that the average value of daily PM2.5 concentrations observed for the winter period was about 3 times higher than the counterpart for the summer period. The concentrations of major species in atmospheric PM2.5 (SO42−, NH4+, K+, OC and EC) measured during the winter period were also significantly higher than those during the summer period. The contribution of secondary sources to the measured OC (the largest contributor to PM2.5) was larger than that of primary sources during the winter period, compared to those in the summer period. The correlation analysis among anions and cations in PM2.5 suggested that different sources and atmospheric processes could influence the seasonal variations of PM2.5 species. The unfavorable meteorological conditions (lower wind speed and lower boundary layer height) in the winter period were identified as one of the key factors contributing to the high PM2.5 pollution in this period. With the predominance of north and northeast winds during the winter period, the long-range transport of air pollutants which emitted from the highly industrialized areas and the intensive fire regions in the southern part of China and Southeast Asia region were likely other important sources for the highly elevated concentrations of PM2.5 and its chemical species in the study area.

Air quality assessment in biosphere reserves close to emission sources. The case of the Spanish “Tablas de Daimiel” national park

This work shows that biosphere reserves, national parks and other protected natural areas require in situ tools to monitor and detect local and remote air pollution sources which are a threat to flora, fauna water and soil. Industries in surrounding areas, traffic and long-range transport of air pollution, can change with time and meteorology and so each national park should also have a historical database of the air quality in the site. This study reports surface measurements of ozone, NO, NO2, CO, SO2 and PM2.5 acquired from March 2020 to July 2021 in “Las Tablas de Daimiel”, a wetland Mediterranean National Park bordered by different cities and new industries in the field of the revalorization of agricultural wastes. Simultaneous data from a background station in a rural area isolated from air pollution are considered as reference.Twelve campaigns of one week duration were also performed to sample air in sorbent tubes to analyse volatile organic compounds from anthropogenic sources. Data are discussed considering meteorology, especially wind speed and direction together with the assessment of back-trajectories of air masses from distant sources. The results show that the effects of pollution from local and faraway sources on air quality in the park were weak. Thus, except for the high levels of ozone, with a mean value of 71 μg.m−3, measured mass loadings for pollutants were low and not in exceedance of the air quality standards. Saharan dust events were frequent and contributed to PM2.5 levels in the site. NOx and SO2 average concentrations (3.2 and 0.4 μg.m−3, respectively) were below the recommended critical levels for vegetation and all the quantified VOCs were found in average concentration levels below 0.5 μg.m−3.

Prediction of health effects of Asian dust in Japan

BACKGROUND AND AIM The health effects of cross-border air pollutants and Asian dust are of significant concern in Japan. Currently, models predicting the arrival of aerosols have not investigated the association between arrival predictions and health effects. We investigated the association between subjective health symptoms and data acquired from the Japan Meteorological Agency&amp;#x27;s (JMA&amp;#x27;s) Model of Aerosol Species in the Global Atmosphere (MASINGAR) aerosol model with the objective of ascertaining if the data could be applied for predicting health effects. METHODS Subjective symptom scores were collected using self-administered questionnaires and used with the JMA model’s surface concentration data to conduct a risk evaluation using a multiple linear mixed model, from 2013 to 2015. Altogether, 160 individuals provided 16226 responses. Data regarding climate (temperature, humidity, and atmospheric pressure) and environmental factors (NO2, SO2, and Ox) were used as covariates. We calculated the association between the surface dust concentration and symptoms. RESULTS A strong association was also observed for nasal and cough symptoms (P for trend &amp;#x3c; 0.001). The differences in scores of nasal symptoms (sneezing and runny) of the highest quartile [Q4] vs. the lowest [Q1] were 0.039 (95% confidence interval (CI): 0.02–0.01, p &amp;#x3c; 0.05) and 0.046 (95% CI: 0.002–0.02, p &amp;#x3c; 0.05), respectively. The differences in scores of cough symptoms were 0.036 (95% confidence interval (CI): 0.002–0.01, p &amp;#x3c; 0.05). CONCLUSIONS This study suggests that predictive models for pollutants’ arrival can be used to capability to foresee and possibly prevent the health impact of long-range transport of air pollutants, recommending the potential role of aerosol forecast models in health care. Assessment of organochlorine pesticides in the atmosphere of South Korea: spatial distribution, seasonal variation, and sources.

Organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) are widely used in certain countries. We determined atmospheric concentrations, distribution patterns, and seasonal variations of OCPs at four sites in South Korea for 1year. Samples of 22 OCPs were collected using a high-volume air sampler, and measured via the isotope dilution method with HRGC/HRMS. In South Korea, pentachlorobenzene (PeCB), hexachlorocyclohexane (HCB), and endosulfan (EnSF) were dominant, accounting for > 87% of total OCPs. Spatial distributions showed significant differences and the highest levels were observed in Seosan (295.2pg·m-3), indicating the compounding potential of diverse sources as Seosan has concentrated large-scale industrial complexes and agricultural activity (Seoul: 243.6pg·m-3 > Jeju: 193.5pg·m-3 > Baengnyeong: 178.2pg·m-3). The isomeric ratios of OCPs in the South Korean atmosphere indicated that the dominant sources of HCB and dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane were primarily used in the past; meanwhile, chlordane (CHL) and EnSFs were derived from recent material inputs. Seasonally, OCP concentrations largely peaked in summer with minimum values in winter. This apparent temperature dependence suggests the re-volatilization of accumulated chemicals into the atmosphere. Additionally, an air mass back trajectory indicated the influence of pollutants released from a reservoir through long-range atmospheric transport in the summer. In particular, restricted OCPs are primarily released into the atmosphere by inadvertent sources, such as industrial activities and volatilization from contaminated areas. Thus, severe OCP pollution in Korea is due to the mobile nature of the particles. These data can be useful for the continuous monitoring of long-range transported air pollutants that are transferred between countries.

Effect of Vertical Wind Shear on PM2.5 Changes over a Receptor Region in Central China

Vertical wind shear (VWS) significantly impacts the vertical mixing of air pollutants and leads to changes in near-surface air pollutants. We focused on Changsha (CS) and Jingmen (JM), the upstream and downstream urban sites of a receptor region in central China, to explore the impact of VWS on surface PM2.5 changes using 5-year wintertime observations and simulations from 2016–2020. The surface PM2.5 concentration was lower in CS with higher anthropogenic PM2.5 emissions than in JM, and the correlation between wind speed and PM2.5 was negative for clean conditions and positive for polluted conditions in both two sites. The difference in the correlation pattern of surface PM2.5 and VWS between CS and JM might be due to the different influences of regional PM2.5 transport and boundary layer dynamics. In downstream CS, the weak wind and VWS in the height of 1–2 km stabilized the ABL under polluted conditions, and strong northerly wind accompanied by enhanced VWS above 2 km favored the long-range transport of air pollutants. In upstream JM, local circulation and long-range PM2.5 transport co-determined the positive correlation between VWS and PM2.5 concentrations. Prevailed northerly wind disrupted the local circulation and enhanced the surface PM2.5 concentrations under polluted conditions, which tend to be an indicator of regional transport of air pollutants. The potential contribution source maps calculated from WRF-FLEXPART simulations also confirmed the more significant contribution of regional PM2.5 transport to the PM2.5 pollution in upstream region JM. By comparing the vertical profiles of meteorological parameters for typical transport- and local-type pollution days, the northerly wind prevailed throughout the ABL with stronger wind speed and VWS in transport-type pollution days, favoring the vertical mixing of transported air pollutants, in sharp contrast to the weak wind conditions in local-type pollution days. This study provided the evidence that PM2.5 pollution in the Twain-Hu Basin was affected by long-distance transport with different features at upstream and downstream sites, improving the understanding of the air pollutant source–receptor relationship in air quality changes with regional transport of air pollutants.

Anthropogenic aerosols in precipitation over the Indo-Gangetic basin.

This study investigated the concentration of heavy metals in rainwater (RW) at a semi-arid region of the Indo-Gangetic basin to understand the influence of local, regional, or long-range transport of air pollutants during the monsoon and non-monsoonal rain. The concentration of heavy metals in RW was determined using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer with Graphite Furnace, the scavenging ratio was estimated, and source interpretation was carried out using Principle Component Analysis (PCA) and HYSPLIT model. Ca was the highest contributor in RW followed by Na, Fe, Mg, and Al whereas Ba, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn were found in trace quantity. During the non-monsoon period, the crustal component (Ca) was the highest; however, during the monsoon, sea salt components (Na and Fe) were found higher. The scavenging ratio for metals was estimated and was found many times higher than those reported over European sites. The moderate concentration of heavy metal in RW was found with higher wind from South (S), South-West (SW), and North-West (NW) directions. Air mass back trajectory shows a significant contribution of metals from the Arabian Sea (South-Westerly wind) during active monsoon, whereas, in the non-monsoon season, the air masses mainly originated from the north-west indicating a contribution from wind-blown dust. The correlation analysis has shown the positive correlations between Ca and Mg, Mg and Na, Na and Cu, Al and Zn, Zn and Ba, Ba and Cr, and Cr and Zn. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) indicated loading of Ca, Na, Mg, Cu, Mn, and Ni in the first factor suggesting their crustal origin, whereas the second factor showed high loading of Al, Ba, Zn, Cr, and Ni indicating vehicular exhaust and industrial emission as their major sources, and loading for Ba and Mg in the third factor indicates the mixed contribution from both natural and anthropogenic sources in rainwater during the monsoon and non-monsoon periods. The data of this study can be used in the air pollution transport model. This study will help in source interpretation over the Indo-Gangetic basin and will help in planning for National Clean Air Program (NCAP) and deriving critical load.

Tropical and Boreal Forest – Atmosphere Interactions: A Review

This review presents how the boreal and the tropical forests affect the atmosphere, its chemical composition, its function, and further how that affects the climate and, in return, the ecosystems through feedback processes. Observations from key tower sites standing out due to their long-term comprehensive observations: The Amazon Tall Tower Observatory in Central Amazonia, the Zotino Tall Tower Observatory in Siberia, and the Station to Measure Ecosystem-Atmosphere Relations at Hyytiäla in Finland. The review is complemented by short-term observations from networks and large experiments. The review discusses atmospheric chemistry observations, aerosol formation and processing, physiochemical aerosol, and cloud condensation nuclei properties and finds surprising similarities and important differences in the two ecosystems. The aerosol concentrations and chemistry are similar, particularly concerning the main chemical components, both dominated by an organic fraction, while the boreal ecosystem has generally higher concentrations of inorganics, due to higher influence of long-range transported air pollution. The emissions of biogenic volatile organic compounds are dominated by isoprene and monoterpene in the tropical and boreal regions, respectively, being the main precursors of the organic aerosol fraction. Observations and modeling studies show that climate change and deforestation affect the ecosystems such that the carbon and hydrological cycles in Amazonia are changing to carbon neutrality and affect precipitation downwind. In Africa, the tropical forests are so far maintaining their carbon sink. It is urgent to better understand the interaction between these major ecosystems, the atmosphere, and climate, which calls for more observation sites, providing long-term data on water, carbon, and other biogeochemical cycles. This is essential in finding a sustainable balance between forest preservation and reforestation versus a potential increase in food production and biofuels, which are critical in maintaining ecosystem services and global climate stability. Reducing global warming and deforestation is vital for tropical forests.
