Optimizing location-routing and demand allocation in the household waste collection system using a branch-and-price algorithm

In catering to the rapid development of urbanization and the growing urban population, it is essential to design an efficient and effective household waste collection system for guaranteeing a favorable ecological environment in cities. This paper focuses on a location-routing and demand allocation problem (LRDAP) in the household waste collection system where the household waste is initially allocated and transported to a set of intermediate transfer stations using a category of small garbage vehicles, and subsequently a fleet of large garbage vehicles visits each transfer station and transports the collected household waste to the waste disposal center for harmless treatment. The purpose is to simultaneously determine the location of transfer stations, the demand allocation of household waste collection and the routing plan of garbage vehicles while maximizing the efficiency of household waste collection within the whole system. Then, we formulate the proposed LRDAP into a mixed integer program. To solve our LRDAP, an exact branch-and-price (B&P) algorithm is developed along with several acceleration strategies involving column generation (CG) stabilization and heuristic dynamic programming (DP). Finally, we illustrate the proposed model and solution methodology by dealing with real-world problem instances with respect to household waste collection in China. Computational results are presented that explore the performance of our proposed B&P algorithm, analyze the optimized location-routing and demand allocation plan, discuss the impact of selected parameters, and gain some managerial insights in designing an efficient and effective household waste collection system under different decision-making conditions.

Re-envisioning the Park-and-Ride concept for the automated vehicle (AV) era with Private-to-Shared AV transfer stations

Cities implemented park-and-ride (PNR) systems to decrease congestion in dense urban areas while providing transit options to travelers who live in a city's low- to medium-density regions. The success of PNR systems is mixed, as they suffer from several disadvantages, namely, the uncertainty of parking locations and infrequent and/or unreliable transit services, and the fact that travelers still need to walk to their destination. Motivated by the premise of PNR systems and the potential of automated vehicles (AVs), to address each of the shortcomings of PNR systems, this study proposes a future system with near-ubiquitous AVs where travelers transfer from privately owned AVs (PAVs) to shared-use, shared-ride AVs (SAVs), called a PAV-SAV transfer system. This study proposes a modeling framework to assess the potential market share of the PAV-SAV transfer system and the network impacts (e.g., congestion, vehicle miles traveled) of the proposed system. Finally, the study identifies good designs for the PAV-SAV transfer system using scenario analysis. The critical design variables are the location of transfer stations, the capacity of SAVs, and the transfer station connector links. For the Greater Los Angeles area, the computational results show a market share for PAV-SAV of almost 18% for person trips terminating in downtown Los Angeles. In all scenarios, the proposed PAV-SAV system decreases vehicle hours traveled (VHT) across the whole network with significant decreases in the urban core. For all designs, the PAV-SAV system decreases vehicle miles traveled (VMT) compared to a network without PAV-SAV transfer stations, albeit only slightly. Locating transfer stations closer to the urban core, increasing vehicle capacities, and connecting transfer stations to both arterial links and highway links improves network performance (i.e., VMT and VHT) and increases the market share of the PAV-SAV system.

Designing sustainable logistics networks for classified municipal solid wastes collection and transferring with multi-compartment vehicles

The success stories of waste classification and processing systems in reducing emissions and conserving natural resources have inspired many countries to adopt similar systems. The current research on waste collection logistics network design is limited in capturing the features of waste classification systems. The environmental objectives, the use of multi-compartment vehicles to separate waste and reduce driving distance, and the joint decision-making of transfer station locations and vehicle routes are not integrated into the same optimization framework. This study aims to investigate the strategic planning of transfer stations and vehicle fleet dispatch in a city-level classified waste collection system. The problem is formulated as an integer programming problem that minimizes total travel costs while considering greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. To solve the problem effectively, we propose a fast hybrid heuristic algorithm based on column generation (CG) and Adaptive Large Neighborhood Search (ALNS). The proposed algorithm framework is tested on various instances and applied to a real-sized logistics network in Chengdu, China. Computational results indicate that the proposed algorithm achieves high efficiency while maintaining a satisfactory gap. The results confirm that introducing the waste classification system can help reduce total travel costs and greenhouse gas emissions.

Site suitability analysis for locating construction and demolition waste transfer station: an Indian case study.

Construction and Demolition Waste Management (CDWM) includes collecting, transporting, processing, and disposing construction and demolition (C&D) waste, where collection and transportation of bulky and voluminous C&D waste contribute significantly to economic and environmental impacts. Transfer station (TS) being a link between various waste management (WM) facilities plays a significant role in collection and transportation of waste. Thus, locating TS at suitable site can help in reducing the overall impacts. Employment of Geographic Information System (GIS) analysis tools in CDWM is a powerful strategy for site suitability study. A case study in Coimbatore, India, is presented in this study using GIS-based multi-criteria analysis for locating C&D waste TS. The criteria for site suitability analysis are chosen based on literature review, regulations, and experts' opinions. Weights of the chosen criteria are estimated using analytic hierarchy process (AHP), and the final suitability map is created by weighted overlay analysis (WOA) in GIS environment. Results provide first-hand information for local decision makers to locate C&D waste transfer station in the chosen study region and report that 12% of the entire area is "highly suitable" for transfer station location.

Robust optimization model of waste transfer station location considering existing facility adjustment

The location of waste transfer station is a problem that has been studied in the previous literature, while no studies devote to considering the adjustment of the existing transfer station in the site selection process of waste transfer station to the best of our knowledge. However, in reality, a large number of existing transfer stations have a huge impact on the planning of new transfer stations. Therefore, this paper firstly adopts a location model based on mixed integer linear programming as the first attempt to consider the adjustment of existing transfer stations in the process of waste transfer station location. Next, a robust model is established by considering the uncertainty of waste production. And the budget of uncertainty is introduced to control the conservativeness. A case study in Beijing, China is given to illustrate the applicability of this model. The study finds that compared with the model without considering the adjustment of existing transfer stations, the investment cost of the deterministic model in this paper is significantly reduced, and the total cost is also reduced to a certain extent. Moreover, the solution of the robust model reveals the significant impact of waste output uncertainty on the location strategy of waste transfer station.

Sustainable multi-trip periodic redesign-routing model for municipal solid waste collection network: the case study of Tehran.

Daily transportation of wastes due to its environmental, financial, and social aspects has been considered a challenging issue in developing countries' municipal solid waste management systems. The location of transfer stations as intermediate nodes in municipal solid waste management network affects optimal collection frequency. A sustainable multi-period and multi-trip vehicle routing problem integrated with relocation models was developed to redesign the intermediate transfer stations and find optimal vehicle routes and the best collection frequency for each municipal solid waste generation point. Regarding the social aspects of a sustainable solid waste management system, an extended social life cycle assessment methodology for redesign and routing operations was developed based on the UNEP guidelines. The social life cycle assessment methodology evaluated the probable social effects of the system throughout the entire life cycle using an iterative policy. In this study, selected impact subcategories and inventory indicators for the routing and redesign system were utilized to quantify the system social score. Besides, the developed model was solved for different problem instances. The results indicated that system social score was affected by collection frequencies decisions, redesign policy, and the number of demand nodes. Furthermore, the model was applied to a real-world case study resulting in a total cost reduction of 66% that occurred by a 86% reduction in weekly traveled distance and a 12% decrease in routing social score.

Analyzing Influencing Factors of Transfer Passenger Flow of Urban Rail Transit: A New Approach Based on Nested Logit Model Considering Transfer Choices.

With the continuous improvement of the operation line network of urban rail transit, analyzing influencing factors of transfer passenger flow of urban rail transit is critical to improve the transfer demand analysis of urban rail transit. Using data collected from questionnaires, transfer passenger flow surveys and smart cards, this study proposes an approach base on nested logit passenger flow assignment model considering transfer choice behaviours of passengers. The transfer passenger flow at seven transfer stations in Nanjing is obtained. Subsequently, this study investigates the potential influencing factors of transfer passenger flow, including the node degree, geographic location (located in the city center, urban fringe, suburbs or suburban fringe), economic location (distance from the city center) and transportation locations (if it is close to a transportation hub or in combination with the hub) of rail transit transfer stations. The results indicate that a positive correlation between the transfer passenger flow and the node degrees of transfer stations. However, the relationship between transfer passenger flow and the economic, geographic, and transportation locations of transfer stations is not clear. The finding have reference value for the network design of rail transit transfer stations and transfer facilities, and provide reference for the analysis of passenger flow under network operation.

Reverse logistics optimization design for recyclable municipal solid waste is a social and economic problem. This paper mainly studies the location problem of reverse logistics network transfer station, which involves how to select the most effective location from the set of points to be selected. In this paper, an improved P median location selection model is proposed on the premise of minimizing the impact on residents, and greedy extraction heuristic algorithm is adopted to solve the model. Finally, the effectiveness of the model in the construction of MSW reverse logistics site selection is illustrated through an example analysis, and theoretical reference is provided for the actual site selection problem.

Towards a robust facility location model for construction and demolition waste transfer stations under uncertain environment: The case of Chongqing

A well-designed collection system plays a critical role in establishing a financially sustainable construction and demolition (C&D) management system. In order to achieve the best performance of the collection system, the development of an advanced decision-making tool with trade-off among multiple criteria is significant. The main objective of this research is to select economically best locations of transfer stations (TSs) to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of the collection system for C&D waste. This paper develops a scenario-based multi-period robust facility location model to minimize the total cost of the collection system for C&D waste. The novelty of the proposed model is the consideration of the uncertainty of C&D waste generation source locations in the construction industry. Also, besides the traditional economic criteria, the risk of decision-making or the reliability of the optimal solution obtained is taken into account for the best overall performance solution. A comparative analysis is performed to demonstrate the superiority of the proposed model. The trade-offs between decision-making risk and economic criteria are performed with a sensitivity analysis. By applying the proposed robust facility location model for TSs for a case study in Chongqing, China, this paper verify the effectiveness and usefulness of the model. The results of this study indicate that the dynamic location strategy made by the proposed robust model can remain the optimal layout of the TSs under uncertainty to improve facility efficiency. Moreover, focusing on risk criteria in decision-making can achieve the best performance solution with reliability.

Modeling transfer station locations considering source separation of solid waste in urban centers: A case study of Bilaspur city, India

Lack of infrastructures, rapid growth in population, high urbanization and unsegregation makes the management of municipal solid waste a difficult task for local authorities. The paper proposes an approach for selecting the waste transfer station locations under unsegregated and segregated waste scenarios in an economical manner. The analytical approach is a combination of two basic components, (i) a mathematical optimization model for the overall cost of municipal solid waste management; and (ii) tools of a geographic information system for creating the dataset of the mathematical model. The novelty in the developed model includes strategic allocation of transfer stations for three scenarios: (i) solid waste collected from sources without segregation (Scenario (I)); (ii) waste collected considering source separation and transfer stations taking only one type of wastes (Scenario (II)); (iii) waste collected under source separation and transfer stations having multiple halls for multiple types of waste (Scenario (III)). The proposed approach has been verified by applying on city of Bilaspur, India. Optimization model selects six best locations for Scenario (I), (II) and five for Scenario (III). Results also show that among the three scenarios studied, scenario (III) is the best as it is providing more profit than scenario (II) and (I). Validity of the model is tested by ANOVA analysis and it suggested key parameters (frequency, operating cost and land value) as significant. This finding suggests that transfer stations with or without multiple halls under source separation environment can earn the profit from solid waste while solving the problem of high collection cost and landfills.

Interval-valued facility location model: An appraisal of municipal solid waste management system

This study presents an interval-valued facility location model to find economically best locations for transfer stations under uncertainty. Transfer stations are the vital part of contemporary municipal solid waste management systems and economical siting of transfer stations using developed model lead to a financially sustainable system. Often, the associated uncertainty of these systems cannot be modeled by conventional probabilistic or fuzzy approaches under a data scarce scenario; however, models based on interval analysis are found to be very effective in such cases. A set of univariate and multivariate sensitivity analyses adduces the need of uncertainty analysis for quantification and propagation of uncertainty. The demonstration of model on city of Nashik (India) provides (i) economical feasibility, optimum capacity and economically best locations of transfer stations; and (ii) impact of uncertain parameters on the best locations. The developed model felicitates a convenient decision-making to identify economically best locations of transfer stations under uncertain environment.

Study on location allocation of earthquake emergency service depot based on hybrid multi-attribute decision making

The aim of this paper is to propose a location model of earthquake emergency service depot on the basis of hybrid multi-attribute decision-making method. The advantage of the proposed method is that practical mixed uncertainty of location decision information is considered, and the corresponding factors that affect the location of transfer stations are contained. To solve the location problem, a hybrid multi-attribute decision procedure without information transformation is developed. Besides, a novel weighting method and aggregation process is given. Finally, a numerical example is provided to show the feasibility and validity of the proposed method.

Solid waste collection/transport optimization and vegetation land cover estimation using Geographic Information System (GIS): A case study of a proposed smart-city

Population growth at an interminable rate is depleting resources uncontrollably. Researchers are concentrating on sustainable development mainly in urban areas where the growth rate is higher than any other regions. In addition to the development of new technologies for reducing the rate of natural resources usage, technologies are being developed to recover the resources from waste. In this perspective, solid waste management with proper collection and transportation techniques facilitates the waste managers to segregate and extract the required resources for recovery. GIS and remote sensing approaches come to the aid of managing this solid waste through its generation stage to the dumping stage. Using a proposed smart city, Vellore in India as a case study, this paper discusses possible collection methods for solid waste management in India, and presents methods for optimal collection and transportation of waste using GIS techniques through network analysis. The optimal waste collection and transportation routes derived from our analysis result in 59.12% reduction in travel distance along the routine collection road network followed. In addition, this study proposes possible transfer station locations based on various design factors like open land availability, ease of access from all the composting units/dustbin locations, transfer means by tractor trailers, and sanitation and environmental requirements. This study also reveals the vegetation cover changes at a depletion rate of 2100square meters area in and around dumping sites.

The enhancement of city makes increasing volume of domestic waste. The consequences is the waste management become more difficult and being a main problem for big cities such as Surabaya. At present, waste management in Surabaya still using end of pipe approach solution, which are consist of three procedures: (i) collecting, (ii) transferring, and (iii) final disposal. The temporary waste transfer station (TPS) and final waste disposal location (TPA) is very important on the collecting procedure. Transfer station is public facility necesities, but it is becomed a problem for the people if its location is near by their daily activities due to the air pollution and stained. Based on these phenomena, it is needed to formulate the determination factors of waste transfer location based on community aspiration. To achieve those factors, it is needed some identification of factors and indicators which are use to determine location of transfer station based on community aspiration. There are three analysis methode: (i) descriptive-qualitative, (2) comparative analysis to find out the information added of determination temporary waste transfer station location's factors from publics' participation, (ii) scoring analysis to find out the weight of factors identify each priority factors based on both preferences, and (iii) quadrant analysis to find out the mappings priority factors on both preferences. The analysis result are: (i) some distances between location of TPS with settlement or public facilities to be exist (ii) integrated between location TPS and recycle waste management, (iii) the location of TPS election will not disturb the fulfill of community needs of natural resources especially on ground water quality. The major priority factors on determination of TPS location in Sukolilo sub district are the demography and physical environment, while the the easy accessibility became the major factor of the main respondent Finally, the lowest priority factors are the utility and appropriate technology. The research result can be use for more detail study to determine parameter factors of TPS location, particularly for Sukolilo sub district and generally for urban area.

A facility location model for municipal solid waste management system under uncertain environment

In municipal solid waste management system, decision makers have to develop an insight into the processes namely, waste generation, collection, transportation, processing, and disposal methods. Many parameters (e.g., waste generation rate, functioning costs of facilities, transportation cost, and revenues) in this system are associated with uncertainties. Often, these uncertainties of parameters need to be modeled under a situation of data scarcity for generating probability distribution function or membership function for stochastic mathematical programming or fuzzy mathematical programming respectively, with only information of extreme variations. Moreover, if uncertainties are ignored, then the problems like insufficient capacities of waste management facilities or improper utilization of available funds may be raised. To tackle uncertainties of these parameters in a more efficient manner an algorithm, based on interval analysis, has been developed. This algorithm is applied to find optimal solutions for a facility location model, which is formulated to select economically best locations of transfer stations in a hypothetical urban center. Transfer stations are an integral part of contemporary municipal solid waste management systems, and economic siting of transfer stations ensures financial sustainability of this system. The model is written in a mathematical programming language AMPL with KNITRO as a solver. The developed model selects five economically best locations out of ten potential locations with an optimum overall cost of [394,836, 757,440] Rs.11Rs. is Indian currency and 1Rs.=0.015USD as of 18th October 2016. /day ([5906, 11,331] USD/day) approximately. Further, the requirement of uncertainty modeling is explained based on the results of sensitivity analysis.

A spatio-temporal modelling approach for the study of the connectivity and accessibility of the Guangzhou metropolitan network

The urban growth of large cities in China is at a critical stage with the booming of the economy and impressive increase of the population and traffic demand. This paper studies and qualifies the growth and accessibility of a rapid rail transit network, and characterizes the relations with urban development using a spatio-temporal modelling approach. Several measures of the network topological structure, i.e., beta index (β), cyclomatic number (μ), alpha index (α) and gamma index (γ), are selected in order to examine and quantify the overall metro network growth of the city of Guangzhou in China. The results show that the current spatial connectivity of the Guangzhou’s metro network is relatively low, this stressing the need to augment thereliability ofthe connections between the network nodes, and to increase the number of circuits in the network. A travel-time matrix is modelled and evaluates the nodes accessibility and characterizes the spatio-temporal evolution of the metro network. The spatial interaction between the different nodes of the network, as well as nodes accessibility are analyzed and derived from a potential-based model. The extension of the metro network clearly shows a dramatic tendency of positive accessibility evolution but with regional differences. In particular, the core of the city is surrounded by areas with highest accessibility values and gradually expanding outward from the core, while the locations of transfer stations have significant influence on the variation of network time-based accessibility. Taking into account different network development scenarios, the approach reveals regional accessibility differences in the metropolitan area of the city of Guangzhou, this clearly illustrating the impact of network accessibility in urban development.

The design of interurban bus networks in city centers

This paper proposes a bilevel formulation for solving the Bus Network Design Problem (BNDP) of interurban services entering a major city. It is focused in interurban services because it is a growing problem in most of major cities, yet new in the literature. The layout of interurban bus routes and the locations of transfer stations in the main city are the key factors to provide a competitive public transportation service to commuters in a metropolitan area. The number of commuters in huge urban concentrations is growing due to the difficulties of living near the city center. The objective function of the first level is defined with the aim of reducing user and agency costs. In the second level the performance of users is addressed. Furthermore, a local search method based on the Tabu Search algorithm was carried out to guide the exploration in the solution domain. The results obtained in a set of test problems have demonstrated that the restart parameters of the algorithm play a significant role in the efficiency of the algorithm. Finally, implementation in the large network of Barcelona (Spain) reduces the total cost by 5% with regard to the present situation.

Integrated assessment of a new Waste-to-Energy facility in Central Greece in the context of regional perspectives

The main aim of this study is the integrated assessment of a proposed Waste-to-Energy facility that could contribute in the Municipal Solid Waste Management system of the Region of Central Greece. In the context of this paper alternative transfer schemes for supplying the candidate facility were assessed considering local conditions and economical criteria. A mixed-integer linear programming model was applied for the determination of optimum locations of Transfer Stations for an efficient supplying chain between the waste producers and the Waste-to-Energy facility. Moreover different Regional Waste Management Scenarios were assessed against multiple criteria, via the Multi Criteria Decision Making method ELECTRE III. The chosen criteria were total cost, Biodegradable Municipal Waste diversion from landfill, energy recovery and Greenhouse Gas emissions and the analysis demonstrated that a Waste Management Scenario based on a Waste-to-Energy plant with an adjacent landfill for disposal of the residues would be the best performing option for the Region, depending however on the priorities of the decision makers. In addition the study demonstrated that efficient planning is necessary and the case of three sanitary landfills operating in parallel with the WtE plant in the study area should be avoided. Moreover alternative cases of energy recovery of the candidate Waste-to-Energy facility were evaluated against the requirements of the new European Commission Directive on waste in order for the facility to be recognized as recovery operation. The latter issue is of high significance and the decision makers in European Union countries should take it into account from now on, in order to plan and implement facilities that recover energy efficiently. Finally a sensitivity check was performed in order to evaluate the effects of increased recycling rate, on the calorific value of treated Municipal Solid Waste and the gate fee of the candidate plant and found that increased recycling efforts would not diminish the potential for incineration with energy recovery from waste and neither would have adverse impacts on the gate fee of the Waste-to-Energy plant. In general, the study highlighted the need for efficient planning in solid waste management, by taking into account multiple criteria and parameters and utilizing relevant tools and methodologies into this context.
