A number of position based routing algorithms for mobile ad hoc networks have been proposed in the literature. These algorithms have been tested either in proactive or reactive environment. In this paper we have evaluated the performance of VD-GEDIR, CH-MFR, R-DIR, DREAM and LAR under both proactive and reactive routing approaches using different location update schemes. In proactive approach the location of a moving node is updated independent of routing process i.e. based on regular time interval and based on number of links formed and broken while in reactive approach the locations updates are integrated with route discovery process. Through the simulation results we found that VD-GEDIR, CH-MFR, and R-DIR have performed better than DREAM and LAR under all the location update schemes applied in this work.
