A LTHOUGH a number of studies have been published on the mortality rate among grocery retailers, little material has been made available on the turnover rate among grocery wholesalers.' This article presents the results of a study of mortality rates among Seattle general-line grocery wholesalers for the period 1893-1951. This period covers the years during which local general-line grocery wholesalers have been of major importance in Seattle. Before 1893 the wholesale distribution of groceries in the Seattle market was performed mainly by general-merchandise wholesalers, semi-jobbers, and San Francisco and Portland merchants.
