Understanding X-ray absorption in liquid water using triple excitations in multilevel coupled cluster theory

X-ray absorption (XA) spectroscopy is an essential experimental tool to investigate the local structure of liquid water. Interpretation of the experiment poses a significant challenge and requires a quantitative theoretical description. High-quality theoretical XA spectra require reliable molecular dynamics simulations and accurate electronic structure calculations. Here, we present the first successful application of coupled cluster theory to model the XA spectrum of liquid water. We overcome the computational limitations on system size by employing a multilevel coupled cluster framework for large molecular systems. Excellent agreement with the experimental spectrum is achieved by including triple excitations in the wave function and using molecular structures from state-of-the-art path-integral molecular dynamics. We demonstrate that an accurate description of the electronic structure within the first solvation shell is sufficient to successfully model the XA spectrum of liquid water within the multilevel framework. Furthermore, we present a rigorous charge transfer analysis of the XA spectrum, which is reliable due to the accuracy and robustness of the electronic structure methodology. This analysis aligns with previous studies regarding the character of the prominent features of the XA spectrum of liquid water.

Anomalies and Local Structure of Liquid Water from Boiling to the Supercooled Regime as Predicted by the Many-Body MB-pol Model.

For the past 50 years, researchers have sought molecular models that can accurately reproduce water's microscopic structure and thermophysical properties across broad ranges of its complex phase diagram. Herein, molecular dynamics simulations with the many-body MB-pol model are performed to monitor the thermodynamic response functions and local structure of liquid water from the boiling point down to deeply supercooled temperatures at ambient pressure. The isothermal compressibility and isobaric heat capacity show maxima near 223 K, in excellent agreement with recent experiments, and the liquid density exhibits a minimum at ∼208 K. A local tetrahedral arrangement, where each water molecule accepts and donates two hydrogen bonds, is found to be the most probable hydrogen-bonding topology at all temperatures. This work suggests that MB-pol may provide predictive capability for studies of liquid water's physical properties across broad ranges of thermodynamic states, including the so-called water's "no man's land" which is difficult to probe experimentally.

Relationship between Hydrogen-Bonding Motifs and the 1b1 Splitting in the X-ray Emission Spectrum of Liquid Water.

The split of the 1b1 peak observed in the X-ray emission (XE) spectrum of liquid water has been the focus of intense research. Although several hypotheses have been proposed to explain the origin of this split, a consensus has not yet been reached. Here, we introduce a novel theoretical/computation approach which, combining path-integral molecular dynamics simulations with the MB-pol model and time-dependent density functional theory calculations, predicts the 1b1 splitting in liquid water and not in crystalline ice, in agreement with the experimental observations. A systematic analysis of the underlying local structure of liquid water at ambient conditions indicates that several different hydrogen-bonding motifs contribute to the overall XE line shape in the energy range corresponding to emissions from the 1b1 orbitals. This suggests that it is not possible to unambiguously attribute the split of the 1b1 peak to only two specific structural arrangements of the underlying hydrogen-bonding network.

Characterization of water structure in carbon nanotubes by various order parameters

Various order parameters have been suggested to characterize the local structure of liquid water in bulk. Characterization the local structure of water molecules in the confined systems by various order parameters is important but still unclear. In this work, a series of popular order parameters are used to analyze the local structure of water molecules in carbon nanotubes (CNTs) by molecular dynamics simulation. Based on the value of order parameters, the different structures of water molecules in CNTs and in bulk were discussed. The orientational tetrahedral order (q) and translational tetrahedral order (Sk) are much better than local structure index (LSI) to describe the local structure of water in CNTs. We also demonstrated that the local structure of water molecules in the CNT(40,40) is almost the same with that in bulk. The findings could give us a guideline to investigate the water molecules in confined system.

We employ multiple order parameters to analyze the local structure of liquid water obtained from all-atom simulations, and accordingly identify three types of molecules in water. In addition to the well-known low-density-liquid and high-density-liquid molecules, the newly identified third type possesses an ultra-high density and over-coordinated H-bonds. The existence of this third type decreases the probability of transition of high-density-liquid molecules to low-density-liquid molecules and increases the probability of the reverse one.

Low-order many-body interactions determine the local structure of liquid water.

Despite its apparent simplicity, water displays unique behavior across the phase diagram which is strictly related to the ability of the water molecules to form dense, yet dynamic, hydrogen-bond networks that continually fluctuate in time and space. The competition between different local hydrogen-bonding environments has been hypothesized as a possible origin of the anomalous properties of liquid water. Through a systematic application of the many-body expansion of the total energy, we demonstrate that the local structure of liquid water at room temperature is determined by a delicate balance between two-body and three-body energies, which is further modulated by higher-order many-body effects. Besides providing fundamental insights into the structure of liquid water, this analysis also emphasizes that a correct representation of two-body and three-body energies requires sub-chemical accuracy that is nowadays only achieved by many-body models rigorously derived from the many-body expansion of the total energy, which thus hold great promise for shedding light on the molecular origin of the anomalous behavior of liquid water.

The multiple local structures in liquid water

The debate over whether the structure of liquid water is homogeneous or mixed with a variety of structures has been going on for more than one century. With the discovery of different amorphous ices and advances in computer technology, mixture model is gaining more and more attention. In this paper, the latest progress in the experiment and simulation of the local structure of liquid water is introduced firstly. Secondly, the principal component analysis is used to study the water’s Raman spectra and tetrahedral-order distributions. We find that both the spectra and distributions can be obtained by linear superposition of two basic functions, which correspond to the existence of two local structures in liquid water. Finally, we introduce the development of using the binary regular solution theory to explain some thermodynamic properties of liquid water.

The hydrogen-bond network of water supports propagating optical phonon-like modes.

The local structure of liquid water as a function of temperature is a source of intense research. This structure is intimately linked to the dynamics of water molecules, which can be measured using Raman and infrared spectroscopies. The assignment of spectral peaks depends on whether they are collective modes or single-molecule motions. Vibrational modes in liquids are usually considered to be associated to the motions of single molecules or small clusters. Using molecular dynamics simulations, here we find dispersive optical phonon-like modes in the librational and OH-stretching bands. We argue that on subpicosecond time scales these modes propagate through water's hydrogen-bond network over distances of up to 2 nm. In the long wavelength limit these optical modes exhibit longitudinal–transverse splitting, indicating the presence of coherent long-range dipole–dipole interactions, as in ice. Our results indicate the dynamics of liquid water have more similarities to ice than previously thought.

Characterization of the Local Structure in Liquid Water by Various Order Parameters.

A wide range of geometric order parameters have been suggested to characterize the local structure of liquid water and its tetrahedral arrangement, but their respective merits have remained elusive. Here, we consider a series of popular order parameters and analyze molecular dynamics simulations of water, in the bulk and in the hydration shell of a hydrophobic solute, at 298 and 260 K. We show that these parameters are weakly correlated and probe different distortions, for example the angular versus radial disorders. We first combine these complementary descriptions to analyze the structural rearrangements leading to the density maximum in liquid water. Our results reveal no sign of a heterogeneous mixture and show that the density maximum arises from the depletion in interstitial water molecules upon cooling. In the hydration shell of the hydrophobic moiety of propanol, the order parameters suggest that the water local structure is similar to that in the bulk, with only a very weak depletion in ordered configurations, thus confirming the absence of any iceberg-type structure. Finally, we show that the main structural fluctuations that affect water reorientation dynamics in the bulk are angular distortions, which we explain by the jump hydrogen-bond exchange mechanism.

Interplay between Microscopic Diffusion and Local Structure of Liquid Water

We present a quasielastic neutron scattering (QENS) study of single-particle dynamics in pure water, measured at temperatures between 256 and 293 K along an isobaric path at 200 MPa. A thorough analysis of the spectral line shapes reveals a departure from simple models of continuous or jump diffusion, with such an effect becoming stronger at lower temperatures. We show that such a diverging trend of dynamical quantities upon cooling closely resembles the divergent (anomalous) compressibility observed in water by small-angle diffraction. Such an analogy suggests an interesting interplay between single-particle diffusion and structural arrangements in liquid water, both bearing witness of the well-known water anomalies. In particular, a fit of dynamical parameters by a Vogel-Tammann-Fulcher law provides a critical temperature of about 220 K, interestingly close to the hypothesized position of the second critical point of water and to the so-called Widom line.

Properties of liquid water from a systematic refinement of a high-rank multipolar electrostatic potential

We build on previous work [S. Y. Liem and P. L. A. Popelier, J. Chem. Theory Comput. 4, 353 (2008)], where for the first time, a high-rank multipolar electrostatic potential was used in molecular dynamics simulations of liquid water at a wide range of pressures and temperatures, and using a multipolar Ewald summation. Water is represented as a rigid body, with atomic multipole moments defined by quantum chemical topology partitioning its gas phase electron density. The effect of the level of theory on the local structure of liquid water is systematically addressed. Values for Lennard-Jones (LJ) parameters are optimized, for both oxygen and hydrogen atoms, against bulk properties. The best LJ parameters were then used in a set of simulations at 30 different temperatures (1 atm) and another set at 11 different pressures (at 298 K). Inclusion of the hydrogen LJ parameters significantly increases the self-diffusion coefficient. The behavior of bulk properties was studied and the local water structure analyzed by both radial and spatial distribution functions. Comparisons with familiar point-charge potentials, such as TIP3P, TIP4P, TIP5P, and simple point charge, show the benefits of multipole moments.

Variations of water's local-structure induced by solvation of NaCl

The researches on the structure of water and its changes induced by solutes are of enduring interests. The changes of the local structure of liquid water induced by NaCl solute under ambient conditions are studied and presented quantitatively with some order parameters and visualized with 2-body and 3-body correlation functions. The results show that, after the NaCl are solvated, the translational order t of water is decreased for the suppression of the second hydration shells around H2O molecules; the tetrahedral order (q) of water is also decreased and its favorite distribution peak moves from 0.76 to 0.5. In addition, the orientational freedom k and the diffusion coefficient D of water molecules are reduced because of new formed hydrogen-bonding structures between water and solvated ions.

Hydrogen-bond network and local structure of liquid water: An atoms-in-molecules perspective

The nearly linear relationship between hydrogen-bond strength at the CCSD(T)/Aug-cc-pVTZ level and the electron density at the bond critical point in the atoms-in-molecules theory provides a practical means of calculating the hydrogen-bond strength in liquid water. A statistical analysis of the hydrogen-bonds obtained from Car-Parrinello molecular dynamics simulations shows that the strengths of hydrogen bonds in liquid water conform to a Gaussian distribution. Considering supercooled (250 K) water to have a fully coordinated (icelike) local tetrahedral configuration, we show that the local structure of liquid water is partly distorted tetrahedral in normal liquid water and even in superheated water.

In situ Brillouin scattering study of water in high pressure and high temperatureconditions

Experimental studies of liquid water are of particular interest because of the unusualbehavior of most of its physical properties. The in situ high pressure and high temperatureBrillouin scattering technique has been used to examine the sound velocity and elasticproperties of water; we present experimental data for the velocities of liquid water underthese conditions. The velocity dispersion with pressure and temperature is presented;besides the discontinuous behavior in density dependence of the elastic constantbelow 353 K revealed before, which was located at the domain where the lowdensity water transforms to the high density water, the pressure evolution ofvelocity at higher temperatures above 453 K also exhibits different change behaviorsduring compression; a velocity descent with increasing temperature at pressuresbelow about 2.0 GPa was observed, but no obvious drop was seen in the higherpressure region. The elastic constants were calculated based on the velocities and asimilar trend of changes with pressure was found. The temperature dependences ofvelocities measured along the quasi-isobaric lines give a consistent result. Withanalysis of the local structure of liquid water, it is suggested that these observationsdenote a reflection of the density changes which are induced by hydrogen bondingconfiguration modifications under high pressure and high temperature conditions. Wediscuss details of the experimental observations and analyze the mysterious physicalproperties of liquid water, combining other experiments and theory calculations.

Isotope effects in liquid water probed by x-ray Raman spectroscopy

The isotope effect on the local structure of liquid water at room temperature is studied by x-ray Raman spectroscopy. The difference between the room-temperature spectra of liquid ${\mathrm{H}}_{2}\mathrm{O}$ and ${\mathrm{D}}_{2}\mathrm{O}$ is compared to the difference spectrum between liquid ${\mathrm{H}}_{2}\mathrm{O}$ at 22 and $2\phantom{\rule{0.2em}{0ex}}\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{}\mathrm{C}$. The spectral changes between ${\mathrm{H}}_{2}\mathrm{O}$ and ${\mathrm{D}}_{2}\mathrm{O}$ can partly be attributed to structural changes similar to a temperature change, in agreement with diffraction data. Additionally, we find that isotope substitution affects the local asymmetry in the hydrogen-bonded network: hydrogen-bonding configurations are more asymmetric on the donor side for ${\mathrm{H}}_{2}\mathrm{O}$ than for ${\mathrm{D}}_{2}\mathrm{O}$. A cluster model is used to computationally illustrate the spectral changes that arise due to the increased asymmetry, capturing all essential features in the difference spectrum. We infer from our study that quantum effects contribute to the formation of asymmetrical species in the liquid.

Probing the Local Structure of Liquid Water by X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy†

It was recently suggested that liquid water primarily comprises hydrogen-bonded rings and chains, as opposed to the traditionally accepted locally tetrahedral structure (Wernet et al. Science 2004, 304, 995). This controversial conclusion was primarily based on comparison between experimental and calculated X-ray absorption spectra (XAS) using computer-generated ice-like 11-molecule clusters. Here we present calculations which conclusively show that when hydrogen-bonding configurations are chosen randomly, the calculated XAS does not reproduce the experimental XAS regardless of the bonding model employed (i.e., rings and chains vs tetrahedral). Furthermore, we also present an analysis of a recently introduced asymmetric water potential (Soper, A. K. J. Phys.: Condens. Matter 2005, 17, S3273), which is representative of the rings and chains structure, and make comparisons with the standard SPC/E potential, which represents the locally tetrahedral structure. We find that the calculated XAS from both potentials is inconsistent with the experimental XAS. However, we also show the calculated electric field distribution from the rings and chains structure is strongly bimodal and highly inconsistent with the experimental Raman spectrum, thus casting serious doubt on the validity of the rings and chains model for liquid water.

X-ray absorption spectrum of liquid water from molecular dynamics simulations: Asymmetric model

We address the question of the local structure in liquid water by computing the x-ray absorption (XA) spectrum explicitly averaging over configurations from classical and Car-Parrinello molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. We confirm the prediction by Wernet et al. [Science 304, 995 (2004)] that the resulting spectra are not representative for liquid water due to a too large fraction of molecules with two donating hydrogen bonds. The H-bond criterion given by Wernet et al. is, however, not sufficient to predict the XA spectrum for general structures from MD simulations. Only by selecting specific single-donor MD configurations is it possible to represent the liquid water spectrum; this results in an improved and more restrictive geometrical connection between local structure and spectral features in the simulation. The configurations, with one strong and one weak donating hydrogen bond, need to be even more asymmetric than previously assumed. This bonding situation is strongly underrepresented in the simulations.

Hydrogen bonds in liquid water are broken only fleetingly.

Although it is widely accepted that the local structure of liquid water has tetrahedral arrangements of molecules ordered by hydrogen bonds, the mechanism by which water molecules switch hydrogen-bonded partners remains unclear. In this mechanism, the role of nonhydrogen-bonded configurations (NHBs) between adjacent molecules is of particular importance. A molecule may switch hydrogen-bonding partners either (i) through thermally activated breaking of a hydrogen bond that creates a dangling hydrogen bond before finding a new partner or (ii) by infrequent but rapid switching events in which the NHB is a transition state. Here, we report a combination of femtosecond 2D IR spectroscopy and molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the stability of NHB species in an isotopically dilute mixture of HOD in D2O. Measured 2D IR spectra reveal that hydrogen-bonded configurations and NHBs undergo qualitatively different relaxation dynamics, with NHBs returning to hydrogen-bonded frequencies on the time scale of water's fastest intermolecular motions. Simulations of an atomistic model for the OH vibrational spectroscopy of water yield qualitatively similar 2D IR spectra to those measured experimentally. Analysis of NHBs in simulations by quenching demonstrates that the vast majority of NHBs are in fact part of a hydrogen-bonded well of attraction and that virtually all molecules return to a hydrogen-bonding partner within 200 fs. The results from experiment and simulation demonstrate that NHBs are intrinsically unstable and that dangling hydrogen bonds are an insignificant species in liquid water.

The relationship between dynamics and structure in the far infrared absorption spectrum of liquid water

Using an intense source of far infrared radiation, the absorption spectrum of liquid water is measured at a temperature ranging from 269 to 323 K. In the infrared spectrum we observe modes that are related to the local structure of liquid water. Here we present a FIR measured spectrum that is sensitive to the low frequency (<100 cm −1) microscopic details that exist in liquid water.

Low-frequency Raman study of water isotopes

Depolarized low-frequency Raman spectra of H 2 O, D 2 O, H 2 18 O , and D 2 18 O are measured from 266 to 350 K. The reduced Raman spectra below 250 cm −1 are reproduced by a superposition of one relaxation mode and two damped harmonic oscillators. The multiple random telegraph model, which takes into account the inertia and memory effects is applied to analyze the central relaxation component. The 180 cm −1 mode corresponds to vibration of the oxygen atom. The hydrogen isotopes affect the relaxation time causing its variation. The relaxation time is considered to correspond to the duration of fluctuation of the local structure in liquid water. The intensity of the 50 cm −1 mode decreases with increasing temperature and finally vanishes above about 300–310 K. The 50 cm −1 mode can be distinguished from the relaxation mode when the relaxation time is more than five times longer than the period of the 50 cm −1 vibration mode.
