This study is an analysis of an extension project in rural areas developed by the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte. The case study is in the municipality of Vera Cruz/ RN, where rural tourism emerges as a tool to supplement the income of peasant. This study aims to propose a reflection about how the community is participating in this new activity hitherto unknown, and her perception in developing this project. The data collection was done through literature sources and field research, primarily qualitative. It analyzed the local population, the municipal authorities and the coordinator of the extension project. The results obtained in the field, showed that a portion of the community is already reaping the benefits of rural tourism, but it requires the participation of municipal government for planning and the expected outcome for the project. However the initiatives of institutions such as UFRN are important since there is participation and involvement of all local social actors.
