Several methods of choosing a local geodetic datum, based on astrogeodetic deflections of the vertical, are presented. The results of applying these methods to a test network covering about 200 000 square kilometres in western New South Wales, containing sufficient astronomical stations for reliable astrogeodetic levelling, are computed and compared.
