The 2024 Jakarta Governor and Deputy Governor Election served as a critical stage for the Ridwan Kamil and Suswono duo, supported by major political parties through the Koalisi Indonesia Maju (KIM) Plus coalition. Despite broad political backing and leveraging communication strategies across social media, traditional media, and grassroots engagement, the pair failed to secure victory. This study examines their political communication strategies, including media utilization, public response, and challenges faced, such as negative perceptions due to past scandals, black campaigns, and local resistance to their identity. Using a qualitative descriptive approach based on desk reviews, the study finds that while Ridwan Kamil-Suswono managed to capture public attention with flagship programs like Kartu Jakarta Maju and Riverway, obstacles such as smear campaigns and misalignment with Jakarta's local culture were key factors in their defeat. The findings highlight the importance of synergy between political communication strategies, understanding local community characteristics, and effective image management in winning political contests.

Transforming Hotel Lobbies via Community-Centered Design: Crafting a Vibrant Social Hub for Guests

Recent trends in hotel design shift lobbies from their traditional check-in and check-out functions towards a vision of lobbies as vibrant social hubs. This study explores guests’ preferred hotel lobby designs using choice-based conjoint analysis, focusing on elements that integrate local community characteristics through visual, functional, and activity design. Our findings demonstrate how these preferred design elements contribute to a sense of place and community among both local and non-local guests. Furthermore, the study reveals that combining various design elements creates synergistic effects, enhancing their impact on guests’ sense of place and community. These insights highlight the importance of community-centered integration in hotel design, offering a theoretical framework that bridges the gap between design attributes and guest well-being. This study also provides practical guidelines for creating sustainable and inclusive hotel environments.

Revitalization of thematic villages through red ginger cultivation in Mulyorejo Village, Malang City

The Covid-19 pandemic has significantly impacted society, causing an economic crisis. The thematic village program is a community empowerment effort based on the unique potential characteristics of local communities. This community service program aims to strengthen the concept of thematic villages through the revitalization of the Ginger Red Thematic Village in RW 07, located in Mulyorejo Village, Sukun District, Malang City. The methods applied include outreach, assistance, and improvement of urban farming facilities for red ginger cultivation. The results of this community service program show that the revitalization of the Red Ginger Thematic Village has succeeded in increasing the function of the greenhouse, supporting the urban farming program, and increasing the number of successfully cultivated red ginger plants by the local community. This program represents a significant step in supporting economic recovery and community empowerment amidst the crisis caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Public Health Nurses' Proficiencies and Training Needs in an Emergency Response: A Cross-Sectional Observational Study.

To address gaps in understanding the public health nursing workforce regarding competencies recognized as critical during an emergency response. A cross-sectional observational study using data with information on local health department staff- and organizational-level characteristics collected from across the United States in 2021. We used logistic regression to estimate the association between 2 binary nurse-specific predictors-(1) whether the staff person was a nurse and (2) whether the staff worked in a local health department that was "nurse-led" (directed by a nurse)-and reported proficiencies important to the COVID-19 response. Models controlled for relevant local health department and community characteristics. In the sample, 19% were nurses and 37% were at nurse-led health departments. Nurse versus nonnurse staff had higher odds of reporting proficiencies in skills related to Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion and in the skill "identifying/applying evidence-based approaches to address public health issues." However, nurses, compared with their nonnurse peers, had higher odds of reporting training needs in domains related to community engagement, policy engagement, and cross-sectoral collaboration. Conversely, staff at nurse-led health departments, compared with non-nurse-led staff, had higher odds of reporting proficiencies in many of these same areas, including "collaborating across the public health system" and "influencing policies external to the organization that affect community health." There were no areas in which nurse-led staff had lower odds of reporting proficiencies or higher odds of identifying training needs. Findings from this study highlight areas of strength for public health nurses, particularly strengths related to diversity, equity, and inclusion, as well as areas where more training is needed. Such findings can help guide future public health nurse workforce development as well as underscore the value of public health nursing leadership and staff at local health departments for supporting community health.

AbstractFactors shaping arthropod and plant community structure at fine spatial scales are poorly understood. This includes microclimate, which likely plays a large role in shaping local community patterns, especially in heterogeneous landscapes characterised by high microclimatic variability in space and in time.We explored differences in local microclimatic conditions and regional species pools in two subarctic regions: Kilpisjärvi in north‐west Finland and Varanger in north‐east Norway. We then investigated the relationship between fine‐scale climatic variation and local community characteristics (species richness and abundance) among plants and arthropods, differentiating the latter into two groups: flying and ground‐dwelling arthropods collected by Malaise and pitfall traps, respectively. Arthropod taxa were identified through DNA metabarcoding. Finally, we examined if plant richness can be used to predict patterns in arthropod communities.Variation in soil temperature, moisture and snow depth proved similar between regions, despite differences in absolute elevation. For each group of organisms, we found that about half of the species were shared between Kilpisjärvi and Varanger, with a quarter unique to each region.Plants and arthropods responded largely to the same drivers. The richness and abundance of both groups decreased as elevation increased and were positively correlated with higher soil moisture and temperature values. Plant species richness was a poor predictor of local arthropod richness, in particular for ground‐dwelling arthropods.Our results reveal how microclimatic variation within each region carves pronounced, yet consistent patterns in local community richness and abundance out of a joint species pool.

Exploration of spatiotemporal heterogeneity and socio-demographic determinants on COVID-19 incidence rates in Sarawak, Malaysia

BackgroundIn Sarawak, 252 300 coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) cases have been recorded with 1 619 fatalities in 2021, compared to only 1 117 cases in 2020. Since Sarawak is geographically separated from Peninsular Malaysia and half of its population resides in rural districts where medical resources are limited, the analysis of spatiotemporal heterogeneity of disease incidence rates and their relationship with socio-demographic factors are crucial in understanding the spread of the disease in Sarawak.MethodsThe spatial dependence of district-wise incidence rates is investigated using spatial autocorrelation analysis with two orders of contiguity weights for various pandemic waves. Nine determinants are chosen from 14 covariates of socio-demographic factors via elastic net regression and recursive partitioning. The relationships between incidence rates and socio-demographic factors are examined using ordinary least squares, spatial lag and spatial error models, and geographically weighted regression.ResultsIn the first 8 months of 2021, COVID-19 severely affected Sarawak’s central region, which was followed by the southern region in the next 2 months. In the third wave, based on second-order spatial weights, the incidence rate in a district is most strongly influenced by its neighboring districts’ rate, although the variance of incidence rates is best explained by local regression coefficient estimates of socio-demographic factors in the first wave. It is discovered that the percentage of households with garbage collection facilities, population density and the proportion of male in the population are positively associated with the increase in COVID-19 incidence rates.ConclusionThis research provides useful insights for the State Government and public health authorities to critically incorporate socio-demographic characteristics of local communities into evidence-based decision-making for altering disease monitoring and response plans. Policymakers can make well-informed judgments and implement targeted interventions by having an in-depth understanding of the spatial patterns and relationships between COVID-19 incidence rates and socio-demographic characteristics. This will effectively help in mitigating the spread of the disease.

Relationship between Submerged Marine Debris and Macrobenthic Fauna in Jeju Island, South Korea

Pollution associated with marine debris is of global ecological concern, as it threatens wildlife and local economies. Submerged marine debris alters local benthic species composition and community characteristics. The study site of Jaguri, Jeju Island, where a variety of submerged marine debris was found, was used to investigate the impact of submerged marine debris on the macrobenthic fauna of sandy and rocky substrates. The dominant macrobenthos taxon differed by sediment type; the polychaete Armandia lanceolata was dominant in sandy bottom environments and the mollusk Leiosolenus lischkei was dominant in rocky bottom environments. The presence of marine debris was associated with differences in biomass in both the soft and rocky areas. The site without debris had higher biomass in the soft area, and the site with nets had a higher density of benthic animals within the site with debris. In the rocky area. the site with debris had a higher biomass. Macrobenthos were affected by the type of deposited marine debris and the type of sediment substrate. This study provides a basis for future studies on the impact of debris on marine ecosystems and identified the benthos species affected by marine debris.

Impacts of the COVID‐19 pandemic on ethnically diverse communities

AbstractEthnically diverse communities are potentially exposed to multiple and compounding impacts of COVID‐19, owing to social and cultural interactions, household crowding, employment in exposed occupations and other socioeconomic conditions. In this study, we quantify and analyse these impacts for local councils in Australia's two largest cities, Sydney and Melbourne across five outcomes: infections, excess deaths, the speed of vaccination, unemployment and breaches of public health orders issued by the Police. Residents of the most linguistically diverse councils in Sydney were 5.6 times more likely to have contracted COVID‐19 up to 1 December 2021 than residents of the least diverse councils and 2.9 times more likely in the most diverse councils in Melbourne. Excess deaths were 27% higher in diverse communities across 2020 and 2021, the time spent unvaccinated was 1.3 times higher and the increase in the unemployment rate was between 1.7 and 5.1 times higher depending on the city. Public health breaches were 2.2 times higher in the most diverse areas of Sydney. Spatial regression models indicate that the differences in infections, excess deaths, speed of vaccination and public health breaches are largely explained by the economic characteristics of local communities. These disproportionate impacts appear to reflect and reinforce social and economic inequalities and pose a threat to social cohesion.

Just street trees? Street trees increase local biodiversity and biomass in higher income, denser neighborhoods

AbstractTree canopy cover is a critical component of the urban environment that supports ecosystem services at multiple spatial and temporal scales. Increasing tree canopy across a matrix of public and private land is challenging. As such, municipalities often plant trees along streets in public rights‐of‐way where there are fewer barriers to establishment, and composition and biomass of street trees are inextricably linked to human decisions, management, and care. In this study, we investigated the contributions of street trees to the broader urban forest, inclusive of tree canopy distributed across both public and private parcels in Baltimore, MD, USA. We assess how species composition, biodiversity, and biomass of street trees specifically augment the urban forest at local and citywide scales. Furthermore, we evaluate how street tree contributions to the urban forest vary with social and demographic characteristics of local residential communities. Our analyses demonstrate that street trees significantly enhanced citywide metrics of the urban forests' richness and tree biomass, adding an average six unique species per site. However, street tree contributions did not ameliorate low tree canopy locations, and more street tree biomass was generally aligned with higher urban forest cover. Furthermore, species richness, abundance, and biomass added by street trees were all positively related to local household income and population density. Our results corroborate previous findings that wealthier urban neighborhoods often have greater tree abundance and canopy cover and, additionally, suggest that investment in municipally managed street trees may be reinforcing inequities in distribution and function of the urban forest. This suggests a need for greater attention to where and why street tree plantings occur, what species are selected, and how planted tree survival is maintained by and for residents in different neighborhoods.

Clean energy justice: Different adoption characteristics of underserved communities in rooftop solar and electric vehicle chargers in Seattle

Concerns over global climate change have led to energy transition to clean energy systems with the development of various clean energy policies. However, social equity issues have emerged in association with the rapid transition of energy systems related to distributed energy resources (DERs), evidenced by disparities in clean energy access. While most existing studies have focused on several variables impacting the adoption of DERs, there is a dearth of studies concerning distributional and recognition justice specifically aimed at investigating: (1) which DER adoption variable is the most important among several variables identified in the literature; and (2) how adoption patterns vary by technologies and communities. The objective of the present study is to answer the two questions by examining the geographic distribution of rooftop solar and electric vehicle (EV) chargers and the related community attributes. Also, the study involves identifying latent variables by addressing inter-correlations among several adoption determinants. The results show that rooftop solar and EV charger adoptions in Seattle present disparities associated with geographic locations and community attributes. In particular, housing variables are the main indicators for rooftop solar adoption and even stronger in communities with low adoption rates. EV charger adoptions are strongly associated with economic variables. Furthermore, spatial inequality of rooftop solar adoption is higher than that of EV charger adoption. The study suggests housing-related support may increase the adoption of both technologies, particularly in communities with low adoption rates. Considering that the installations of rooftop solar and EV chargers were concentrated in particular communities, the study results imply that policies aimed at increasing the adoption of DERs should be tailored to local community characteristics.

Community-Scale Spatial Mapping to Prioritize Green and Grey Infrastructure Locations to Increase Flood Resilience

ABSTRACT With increasing investment in infrastructure to address flooding, including green and grey solutions, there are challenges in selecting the type and location of infrastructure. This paper proposes a method to prioritize locations for stormwater infrastructure. Compared to prior work, it considers both green and grey infrastructure and enables detailed spatial analysis of a community. It uses quantitative measures and includes the multiple potential benefits of green versus grey infrastructure. The method is applied to the coastal county of Chatham County, GA, USA. Results show how the methodology is used to select green or grey infrastructure solutions and highlight locations that should be prioritized for infrastructure investment. Analyses accounting for uncertainties in future climate projections and population estimates are also conducted. The method includes local community characteristics, results in clear placement locations, and with decision-maker input, enables solutions to be adapted as stakeholder priorities evolve to increase community flood resilience.

The authors consider main reasons for the Anabaptist movement to the mountainous regions of the North Caucasus in the second half of the 19th - early 20th century. Special attention is given to the “Statute on the Colonies of foreigners in the Empire”, published in 1857, which provided not only benefits and privileges, but also the duties of colonists. The article is devoted to the study of the economic sphere of Mennonites, taking into account the local conditions of mountainous areas, their huge contribution to the improvement of socio-economic reforms of the region, identifying the adaptation peculiarities of settlers to the religious characteristics of local communities.

The role of ecotourism in developing local communities in Indonesia

ABSTRACT Ecotourism has evolved into a strategy for establishing sustainable livelihoods and plays a vital role in the management of local communities. It confronts numerous difficulties despite appearing to be the ideal tool for enhancing socio-economic development. This study examined how ecotourism helps local communities thrive through a case study of a tourist village in Wringinputih, Borobudur, Central Java, Indonesia. A series of observations and interviews were conducted to learn more about the ecotourism of rural development. The results showed two opposing views on the importance of the concept. It considerably improves perceptions of openness, ties-based local communities and resource preservation. On the other side, there are considerable obstacles to the tourist village’s effective sustainability, including corruption, local disbelief in the government, and a lack of ecotourism in planning initiatives. Recommendations are made on how the development programme can offer a sharp analysis to comprehend the characteristics of local communities in the planning and management process.

CONDITION AND DEVELOPMENT OF UNPLANNED TOURISM BUSINESS IN TASIKMALAYA DISTRICT

Tourism activities in Tasikmalaya Regency were recorded to experience fluctuations in the number of tourist visits from year to year. There are two classifications of tourist objects in Tasikmayala Regency, namely legal and registered tourist objects and tourist objects that are not legal and not yet registered in the Disparpora Tasikmalaya Regency and the Disparbud of West Java Province. Tourism objects that are not yet legal, have not been recorded, grow from the initiative of tourists or the community, and are not yet well established in their management are referred to as unplanned tourism businesses. The study was conducted to describe the conditions and developments in the unplanned tourism business carried out in three locations, namely Pasir Kirisik, Bukit Panyangrayan, and Bukit Puji Ningrum by conducting direct observations, interviews, and questionnaires. All data collected were then analyzed descriptively covering the general condition of the research location, characteristics of tourists and local communities, perceptions, motivations, preferences, participation, and conditions of business development factors in each research location. The condition of the unplanned tourism business shows that it is running well even though it has not run optimally and is accepted by tourists and the local community. So it is important the role of stakeholders according to their capacity and capability as part of the support system for procedural acceleration of an unplanned tourism business into an established ecotourism business.

Interrogating the Importance of Collective Resources for the Relationship of Gentrification With Health

The relationship of neighborhood conditions with health outcomes has been well documented, but less is known about importance of neighborhood change. Research that examined the relationship of gentrification with health outcomes produced mixed results, but only a few studies were able to examine the role of local social capital as a potential moderating influence. Using a survey of Hurricane Katrina survivors, tract-level health estimates from the 500 Cities Project, and tract-level census data, we assess the relationship of gentrification with self-reported physical and mental health, controlling for four measures of neighborhood collective resources in post-Katrina New Orleans, Louisiana. Our findings indicate rates of poor self-rated physical and mental health were higher in neighborhoods that experienced gentrification and that other neighborhood changes may function to dampen the impacts of gentrification on health outcomes. Our results underscore the importance of considering local community characteristics in evaluating the relationship of gentrification with health.

The region-wide implementation of a relationship education program for first time parents delivered in the maternal and child health care setting: evaluating reach and effectiveness

Aims: To present the results of a region-wide evaluation of Baby Makes 3, a brief relationship education program for first time parents implemented in the maternal and child health setting. Background: The program is designed to utilise the ‘teachable moment’ provided by the birth of the first child, and strengthen the couple relationship, promoting gender equity and preventing intimate partner violence. The literature contains only a few similar examples, none of which have been implemented on a region-wide scale in a rural context. Participants: First time parents in the Great South Coast Region of Victoria, irrespective of whether they had participated in Baby Makes 3, group facilitators, and other stakeholders involved in the program across the region including maternal and child health nurses. Methods: Interviews were conducted with parents, group facilitators and other stakeholders. Routinely collected surveys completed by parents and group facilitators were also analysed. Data was collected throughout the period April 2013 to August 2015. Findings: Fewer than one-third of new parents in the region participated in Baby Makes 3. Parents, group facilitators and other stakeholders all made suggestions as to how program reach could be improved. These included the need to take account of key components of rural life including farm work and not clashing with sporting activities. Nevertheless, for those who participated, the program was judged highly effective according to both parents and staff. Additionally, parents valued the social interaction generated by the program as an outcome in itself, connected to the value of the program in normalising the challenges they were facing as new parents. Minimal negative effects were identified. Discussion: Transition to parenthood is a time when many parents are open to exploring gender roles and expectations within their relationships, especially in a context in which the challenges of parenting are normalised. However, the implementation of such a program which has been designed in an urban context may require modifications when delivered in a rural area. Conclusion: Parenting programs are just as necessary in rural as in urban contexts. Furthermore, modifying the program to commence prior to the birth of a child further work may improve program reach. What is already known about this topic? The birth of the first child, has been found in urban settings, to be a time when parents are open to brief interventions which lead to improved awareness, communication skills, attitudes and behaviours supportive of gender equity and a strengthened couple relationship. What this paper adds: Programs which promote gender equity and respectful relationships are beneficial to new parents in rural areas, but effective implementation requires taking into account the characteristics of local communities.

Patterns of Forest Encroachment Behavior Based on Characteristics of Immigrants and Local Communities

This study aims to analyze the comparison of the behavioral characteristics of forest encroachers between migrants and local communities. The research method uses descriptive analysis. Sampling using the snowball sampling method. The results showed that the behavior of forest encroachment was formed based on the number of respondents from the most, namely the behavior of sustainable, mixed and unsustainable use. However, when viewed based on land area, it turns out to be inversely proportional to where the area of rubber plantations is at least 822 ha, while the area of oil palm plantations reaches 1203 ha. In addition, it should be noted that the highest land area is found in a mixed pattern. This means that local people have started to look at oil palm plantations for cultivation. Overall, based on the age that dominates the forest encroachers, the range is 31-50 years. The education of migrants is higher than that of local communities, but the pattern of encroachment of local communities is more sustainable when compared to migrants. The number of family members of immigrants is mostly in the medium category, while the number of family members of local communities is mostly in the small category. In addition, squatters whose main occupation is farmers tend to be more sustainable when compared to other occupations. Efforts to resolve the problem of forest encroachment in the Dharmasraya PFMU area can be resolved through sustainable community empowerment activities, improving the handling of encroachers, and increasing the effectiveness of PFMU management.
