Sensing Optical Fibers for Earthquake Source Characterization Using Raw DAS Records

AbstractDistributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) is becoming a powerful tool for earthquake monitoring, providing continuous strain‐rate records of seismic events along fiber optic cables. However, the use of standard seismological techniques for earthquake source characterization requires the conversion of data in ground motion quantities. In this study we provide a new formulation for far‐field strain radiation emitted by a seismic rupture, which allows to directly analyze DAS data in their native physical quantity. This formulation naturally accounts for the complex directional sensitivity of the fiber to body waves and to the shallow layering beneath the cable. In this domain, we show that the spectral amplitude of the strain integral is related to the Fourier transform of the source time function, and its modeling allows to determine the source parameters. We demonstrate the validity of the technique on two case‐studies, where source parameters are consistent with estimates from standard seismic instruments in magnitude range 2.0–4.3. When analyzing events from a 1‐month DAS survey in Chile, moment‐corner frequency distribution shows scale invariant stress drop estimates, with an average of Δσ = (0.8 ± 0.6) MPa. Analysis of DAS data acquired in the Southern Apennines shows a dominance of the local attenuation that masks the effective corner frequency of the events. After estimating the local attenuation coefficient, we were able to retrieve the corner frequencies for the largest magnitude events in the catalog. Overall, this approach shows the capability of DAS technology to depict the characteristic scales of seismic sources and the released moment.

Assessing silver nanoparticle uptake dynamics in young zebrafish using swept source optical coherence tomography

Understanding the uptake and accumulation of nanoparticles in living organisms is crucial for assessing their potential effects on health and the environment. In this study, we employed a Swept Source Optical Coherence Tomography (SSOCT) system to investigate the dynamics of silver nanoparticle (AgNP) uptake during various developmental stages of zebrafish. Silver nanoparticles in the 20 nm range were synthesized and their uptake and accumulation in developing zebrafish embryos were studied over time. Changes in optical attenuation properties observed in SSOCT images allowed identification of nanoparticle uptake and accumulation in the eye, intestine, and gill region of developing zebrafish. The changes were quantified by deriving average local attenuation coefficient values. To validate our findings, inductively-coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) analysis was performed.

Regularized Ultrasound Phantom-Free Local Attenuation Coefficient Slope (ACS) Imaging in Homogeneous and Heterogeneous Tissues.

Attenuation maps or measurements based on the local attenuation coefficient slope (ACS) in quantitative ultrasound (QUS) have shown potential for the diagnosis of liver steatosis. In liver cancers, tissue abnormalities and tumors detected using ACS are also of interest to provide new image contrast to clinicians. Current phantom-based approaches have the limitation of assuming a comparable speed of sound between the reference phantom and insonified tissues. Moreover, these methods present the inconvenience for operators to acquire data on phantoms and patients. The main goal was to alleviate these drawbacks by proposing a methodology for constructing phantom-free regularized (PF-R) local ACS maps and investigate the performance in both homogeneous and heterogeneous media. The proposed method was tested on two tissue-mimicking media with different ACS constructed as homogeneous phantoms, side-by-side and top-to-bottom phantoms, and inclusion phantoms with different attenuations. Moreover, an in vivo proof-of-concept was performed on healthy, steatotic, and cancerous human liver datasets. Modifications brought to previous works include: 1) a linear interpolation of the power spectrum in the log scale; 2) the relaxation of the underlying hypothesis on the diffraction factor; 3) a generalization to nonhomogeneous local ACS; and 4) an adaptive restriction of frequencies to a more reliable range than the usable frequency range. Regularization was formulated as a generalized least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO), and a variant of the Bayesian information criterion (BIC) was applied to estimate the Lagrangian multiplier on the LASSO constraint. In addition, we evaluated the proposed algorithm when applying median filtering before and after regularization. Tests conducted showed that the PF-R yielded robust results in all tested conditions, suggesting potential for additional validation as a diagnosis method.

Absorption, scattering, and optical turbulence in natural waters.

The Beer-Lambert-Bouguer law characterizes attenuation of an optical plane wave resolved in terms of absorption and scattering of a medium it passes through. However, the optical turbulence present in a medium may also cause severe local attenuation in beam-like light fields. This study aims to incorporate the effects of absorption and scattering with that of optical turbulence in Earth's natural waters. To do so, expression for the turbulence induced local attenuation coefficient is developed first for the on-axis position of the lowest-order Gaussian beam, being dependent on the source's wavelength, width, and propagation distance. We present a comparison among turbulence, absorption, and scattering effects for different Jerlov water types. Our results show that underwater turbulence can cause attenuation quantitatively comparable to that of absorption. This study enables a direct comparison of absorption, scattering, and turbulence effects and will benefit the diagnostics of imaging, sensing, and communication systems operating underwater.

Spatially Variant Ultrasound Attenuation Mapping Using a Regularized Linear Least-Squares Approach

Quantitative ultrasound methods aim to estimate the acoustic properties of the underlying medium, such as the attenuation and backscatter coefficients, and have applications in various areas including tissue characterization. In practice, tissue heterogeneity makes the coefficient estimation challenging. In this work, we propose a computationally efficient algorithm to map spatial variations of the attenuation coefficient. Our proposed approach adopts a fast, linear least-squares strategy to fit the signal model to data from pulse-echo measurements. As opposed to existing approaches, we directly estimate the attenuation map, that is, the local attenuation coefficient at each axial location by solving a joint estimation problem. In particular, we impose a physical model that couples all these local estimates and combine it with a smooth regularization to obtain a smooth map. Compared to the conventional spectral log difference method and the more recent ALGEBRA approach, we demonstrate that the attenuation estimates obtained by our method are more accurate and better correlate with the ground-truth attenuation profiles over a wide range of spatial and contrast resolutions.

Calibration-free retrieval of density information from computed tomography data

In many research areas, particularly in materials science, retrieving a 3D distribution of the material density in a sample is of key interest. Although standard lab-based X-ray μCT imaging is capable of retrieving the 3D distribution of local attenuation coefficients, the local density cannot be determined unambiguously without the use of calibration standards due to the polychromaticity of the used X-ray tubes. In this paper, two methods are presented to retrieve this information based on accurate knowledge of the polychromatic properties of source and detector in the used μCT system. The methods use a very different approach, one being a polychromatic pre-processing method and one relying on a novel polychromatic iterative reconstruction method, yet produce equivalent results. They are limited to objects with a homogeneous composition, but are extremely powerful in a broad range of applications in materials characterization where the density distribution is of interest. Moreover, the method relying on iterative reconstruction has the potential to be applied for multi-material objects as well. A number of application examples illustrate the potential of the methods to not only retrieve quantitative estimates of density and sub-voxel porosity, but also to greatly reduce or eliminate the spectral artifacts that often hinder conventional calibration schemes.

Prepare Concrete Shielding from Local Materials and Study Linear Attenuation Coefficients

The shielding is considered the important ways which dependence on radiation protection as well as distance and time, the concrete is considered important used in shield against gamma ray. Concrete is a relatively low-cost material and it can be handle easily as it can be poured into various, complex shapes. The aim of this research is to verify the linear attenuation coefficient for mixing different types of cement, gravel and sand and choose the appropriate mixture to be used as a shield against gamma rays. In this research, three mixtures consisting of different types of cement available in the local market were used, as they were mixed with different amounts of sand and gravel of different sizes, and the shielding properties of these mixtures were studied against gamma rays using a gamma-ray spectroscopy consisting of NaI (Tl) detector and two sources, 60Co and 137Cs. The results shown in all the samples of the three groups are that the linear attenuation coefficients decrease with increasing the energy. The samples of concrete that contain the type KRISTAL cement have been the highest attenuation than other types of cement where results for attenuation were (0.30610), (0.22059) and (0.15253) for the energies (662, 1137 and 1332) KeV respectively. Either the samples which used different size of gravel, that the size of gravel (13 mm) have been heist attenuation that can be concluded the size (13 mm) of gravel is the best mixture of concrete to attenuation gamma ray in this research.

In vivo Ultrafast Quantitative Ultrasound and Shear Wave Elastography Imaging on Farm-Raised Duck Livers during Force Feeding

Shear wave elastography (speed and dispersion), local attenuation coefficient slope and homodyned-K parametric imaging were used for liver steatosis grading. These ultrasound biomarkers rely on physical interactions between shear and compression waves with tissues at both macroscopic and microscopic scales. These techniques were applied in a context not yet studied with ultrasound imaging, that is, monitoring steatosis of force-fed duck livers from pre-force-fed to foie gras stages. Each estimated feature presented a statistically significant trend along the feeding process (p values <10–3). However, whereas a monotonic increase in the shear wave speed was observed along the process, most quantitative ultrasound features exhibited an absolute maximum value halfway through the process. As the liver fat fraction in foie gras is much higher than that seen clinically, we hypothesized that a change in the ultrasound scattering regime is encountered for high-fat fractions, and consequently, care has to be taken when applying ultrasound biomarkers to grading of severe states of steatosis.

Description of Ore Particles from X-Ray Microtomography (XMT) Images, Supported by Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM)-Based Image Analysis.

In this paper, three-dimensional (3D) image data of ore particle systems is investigated. By combining X-ray microtomography with scanning electron microscope (SEM)-based image analysis, additional information about the mineralogical composition from certain planar sections can be gained. For the analysis of tomographic images of particle systems the extraction of single particles is essential. This is performed with a marker-based watershed algorithm and a post-processing step utilizing a neural network to reduce oversegmentation. The results are validated by comparing the 3D particle-wise segmentation empirically with 2D SEM images, which have been obtained with a different imaging process and segmentation algorithm. Finally, a stereological application is shown, in which planar SEM images are embedded into the tomographic 3D image. This allows the estimation of local X-ray attenuation coefficients, which are material-specific quantities, in the entire tomographic image.

Parameterization of an optical model to refine seagrass habitat requirements in an urbanized coastline

Accurate simulation of the underwater light climate is a requirement to understanding and predicting the ecological benefits from initiatives to manage land-derived inputs of nutrients and suspended solids to the coast. The goal of this work was to derive an empirical light model to be used in the water quality module of a coupled physical-biogeochemical model, developed to estimate habitat suitability for seagrasses in a metropolitan region (Adelaide, South Australia) affected by wastewater and stormwater discharges. Paired measurements of water quality and the vertical attenuation coefficient (Kd) obtained at six fixed sites between summer and winter were used in a multiple regression analysis to optimize local specific attenuation coefficients for coloured dissolved organic matter (CDOM) (2.623 cm m−1, measured as absorption at 254 nm), chlorophyll a (0.071 m2 mg−1), suspended solids (SS) < 63 μm (0.032 m2 g−1) and >63 μm (0.001 m2 g−1). The fitted relation explained 65% of the variability in Kd, with a standard error of 0.10 m-1. This error is small considering a mean Kd value of 0.35 m-1, varying between 0.12 and 0.89 m-1. Fine SS contributed on average 6 times more light attenuation (34%) than coarse SS (6%). CDOM was the second largest contributor to Kd (36%). The contribution of chlorophyll a to Kd (13%) was only marginally higher than the background imparted by seawater (12%). In shallow waters (3–5 m), Kd values were >0.4 m-1 and heavily influenced by sediment resuspension. In deeper waters (12–15 m), Kd values decreased and were dominated by CDOM. The light climate in the north of the study region was also heavily influenced by CDOM inputs, not only from point sources but also from mangroves and seagrass beds. This analysis suggests the control of fine SS as the most powerful management option to deter further nearshore seagrass losses in the region, and promote seagrass restoration.

Neutron tomography of axially symmetric objects using 14 MeV neutrons from a portable neutron generator.

In nuclear boiling water reactor cores, the distribution of water and steam (void) is essential for both safety and efficiency reasons. In order to enhance predictive capabilities, void distribution assessment is performed in two-phase test-loops under reactor-relevant conditions. This article proposes the novel technique of fast-neutron tomography using a portable deuterium-tritium neutron generator to determine the time-averaged void distribution in these loops. Fast neutrons have the advantage of high transmission through the metallic structures and pipes typically concealing a thermal-hydraulic test loop, while still being fairly sensitive to the water/void content. However, commercially available fast-neutron generators also have the disadvantage of a relatively low yield and fast-neutron detection also suffers from relatively low detection efficiency. Fortunately, some loops are axially symmetric, a property which can be exploited to reduce the amount of data needed for tomographic measurement, thus limiting the interrogation time needed. In this article, three axially symmetric test objects depicting a thermal-hydraulic test loop have been examined; steel pipes with outer diameter 24 mm, thickness 1.5 mm, and with three different distributions of the plastic material POM inside the pipes. Data recorded with the FANTOM fast-neutron tomography instrument have been used to perform tomographic reconstructions to assess their radial material distribution. Here, a dedicated tomographic algorithm that exploits the symmetry of these objects has been applied, which is described in the paper. Results are demonstrated in 20 rixel (radial pixel) reconstructions of the interior constitution and 2D visualization of the pipe interior is demonstrated. The local POM attenuation coefficients in the rixels were measured with errors (RMS) of 0.025, 0.020, and 0.022 cm(-1), solid POM attenuation coefficient. The accuracy and precision is high enough to provide a useful indication on the flow mode, and a visualization of the radial material distribution can be obtained. A benefit of this system is its potential to be mounted at any axial height of a two-phase test section without requirements for pre-fabricated entrances or windows. This could mean a significant increase in flexibility of the void distribution assessment capability at many existing two-phase test loops.

Optical coherence tomography can assess skeletal muscle tissue from mouse models of muscular dystrophy by parametric imaging of the attenuation coefficient.

We present the assessment of ex vivo mouse muscle tissue by quantitative parametric imaging of the near-infrared attenuation coefficient µt using optical coherence tomography. The resulting values of the local total attenuation coefficient µt (mean ± standard error) from necrotic lesions in the dystrophic skeletal muscle tissue of mdx mice are higher (9.6 ± 0.3 mm(-1)) than regions from the same tissue containing only necrotic myofibers (7.0 ± 0.6 mm(-1)), and significantly higher than values from intact myofibers, whether from an adjacent region of the same sample (4.8 ± 0.3 mm(-1)) or from healthy tissue of the wild-type C57 mouse (3.9 ± 0.2 mm(-1)) used as a control. Our results suggest that the attenuation coefficient could be used as a quantitative means to identify necrotic lesions and assess skeletal muscle tissue in mouse models of human Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

Elimination of Fresnel Reflection Boundary Effects and Beam Steering in Pulsed Terahertz Computed Tomography

For the past few decades there has been tremendous innovation and development of Terahertz (THz) science and imaging. In particular, the technique of 3-D computed tomography has been adapted from the X-Ray to the THz range. However, the finite refractive index of materials in the THz range can severally refract probing THz beams during the acquisition of tomography data. Due to Fresnel reflection power losses at the boundaries as well as steering of the THz beam through the sample, refractive effects lead to anomalously high local attenuation coefficients near the material boundaries of a reconstructed image. These boundary phenomena can dominate the reconstructed THz-CT images making it difficult to distinguish structural defect(s) inside the material. In this paper an algorithm has been developed to remove the effects of refraction in THz-CT reconstructed images. The algorithm is successfully implemented on cylindrical shaped objects.

Time domain attenuation estimation method from ultrasonic backscattered signals.

Ultrasonic attenuation is important not only as a parameter for characterizing tissue but also for compensating other parameters that are used to classify tissues. Several techniques have been explored for estimating ultrasonic attenuation from backscattered signals. In the present study, a technique is developed to estimate the local ultrasonic attenuation coefficient by analyzing the time domain backscattered signal. The proposed method incorporates an objective function that combines the diffraction pattern of the source/receiver with the attenuation slope in an integral equation. The technique was assessed through simulations and validated through experiments with a tissue mimicking phantom and fresh rabbit liver samples. The attenuation values estimated using the proposed technique were compared with the attenuation estimated using insertion loss measurements. For a data block size of 15 pulse lengths axially and 15 beamwidths laterally, the mean attenuation estimates from the tissue mimicking phantoms were within 10% of the estimates using insertion loss measurements. With a data block size of 20 pulse lengths axially and 20 beamwidths laterally, the error in the attenuation values estimated from the liver samples were within 10% of the attenuation values estimated from the insertion loss measurements.

Parametric imaging of the local attenuation coefficient in human axillary lymph nodes assessed using optical coherence tomography

We report the use of optical coherence tomography (OCT) to determine spatially localized optical attenuation coefficients of human axillary lymph nodes and their use to generate parametric images of lymphoid tissue. 3D-OCT images were obtained from excised lymph nodes and optical attenuation coefficients were extracted assuming a single scattering model of OCT. We present the measured attenuation coefficients for several tissue regions in benign and reactive lymph nodes, as identified by histopathology. We show parametric images of the measured attenuation coefficients as well as segmented images of tissue type based on thresholding of the attenuation coefficient values. Comparison to histology demonstrates the enhancement of contrast in parametric images relative to OCT images. This enhancement is a step towards the use of OCT for in situ assessment of lymph nodes.

In vivo low-coherence spectroscopic measurements of local hemoglobin absorption spectra in human skin

Localized spectroscopic measurements of optical properties are invaluable for diagnostic applications that involve layered tissue structures, but conventional spectroscopic techniques lack exact control over the size and depth of the probed tissue volume. We show that low-coherence spectroscopy (LCS) overcomes these limitations by measuring local attenuation and absorption coefficient spectra in layered phantoms. In addition, we demonstrate the first in vivo LCS measurements of the human epidermis and dermis only. From the measured absorption in two distinct regions of the dermal microcirculation, we determine total hemoglobin concentration (3.0±0.5 g∕l and 7.8±1.2 g∕l) and oxygen saturation.

The Location and Sizing of Historical Earthquakes Using the Attenuation of Macroseismic Intensity with Distance

We herein describe new methods for computing the quantitative parameters of earthquakes using macroseismic data and the uncertainties associated with these parameters. The methods allow for the location of epicenters that are offshore or that have no intensities assigned to any points in the epicentral region by maximizing the likelihood function of an attenuation equation with observed intensity data. In the most favorable cases, such an approach also allows the estimation of the source depth and the local attenuation coefficients. We compute the parameter uncertainties in two ways: (1) using formal methods, such as the inversion of the Hessian of the log-likelihood function at its maximum, and (2) by using bootstrap simulations. We tested the performance of our methods by comparison with reliable instrumental hypocenters of onshore earthquakes, and found a reasonable agreement with the epicentral locations (within 10–15 km for more than 70% of cases) but not with the hypocentral depths, for which our results are generally underestimated by a factor of 2 or more and are poorly related to instrumental estimates. This finding indicates that the use of macroseismic depths in seismic hazard and seismotectonic investigations should be treated with caution. We nevertheless found good agreement (within 10°–15°) between the fault-trace orientations that were computed using the macroseismic data and the associated focal mechanisms of earthquakes with M w≥5.7. The surprising accuracy of the macroseismic orientations obtained using this method could in some cases allow the true fault to be inferred between the two conjugate planes of a given focal mechanism.

A novel power spectrum calculation method using phase-compensation and weighted averaging for the estimation of ultrasound attenuation

An estimation of ultrasound attenuation in soft tissues is critical in the quantitative ultrasound analysis since it is not only related to the estimations of other ultrasound parameters, such as speed of sound, integrated scatterers, or scatterer size, but also provides pathological information of the scanned tissue. However, estimation performances of ultrasound attenuation are intimately tied to the accurate extraction of spectral information from the backscattered radiofrequency (RF) signals. In this paper, we propose two novel techniques for calculating a block power spectrum from the backscattered ultrasound signals. These are based on the phase-compensation of each RF segment using the normalized cross-correlation to minimize estimation errors due to phase variations, and the weighted averaging technique to maximize the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). The simulation results with uniform numerical phantoms demonstrate that the proposed method estimates local attenuation coefficients within 1.57% of the actual values while the conventional methods estimate those within 2.96%. The proposed method is especially effective when we deal with the signal reflected from the deeper depth where the SNR level is lower or when the gated window contains a small number of signal samples. Experimental results, performed at 5 MHz, were obtained with a one-dimensional 128 elements array, using the tissue-mimicking phantoms also show that the proposed method provides better estimation results (within 3.04% of the actual value) with smaller estimation variances compared to the conventional methods (within 5.93%) for all cases considered.

Determination of shallow water depth using optical satellite images

The Penghu archipelago comprises 64 basaltic volcanic isles lying on the Taiwan Strait between mainland China and Taiwan. The water around and within these isles is shallow and poses considerable difficulty in echo sounding detection for bathymetry. Most existing bathymetry data around such areas are in water depths of greater than 5 m. Therefore, when the water depth is less than 5 m the data tend to be over-extrapolated. In this study, a remote sensing method provides a more effective approach to recording shallow water depths compared to traditional soundings using multitemporal images collected by optical/near-infrared sensors from SPOT satellites. This method employs optical energy reflections to obtain the water depth. In this study, we made several improvements wherein a relative atmosphere correction technique was used to calibrate two images within a similar atmospheric condition. We then compared the satellite images acquired from different dates to obtain the local water attenuation coefficient of sunlight. Finally, we developed a means to estimate the water attenuation coefficient and bottom reflectance which will satisfy the two parameters across the study area. Our results show a high-resolution map of shallow bathymetry for the Penghu archipelago and revealed a maximum depth of about 20 m. This study provides an efficient approach for shallow bathymetry retrieval. Many detailed features revealed by this approach may contribute to further geological research and developments in harbour and coastal engineering.

New opportunities for 3D materials science of polycrystalline materials at the micrometre lengthscale by combined use of X-ray diffraction and X-ray imaging

Non-destructive, three-dimensional (3D) characterization of the grain structure in mono-phase polycrystalline materials is an open challenge in material science. Recent advances in synchrotron based X-ray imaging and diffraction techniques offer interesting possibilities for mapping 3D grain shapes and crystallographic orientations for certain categories of polycrystalline materials. Direct visualisation of the three-dimensional grain boundary network or of two-phase (duplex) grain structures by means of absorption and/or phase contrast techniques may be possible, but is restricted to specific material systems. A recent extension of this methodology, termed X-ray diffraction contrast tomography (DCT), combines the principles of X-ray diffraction imaging, three-dimensional X-ray diffraction microscopy (3DXRD) and image reconstruction from projections. DCT provides simultaneous access to 3D grain shape, crystallographic orientation and local attenuation coefficient distribution. The technique applies to the larger range of plastically undeformed, polycrystalline mono-phase materials, provided some conditions on grain size and texture are fulfilled. The straightforward combination with high-resolution microtomography opens interesting new possibilities for the observation of microstructure related damage and deformation mechanisms in these materials.
