Improving the electrochemical performance of lithium-rich manganese-based cathode materials by Na₂S₂O₈ surface treatment

Lithium-rich manganese-based cathode materials are well-regarded for their high specific capacity and notable voltage thresholds, making them attractive for advanced energy storage applications. However, their widespread commercialization is hindered by challenges in cycle performance, including suboptimal initial Coulombic efficiency, inadequate cycle stability, and constrained rate capability. To address these issues, this paper introduces a novel modification strategy using Na₂S₂O₈ to chemically delithiate the surface of the materials. This modification strategy dramatically enhances the initial Coulombic efficiency. The results demonstrate that the initial Coulombic efficiency of the two pre-activated samples improved to 84.6 % and 102.2 %, respectively. At the same time, the Na₂S₂O₈-treated samples exhibit a higher maximum discharge capacity at a 0.2 C rate, reaching 211.1 mAh g⁻¹ and 201.3 mAh g⁻¹, which notably surpasses the untreated sample's capacity of 188.7 mAh g⁻¹. Additionally, the treated samples exhibit improved cycling and rate performance, with capacity retention of 81.2 % and 63.5 %, respectively. After 60 cycles, these figures continue to be superior to those of the untreated material, which stands at 57.3 %. The results demonstrate that Na₂S₂O₈ treatment leads to the in situ formation of spinel phases on the material surface, thereby enhances the cycling stability and rate capability of the cathode material. Compared to traditional surface treatment methods, Na₂S₂O₈ solution treatment can induce more profound structural evolution without necessitating high-temperature calcination, thus reducing the demands on process conditions and equipment and offering greater process controllability. Moreover, this surface modification strategy paves the way for applying spinel coatings on other substrates with similar structures.

Effect of Rare Earth Ion Doping on the Performance of Lithium-Rich Cathode Materials for Lithium-Ion Batteries

Lithium-rich layered oxide cathode materials have the advantages of a high voltage and a high specific capacity. Their commercial applications have however been impeded by some disadvantages such as low initial coulombic efficiency and low cycle life. To overcome these issues, rare earth ion-doped lithium-rich layered oxide cathode materials are investigated in this work. The irreversible release of O2- in Li2MnO3 is suppressed by rare earth ions doping, which enhanced the initial coulombic efficiency of the materials. Meanwhile, the rare-earth ion radius used for doping is larger than the Mn4+ radius, which enlarges the (003)-crystalline plane spacing, resulting in a significant enhancement of the rate performance of the material.

Performance improvement strategies of boron-doped lithium-rich layered oxide cathode materials for wide temperature condition

Herein, the boron-doped Li-rich materials are prepared by rapid nucleation-assisted solvothermal and high-temperature method. In this work, the effects of boron doping on crystal structure and cycling performances of as-prepared materials were investigated. The material characterization results show that the introduction of B reduces the TM valence, enlarges the (003) space distance, and modulates the local crystal structure, which may change the electrochemical performance of as-prepared samples. Li1.2Ni0.24Co0.08Mn0.48B0.02O2 (LLNCMBO-2) showed an increase in discharge capacity of 36.5 mAh g−1 at 0.1 C compared to the pristine sample. The LLNCMBO-2 exhibit high capacity retention of 85.50 % after 200 cycles with a voltage decay of only 254.9 mV. Additionally, the results of wide temperature testing show that the electrochemical performance of boron-doped samples improved evidently.

Surface Reconstruction Enhanced Li-Rich Cathode Materials for Durable Lithium-Ion Batteries.

Regulating the distribution of surface elements in lithium-rich cathode materials can effectively change the electrochemical performance of cathode materials. Considering that the enrichment of Mn element on the surface is the main reason for the irreversible phase transition and dissolution of its surface structure, which in turn is the main reason for performance degradation. Based on the molten salt-assisted sintering method, a lithium rich cathode material with surface rich Ni and Co is designed and prepared. The surface enrichment of Ni and Co effectively reduces the dissolution of Mn, promotes the occurrence of irreversible collapse of surface structure from layered phase to rock salt phase on the material surface, improves the stability of surface crystal phase structure, and improves the cycling stability of positive electrode materials. Notably, after 500 cycles at 1 C current density, the discharge-specific capacity attained 189.8 mAh g -1, with a capacity retention rate of 88.9%, indicating a 42.1% improvement in capacity retention. Molten salt treatment is widely used in the modification of positive electrode materials. The research work will provide new ideas for improving the stability of lithium rich materials and promoting their commercial applications.

Effect of sites of doped Mg on the stability of lattice oxygen in lithium-rich manganese-based cathode materials

Elemental doping is considered as an effective method for altering the localized electronic structure of lattice oxygen in lithium-rich manganese-based oxides (LRMO) and enhancing their structural stability. However, the effect of doping heteroatoms at different sites on the oxygen redox is not clear. In this work, Mg is introduced into transition metals (TM) and lithium (Li) sites of LRMO at co-precipitation stage and lithiation stage to prepare LRMO-TM and LRMO-Li, respectively. The experimental results and density-functional theory calculations demonstrate that the oxygen release is reduced from 4.1653 nmol mg−1 of pristine to 3.3886 nmol mg−1 of LRMO-Li, and 2.7688 nmol mg−1 of LRMO-TM. The reduction of oxygen release of LRMO-Li is related to the formation of strong Mg-O interactions. Different from that, the lower oxygen release of LRMO-TM is mainly due to the reduction of electron holes in the O 2p state caused by the weaker Mn-O covalency, which effectively restricts the over-oxidization of oxygen. The capacity retention of LRMO-TM is 85.18 % at 0.2C after 200 cycles, which is higher than that of LRMO (78.63 %) and LRMO-Li (82.28 %). This work reveals the mechanism of enhancing lattice oxygen stability caused by Mg doping at different sites.

Lithium-rich manganese-based layered oxide cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries modified by MoS2 coatings with two-dimensional graphene-like structures

Lithium-rich manganese-based layered oxide cathode materials (LRMCs) have some unique advantages such as high theoretical capacity (≥ 250 mAh g-1) and high energy density. Therefore, they are deemed as a kind of cathode material for lithium-ion batteries with an excellent prospect of application. However, the redox of oxygen anion is able to generate irreversible lattice oxygen loss, leading to the irreversible loss of capacity, bringing about a sharp drop in working voltage, and seriously restricting the commercialization of LRMCs. In this paper, MoS2 coating with two-dimensional graphene-like structure is coated on the surface of LRMCs material for improving the cycling stability and rate performance of the material. The MoS2 coating can provide a two-dimensional diffusion channel for the migration of lithium-ions, which facilitates the fast release of lithium-ions during cycling process. The results show that the first discharge capacity, initial Coulomb efficiency and rate performance of LRMCs were improved. When the current density is 1C, the first discharge specific capacity of LRMCs@MoS2 reaches 227.69 mAh g-1, and the capacity retention ratio is 84.98% after 100 cycles. When the current density is 5C, it can still provide a discharge specific capacity of 137.87 mAh g-1, demonstrating excellent electrochemical performance. This study comes up a simple and practical idea to realize the modification of cathode materials for high performance lithium-ion batteries.

Origin of enhanced electrochemical performance in lithium-rich cathode materials via the fast ion conductor Li2O-B2O3-LiBr

Lithium-rich cathode materials have garnered significant attention in the energy sector due to their high specific capacity. However, severe capacity degradation impedes their large-scale application. The employment of fast ion conductors for coating has shown potential in improving their electrochemical performance, yet the structural and chemical mechanisms underlying this improvement remain unclear. In this study, we systematically analyze, through first-principles calculations, the mechanism by which Li2O-B2O3-LiBr (Hereafter referred to as LBB) coating enhances the electrochemical performance of the lithium-rich layered cathode material 0.5Li2MnO3·0.5LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2 (Hereafter referred to as OLO). Our calculations reveal that the LBB coating introduces a more negative valence charge (average −0.14 e) around the oxygen atoms surrounding transition metals, thereby strengthening metal-oxygen interactions. This interaction mitigates irreversible oxygen oxidation caused by anionic redox reactions under high voltages, reducing irreversible structural changes during battery operation. Furthermore, while the migration barrier for Li+ in OLO is 0.61 eV, the LBB coating acts as a rapid conduit during the Li+ deintercalation process, reducing the migration barrier to 0.32 eV and slightly lowering the internal migration barrier within OLO to 0.43 eV. Calculations of binding energies to electrolyte byproducts HF before and after coating (at −7.421 and −3.253 eV, respectively) demonstrate that the LBB coating effectively resists HF corrosion. Subsequent electrochemical performance studies corroborated these findings. The OLO cathode with a 2% LBB coating exhibited a discharge capacity of 157.12 mAh g−1 after 100 cycles, with a capacity retention rate of 80.38%, whereas the uncoated OLO displayed only 141.67 mAh g−1 and a 72.45% capacity retention. At a 2 C rate, with the 2 wt% LBB-coated sample maintaining a discharge capacity of 140.22 mAh g−1 compared to only 107.02 mAh g−1 for the uncoated OLO.

Achieving the dual regulation of microstructure and microdefects in lithium rich materials by electrospinning technology

Lithium-rich manganese-based cathode materials (LNCM) have garnered tremendous attention for the superior reversible capacity. However, the inherently unstable structure and low diffusion kinetics of Li+ hamper their commercialization process. Recent studies have shown that void defects within grains are the main cause of oxygen release and voltage drop during cycling. Therefore, highly crystallinity small particles are the ideal structure for high power density and cycling stability of LNCM. However, improving the crystallinity of materials often means increasing the sintering temperature, which can easily cause material aggregation and grain growth. In this paper, by adopting the electrostatic spinning technology, nanowire shaped precursor are constructed, which facilitates the direct contact between the hot gas flow and the precursor during sintering, thus promoting ion diffusion and material crystallinity. Besides, the electronic and chemical environment in the modified LNCM sample have regulated simultaneously, accompanying with a significant increase in O vacancies, Mn4+ and Ni3+ ions. Adjustments from morphology to molecular structure increased the contact area between the material and electrolyte, improved the diffusion ability of Li+, and enhanced structural stability of the material, resulting in improved rate performance and cycling stability. This study expands our understanding of adopting electrospinning technology to prepare high-performance materials.

Comprehensive Review of Li-Rich Mn-Based Layered Oxide Cathode Materials for Lithium-Ion Batteries: Theories, Challenges, Strategies and Perspectives.

Lithium-rich manganese-based layered oxide cathode materials (LLOs) have always been considered as the most promising cathode materials for achieving high energy density lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, in practical applications, LLOs often face some key problems, such as low initial coulombic efficiency, capacity/voltage decay, poor rate performance and poor cycle stability. It seriously shortens the lifespan of lithium-ion batteries and hinder the large-scale commercial application of LLOs. Herein, firstly, the basic theories of LLOs were systematically reviewed, including the structural characteristics, the working mechanism of LLOs, the preparation methods of LLOs (liquid phase co-precipitate method, sol-gel method, hydrothermal synthesis method, solid phase method, low heat solid-phase method, high temperature solid-state method etc.), and electrochemical characteristics of LLOs (first charge discharge characteristics and reversible efficiency, cycling performance, high and low temperature performance and thermal stability etc.). Then, key challenges faced by LLOs were systematically discussed. Finally, the LLOs modification strategies used to address these challenges (element doping, surface modification, defect engineering, structural and morphological control etc.) were elaborated in detail. This important review provides potential insights and directions for further improving the electrochemical performance of LLOs, and provides a necessary theoretical basis for accelerating the large-scale commercial application of LLOs. It possesses important scientific research value and far-reaching social significance.

Insights from Ab Initio Molecular Dynamics on the Interface Reaction between Electrolyte and Li2MnO3 Cathode during the Charging Process.

The complex interface reactions are crucial to the performance of the Li2MnO3 cathode material. Here, the interface reactions between the liquid electrolyte and the typical surfaces of Li2MnO3 during the charging process are systematically investigated by ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulation and first-principles calculation. The results indicate that these interface reactions lead to the formation of hydroxide radicals, oxygen, carbon dioxide, carbonate radicals, and other products, which are consistent with the experimental findings. These processes primarily result from the conversion of the stable closed-shell O2- into reactive oxygen ions by electron loss. All surfaces exhibit some degree of layered- and spinel-like phase transitions during the AIMD simulations, consistent with the experiment. This is mainly attributed to the decrease in the Mn-O bond strength and the increase in the Li/O ion vacancy concentration. This study offers valuable theoretical insights into the interface reaction between lithium-rich cathode materials and liquid electrolytes.

Manganese octahedral point-constructed oxygen defects realize highly stable lithium-rich cathode materials

Lithium-rich layered oxides (LLOs) are highly favored by researchers for their high specific capacity and low cost. However, the severe voltage and capacity degradation of the material have become the biggest obstacle to commercial application. In this work, the construction of oxygen vacancies on the surface of Li-rich cathode and SiO44- gradient doping have been used in Li-rich materials to improve its performance. The presence of oxygen defects in MnO6 octahedra stabilizes its structure and enhances the electrochemical activity of TM ions. This also serves to reduce the energy level and intensity of the unhybridized O 2p orbitals, as well as decrease the release of lattice oxygen. The "localization effect" of SiO44− on TM ions also inhibits their irreversible migration. After modification, the electrochemical performance of the material has been significantly improved. The initial Coulombic efficiency increased to 89.46 % (82.68 % for LLO), while the specific capacity discharge at 5C reached 178.8 mAh g−1 (139.2 mAh g−1 for LLO). Additionally, the capacity rate after 500 cycles at 1C was 74.1 % (54.5 % for LLO). Therefore, this work provides valuable insights for designing oxygen-deficient lithium-rich cathode materials.

A universal strategy towards high-rate and ultralong-life of Li‐rich Mn‐based cathode materials

Lithium-rich manganese-based cathode materials (LRMs) have shown promise for the next-generation lithium battery cathodes due to their high discharge specific capacity (∼250 mAh g−1) and wide operating voltage range (2.0–4.8 V). However, these materials face limitations such as low initial Coulombic efficiency (ICE), poor cycle stability, and inadequate rate capability. To address these challenges, we employed a simple citric acid treatment (CA-treatment) method to fabricate the Li-rich spinel coating layer on LRMs. This in situ formed spinel Li4Mn5O12 layer successfully suppresses the oxygen release, provides three-dimensional (3D) lithium-ion diffusion channels and enriches Li embedding sites, resulting in a substantial improvement in the rate capability and high-rate cycling performance. The modified LRM delivers a high specific capacity of 193.7 mAh g−1 at 2.0 C and 154.8 mAh g−1 at 5.0 C, after 1000 cycles at 10.0 C, 77.4 % capacity retention with 102.5 mAh g−1 is realized. This facile CA-treatment benefits the electrochemical properties of LRMs comparable to those of altering the microscopic morphology. This work offers a new avenue for exploring outstanding LRMs with high-rate and ultralong cycling life.

Enhanced electrochemical properties of Li1.2Mn0.54Co0.13Ni0.13O2 by modulation of surface oxygen vacancies

The lithium-rich cathode material Li1.2Mn0.54Co0.13Ni0.13O2 (LMR) has attracted significant interest due to its high specific capacity and energy density, which stem from its unique anionic redox chemistry. Oxygen vacancies significantly impact the crystal structure and electrochemical performance of Li-rich manganese-based cathode materials. This study thoroughly examined how sintering temperature affects the crystallinity, morphology, crystal structure, and oxygen vacancy content of the materials, as well as the impact of oxygen vacancies on their structural and electrochemical properties. XPS and EPR analyses are conducted to investigate the relationship between sintering temperature and oxygen vacancies. Additionally, the spinel phase, altered by oxygen vacancies on the material's surface, is identified using Raman, TEM and EELS. Furthermore, first-principles calculations and data from the constant-current intermittent titration technique indicate that oxygen vacancies significantly enhance the material's ion transport rate.

Multifunctional surface modification to enhance the electrochemical performance of lithium-rich manganese-based cathode materials

The preparation of high-performance lithium-rich manganese-based cathode materials (LLOs) require attention to the redox of anions and the migration of transition metals (TM) during the cycling process. In this study, Ce ion-doped Li-rich cathode coated with La0.2Ce0.8O2, which has abundant oxygen vacancies on its surface, was prepared. The presence of the oxygen storage material La0.2Ce0.8O2 can effectively absorb the irreversible oxygen generated during cycling, preventing it from reacting with the electrolyte to form thick cathode electrolyte interface (CEI) coatings. These coatings hinder the relative activity of lattice oxygen in the bulk phase, reducing the specific capacity of the material. Additionally, the 5d metal ion Ce carries a large nuclear charge, causing a 'pinning effect' when it integrates into the LLOs structure. This effect reduces thermal oscillation in the lattice, impedes TM migration during battery charging and discharging, and effectively prevents voltage decay. Results indicate that after 100 cycles at 1C and 25 °C, the surface-coated materials maintain a discharge-specific capacity of 194 mAh/g, compared to 158 mAh/g for uncoated material. Voltage decay decreased from 4.4 mV/cycle to 1.8 mV/cycle, with an ICE of 91.5 % versus the original material's 82.8 %. The modified material also exhibits improved rate performance, retaining a specific capacity of 162 mAh/g at 3C, in contrast to the original material's 123 mAh/g.

Jointly Improving Anionic-Cationic Redox Reversibility of Lithium-Rich Manganese-Based Cathode Materials by N Surface Doping.

The lithium-rich manganese-based layer oxide (LRMO) with high specific capacity (∼300 mAh g-1) and economic feasibility is accepted as the cathode material for high energy density rechargeable batteries. Accompanied by the additional anionic redox reactions during the initial charging process, LRMO presents oxygen release, sluggish Li+ diffusion, and irreversible transition metal ion (TM) migration, which is responsible for its severe structural deterioration and rapid capacity/voltage decay. Here, the N doping strategy is proposed via feasible treatment of oxygen-vacancy-containing Li1.16Ni0.21Mn0.63O2-δ (LNMO) particles. The as obtained LNMO-N samples demonstrate doping N, partially reduced Mn/Ni cations, and oxygen vacancies on the surface. The DFT calculations and experimental results demonstrate that N replacing the crystal oxygen sites on the surface reduces the energy barrier for diffusion, thereby enhancing the kinetics of Li+ diffusion and improving the reversibility of transition metal migration. Furthermore, N doping induces stacking faults and a more flexible structure. Therefore, LNMO-N exhibits a significantly improved anionic-cationic redox reaction reversibility with a high discharge specific capacity of 296.6 mAh g-1 at 20 mA g-1 within the range of 2.0 to 4.8 V and an impressive initial Coulombic efficiency of 85.9%. Moreover, the rate capability is obviously improved with a remarkable capacity of 215.1 mAh g-1 at 200 mA g-1 in 200 cycles with a capacity retention of 72.52% and exceptional performance of 141.4 mAh g-1 even at a higher current density of 1000 mA g-1.

Mitigating chain degradation of lithium-rich manganese-based cathode material by surface engineering

Due to offering joint cationic and anionic redox, lithium-rich manganese-based layered oxides (LMLOs) allow high energy density in lithium-ion batteries. However, the oxygen loss, electrode-electrolyte interface side reactions and the structural degradation have resulted in continuous performance decay, hindering the scale-up application of LMLOs. Here, Li1.3V0.94(BO3)2 (LVB) is uniformly coated on the Li1.2Mn0.54Co0.13Ni0.13O2 (LMNCO) surface by using a sol-gel method combined with a high-temperature calcination. By applying multiple characterizations including in-situ XRD, DEMS, HRTEM, AFM and electrochemical test, we prove that the LVB layer provides a physical barrier, which effectively inhibits the surface reactivity and blocks the chain degradation from the source, improves the reversibility of O2- redox and prevents the phase transition and structural degradation propagating from the surface to the bulk. Moreover, the kinetic investigations and calculations reveal that the LVB modification not only improves the electron conductivity of materials by decreasing the surface work function and increasing the electron density near the Fermi energy level, but also provides expanded pathways with lower impedance to facilitate the Li+ transfer and diffusion. Impressively, the modified cathode exhibits the higher rate performance (151 mAh g-1 at 5C) and improved cycle stability under high cutoff voltage (217.7 mAh g-1 after 200 cycles at 0.2C in 2.0–4.8 V, 92.5 % capacity retention; even in 2.0–5 V, 93.9 % after 100 cycles). This work systematically investigates the inhibiting degradation mechanism and establishes the correlation between the intrinsic structure and surface engineering, and offers valuable insight into the development of high-performance LMLOs.

Cut-off voltage influencing the voltage decay of single crystal lithium-rich manganese-based cathode materials in lithium-ion batteries

The voltage decay of Li-rich layered oxide cathode materials results in the deterioration of cycling performance and continuous energy loss, which seriously hinders their application in the high-energy–density lithium-ion battery (LIB) market. However, the origin of the voltage decay mechanism remains controversial due to the complex influences of transition metal (TM) migration, oxygen release, indistinguishable surface/bulk reactions and the easy intra/inter-crystalline cracking during cycling. We investigated the direct cause of voltage decay in micrometer-scale single-crystal Li1.2Mn0.54Ni0.13Co0.13O2 (SC-LNCM) cathode materials by regulating the cut-off voltage. The redox of TM and O2− ions can be precisely controlled by setting different voltage windows, while the cracking can be restrained, and surface/bulk structural evaluation can be monitored because of the large single crystal size. The results show that the voltage decay of SC-LNCM is related to the combined effect of cation rearrangement and oxygen release. Maintaining the discharge cutoff voltage at 3 V or the charging cutoff voltage at 4.5 V effectively mitigates the voltage decay, which provides a solution for suppressing the voltage decay of Li-rich and Mn-based layered oxide cathode materials. Our work provides significant insights into the origin of the voltage decay mechanism and an easily achievable strategy to restrain the voltage decay for Li-rich and Mn-based cathode materials.

Cation doping for enhanced layer spacing and electrochemical performance in Li-rich Mn-based lithium-ion cathode materials

Lithium-rich manganese-based cathode materials offer promising research avenues owing to their high capacity. This study delved into the impact of cation doping on Li1.2Ni0.13Co0.13Mn0.54O2(LNCMO). A range of layered Li1.2BXNi0.13Co0.13Mn0.54O2 (LNCMOxB, B = Ca, Na, Al) cathode materials were produced utilizing calcium, sodium, and aluminum chloride as dopants. Combining these elements with the lithium-rich materials improves the capacity retention of the positive electrode and mitigates voltage decay. X-ray diffraction analysis, Rietveld structural refinement, SEM, and XPS verified the inclusion of Ca, Na, and Al in the synthesized samples. Electrochemical analysis revealed that the LNCMO-0.01Na sample, possessing the largest dopant radius, exhibited favorable cyclic stability at 0.2C. Conversely, the LNCMO-0.01Al sample, featuring the smallest doped cation radius, demonstrated superior rate performance. Specifically, after 30 cycles at varying rates, the capacity reached 170 mAh·g−1 at 0.2C. The LNCMO-0.007Ca sample exhibited the highest residual capacity, maintaining 151.4 mAh·g−1 after 100 cycles at 0.2C. Doping Li sites in Li1.2Ni0.13Co0.13Mn0.54O2 materials with appropriately sized divalent cations significantly enhances their overall electrochemical performance. This enhancement is attributed to ion doping within the Li and TM layers, expediting the diffusion kinetics of Li ions, and augmenting ion and electronic conductivity. Investigating the doping modification of lithium-rich manganese-based oxide microspheres is instrumental in advancing positive electrode materials for lithium-ion batteries, aiming for increased specific capacity and more stable material structures.

Durable Sb/Na co-doped lithium-rich cathode material prepared by a novel planetary griding method

Nano-sized cathode materials are recognized for their enhanced active reaction area and uniform chemical composition, leading to distinct electrochemical performance benefits. However, the conventional sol–gel methods used for nanomaterial synthesis are often marred by significant raw material wastage and lengthy preparation processes, limiting their practicality. This study introduces a straightforward planetary grinding approach using low-melting-point precursors for the synthesis of oxide cathodes for lithium batteries. Through this method, an antimony and sodium co-doped lithium-rich layered oxide was produced, showcasing an impressive specific capacity of 238.48 mAh/g at a current density of 0.2 C (50 mA/g). Furthermore, this material exhibited outstanding cycle performance, maintaining 97.5 % capacity retention after 500 cycles at 1 C, with a specific capacity of 190.54 mAh/g in the final cycle.
