Leaky-mode long-period grating on a lithium-niobate-on-insulator waveguide

Lithium niobate on insulator (LNOI) is a promising platform for the construction of high-density integrated photonics circuits. In this paper, we propose compact long-period gratings (LPGs) formed on LNOI rib waveguides for achieving light coupling from the guide mode to the leaky mode. Our LPGs are polymer gratings coated on the surfaces of LNOI waveguides and can be designed to achieve strong mode coupling at specific resonance wavelengths for the TE-like and the TM-like polarization. By means of a numerical analysis, we find that the LPGs exhibit turning points in the phase-matching curves, which promises the realization of broadband wavelength filters and polarizers with such grating structures on the LNOI platform. To experimentally verify the theoretical results and demonstrate the LPG characteristics, we fabricate a number of LPG filters on LNOI rib waveguides, which include two broadband LPGs operating near the turning points: a TE-pass polarizer with a 20 dB extinction ratio over a bandwidth of 270 nm from 1430 to 1700 nm and a TM-pass polarizer with a 20 dB extinction ratio over a bandwidth of 90 nm from 1500 to 1590 nm. The insertion losses for the passing polarization are smaller than 2 dB in the C + L band. Our LPGs can serve as building blocks for the development of a wide range of integrated LNOI devices for application in on-chip signal processing.

Single-photon detection and cryogenic reconfigurability in lithium niobate nanophotonic circuits

Lithium-Niobate-On-Insulator (LNOI) is emerging as a promising platform for integrated quantum photonic technologies because of its high second-order nonlinearity and compact waveguide footprint. Importantly, LNOI allows for creating electro-optically reconfigurable circuits, which can be efficiently operated at cryogenic temperature. Their integration with superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors (SNSPDs) paves the way for realizing scalable photonic devices for active manipulation and detection of quantum states of light. Here we demonstrate integration of these two key components in a low loss (0.2 dB/cm) LNOI waveguide network. As an experimental showcase of our technology, we demonstrate the combined operation of an electrically tunable Mach-Zehnder interferometer and two waveguide-integrated SNSPDs at its outputs. We show static reconfigurability of our system with a bias-drift-free operation over a time of 12 hours, as well as high-speed modulation at a frequency up to 1 GHz. Our results provide blueprints for implementing complex quantum photonic devices on the LNOI platform.

Manipulating guided wave radiation with integrated geometric metasurface

Abstract Metasurfaces have manifested unprecedented capabilities in manipulating light by subwavelength unit cells, facilitating the miniaturization and multifunctions of optical systems. On the other hand, lithium niobate on insulator (LNOI) technology is revolutionizing the integrated photonics, enabling multifunctional devices and applications. Yet the optical interface for coupling and manipulation is not sufficient and versatile. Here, we developed a geometric metasurface interface for LNOI waveguide and demonstrated several on-chip integrated devices for free space light field manipulations. By decorating waveguides with subwavelength optical antennas, we manipulated the guided waves into desired wavefronts in space, achieved complex free-space functions, such as focusing, multichannel vortex beam generation, and holography. Our architecture goes beyond the conventional gratings and enriches the functionalities of metasurface, which would open up a new perspective for future versatile guided-wave driven optical devices.

Er3+‐Doped Lithium Niobate Thin Film: A Material Platform for Ultracompact, Highly Efficient Active Microphotonic Devices

Lithium niobate on insulator (LNOI) has already become a promising material platform for ultracompact, high‐performance, and low‐cost passive microphotonic devices. However, studies on an active LNOI platform are relatively slow. Current work aims at developing an important integrated photonic piece, an active LNOI thin film and waveguide. Herein, it is first demonstrated that a full wafer‐scale (3 in. in diameter) Er3+‐doped LNOI (Er:LNOI) wafer can be fabricated by directly ion‐beam slicing a commercially bulk Er3+‐doped lithium niobate wafer. Then, a number of rib‐type waveguides with a cross‐section <1 μm2 are patterned on its surface using mature nanostructuring technologies. Further optical and spectroscopic characterization results confirm the applicability of the Er:LNOI wafer to the fabrication of an active waveguide. The success in fabrication of Er3+‐doped LNOI thin film and waveguides enables the establishment of an active LNOI platform and opens the possibility of developing ultracompact active microphotonic devices, which may find wide applications in the fields of optical communications, nonlinear optics, microwave photonics, and novel photonic systems such as parity‐time symmetric systems.

Efficient erbium-doped thin-film lithium niobate waveguide amplifiers.

Lithium niobate on insulator (LNOI) is an emerging photonic platform with great promise for use in future optical communications, nonlinear optics, and microwave photonics. An important integrated photonic building block, active waveguide amplifiers, however, are still missing in the LNOI platform. Here, we report an efficient and compact waveguide amplifier based on erbium-doped LNOI waveguides, achieved using a sequence of erbium-doped crystal growth, ion slicing, and lithography-based waveguide fabrication. Using a compact 5 mm long waveguide, we demonstrate an on-chip net gain of >5dB for 1530 nm signal light with a relatively low pump power of 21 mW at 980 nm. The efficient LNOI waveguide amplifiers could become an important fundamental element in future lithium niobate photonic integrated circuits.

On-chip erbium-doped lithium niobate waveguide amplifiers [Invited

Lithium niobate on insulator (LNOI), as an emerging and promising optical integration platform, faces shortages of on-chip active devices including lasers and amplifiers. Here, we report the fabrication on-chip erbium-doped LNOI waveguide amplifiers based on electron beam lithography and inductively coupled plasma reactive ion etching. A net internal gain of ~30 dB/cm in communication band was achieved in the fabricated waveguide amplifiers under the pump of a 974-nm continuous laser. This work develops new active devices on LNOI and will promote the development of LNOI integrated photonics.

High-efficiency edge-coupling based on lithium niobate on an insulator wire waveguide.

Edge-coupling on single-crystal thin-film lithium niobate on insulator (LNOI) was systematically studied in this paper. An inverse taper-shaped spot-size converter (SSC) to convert the mode field from the laser chip to a nanoscale LNOI waveguide was adopted to improve the coupling efficiency. Structure of the edge coupler was fully investigated and optimized by using the eigenmode expansion method. The single-mode conditions of the LNOI waveguide for three common communication bands were taken into consideration. Further, the length and tip width of the inverse taper, the cross-section dimensions of SiON waveguide, and the sidewall angle were investigated with respect to coupling efficiency. As a result, the maximum coupling efficiency from an edge coupler to laser chip can reach 54%, 48%, and 58% at 1550, 1310, and 850 nm in Z-cut LNOI for quasi-TM mode, respectively. This proposed work gives a better understanding of the function of the edge coupler based on LNOI material and provides an appropriate method for the design of an edge coupler with high efficiency, which could benefit the further application of high-density monolithic integrated optical components.

Efficient and highly tunable second-harmonic generation in Z-cut periodically poled lithium niobate nanowaveguides.

Thin-film lithium-niobate-on-insulator (LNOI) has emerged as a superior integrated-photonics platform for linear, nonlinear, and electro-optics. Here we combine quasi-phase-matching, dispersion engineering, and tight mode confinement to realize nonlinear parametric processes with both high efficiency and wide wavelength tunability. On a millimeter-long, Z-cut LNOI waveguide, we demonstrate efficient (1900±500%W-1cm-2) and highly tunable (-1.71nm/K) second-harmonic generation from 1530 to 1583 nm by type-0 quasi-phase-matching. Our technique is applicable to optical harmonic generation, quantum light sources, frequency conversion, and many other photonic information processes across visible to mid-IR spectral bands.

Proposal for an ultra-broadband polarization beam splitter using an anisotropy-engineered Mach-Zehnder interferometer on the x-cut lithium-niobate-on-insulator.

We propose and theoretically demonstrate an integrated polarization beam splitter on the x-cut lithium-niobate-on-insulator (LNOI) platform. The device is based on a Mach-Zehnder interferometer with an anisotropy-engineered multi-section phase shifter. The phase shift can be simultaneously controlled for the TE and TM polarizations by engineering the length and direction of the anisotropic LNOI waveguide. For TE polarization, the phase shift is -π/2, while for TM polarization, the phase shift is π/2. Thus, the incident TE and TM modes can be coupled into different output ports. The simulation results show an ultra-high polarization extinction ratio of ∼47.7 dB, a low excess loss of ∼0.9 dB and an ultra-broad working bandwidth of ∼200 nm. To the best of our knowledge, the proposed structure is the first integrated polarization beam splitter on the x-cut LNOI platform.

Wideband and compact TM-pass polarizer based on hybrid plasmonic grating in LNOI.

Based on the transverse electric (TE)/transverse magnetic (TM) polarization diversity in plasmonic Bragg gratings, a compact TM-pass/TE-stop polarizer is theoretically proposed on thin-film lithium niobate on insulator (LNOI) platforms. By introducing a large misalignment between metal gratings on both sides of the LNOI waveguide, we demonstrate a polarizer with a high extinction ratio of 20 dB, a low insertion loss of 2.5 dB, a wide waveband from 1.48 to 1.62 μm, and a compact size of only 23 μm on simulation.

Parametric analysis and comparative study of multimode waveguides on lithium niobate-on-insulator and silicon-on-insulator platforms

Multimode waveguides on lithium niobate-on-insulator (LNOI) and silicon-on-insulator (SOI) platforms are numerically investigated in buried, rib, and strip configurations. Performance of waveguides is compared in terms of waveguide cross-sectional area, dispersion, mode hybridization, and power confinement for both quasi-transverse electric and quasi-transverse magnetic modes. Tall waveguides with single mode in the horizontal direction, supporting higher order modes in the vertical direction, are analyzed. Also, wide waveguides with single mode in the vertical direction, supporting higher order modes in the horizontal direction, are studied. Designs that overcome mode hybridization are proposed, which are well suited for applications such as optical interconnects. LNOI waveguides were found to exhibit lower dispersion in all the configurations, with power confinement and physical dimensions comparable to those of SOI waveguides. The results are instrumental in design optimization of multimode components for on-chip mode-division multiplexing schemes and multiparameter sensing applications. Electro-optic effect is also illustrated in a buried multimode LNOI waveguide that is largely useful in modulation and switching applications.

Improved second harmonic performance in periodically poled LNOI waveguides through engineering of lateral leakage.

In this contribution, we investigate the impact of lateral leakage for linear and nonlinear optical waveguides in lithium niobate on an insulator (LNOI). Silicon nitride (SiN) loaded and direct patterned lithium niobate cross-sections are investigated. We show that lateral leakage can take place for the TE mode in LNOI ridge waveguides (X-cut lithium niobate), due to the birefringence of the material. This work gives guidelines for designing waveguides in LNOI that do not suffer from the lateral leakage effect. By applying these design considerations, we avoided the lateral leakage effect at the second harmonic wavelength of a nonlinear optical waveguide in LNOI and demonstrate a peak second harmonic generation conversion efficiency of ~1160% W-1cm-2.

Thin-film lithium niobate-on-insulator waveguides fabricated on silicon wafer by room-temperature bonding method with silicon nanoadhesive layer.

Lithium niobate-on-insulator (LNOI) waveguides fabricated on a silicon wafer using a room-temperature bonding method have potential application as Si-based high-density photonic integrated circuits. A surface-activated bonding method using a Si nanoadhesive layer was found to produce a strong bond between LN and SiO2/Si at room temperature, which is sufficient to withstand both the wafer-thinning (LN thickness <5 μm) and surface micromachining processes used to form the strongly confined waveguides. In addition, the bond quality and optical propagation characteristics of the resulting LNOI waveguides were investigated, and the applicability of this bonding method to low-loss LNOI waveguide fabrication is discussed. The propagation loss for the ridged waveguide was approximately 2 dB/cm at a wavelength of 1550 nm, which was sufficiently low for the device application. The results of the present study will be of significant use in the development of fabrication techniques for waveguides with any bonded materials using this room-temperature bonding method, and not only LN core/SiO2 cladding waveguides.
